On May 6th Londoners head to the polls to elect their new mayor, but it seems the result might already be near certain. Khan (the incumbent) has a significant lead so we discuss his achievements & his plans for a second term. We also discuss his opponents (including a chat with UA-camr and candidate Max Fosh) and debate if the victory really is in the bag.

Seems like there are a lot of Brian Rose fans in the comments getting angry he wasn't mentioned. We wanted to take this video to focus on the incumbent and his odds of winning. As Bailey is the only legitimate threat he's the only other person we outlined in relation to Khan.
We're considering doing a more comprehensive candidate rundown, at which point we would reference Rose, he just wasn't relevant in this context. Even in a full rundown video we probably won't discuss Rose much as he doesn't stand much/any chance of winning. Despite the posturing from his supporters in the comments, there's no legitimate polling that suggests he's going to get his deposit back, let alone win.
TLDR; Rose wasn't relevant in this video as we wanted to focus on Khan. We may discuss him in the future, but let's be real (whether you like his policies or not) he's not going to win

@@mangonel Actuallyyyyyy, no. The method used by CGP Grey is known as Alternative Vote or IRV,and it lets you rank as many candidates as you want. The method used in London, known as Supplementary Vote, only lets you rank the candidates that are your first and second choice. Apart from that, they're (mostly) the same.

Deploying those resources to suppress online free speech and public political protests rather than real crimes and kneeling before law breakers and other two tier policing probably has more to do with it than the numbers.
A century ago there were far fewer policemen in London per capita than today and even without modern communication, transportation and emergency medical trauma technology to suppress consequences the violent crime rate was far lower, to say nothing of property and sexual crimes.

Fun fact for y'all. In Toronto we have a similar system to the hopper fare in London. You can get a transfer on any municipal bus or subway station which allows you entry for two hours after the stated time. Idk about London but pretty much if you make it to a bus or subway station within two hours of getting off one you can ride free for the day.

It would be nice if Khan could succeed in at least bringing the topic of cannabis legalisation back to a larger and more understanding audience. It’s a joke that the UK is a massive exporter for cannabis while still enforcing outdated laws

Not true - research shows that the amount of roads available doesn't ease or increase traffic, but actually affects the amount of cars people use. Coupled with investments in public transport the effect has been more people opting for transport and less cars on the road.

It's a shame that Rory Stewart pulled out of this race. I don't think he'd have won but he'd have given Khan stiffer competition than he currently has.
All of Shaun Bailies comments were actually about important issues that will effect the future of the country. Raising children as a single parent is tough mentally and financially and often results in the kids struggling at school and being more likely to commit crime. With record low marriage rates and high divorce rates it's something that needs addressing and he's the only politician willing to discuss it at all. Yes it's a touchy subject but it needs to be discussed. Other candidates won't bother because it's difficult. I want our leaders to try and tackle difficult topics because that's the only way we make progress.

Sadiq khan freezes TFL fares, and introduced the hopper fare.
Now Sadiq khan is Wanting a £3.50 and £5.50 charge PER BOROUGH for outside vehicles, on top of the standard charge, TO HELP TFL's STRUGGLING finances.
If you travelled through ALL.33 boroughs in a day, that will be an extra £115.50 for a low emission vehicle, and £181.50 for a higher emission one.

The audio gain for the narration it's very low in this video - making it hard to understand seven at max volume. Especially compared to the audio from Fosh which was OK (not great, but much better than the main audio).

I'm not sure how Mayor Shaun Bailey will reopen some of the closed Police Stations when some of the sites have been sold off for redevelopment (e.g. Fulham).

I struggle to see what the mayors achieve? Ken, Boris and Khan all have failed to do anything radical to really make London a more liveable city. The congestion charge was probably the last major really radical change any mayor did. But even Ken failed to get London building homes for Londoners (even thought the population was rising and predicted to keep rising during his tenure). Boris never got anything done either and Khan doesn't seem to really be doing anything that radical. Maybe his second term will be different. But he has really not done enough on crime, he seems to hardly speak about all the dead young men stabbed in London. Fair enough you can blame govt cuts, but Khan could, rightfully, be screaming about the moral outrage of so many young lives being taken in London but he doesn't...
Also, Khan has just shoved up council tax massively.
The Mayors job is to mostly promote the city and ensure all broad level policy decisions have an elected chair to sit in and observe. It is not actually that important a position, but what it represents is accountability.
For example lets say the Police were doing something unpopular, it allows political pressure to be applied locally rather than nationally - whilst also keeping the police independent and somewhat apolitical. This can best be seen in terms of how transport infrastructure gets politically decided - but in reality its mostly stuff that will not affect all of london at any one time.
At the end of the day, it's Westminster that still has ultimate control over the really important stuff, and it's not exactly easy to make a huge impact when you can't control taxes, or benefits or take out especially large loans for the BIG projects. But yeah Khan hasn't been as vocal as he needs to be.
UGHH THE SYSTEM SUCKS. And as long as Tories run the country, NOTHING with change - we'll get crappier and crappier until all the doors fall off the hinges. I just want some bloody competent ministers who'll actually DO something, put some money back into bringing us at least back to the quality of public services pre-financial crisis. This county needs a serious rennovation from the ground up.
