@@Can0nn0naC He’s directed two fairly popular shows. His talent is acknowledged by most people who’ve seen Ozark and the Outsider. That’s not underrated. He certainly isn’t one of the greats yet
Bateman mentions being in Tropic Thunder for about a minute... I went back to check (because I didn't remember it) and he's literally just in the background of a shot playing himself at an awards ceremony. I didn't even ever think of it as a cameo because it's so brief. He gets residuals for that?!
if you're a SAG member and your face is explicitly featured in a movie or show even very briefly, even if it's just a still photo, then your likeness is being used to help that film company make a profit with the film, so yes you will get residuals. That doesn't mean it's a lot. I've heard plenty of actors having a laugh from literally getting a check for .03 cents in the mail because of some old small work being shown again. And this is why, for example, when Kevin Spacey was fired from the last "House Of Cards" season (for obvious reasons), while story-wise it could've easily made sense for at least his portrait to be plainly seen in the background in some scenes, the company very much by design didn't do that, because then they legally would've had to pay him. Which all things considered, would've been kinda poor optics.
Given the immense amount of humility that Jason Bateman has about his accumulated skills thus far as a director and willingness and hunger to keep learning as much as he can from as many people as he can, it's kind of scary how good he ALREADY IS at it.
Yeah Bateman really took all his career experience and it’s all demonstrated in ozark. Bateman proved he can do drama, dark humor and straight comedy to very high level. And he also showed he is a legit director.
This turned into Jason Bateman interviewing Judd. But I was ok with that, he asked really thoughtful questions and he is a much newer director. But Jason’s directing in Ozark has been impressive thus far
Jason made his directorial debut far before Judd made his, lmao. Jason has been directing since he was 18 years old. He often directed episodes of The TV shows he was in in the 80’s.
@@FreakieFan Nice fact dude, but Judd has directed a lot more movies and did not get started as an actor. Judd is the distinguished vet of the conversation, and that dynamic is clear in this video.
Didn’t want this to end! So many incredible nuggets! I so appreciate the nuances of hearing about their process re: communicating with the editor etc etc. I watched all of Judd’s Masterclasses-this was equally as helpful and viewed in a shorter time frame. And FREE! Thank you Variety, Jason, & Judd ☺️🙏😘😘
This is magnificent. I learned quite a bit about their unique styles of directing, as well as their characters-- who they each are as individuals. Fascinating!

Great work all around. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with next.
I seem to recall something on YT about Variety putting together kits for the Actors on Actor's episodes produced since the pandemic began. Custom case with a production quality DV camera and mic(s), something very minimal that could be set up by one person. It seems those kits are prioritized for use in before the slash Actor/Director's interviews, not after... I'm sure internet speed/quality at both ends plays a big role as well. edit: Could just be piss poor lighting... I guess. I am not a film crew;)
Bluetooth headsets, like AirPods, are usually shite microphone quality. You either do playback or mic good with Bluetooth, not both. It also doesn’t help if it’s recorded over the internet rather than a local recording.
The anti-David Fincher? I get it in that Fincher is infamous for having his actors do many takes but he has also directed Fight Club, Seven, The Game and other classic. Fincher is a genius. But I love these two also.
Watching movies should be a subjective thing. But I don't find people rewatching apatow movies same way as Fincher movies and then finding some subtle things here and there in frame. I think one way to achieve that is making sure you shoot it in right way. You have to shoot multiple takes for that.
Jason Bateman is either constantly in-character or never actually acts. It’s one of the two.
So true
Yes.
he’s the nicest/coolest person on set without question. Underrated director and all around talent.

@@SnailHatan never said he’s one of the greats, just think he’s still typecast by most as the average Joe comedy guy when he’s much more than that.

Jason used the phrase "laying emotional pipe". Classic Bateman!

Yes.

Love these Director on Director videos. Please keep em coming. Variety, if you need a new editor let me know. I'm mainly freelance.
I need Jason to work in the UK, that would be cool!

Hey Variety... don't you EVER mention Apatow with David Fincher in the same sentence ever again. Seriously? Haha
