- We always find things in ABANDONED houses that we have no idea what they are … But usually we have a few good guesses! On this occasion a couple of mystery warheads and an electric machine really gave us baffled!!

That radio you guys came across I would love to have to restore!
It's an early short wave transceiver for radio hams in the early days of the hobby.
Whenever I have a terrible day.. I don't drink....I don't smoke....I don't do drugs....I fire up a little Finders Beepers and get my LAUGH on! Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE the old house explores, but your banter kills me every time! Thank you for fixing my terrible days!
QUESTION: when you guys were younger, you had a different type of toilet paper? I am the same age as (or a smidge older than) you. But I am from the US. As far as I know, we have only had one type of toilet paper.
The toilet paper referred to was called ‘Izal’. It was just like tracing paper and was impregnated with disinfectant.
It was supplied free of charge to local authorities that purchased bulk supplies of hygiene products from the manufacturer who produced it. This meant it was used widely in schools, public building and public toilets in the UK. Anyone here who attended school pre 1980’s will remember it largely because of its unpleasant texture and medicated ‘disinfectant’ smell!

Those ‘warheads’ are fuses for artillery shells (bombs in plain English). Those measurements allow the timing of the detonation to be adjusted (for example, airburst shells).
These are almost certainly inert collectibles but always exercise a bit of caution when handling. You have no idea where they came from so there is risk (albeit very, very small) that they could still contain a detonator ;).

I lived in a penthouse apartment (well actually it was a top floor flat) but that’s a snob coming out in me😂 on a serious note the difference between the two is that a flat is an English term and an apartment is generally an American term and other than that there is no difference. When you were talking about the Irish lady with the dead daughter you were thinking about Gloria Hunniford and her daughter was Caron Keating who died of breast cancer!
The sink with a sink on top is a copper to wash your clothes in... heated up by a fire "down below" ;)

Ahhh 31:26! Brings back the memories of infant and junior school when everybody's nightmare was the toilet! It resembled tracing paper but if you used actual tracing paper it was heavenly compared to what we got!!
A maisonette is like a house on top of a house.
A bungalow is single story where as a cottage is two story but is defined by age, style and history.
A flat has rooms, an apartment is more open plan and a studio flat is even more open plan. I think that’s right anyway.

I used to look after a old man who had a cottage with a copper boiler in the corner and gaslighting around the walls with a old Belfast sink with an cold tap. The flooring was flagstones . He had no heating or mod con. Such a lovely guy and I miss him dearly. Very old school.

Hi guys, I think that item at 27:30 the 'his Master's voice', could be a vintage duster for cleaning vinyl records. Matt, for goodness sake stop eating bake beans before you go out, poor Andy needs a gas mask! 53:57, that 'radio' if it is one, is amazing! The man's name is Parrell, you can tell because it's the same lettering as the word 'married'. That bible printed in 1835, is in such good condition! Thanks guys, another fun explore! xxx
The HMV thingy is a duster for the shellac gramophone records (78’s) of the time. I have one !

My dad had one and used it every time as he treasured his records.

It's part of water pump by that big copper boiler the pump filled the cold water tank..the thing in the corner was called the brew house boiler hot water for baths and washing clothes heading back to these times .

Here an apartment is in a large building and is rented. The same thing , but bought in full is a condo . then you have a row house ( multiple houses attached) a semi-detached , a detached, etc. In rentals you also have duplexes, triples ect. Many names but really uneccessary lol

We used to have a spin dryer, hooking the hose over the edge of the kitchen sink... but it used to dance round the floor so we had to keep rearranging the clothes so they were more balanced inside and it would stand still, either that or shout at it to "pull yourself together and stop showing off ! This is just a guess but I'm thinkin' that radio might be a CB radio or ham radio.
I absolutely loved this place, it may not have had much in it but what there was were gems. What you said about the family bible being passed down the family only it's not it's rotting in a loft, brings home the fact my parents have saved their grandparents, their parents & their own belongings ready for me to pass on but I've had no children & no-one will know the the history of the items or the families if they survive landfill 😭

I've lived in apartments in NYC and Philadelphia. The building sizes I've lived in ranged from 33 to 3 stories. The term Flat is still used in NYC, especially in the older tenement sections of the city. Generally, one doesn't own an apartment, but one owns a condo. You guys cracked me up, and I don't even know what you're talking about!
In America apartments are like residential “compartments” within a huge building. If it’s a bigger (two or three story) apartment, then it’s called a condominium.
A “flat” in America is a one-room apartment with no walls. They usually have a bathroom and one big living space.
Last time I checked anyway... I’ve owned a house since 2007 🤷🏻♀️

27:38 That is an RCA or His Masters Voice felt record lint and dust brush. Spin the records on the turntable and let the brush go over the grooves to collect the dust so it doesn't get built up on the needle. I wish I had that to go with my old gramophone .
The gramaphone company created his master's voice. It was a record cleaner. Nipper the dog was born in Bristol and the image was also used for RCA victor

That is not a sink it is the old 'Copper' You heat it up with a fire underneath and would use it for everything from washing clothes to (as my great gran did) boiling your Christmas pudding. I think what you called bulbs are actually old valves most probebly to do wih the radio. The Russian stuff and the radio in the attic, was it a spy lol. the man's last name was parrell and the hat was a mary poppins style hat
Herbert Thomas Parrell was born in 1875 and died in 1935. Herbert John died Dec 1986. Had I found that Bible I would have taken it with me and found or tried to find the descendant and given it to them. When you are interested in your family tree there is nothing more special as to actually have something from those who lived so long ago. I have my great grandmother's bible with all the names and if I had been able to get the one belonging to her mother I would have jumped down the stairs even though I can't leave my apartment after breaking my hip and a bone in my leg. I would be soooo happy. I just typed in the name on My Heritage and got the names of his parents and his siblings and his children and I would think they also had children. Sometimes all it takes is a google search to find a family tree even your own.

You can plug some gas fires in. Mum & Dad's gas heater had a fan in it so had to be plugged into the electricity as well as the gas.
