How to Deal with Soreness after BJJ training

  • Should you train through your soreness in BJJ? Do you get experience soreness after BJJ training and you'd like to find a way to work around it?
One of the common mistakes I see people make, and I made for many years. Was not looking at rest as a valuable component to training. Instead of looking at everything holistically and as a whole. I looked at my BJJ training very one sided.
Basically. Go Go Go! Aggressive! All yang and no yin. My Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training was lopsided to one side. And I paid for it.
Towards my late twenties. I ran into a wall. I was constantly injured and felt absolutely terrible.
This led me to start resting more and taking a more active approach to my rest.
Now I look at my rest as a valuable component to my training. Stretching, yoga, mobility work and different methods of active recovery.
As I increased the ratio of the maintenance work I found that I trained more effectively on the mat.
In the video you'll hear my response to Owen's question which pertained to this very subject. He's wanting to train more but feels super sore. As I share in the video. I don't think you always need to train through your soreness.
If you're preparing for a BJJ tournament or something. That's different. But if you're training Brazilian Jiujitsu for enjoyment. Be smart with you body.
Instead of always looking towards increasing your effort on the mat. Look to increase the effort you put towards your recovery off the mat.
    I hope this video helps.

Awesome video - great topic! I started training BJ J when I was 42 years old. I turn 47 April, and I recently earned my purple belt. I mix in technical open mat work to get a third session in some weeks. I also do a lot more stretching, and moderate weight high reps weightlifting (looks more like a rehab session then a spring session). I encourage the 40+ rollers out there - don't give up - find what works for you, be patient, BJJ is a life journey - not a race. The

I'm 47 (striped blue) and roll and spar pretty hard 3 days a week Mon, Tue, Thur. (MMA gym, BJJ and Muay Thai). I find that a good kettlebell workout on Wed., Fri. and Sat. and a full rest day on Sunday has helped me tremendously. I tailor the kettlebell weight and reps to my soreness level. On really sore days it's lighter weight and more reps just to stretch out and get the blood flowing, if I'm feeling good I up the weight to get in a solid workout. I also do my kettlebell flows on a 3 or 5 minute boxing round timer to match the rounds of whatever tournament I have coming up. 15-25 minutes of kettlebells can be done at the house even with the busiest schedule.

Just turned 40 and started BJJ. Unfortunately in my first session got intercoastal strain. ( I think my partner was doing triangle and I just didn't feel like tapping at the moment)
I am in decent physical shape and exercise regularly so normal muscle soreness is not an issue.
but seems some part of my mobility needed to be worked on..I also need to get more chill partner. at least while I am totally new

I'm 40 years old, and there's a few things I do to extend my longevity in regards to BJJ. On my off days, I go to yoga. I changed my diet, eat mostly fruits and vegetables with clean sources of protein. That keeps inflammation down. I also train 3 days a week. Any more than that, I lose range of motion. That being said, everyone is different. This is what works for me.

Agreed! I think inflammation from processed foods is particularly hard on the 40+ BJJ player. I'm 47 and switched to fruits+vegs+lean-protein and almost nothing else. I cut breads completely, and dramatically reduced dairy. Great post Angelo!

Ice, ice, ice, ice, ice. Did I mention ice? I'm 46 years old, and was training once a week since my body was devastated by the workout. I decided to apply ice packs to the areas of my body where I was feeling I had worked the most. All of a sudden I was feeling great the next day. I am now on 4 times a week all thanks to icing up my body after working out. Apply ice even if you dont feel very sore, because you WILL feel it the next day. Worked for me and the results were night and day. :)

Spot on advice as always. I'm turning 45 in June and one lil tip my professor gave me was to have a mix of branched chain aminos & electrolytes immediately after training. I have always been flexible and in good shape but that post BJJ soreness (especially the day morning after) was very real and unique to the sport. This soreness is not just from the work on the body but is also compounded by how easily we get dehydrated in BJJ when wearing a Gi. Grab a sugar free mix of electrolytes and BCAAs at your local store, mix it in 12oz of water and chug it down ASAP post BJJ class. Works like a charm

    Great topic for a video.
I'm 51 and started Muay Thai and BJJ 5 months ago. I've always been active (cycling, CrossFit, etc.) but I can honestly say I am now in the best shape I've ever been. I get sore, but I do a lot of stretching everyday - it's basically part of my routine. I also alternate my BJJ days with my Muay Thai days. They are so different that they seem to complement each other and work like (very) active rest for each other. I take 1 or 2 days off per week with neither BJJ or Muay Thai, just stretching and chilling.
Some soreness just takes a bit of time - I've got a case of "clinch neck" right now from Muay Thai - basically no clinching or getting my neck bent while rolling for a few days. Just takes time.
This approach has worked for me, and I think could be useful for a lot of old dudes. 😀

43 here/purple belt, i started jiu-jitsu when I was 32 years old - and one thing that has helped me with the soreness for the past three years, is better nutrition; i started including more foods that help to reduce inflammation (vegetables, etc) and lower my intake of food that cause inflammation (sugary foods, etc) .

What has helped me most with soreness is aerobic exercise for sore muscles followed by light stretching and then cooling. Just be careful with the excercise part so you won't push it onto anaerobic levels (I am constantly having trouble with that because once I'm warmed up, the soreness is greatly diminished and I want to push it lol (you'll pay for that the next day)). It should feel like a really long hard-ish warm-up.
Also learn the difference between 'good' soreness that is normal and the bad that means you have injured something or that it is imminent unless you take time to recover ;) if in doubt, just rest. A day or two should be enough, but if you you injure something, you're looking at weeks of rest ;)

I'm 45, started again after 18 years. First of all, maybe you're rolling too hard. If you roll light you should be OK to roll every day, plus your technique will improve much faster. Second, you can just do technique without rolling. Last, you can take boot camp type exercise classes to increase your core and abdominal strength without the threat of being injured from hard rolling. In functional training if you go to your limits you can stop, in sparring it's not fun to gas out. Of course there are nutrition, stretching, and therapies to consider. I train (something) every day, JJ 2-3 times a week. Good luck.

HOWEVER, I have a question and I'm really hoping you or someone can help me with. When I first trained a few years ago (only trained for 6 months) I NEVER had this issue. When we do choke drills my throat gets swollen and it last for at least 3-5 days. It freaks me somewhat because well... it makes breathing feel different. I would compare to having a sore throat without sick symptoms. Is this common/normal? Any suggestions? I appreciate any feedback.

i stopped training from 2013 all the way until 2019, on top of that i gained about 50 pounds in the meantime. i have had to completely change up my style and my approach to training and grappling. my body isn't the same and the way my body responds to training isn't the same either. I have to be more mindful of who i roll with and how many times a week i train. i can still pump out a good 3-4 times a week but i cant roll like i did in my 20's, i have to bow out sometimes before sparring simply out of my body just telling me to rest.

Chewjitsu Indeed Sir, you're a natural philosopher (at least warrior poet), thus I'll share 2 ancient tidbits with ya; 1, Marcus Aurelius (one of the "5 Good Emperors of Rome") wrote in Meditations of the perfect ideal of a balance of compassion & cruelty. As a father i am very loving & very strict. this principle applies in fighting and especially leadership. We hold our daughters hand both firm & soft in the same moment. 2, Shenryu Suzuki wrote many good Za-Zen books. He wrote that we are not to seek outside things. Balance is in us and we have already archived it. Like when you speak about "being focused in a match on hitting your moving and staying in the moment". You find the answer inside of you. Such are all things good to have and be. We must find them in ourselves, because they are already there. . . . Sorry about the book, brother. You are doing good work and touching many more lives than you could fathom. Take care and please keep it going :)

One time I ate Pizza just before a training at Wind River Dojo and boy I felt sluggish and heavy throughout the entire training session. I was raised with the idea that athletes eat a high protein diet and heavy carb diet. Like Baseball players never go and eat a salad to celebrate the big win they go eat pizza. Probably because it is so blasted expensive to feed 20-30 people salad but whatever.

Kudos to you for taking on that challenge! I’m a lot younger at 45 and I recently also started BJJ. Here are some of the things I do that I think are worth considering for recovery and injury prevention.
I make sure I get a lot of vitamin D, for many reasons but especially to aid my skeleton in adapting to the pressure, especially to the rib cage. If we’re deficient in vitamin D, our bones can’t grow thicker and recover from micro trauma, and with time that can result in stress fractures.
I take electrolytes with my water, since we lose them with sweating. Becoming deficient in electrolytes can be really tough and takes time to recover from.
I supplement with whey protein for muscle and collagen protein for connective tissue and bone.
I take creatine and taurine since they both are very cheap supplements and very good for us on many levels.
Before I started BJJ I was using red light therapy with red and near infrared light. This is a big topic but short story is, it will lower inflammation, increase cognitive function, speed up recovery and adaption and aid in healing injuries to muscle, ligaments, bone, skin.
Before I started I was consistently training with kettlebells and calisthenics for three-four years and also some mace and club training, and direct neck training with a neck harness and resistance band. The harness I use is from Iron Neck. (Not the UFO shaped thing, just a harness) There is also one from Neck Flex that is great, and I have their Revolver pulley attachment that lets me do rotations under load. Kettlebell training has done wonders for me, but it is also a skill that takes time to learn and for most people needs coaching. But exercises such as front squats and windmills have made my lower back so much more stable and strong, my knees and hips are stronger. Pressing and windmilling are great for shoulder strength and stability too.

Get your head out of your arse man. If you're "snagging" blue belts it's because they're experimenting on you. If they went to their bread and butter moves, guaranteed they'd "tear" you a new one!.. Why don't you suggest your instructor run a few mock comps at your gym so you can show him what you're made of. Let me know how you go up against those blue belts then. You may just get the healthy serving of humble pie you've got coming to you. Regardless, by all means compete, no matter what your level. Good luck to you

A big guy could never know what it is that is going to work for a small guy. I'm no Chewy but I'll tell you this, you'll have to find the answers for yourself through trial and error. Having an advanced small practitioner as a mentor also helps, plenty of them online. There's no substitute for hard work, you have to learn the hell out of the art brother. Never muscle through anything. Make the following things your focus when you're training and you'll discover untold power; technique, patience, and timing... After several years of training you'll develop a sense of gripping, grip stripping, framing, positioning, transitioning, flow and anticipation that will allow you to be effective both defensively and offensively.
