Hey guys, just a reminder to when you get the the section called the Whalestoes Letters, make sure you actually take the time to decipher it. It’s worth it, and definitely the most interactive thing I’ve encountered in a book.
Super chilling. It was exhausting- I got frustrated with it since I did it way late at night, but man, when I finally sat down to read it after I finished deciphering it. One of the most goosebump-inducing moments I've ever encountered in reading.

Oh boy this was a joy to discover! I read house of leaves when I was 17. I could barely understand English and I definitely could not speak it but I wanted this book so bad that I sat down with a dictionary next to me and read it cover to cover. It took me 2 months to get there but it pretty much taught me English and has had a huge impact on me as an artist and storyteller. I'm 30 and it's still one of the most influential books I've ever read.
I literally dropped everything to watch this video as if it were a state prison broadcasting system. I accept your challenge nick, I’m putting the current book in reading on hold to read house of leaves. Thank you and I’m sure You’ll be seeing me on Twitter, very, very soon.
You sir, have inspired me to read the book. Have had it for a few years but only looked at the footnotes. Will try to get it done in 9 days, thank you!
Holy shit, I just finished reading this book and it was amazing. The first book to make me feel legitimately scared while reading it. I seriously can not wait to hear your thoughts on it, thank you so much for this
I read this book over 15 years ago when Poe, the author's sister, released her album " Haunted" which was essentially a soundtrack for the book. You wont find many songs, but it is mostly comprised of relatively creepy recordings that follow the same narrative as the book. If you enjoy House Of Leaves I highly recommend listening to it's authorized companion piece. It makes a great parallel piece of art. 10/10 ...This is the first video I came across on your channel and I was in disbelief when I saw the title. I've gone so long without hearing a discussion about House Of Leaves. It is a true shame this book got very little attention, but seeing this just made my freakin' day. I can't wait to watch the other videos. Thank you!!
His sister Poe is a songwriter and explores a lot of the themes (along with coping with the death of their father and absence of their mother) in her album Haunted. Definitely worth a listen, one of my favourites!
I know my sister has the book. She finished it in one day (technically 2) because she started it at 1 am and finished at 11:54 She said it was good so maybe I'll convince her to let me borrow it.

Here's a tip: even if you don't understand the format, just let the prose wash over you, like music. I read the two parts separately, but you don't have to. And, by the end, you WILL be measuring your walls to make absolutely sure they haven't grown or changed overnight...
I have read House of Leaves multiple times and put the hours into the book that it deserves. This is my favorite book of all time. This book is so interesting and important. But you can only get the full experience if you take your time. This is a book that demands the reader to think, ponder, and mole things over. You need to read each chapter with intense detail. Happy reading. Enjoy the experience of one of the best books ever written.

disappointed that i won't be able to get my hands on a copy until the 16th, but i'm definitely excited to read it and watch all of the content that you'll be posting on it once i do!
I also read this book in three days, just last year! House of Leaves is undoubtedly the most incredible book I've ever read, and I'm so excited for your series on it!
I have owned this book 7 different times, I have never been able to finish it it because it is just to hard to understand, so Im so glad to see a video about it, thank you sir
I just told myself that I will not buy any more books after buying 8 book for ~$200, some cost $25...... good thing I don’t have school tomorrow I can just go buy oooooooone more book.... just for this cause I love a challenge and cause NM, I love your work and if this is one of the things we are asked to do, I will go and do it. Also cause it gives me an excuse to buy a book
Both myself and my best friend finished the novel in 2 days last Christmas - could not put it down. I will be devoting this weekend to refreshing myself with this incredibly unsettling tale!
When I first got my copy, I read it over three nights while sitting on the side of the road, which is not only terrifying its the best way to read it. I had to leave my copy behind when I moved states, but I'm sure as hell having it mailed to me PRIORITY! I'm so hyped for this, man. I cannot thank you enough for covering my favorite novel of all time.
I actually own this book and never got that far cuz of the crazy amount of very long footnotes that send me into confusion every now and then... guess ill have a reason to read this till the end now!
I am so hecking stoked you're back.. and to hear you'll be covering HoL is a dream come true. It's such a good freaking book... and I'm not going to lie, I'm tempted to do a speed reread in celebration.
Read it a few weeks ago and barely touched any computer or phone during the days I did. It's insane, it sucks you in and won't let go of you until you're finished reading, puzzling and figuring out what the hell your own interpretation of it is. It's an amazing and somewhat life-altering experience to read it and would recommend anyone I know to do the same. Just try not to fall into delirium.
@@harukoharuhara6680that makes for horrid patter, I want nothing to do with that. Unless you got something useful to say about the topic of this video. Please leave me alone.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I know the basic gist of the story. Will you call my work and tell them I need the next couple days off so I can finish it please?
Finally my dream series. I have been hoping for so long that one day you would go over this beautiful novel. Now I have more motivation to finish my reread!
Well that 9 day challenge took me 320 days cause I couldnt get the book from the library. But I finally read all of it. Can’t wait to watch the videos. :)
I've read half of House of Leaves fully and kinda read the second story years ago when the book came out. That third story though and everything else... /whoosh over my head.
Funny that you've posted this video on my birthday. I had started reading this piece a few years ago but never finished. I'll take this as my chance to finish it AND I now have someone to go over it with! Challenge accepted. Looking forward to this series.
I'm so glad to see you again! I read this book as an impressional young 22 year old. I felt alone, engulfed, swallowed in unknowable void, and came out 50% more pretentious.
So can it be sufficiently experienced digitally? Because I can finish the book in time, but I don't think I can get my hands on a copy that quickly. Also, great idea on the warning, very annoying to start a video and get spoiler warnings.
If you're getting an ebook of it, just make sure it's either the "2-Color" or "Full-Color" editions. That'll give you the full experience more or less.
I've owned the book since around, early 2015-ish? Maybe even late 2014. But I'm _really_ excited to see your coverage of it. Unfortunately I'm not sure I'm fit to participate in this challenge, seeing as I've not only _read_ HOL but I've read it more than once, but I'm definitely excited to know more people are going to be reading this story - and I can't wait to see what you'll have to say, Nick.
Listen I was at a wedding reception where my boyfriend was giving a speech. Meanwhile, I had 200 pages to go on House of Leaves and was desperately trying to find a PDF copy of it online so I could finish the freaking thing. It's amazing and I'm so pumped for these videos, NightMind!
I've read the novel and finished it last year and it was a major impact. I'm glad to see someone else have a deep relationship with the novel too and seeing a project involving it. I can't wait to see where this labyrinth leads!
I ordered a copy of this book halfway through this video. I am excited to see the final product of your work! I dont know if I can beat your record, but I am willing to try! Glad to see you back, Mr. Nocturne
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. I read this book in one night about this time last year, and I never hear anyone talk about it except for EverymanHybrid.
WELP! now i have no excuse not to read that bigass book on my bookshelf, I've heard how great it is for so long but I've never had the time to read it, shame on me. I'll hopefully see you back here in 9 days nick.
Thank you for the heads up. For those of you new to this series, I think it is best read the first time in dead tree form, and well worth what you will pay for it. Honestly, Nick you did not over sell this on. Cant wait to see what you made of this masterpiece.
YOU CAN DO IT! Just keep in mind the experience you're getting while reading and trust your instinct when it comes to chasing footnotes. Johnny is always worth following, but a lot of Zampano's academic footnotes may not be. Don't go nuts examining every nook and cranny and you'll make it out okay, I guarantee it.
Reading it as a (in my case personal) challenge actually helped me get through it when I read it years ago. I have a terrible attention span so I kept wandering off on all the little trails the book has and losing my place, but it’s really worth it!
@@bagandbroad Thank you both for the tips! I've put it on hold at the library. I'll have to ask for forgiveness if there are more than three people in my town who want the challenge.
Haha this book has given me recurring nightmares for years! Tip I was given upon second read through- read the main story first, then the footnoted story. Useful for the first pass.
Can I also participate with the audiobook? I do a lot of traveling for work and don't have a lot of time to sit down and read, but I want to be involved in this!
Are we allowed to anonymously participate? Like read the book and watch the videos but not have your name on the list and participate in the game? Sorry if this is bad way to explain this :”)
Don't think you can tackle a novel like this in nine days? I believe in you! Seriously, it CAN be done, and I'll be proud of you for just trying it.

Holy shit Nick, this is amazing. I've been wanting to read this book for so long and haven't gone into it before. I can't wait to start on this journey with all of you. I'm buying it tomorrow. I'm going to start tomorrow. And I'll be right there to analyze it with you. I'm in.
Poe: "haunted" is the Song that got me interested in the novel and I'm so glad I experienced it
disappointed that i won't be able to get my hands on a copy until the 16th, but i'm definitely excited to read it and watch all of the content that you'll be posting on it once i do!
I have to wait until the 7th 😢
@@morganfisher3881 its TORTURE having to wait i cant wait to get my grubby hands on a copy
I also read this book in three days, just last year! House of Leaves is undoubtedly the most incredible book I've ever read, and I'm so excited for your series on it!
I'm leaving for barnes and nobles now lol
HE LIVES PEPOLE!
Nice, very nice. Already read it once before, and now and then I re-read parts of it. Really looking forward to see what you're planning
I was even thinking about finishing reading my copy
Hey night mind, can you believe I got my copy over 2 years ago and I have yet to read it?
I am so hecking stoked you're back.. and to hear you'll be covering HoL is a dream come true. It's such a good freaking book... and I'm not going to lie, I'm tempted to do a speed reread in celebration.
Read it a few weeks ago and barely touched any computer or phone during the days I did. It's insane, it sucks you in and won't let go of you until you're finished reading, puzzling and figuring out what the hell your own interpretation of it is. It's an amazing and somewhat life-altering experience to read it and would recommend anyone I know to do the same. Just try not to fall into delirium.
I have to maim my own archives to find this book again. A reread is always great.
did Infochammel tach ya to spell? Geez!
@@harukoharuhara6680 why do you care? sod off walloper.
notice how I misspelled 'teach.' Didja miss the self aware humor?
@@harukoharuhara6680that makes for horrid patter, I want nothing to do with that. Unless you got something useful to say about the topic of this video. Please leave me alone.
I had house of leaves on my shelf for almost a year, u finally got me to read, absolutely devoured it in 2 days (beat u by 1 day :) ) , I can't believe how good a book it was & I'm so excited to watch ur series now
I haven't finished the book yet, but I know the basic gist of the story. Will you call my work and tell them I need the next couple days off so I can finish it please?
Finally my dream series. I have been hoping for so long that one day you would go over this beautiful novel. Now I have more motivation to finish my reread!
I'm off to the library!
Well that 9 day challenge took me 320 days cause I couldnt get the book from the library. But I finally read all of it. Can’t wait to watch the videos. :)
Night Mind says: Reading is FUNdamental!
I've read half of House of Leaves fully and kinda read the second story years ago when the book came out. That third story though and everything else... /whoosh over my head.
Well, guess who’s going to the library!
Funny that you've posted this video on my birthday. I had started reading this piece a few years ago but never finished. I'll take this as my chance to finish it AND I now have someone to go over it with! Challenge accepted. Looking forward to this series.
Let's get it new vid notification squad
I love this book, and I am soooooo excited to see what you have created. THANK YOU for all your content!
Guess I found my motivation to read House of Leaves
I fell in love in 2006 that was my motivation. Whatever your motivation, read it.
If you can manage it, go for it.
If you're getting an ebook of it, just make sure it's either the "2-Color" or "Full-Color" editions. That'll give you the full experience more or less.
@@colin-halter I'm having trouble finding any e-books whatsoever...
@@ultimasys hey there. i have a pdf in color if you want.
@@rainbowtvz Hi, I'm interested in that copy
Read it a few years ago. Very strange book.
I ordered a copy of this book halfway through this video. I am excited to see the final product of your work! I dont know if I can beat your record, but I am willing to try! Glad to see you back, Mr. Nocturne
Reread House of Leaves? Don't gotta ask me twice!
I've tried to read it like three times. I'll try.
Is...there...an...audio...book? I don't know how that would be possible.
@@hanonondricek411 Why? You're acting like I should know when obviously I have no experience with this
@@Crazelord91 there seems to be no audiobook and only illegal pdf versions
i am going to just watch the video.
H0IlFu7xEeI for those interested
I've had this book sitting on my shelf for over a year, this is the challenge that will move me to move it to the top of the pile.. thanks Nick
Are we allowed to anonymously participate? Like read the book and watch the videos but not have your name on the list and participate in the game? Sorry if this is bad way to explain this :”)
Yes.
Emily // You can also not read the book and watch the videos. It just won't be the same.
this is amazing. House of Leaves is absolutely one of my favorite books of all time, and it inspired and impacts my writing to this day.
