Tkd in the 90s, we'd have our hands up. It was hard, fast & effective. This is how you get messed up. Nowadays tkd is great for kids as a warm up to something more serious.
It's not about being rough and trying to kill the other person. This isn't mma or boxing. It's about strategy and precision. It's still a combat sport, just different tradition and rules.
@@Cpcp9696 yea it’s a trend for parents to drop off their children at a taekwondo school, like a daycare lol. Taekowndo IS dying and making way for martial arts such as MMA and BJJ (currently the fastest growing, and much more realistic).
@@TheSquirrleGuy ITF hasn’t been watered down as much as WT, but too call it “real and brutal” seems like an exaggeration. Have you seen modern ITF competitions? It’s not full contact, they wear way too much protection and the rules are way too many. Calling it brutal when there’s arts like Muay Thai, MMA, Lethwei, combat sambo? And I’m not saying that bjj should be used alone. It should most preferably be with a striking art. But at least having knowledge of what to do if you end up on the ground or how to defend against takedowns goes a long way.
I hate Olympic sparring, it has always been a silly game far removed from actual martial arts. The electronic sensors made it even worse, since now the whole game has devolved into trying to get the sensors to react and give you points (using increasingly silly techniques to do so) instead of actually trying to defeat/damage your opponent. For the record - I have been doing Taekwondo since 1997 and am currently a 4th dan. I run a small school where we spar more similarly to kickboxing, because I refuse to partake in this embarrassing disgrace.
Interesting. The ref doesn't allow the competition to descend into a 'scrum,' so both competitors are pretty much loose and relaxed, the entire fight. Taekwondo kicking takes advantage of more than just flexibility. A few kicks, in this bout, were from angles you only see with uppercuts. People might think these guys are kinda 'light weight' in terms of being a bad as's, but these guys don't walk around, in public, scared. Another interesting thing. I saw the photos, before the fight, and I noticed the Korean has a very long neck. Then they showed both fighters and the Tunisian guy has an even longer neck. This looks like a good sport fighting competition for people, who want to experiment with the reality of skill as a function of being loose and relaxed. MMA people know this is true, but when they fight, it descends into a scrum, pretty quickly. And when it does, both fighters spam conditioning, stamina, and aggression.
What the hell!!! I was active in TWD in the late 80's and early 90's - 6 years, red/black belt and took part in around 12 tournaments. Got knocked out twice in the times, team partner of mine got his jaw broken, my trainer broke one guys rip twice with a double dwit chagi. I know, it sounds like showing off, but on my grandmothers grave, it is true. WHAT THE HELL is this?? I've went after my TWD times to kick boxing and Jiu, so I haven't followed TWD anymore, but this is pathetic. It's slow and powerless. In kick boxing I ate so many jabs and crosses in the beginning, but everyone was carefull when I was in kicking range, this looks like an amateur first trial sparring. I feel ashamend for the sport.
Concur! Got my black belt in 86, sparred in tournaments for a few years, swollen knees, shins, foot insteps, internal injuries even with a vest! There wasn't any mandatory head gears then, only need a vest & groin guard😁 That was the golden era of true TKD IMHO!

@@teovu5557 Someone said its because of the Olympics. They don´t wanna see knockouts like in 2004. Some others have said its because of the poor referee decisions. The ref couldn't keep up with the fast pace kicking, and because of that the olympic games could have seen as corrupt. I can see why they tried to change the point system but they also changed the entire sport. I hope TKD leaves Olympic sport and become its own again. 2007 world champ was the peak TKD which made me love it.
If you were talking about the ones at the beginning, it's to make sure the electronic chest pads and the electronic socks are calibrated correctly, the points are all based on electronic signals.
To add onto what Ruben said, there’s sensors on the feet as well, and when connected to the head/chest gear it gives the player a point. It’s how you get points during sparring. Kicking the chest piece gives you 2 points for each normal kick (roundhouse, cut kick, etc), and you get an additional 2 points if you add a spin to the kick (tornado kick/turning roundhouse, spinning hook kick, spinning/jumping back kick, etc). For head it’s 3 points, and adding a turn kick equals to 5 points. The chest and head are the only parts of the body that will get you points :) hope this helped a bit and answered your question
at this point, korea is being favourited every world cup. Every point korean players scores it counts, but like only 50% of points his opponent from another country is counted
i was lucky enough to do real taekwondo in my life. not this crap. even with my years off I would sleep those fragile "competitors" that lead leg bs would get blasted thru
Didn’t ever expect TKD match this ugly nowadays.. you can easily get the point by touching slightly your foot to other’s head guard without any impact or using good kicking techniques… other time, you did good and strong dolyo chagi, make your opp bounce, but didn’t get any points just bcz the kit didn’t “sense” it… Good job WTF, keep going..
I honestly think that someone with zero knowledge in taekwondo, who knew basic boxing could dominate the entire world of taekwondo. Just clinch up and throw a hard punch from the clinch.
Man your 💯 right on this. My son compete is TKD sparring and I am now starting to show him the importance of the punch. It’s very effective for scoring easy points. 👍🏾
tkd isn't a kick based martial art. sure there are a lot of kicks in tkd, but in old school tkd, we learn how to grapple, throw, kick, grab, punch, knee, elbow, etc. people don't seem to realize that tkd has a lot more to offer than just kicks
The problem with that is throwing a punch from the clinch exposes your head on the side you’re punching with and kicks to the head are 3 points whereas punches are only 1 point, not an ideal trade off
