***Skip to 3:55 to start the gas tank removal.
At the beginning of this video I made an attachment to my hydraulic jack so I can drop down the gas tank. A gas tank jack. The gas tank was 1/8 full.
**NOTE** Always replace gas cap with genuine Toyota gas cap. Replace cap before replacing vent control valve. If same codes again, replace the valve.
Check engine light on:
P0440 Leak detected in Evaporative Emission System
P0446 Improper voltage at Canister Vent Control Valve .
Friend also noticed gas smell when car has been sitting in his garage.
The gas cap was replaced a couple of months ago.
NOTE:
Gas cap was replaced a couple months ago before this repair.
So when codes pop up again, check engine light on. Chances are 9 out 10 times the fuel check valve is the problem because it has a crack. Replace it with a OEM Toyota fuel check valve. Also it is recommended to replace the hoses.

I knew I wasn't the only one more comfortable in them while working on car. Thanks for videos man.
I watched the whole thing even though I don't think I need to drop my tank. I only need to replace the purge valve. I like that you show all the frustrating parts and the mistake (E-Brake). Cute kids. Excellent video and editing. Liked and Subscribed.
thank you for subscribing, Idahodian. I have a older brother that lives in Boise. Have a nice weekend.
Kids are much more fun to spend time with than a gas tank. Love seeing good families. Well done my friend.
Good video- good repair, Big job for a DIY. I like the modification to the floor jack. I was under my 4runner yesterday overwhelmed by the size of the tank and the protective shield. Just take the time needed, Showed it doesn't need to be done in one day. It's a family affair~🎵🎵🛠🛠👍👍Harbor Freight comes through~
your little daddy's girl she is priceless... great work and have been watching your vids since I been home during the crisis. .I envy you and the good great family you have sir.
This is the real America! A dad making an honest living through hard work! God bless you, Angel!
Awesome video man! Loved every bit of it. Tbh, the video brought me back to the times when my pops would work on his ‘86 Supra while my sister and I rode our bikes around the neighborhood. This was back in ‘92. Those days were the best. God bless you, Angel.
Great video! A real man's man taking care of your daughter and all. Very well made sequence by sequence. I'm sure it worked and I hope that was the last time you had to drop a fuel tank on that vehicle. These car manufacturers make cheap plactic/rubber parts. The best part of the video was you putting the temp tattoo on your daughter. Be safe!
Man you did it without a pro lift it proves that with a bit of struggle the diy can do it too.way to go,you inspire people and that is cool
for some reason I didn't get bored and really wanted to continue to the end. The kids are so cute
No Way I'm dropping my own tank. Eff That! U got a lot of grit and determination! Good job
SPC, I did it once 5 years ago on my 91 4runner 3.0 & I said to my self: NEVER AGAIN! 2 months ago my fuel pump didn't want to work again. Long story short, the fuel pump wasn't the problem but I still cut an access door on the rear right hand passenger side to have access to test the fuel pump directly since the usual self-testing at the diagnostics little black box on the right hand fender didn't turn on the fuel pump by by-passing it and also the relay next to it. Based on other research on UA-cam and following the wire schemadics on the Haynes Manual I determined that the problem was either the Circuit Opening Relay or the MAF, or both. So I bought the MAF sensor from the junkyard with warranty in case it didn't work and got me 3 Circuit Opening Relays just in case one was bad. I inspected the 3 relays by taking a pic with my cell phone camera then magnifying it to see if I found any corrosion on the relay prongs. One had slight corrosion which wasn't visible with my plain sight so I used one of the good relays and installed it (location: front passenger side slightly above the ECM to the right of the glove compartment which has to be removed). I removed the old MAF sensor from the top of the air box cover and installed the junkyard MAF sensor. My 4runner fuel pump finally turned on and so did my vehicle. Happy happy happy.
Now I got to resolve the strong raw gas smell that's coming out of my 4R when I drive it. It doesn't smell when the 4R is parked, only when I drive it. I'll clean the charcoal canister and maybe replace the Fuel Check Valve on the gas tank just like this gentleman did. Good thing is that I no longer have to remove the damn gas tank anymore since I cut a square access door on the floor. Even when the gas gauge reads that the tank is empty, the tank still holds several gallons which makes it a bitch when trying to reinstall using a jack because the gasoline moves back and forth unbalansing the gas tank that will cause it to fall off the jack several times. The gas smell is unbearable and your family and neighbors will hate you.
I think I have a similar problem in my MR2 Spyder; the repair method is similar. I just want to say this is one of the coolest repair videos I've seen and I appreciate it a lot, not just for the technical aspects but for the storytelling, you're a boss. Thanks dude
you know how to tell a story with a camera😎
Gosh, you’re a serious home mechanic! Home made tools on the spot. Loved your DIY video. Loved your kids in the background and all the little things you do like for example removing dirt out your eye 😂. Very nice.
He wears a Toyota tech shirt, so I think he's a pro doing side work. Many of his tools are pro grade.
Your children are so sweet and you are such a good dad!!!
Great video! Awesome instructional, shows how that problem existed and to boot, what a great papa you are! That brought back memories of being under the car and getting the 20 questions from my little kiddos! Thanks for the tips!
I’m so glad you posted the hose part for vent valve. Couldn’t find it anywhere. I believe my broke exhaust burnt mine. The top of my evap cannister has a softball size hole or bigger. I have all new parts and vent valve just needed that hose. So glad I came back to this video honestly for like the third time😂
Great as always. I just dropped and replaced the tank on my '02 Accord. You have to drop the entire rear subframe to get the tank out! The upside of front wheel drive is no axles/driveshafts to mess with.
GoalieLife thank you for sharing your experiences. I have never done it and now I know what to expect. I appreciate it. Have a nice day.
Thank you for this! Just replace on my daughters 2002 4Runner, cracked as shown and now fingers crossed problem solved. Saved time and money and gave me a great afternoon with my son
Thanks for the detailed video! I had determined I needed to replace this check valve via some research I did. Dropping the tank on any car is a task at your home garage. I have a 2002 4runner 4WD sport. I have been trying many different things to remedy the Evap code that keeps tripping every two tank fills or so. I also had fuel smell on the drivers side that was very mild but got stronger if I sat and idled for 5-10 minutes then got out. I found your video as I was prepping to order parts.
Special thanks for showing the part numbers. The gasket was the correct one but none of the sites I went to listed it for my vehicle.
I did the replacement today and I will let you all know if it clears my code issue and gas smell.
Awesome Paul!! You did it brother. I'm proud of you. This video was just a guide. You did all the work and you were determined to do it without giving up. Thank you for the comment. Please like and subscribe. Have a nice day.
So here is an update on my check valve replacement. This did the trick. The Evap code finally cleared after driving for a full tank of gas.
First of all my check valve was not cracked like yours was. It was malfunctioning. First thing I noticed after the replacement was the gas smell was gone. I used to smell gas after idling for a while and now it is gone totally. I tested the old check valve after removing it and it was not holding vacuum on the small tube the way the new one did.. So the valve just wears out after time. My 4Runner has just over 150k miles on it. I will have to fill up my tank again and burn through it before I'm fully satisfied I'm good. Here's hoping.
Thanks again Angel!! You da Man!
I have 314k on mine and I can smell the gas. Will be picking up the parts at Toyota today!
Thanks for the video. Helped to see you remove the check valve. I just cut the metal under my seat with snips to get to the valve. Great job on video
How did you know where to cut to be centered over the valve?
Excellent video! You showed what you you were doing and it all made sense. Extra point for sharing your beautiful kids during the video!
Great Video Tutorial! Great Dad also!
Wish I would have seen this before replacing the Filler Neck! Smoke test was showing smoke coming from filler neck area even after new dealer gas cap. I did not block the Larger bent tube going to filler neck during smoke test. So I thought there may have been a crack in the filler neck. But after replacing the new neck, I inspected the old one and saw no signs of damage and realized the vent connection to the plastic sleeve on filler neck is not sealed. Which is where the smoke will leak from if the check valve isn’t working.

Thank you for your videos!! Because of you I had the courage to change out the Catalytic Converter on My Toyota Corolla!! You helped save me a TON of MoNey!!
Hi Lyla, Welcome!! Please keep watching my videos. Check out my apparel store www.cafepress.com/fixitangel
A Toyota Mechanics day off? Great video, and thank you for not going to the bathroom the entire job!
Love the Jack modification great work and the video work is fantastic thanks my friend
I’m so proud of you Kabayan. Thank you for uploading. It’s another job well done👍
Bro my engine has a pupping sound under the gas tank can it be the vent valve that has a crack and the pressure escape throw it and the sensor don't work correctly cause there no pressure to trigger the canister sensor and the purge silonoid sensor
Hi, good job my friend.....
i was checking some other channels, but the way you work and is clear to see the parts you are replacement........everything you are doing.....you are showing us.......thank u.....
QUESTION?
how u did on the floor jacket the metal flat thing and the big table .

Thanks for that video I’ll be doing that soon I’m not a mechanic but believe me I know I do ok .your video very straightforward don’t pay attention to dumb comets,I’ll see other videos and all they do is talk talk and talk like they know what they doing but they make lot’s of mistakes through out the video ... again thanks for the video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Love the kids!! Great video on a very involved job- lots of attachments!
Idol I’ve always watching your videos and I’ve learn a lot you are a messing, thank for sharing your talent god bless
Thinking this is what is wrong with my 98 Rav4 with code p0441. Great video, very helpful.
Such a real life dad video..great stuff. Im doin mine next.
If i got all the tool you got i be doing all the work myself but i getting tire fixing ;) i change my oil when it is due never took to the dealer. Brake change, air filter, the usually easy maintenace ;) you have a passion keep it up been watching your video sometime ;) And plus you always have time for your kids ;)
That's a fantastic work. All the hard work just to replace the check valve fuel. :)
Wow. That is lot of work! Good job.
I have P0455 and P0441 (gross or large evap leak) 2010 Toyota Rav4 103k miles
Replaced gas cap with oem (because I saw the "O" ring was torn. Now I think I need to test canister (vsv, purge solenoid and proper venting) before attempting this feat! Canister is very expensive though $600-$1000. I might try blowing it out, or getting from pull a part or yard first.
This is a good try after I've exhausted the above!
Thanks ! -Rob
A boy and a girl !how lucky are you! Angel
Goggles, dust mask and sturdy shoes required here, OSHA or not. And I wouldn't let kids near a car on jack stands. However this video gives me an appreciation of why my mechanic charged what he did.
Cute daughter, great father. 2017 my daughter was 2.
Man that sucked that the drive shaft had to be removed.Good job angel
Smart little girl, helping her Dad.
wow.. pinoy is still the best mechanics ever.. saludo kami sayo kabayn..
Much props and its nice to know even a certified mechanic vents with the occasional "what the f***"
Too funny!!
all substance no talk. rare thing on youtube.
Dude, great no bullshit video! Also, dope ass custom gas tank lift. Haha
Good video love the children playing while you work
Excellent, go getter, very pro Mechanic definitely knowledgeable. I really enjoyed watching you get to that pump or whatever it is.
Thank you for sharing Sir ...🏁🏁
Hei Angel get those hose pliers at harbour freight they work good man and they are not expensive
Very good video. I like the gas tank plate you made for your jack.
Brilliant video, I really like the camera angles, your GoPro shots were excellent. Dang, I should have got a 12 ton set, instead got a second 6 ton set. As you say, higher is better for some things. Spooky to see it tipped forward so much on a sloping driveway, lots of pressure on those chocked front wheels. Wouldn't you feel safer facing uphill?
You could also just cut an access hole into the floorboard under the rear seats. Took me 5 min to cut the hole and i avoided all of this just to change the check valve lol
Angel always on point 👌👍👏
Vraiment vous être un pro you are à profetional goud lock i am said halhal from algeria nord africa
Amazing repair work! Adorable little girl!
always good content! God Bless Kuya! and hats off to the camera person and editor.. whew THAT is alot of work , time/effort.. and its aWESome and magandang!
You use dielectric silicone to install rubber seals and bushings, I use the 3M Silicone paste which is also dielectric silicone. I use it for installing o-rings, coolant hoses, vacuum lines, etc. So useful & won't damage any plastics, rubbers, just plane safe. Great job on your video. I have a strong gasoline smell also on my 91 4runner but only when I drive it, but not when it's parked. First I will check and clean up my charcoal canister. If that's not the problem then I will replace this fuel tank valve since it's nearly 30 years old, I can't go wrong even if that's not the problem. Fuel pump is new though.
18,19,...30. precious times! Thumbs up to Great Dad's 🎉
weren't canisters located in the engine bay on the 96-99. wish mine was a 99 got this problem on my 02 Thanks again! gonna tackle this before the new year

I have a 1991 toyota hilux /winnebago warrior motorhome. very high pressure in gas tank. I checked the vent line, its clear. the service mgr. at toyota tells me its the ORVR on top of tank but parts dept. says its not available anymore. Am I screwed ? Great video by the way !

Thank you!!! for investing that time.... for us!!!!!
nice video. very informative and entertaining kids. thumb up.
Seems like common issues with toyotas/lexus's. If time comes for my GS300, I will be reinforcing the seams with some epoxy. Thanks for the content
Fantastic, I enjoy your videos and they are very informative, thank you for sharing.
You are pro man, good job
are you referring to the canister vent control valve in your description as the charcoal canister under the hood by the brake booster
Hi Angel. Thanks for the vids.
With this part that you changed, if only fumes leak out, some silicone would seal it up good; what do you think?
I know a pro-job like yours would replace for new to not have customers bringing it back but do you think it would work?
I’m not familiar with the inside of the valve and mine is leaking but I’m thinking about trying a quick fix. Just wondering your thoughts.
UA-camCertified hi, watch this video on what i did on the overfill check valve. You can do the same. ua-cam.com/video/W5ssFJdiBdc/v-deo.html start at 19:28 on that video
Angel; I don’t know how I missed your reply. Thanks so much. I’m going to try the jb weld-epoxy. Be well bro
Again thank you
