Black Watercolor Swan 🖤 Step-by-Step Painting Tutorial with Winsor & Newton

In this video, I am going to show you how to paint a realistic black swan with watercolors. We will cover:
1. How to create a sense of realism on paper, when using black watercolor pigment. How to avoid "flat" looking black - even when you are using black pigment straight from the tube.
2. How to simplify and abstract the feather shapes. How to use variation in brush stroke thickness, direction and length to create a realistic effect.
3. Using black watercolor pigments: Pros and Cons. Why mixing your blacks from other pigments that reveal cool or warm colors creates more realism in your work. I will also explain the reason why I am using black straight from the tube here (for the first time in years).

Stunning as usual Anna! I'm not use to seeing you paint dark subjects!😉 The hardest part of painting dark subjects is capturing the luster. It's never just a flat tone, that's why I don't typically use "tube" black. I tend to mix my own blacks, My favorites are indigo & burnt umber for more of a transparent black or cobalt & trans red oxide for more of a grey/black that granulates & separates creating a ton of colour variation.

Wonderful tutorial. I never used black in my paintings, until recently. I discovered Lamp Black by W/N fades quite a lot; whereas, Lamb Black by Daniel Smith does not. Also DS , when added to a large area of wet on wet technique is the only one I've found so far, that "whooshes". A technique I've used for fuzzy feathers. I appreciate all your subtle warm and cool touches in this swan. It has given me an idea for painting a person's hair that is primarily black; but, has undertones of blue and purple. Your video was very useful....I might come back and paint the swan....it is beautiful.
As a beginner, I bought lampblack. As my palette grew, I gave it to a friend, because I thought, I would not need it anymore, I could mix my own darks. As I get more advanced, I buy more and more blacks for their specific properties. A Marsblack for mixing and achieving granulation. A Neutralblack for monochromatic studies. DS moonglow for those times, when I dont want to mix my own. Probably next time, I will not rebuy moonglow and instead mix my own in a bigger amount. So in my opinion, there is a journey for black as it is for watercolor. (by the way: today I would not give away the lampblack)
This is so interesting! I had a somewhat similar experience in the beginning. I think as we get more and more experienced, our appreciation for different properties of each pigment grows and we re-discover new ways of making the best use of every color. So cool! I never knew about the controversy surrounding black in the watercolor world. Watching this video probably saved me from being mugged by watercolor nazis- seriously, though, I was impressed by the fact that the whole surface of the image was painted at some point, and yet there were still spots, like the feather tips, that looked white because of the layering. Very cool.

I agree with you about black color and I think that it's not so bad if you use black from the tube for some detailes and diferent styles, it's all good if you paint a beautiful art with it ;) I used the most of mixed up 'black' in one of my fantasy paintings (moon fairy) and I think I did it justice - if it was a pure black from the tube, it would be too 'dirty'... thank you for your great tutorial and inspiration - you explained everything very well! have a great day! 💖😍💖 Marija

There are no real rules in watercolor. However, the reason that black is discouraged is that the painting has many colors, but the black is a lack of color. Therefore, not only is it opaque, rather than transparent, but looks like holes in the painting. So, most watercolor artists mix black from Alizarin Crimson and Phthalo Green and Blue. This creates transparency and you shift the mix to create the colored tinge under the black that matches the painting.
Hi Anna! What do you think of the W&N synthetic sable brush? Hope does it compare to the Escoda Versatil and Ultimo? I imagine the Ultimo is much softer and has less snap and no sharp tip. Also how does the W&N brush compare to real sable?
