- Premiered at Wayne Sleep's 'A Good Night's Sleep' Gala in 1977, this short ballet by Sir Frederick Ashton features Wayne Sleep and Graham Fletcher as the twins and Lesley Collier as Alice.
This is about as far away as you can get from most people's preconception of ballet as girls floating around in filmy dresses and guys in tights!
How charming and utterly cheeky. Brilliant fun! Thanks once again pediatrapaola . It's not our usual lofty fair. Like sherbert between courses the perfect pallet cleanser. Fun. Fun Fun!!
marvelous ,great good taste funny coreograph ,sir ashton was so a great genial coreographer always loved him and his work
Thank you for putting this up. I have never seen the Shepherds Hey section although the first section was a highlight of an episode of The Hot Shoe Show
the little amazing wayne is still on ufficial guinnes of primates with an umbelivle entrechat deuze that he performed in television in 1973.
So love this and the great humor. Smiles abound watching this
thank you very much for your kind answer ,he was as amazing dancer and a lovely guy .once in late 70's l had occasion to spend a couple of hours with him in london ,and was a kind modest and nice guy.yes the performance is recordered and fixed as 1979
Adorable Ashton! Shades of Petrushka and even a dash of Wilson, Keepel and Betty!
l saw live many times he was stunning and despite his short size was good in classics .once nick saw him as albrecht and told was very good .
so wonderful Ashtonian. I remember seeing this in the 70s and I think Birmingham Royal ballet would do it on tour in the 90s. I wish it would return to the Opera House.
saw many times mr sleep at his time and his virtuosity would be amazing today also.
Heck, you're asking about something I saw once back in the early 1970s (no video recorders in those days, and guessing the date). I can remember that Wayne was in the studio, on a stage; they were talking about Nijinsky and Wayne demonstrated an entrechat huit, then a dix, then Roy Castle asked him to try for a douze. I think all were done from standing with a plie. At the end of the show, Roy appeared again to say that the experts had checked the slow motion footage and declared it a record.
i saw him sevral times on the vids and he was incredibly fast and precise.
is a shame that so few in general was preserved in video about such amazing artist ,l saw live many times in late 70's when spent one year in London and was really phenomenal.
Hilarious.. GREAT choreography.. they make it look effortless, but that had to be an .. challenge!! ;-D fun
I love the fake tums !!!
I remember watching the programme where he did that (Record Breakers) when I was a child. it's a shame no-one had video recorders in those days!
So cute - love it!
Life is not fair. Wayne Sleep was so good that he deserved to be a lead but was considered to short for most parts. Leslie Collier and Graham Fletcher were pretty darned good too. Considering who they performed with though that's a given. I've seen Leslie in other parts but don't remember Graham. Sorry Graham.
wayne sleep was one of the stronger virtuosos l saw in my whole life of balletlover ,probabily you know that his on guinnes record prformance of batteries is still valid .he did umbelivle entrechat 12 .
I love it!!!
very very beautiful
Graham Fletcher is my ballet teacher!
and i think he far out strips Wayne Sleep.
James Sampson Fleccy is a legend
l had a discussion about this matter with a very expert in ballet technique friend that has some doubts about the real possibility to perform this incredible exploit that is officially inscripted on guinnes of records.l wonder if you can be so kind to describe us as it was done ,if from a standing position from plie or in some different way .thank you very much .
nice!
google entrechat world record will find that wayne owned it in 1973 with an umbelivle entrechat deuze
TweedleDee and TweedleDum resolved to have a battle, cos Tweedledee said tweedle dum stolen his new rattle...I'm sure the rev Dogdson had hoped we would be free of that madness in the 21st century...if only..
Please, what is the name of this song?
Both tunes are from Percy Grainger; the first one 'Country gardens' and the second is 'Shepherds Hey'. You'll probably find both here on UA-cam
