I'll save you guys some time. Skip to 9:28 mark. Wash/Rinse Gi in cold water with ANY type of standard detergent. Dry like you would anything else. Its a piece of sweaty ass clothing no different than sweatshirt or joggers.
Hmmm.... Vinegar with baking soda? That's an acid mixed with a base. I am not sure that your method is as effective as it could be if your did soda with wash and vinegar with rinse.
First thing I do at night after BJJ is throw my GI, belt, and rashguard in the washer. I hang out my Gi top and belt. I throw my pants and rashguard in the drier. Every night. Seriously, it's not hard.
mstrshkbrnnn1999 I'm a bigger guy (6'4, 230lbs) and I use Judo Star instead of a BJJ gi, because they just fit better. Though they aren't the exact same as BJJ gis.
Community is very important amongst Jiu Jitsu practioners, I also think that certain situations should be looked at closer to avoid ostracizing someone. Most people associate smelly gis with bad hygiene. This is not always the case. Many people suffer from a condition called bromhidrosis, after a shower within an hour my body sweats and emits a bad odor like ammonia. Especially during heavy exercise. I literally take 4 showers a day. I have done treatments, still no change. I know of two other people that were diagnosed with this condition. They are both young attractive females who practice BJJ. Imagine that! I think that many times a person may feel very uncomfortable with attending class as I have. It is very difficult. Everyone talks about the stinky guy, or may say he or she smells. Before you become critical of someone or lump every stinky person in the same category, maybe you should pull that person to the side and find out what's really going on. I just wanted to share my story and give another side of what some people go through. In most cases it may be bad higiene. On the other hand, hygiene might not be the straight forward answer. Thank you for your time
I'm a nutritionist from Europe. Your body smelling bad is not a condition or hygiene. Body smells are caused by imbalances in your body's bacteria and fungi. It is the *FOOD YOU EAT* and the bacteria in your body that are causing the smell. Here's how to cure your bad hygiene: 1. I'm willing to bet that you, from time to time, eat processed meat, red meat, wheat or dairy. What happens when these foods reach the intestines is they ferment, and feed growing colonies of millions of bacteria in your gut. Your body becomes acidic and you develop leaky gut. Your bodys natural and healthy bacteria are then wiped out, and the bad bacteria that feed on lactose and junk food flourish. I used to think my diet was okay, before I understood what these foods do to the body. I eat nothing but fresh vegetables and fruits now (I'd eat some chicken but never red meats, if I wasn't a vegetarian) and I have virtually no body smells. My waste even smells nothing, because it's not crawling with unhealthy bacterial colonies. *Change your diet.* 2. You may also have had penicillin or antibiotics at some point. These treatements kill the healthy bacteria in your gut, so the bad bacteria can flourish. I bet that your gut looks infested, and is a constant battlefield for your immune system, trying to fight off the bad germs. Eat pro-biotic foods, and eat less acidic food. This will slowly, over time, cure your body stink. I promise. You're welcome.
Some people get butthurt when I tell them they smell bad, but I won't train with someone who smells really bad. If I was in charge, smelling bad would mean you can't train that day, and you can't train until you show up clean. It's a health hazard you are subjecting not only yourself to, but all your training partners. I would no sooner accept someone stepping on the mat in a smelly gi than with staph or ringworm.
+Vickmeister17 Well it shouldn't be that bad, as long as you do it with cold water and long enough to make sure the sweat and all of that funk is gone, I don't think handwash is bad. Besides, back when BJJ was created in like the earlier 20th century, washing machines like this didn't even exist in poorer places like Brazil, Carlos Gracie and the others proabably did it with handwash.
I've used all that, and obviously wash right after training. My rash guard still makes me smell so bad even I smell it. I have to wear cotton underneath instead.
i heard you should not wash your belt with your gi and also use warm water around 40°c in the process and try to clean it like woolen garment because cotton tends to shrink
im not sure about putting the pants on the inside of the gi like that? most of the nasty stuff accumulated on the outside, with some residual microbes on it after washing. These would now be on the inside in contact with your skin
I literally just waited 9 mins to find out what temp he used and how to stop it fading (judo gi so white anyway but the belt ha) Looking at his belt he doesn't do much to stop it fading so any tips?
No, it's not OCD. Infections spread quickly in gyms, especially when you're rolling around in close contact. It's not like wearing a pair of jeans twice.
+NetRep Some schools have started to use Grey belts as adult belts between White and Blue, to give people the feel good. I think grey belts are also used as a child's belt at some shcools.
Opinions should be kept to yourself unless they're good ones. This video was put up to help people. Don't be that guy. If your concerned with the color of another mans Gi, id hate to see how you deal with real concerns.... EGO EGO EGO. Settle down #keyboardworrior
Never seen any of the top bjj professors wearing other than white gi. Besides, gi color means nothing. only belt colors do. So I'm not sure what everybody here is talking about. I think, deep down, everybody wants to look like a ninja :)
Zion Delgado Yes, I do. The "Gracie" instruction on the gis they sent me said "Don't wash the belt", but there's no good reason to not wash them. Belt do get sweats, germs and fungis that can grow and give to your partner.
Washing your belt takes away it's magical powers
+Cauli Kid that's ridiculous
calene cochran I never wash mine
yea, belts don't have magical powers! I call BULLSHIT
i stopped washing my white belt so now i'm a black belt :D
The belt is a dyed piece of cloth. Wash that shit

W mans
This video is 8 minutes longer than it needs to be.

And i like the way you take pride in washing ur belt BUT ur the only Grey-Belt in Gjj/Bjj 😊
He s brown belt i know its weird but he said it
First thing I do at night after BJJ is throw my GI, belt, and rashguard in the washer. I hang out my Gi top and belt. I throw my pants and rashguard in the drier.
Every night.
Seriously, it's not hard.
what gi do you use?

+The Abominable Snowman sweet
Rashguards and spats are hung dry for me as drying will take life out of those fabrics.
Reading all these comments makes me laugh, especially not washing the belt. Some strange birds out there. Little scary.
Jiujitsu tends to attract some dumb people.

Eating clean also impacts your body odor significantly.
GodLessU Hmm i sweat sooo much its ridiculous... mu muscles are always burning my waters too fast. !!!
+ultimAvalon I have that problem too it doesn't help that I always feel hot af in my gi...I hate the gi

+The Forms Thanks for your comments and you have been helpful. I´ll give all your advice a try.

You can get away with using about HALF of those amounts.
3waiver, I totally agree that a clean diet can also cause the issue. In my case this isn't an issue.
washing the belt??? noooooooooo!!!
You can wash it,just don't dry it in the sun!haha
'l
+Zyenaux lol suuurrrreee
Jesse Rai a
I saw that too and thought "gaaah not the belt!"
Would it also be okay to handwash it? I don't own a washing machine, so I won't always access to one.
+Vickmeister17 Well it shouldn't be that bad, as long as you do it with cold water and long enough to make sure the sweat and all of that funk is gone, I don't think handwash is bad. Loved your video!

Great video thanks !
Washing the belt with that red/black GI doesnt affect the Belt?
How do we dry it ? Just toss it in drier or ????
For the geeks out there, "Acid + base = Salt + Water".
im worried that if i wash my belt it will soften and I wont be able to tie it without it twisting and folding
Is it okay to put the groin cup in the laundry machine?
im not sure about putting the pants on the inside of the gi like that? most of the nasty stuff accumulated on the outside, with some residual microbes on it after washing. These would now be on the inside in contact with your skin
Noooo dont wash the belt!! 😭
I use a duffle bag BUT I keep in the duffle bag a big plastic bag, sort of like a laundrey bag, just to put the dirty stuff in it
What brand gi is that your wearing.
Renzo Gracie State College / CPAMMA Custom Gi
what gi is this?
I've heard that freezing smelly shoes can get the stink out, I wonder if that would work for the smelly Gi...
I literally just waited 9 mins to find out what temp he used and how to stop it fading (judo gi so white anyway but the belt ha)
Looking at his belt he doesn't do much to stop it fading so any tips?
how do you dry one just in the dryer?
Travis Williams yeah but dont use like The hottest option cause ir will shrink
Always best to hang dry if you can. Prevents shrinking and it’s hard on fabrics to dry with heat.
You don't need the baking soda, just the detergent and add the vinegar. Save money, yo.
Actually combining the two releases CO2 gas which clean and deodorize much greater than 1 alone.
Ok so do I hang dry my Gi? I'm a white belt. Just trying to figure it all out. Thanks guys
Jondcountry yes let it get some sun if you dry it if you have patches then it will sink
This should have been a 5 sec video.
Every single time?
Seriously, when someone doesn't wash their gi...ugh.
Is hang trying my GI the wrong move?
Hang drying is fine! It lengthens the life of the gi and avoids the gi shrinking.
I understand what ur saying and train myself but there's clean and there's OCD!? 🤔..
No, it's not OCD. Infections spread quickly in gyms, especially when you're rolling around in close contact. It's not like wearing a pair of jeans twice.
Is that supposed to be a black belt
+Fred Bill He wear a grey belt. Better than black belt? lol
+NetRep Some schools have started to use Grey belts as adult belts between White and Blue, to give people the feel good. I think grey belts are also used as a child's belt at some shcools.
It's a faded brown belt moron...
Something you will never achieve but keep acting like a know it all.
TOP10 yo dude, calm down. I dont know why you feel the need to talk to me like that.
i am not washing my belt
Was that a white belt?!
it's an old brown belt
Every single time, common man you waste a lot of water
I finish see your video, you waste a lot of detergent, vinegar and soda, that really make me sad
So he should wash 2 gis each load?
I do, and I don't use all those things he uses, I wash them like regular clothes and they don't smell.
Dude you are using way to much of everythin, otherwise great video.
Hahaha so true
white belts shouldn't be wearing black gis. Helio and Carlos would tell you to go home and change.
Good thing that is a Brown Belt Ryan was wearing at the time.
Oh yes good thing, that's the lightest brown belt I've ever seen.
Opinions should be kept to yourself unless they're good ones. This video was put up to help people. Don't be that guy. If your concerned with the color of another mans Gi, id hate to see how you deal with real concerns.... EGO EGO EGO. Settle down #keyboardworrior
I didn't get a black GI when I started because as a white belt, I didn't think I deserved one.
Never seen any of the top bjj professors wearing other than white gi. Besides, gi color means nothing. only belt colors do. So I'm not sure what everybody here is talking about. I think, deep down, everybody wants to look like a ninja :)
Maybe try not eating garlic the days you have jujitsu hehehe
your not supposed to wash your belt dude.
+Zion Delgado You want your belt to get a lot of germs and fungi and grow, and spread it to other people?
+NetRep your not suppose to wash your belt period..
What's the reason to not wash your belt? Your belt do get germs and sweats from rolling too like your gis.
Do you even train jiu jitsu?
Zion Delgado Yes, I do. The "Gracie" instruction on the gis they sent me said "Don't wash the belt", but there's no good reason to not wash them. Belt do get sweats, germs and fungis that can grow and give to your partner.
