Wow! I love the nostalgia of a lot of these old videos, but this one actually surprised me. I had no idea his Wayne character dated this far back before even Saturday night live(Wayne's world movie was 92, so almost a decade before that). This was a really neat find.
coffeeveins I was convinced that Wayne's World was a rip off of Bobby VS The Devil from Kids in the hall, until I saw all the Wayne Campbell stuff from CBC in the 80s.
Born in 1990, Wayne’s World has been my favorite movie since I stopped watching cartoons. Never had an interest in even watching the SNL skits, but today decided to look up the history. This is crazy! And 10 years before Wayne’s World. I’ve never seen Mike Meyers this young, actually I think he’s more attractive 10 years later & with the black wig. ☺️
He really doesnt, seeing him now makes me feel ancient, however i do actually look like im in my late 20s but im 45. Mike is a reinforced reminder that imma look like him soon.
Grant Schweitzer I just saw a video from 1986 and thought that was the earliest version of Wayne, to then seeing this. What a trip to see the his evolution!
Story: When porting his variety to SNL, producer Lorne Michaels (A fellow Canadian btw) warned Myers that Toronto/Canada humor doesn't float well state side, but after some discussion they retooled and swapped Wayne Campbell's backdrop from "Toronto" to "Chicago" Also, at that same time there was a shortfall of skits to squeeze Dana Carvey in so under 20 minutes they threw on a wig and added a co-host: Garth As for Myers Scotsman: Mike Myers growing up in Canada had distant in laws from Scotland who visited multiple times. A childhood growing up hearing their accents he self taught how to nail the Scots accent. Also: Myers childhood also had Jewish neighbors who had the New York accent and he learned to speak like an old Jewish lady for his Cawfee Tawlk skits
Still close, this is early or mid 83’ and Ed/Chris started writing Bill and Ted in summer 84’!! Keanu also spent time in the Toronto area just like Myers, specifically in the early eighties, so yeah he probably got that from this!
I was wondering if the writers and/or actors of Bill & Ted saw this! It seems like more than a coincidence! I also wonder how Mike felt when he saw the movie in 1989 (his first year on SNL).
I came here after reading Mike Myers' book titled 'Canada', which has stories of his early career. Mike tells about how he knew Christopher Ward of MTV back when they were both in the Second City touring company, and Christopher offered Mike a guest spot on the City Limits show. Mike went with his character "Wayne Campbell" and pretended to be Christopher's cousin from Scarborough, who had snuck past security and crashed the show. It was such a successful performance that some viewers were fooled into thinking they were letting punks from Scarborough onto Canadian airwaves. Mike would continue to do guest spots on the show as Wayne Campbell in '85 and '86.
No, that looks been around.. 1987, 88 was the start to everyone wearing flannels and rock tees and chucks... I grew up in Dayton, Ohio and it was very popular among the hooligans
This changes everything. In the debate over which came first, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure or Wayne's World, until now I was firmly in the Bill and Ted camp, especially after learning that the film was in the can for two years before being released in 1989. But after hearing Wayne say "Bogus!" in this clip from 1984 in a very similar tone and cadence as what B&T later would, and knowing that early drafts had Bill and Ted timetravel in a VAN instead of a phonebooth, I'm wavering. Possible kleptoamnesia?
Matheson and Solomon started writing the script in Summer 84 according to the Bill & Ted 2005 DVD Bonus Disc interviews, when the two were 24 and 23 respectively Solomon had written on Laverne and Shirley as the youngest writer in the Acting Guild was able to pull Matheson in with their improv characters (apparently there was also a third, coincidentally like Wayne’s cousin and Garth’s brother later on) Both are California natives, but Keanu and his family moved to Toronto in 1980 and according to Ed & Chris Keanu and Alex came in to the audition the same way they portrayed them on screen Myers is three to four years younger than Ed & Chris, but Keanu is the same age!
Hard to imagine the guy with Mike Myers wrote the song Black Velvet which Alannah Myles insisted she be allowed to record ... and so she skyrocketed into existence with that song.
Whelp Keanu Reeves did grow up in Yorkville Ont, & worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Company circa '84 so it's likely Reevres was familiar these City Limits skits. Reeves & Myers are roughly the same age.
Interesting.. The vj for alternative/metal was a soft pop singer songwriter (I don't get that leap but hey whatever works) and on every City Limits ever .. Helix.
Ninjamohawk You say that (to make yourself feel better, be honest) , but look where he took it! Humble beginnings, kept going & honing it to then undeniably being known & loved world wide. Pretty damn great I’d say.
Never knew that the "Wayne's World" concept went back this far!
Obviously where he had the idea for Wayne's World. Excellent and part on!
Great Proto Wayne here.
Me neither. Its awesome seeing the earlier form of Wayne's World.

I was 6 in 83
Like A Wayne's World prequel. Brilliant
he turned this into a feature movie and a fortune. Boy he got lucky.
young mike myers really does it for me whew
Same, such a cute face. I'd date a young Mike Myers, think of the laughs you'd get too.

1975 in The King of Kensington
That just goes to show you not to squander any opportunities put before you. You'll never know where they may take you.
100% correct!
Precisely.
Even at age 59, like Myers still looks like he's in his twenties he looks wonderful.
HAPPY 60th bday, mike!
No he doesn't. He looks like Steve Martin.
Mike*
He really doesnt, seeing him now makes me feel ancient, however i do actually look like im in my late 20s but im 45. Mike is a reinforced reminder that imma look like him soon.
Fucking awesome seeing the beginning of ideas and what they can turn into if you persist. Thanks for posting this.
Grant Schweitzer I just saw a video from 1986 and thought that was the earliest version of Wayne, to then seeing this. What a trip to see the his evolution!
Wow Myers so young and so thin. It does not even look like him. So surreal!!
Oh look my comment from 3 years ago!!

The genesis of Wayne's World....
At first I thought Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was made before Wayne's World & after watching this it's the other way around.
Still close, this is early or mid 83’ and Ed/Chris started writing Bill and Ted in summer 84’!!
Keanu also spent time in the Toronto area just like Myers, specifically in the early eighties, so yeah he probably got that from this!
So this is where Keanu got "Excellent!" and the twiddle doodley doo air guitar part
He grew up in Toronto!!! At least from 1980 onward, so he definitely would have seen this
I was wondering if the writers and/or actors of Bill & Ted saw this! It seems like more than a coincidence! I also wonder how Mike felt when he saw the movie in 1989 (his first year on SNL).
Looks and sounds a lot like both Terry and Deaner from FUBAR too... Classic hozer type that maybe even helped carve out Bob and Doug McKenzie
I don't know any of this this is awesome

Ward was very generous in the skits, too.
*MuchMusic! Canada's cooler version of MTV!
Ward co-wrote Black Velvet. I seem to remember that he left Much to manage Alannah Myles. Talented guy.
Mike Myers was already grunge before grunge
Dan B lol..naw we've been wearing flannel in Canada forever, lol. Flannel lumberjackets never go oot of style.
Wayne was a banger as in head banger. Don't get that confused with grunge.
No, that looks been around.. 1987, 88 was the start to everyone wearing flannels and rock tees and chucks... I grew up in Dayton, Ohio and it was very popular among the hooligans
@@angrykermit3192 grunge and Metal were intertwined🤘💀🤘
@@MissOhio1980 Not in the minds of true bangers lol.
I've had pizza pizza before, that was in Belleville, Ontario where I came from. There's a pizza pizza and a chicken chicken in Ontario.
I think in the 80s, Pizza Pizza was distinctly an Ontario based food franchise. Now it's Canada wide!
Now I see where the Fat Bastard/Shrek thing came from lol
It's amazing what a perfect nursery Canadian television was for infant global superstars.
is it still?
Wayne, his angry Scots character...wow, he really just pulled from his old trunk by the time he got to SNL.
And he also did Dieter on one of these Canadian shows first. I think Linda Richman was new for SNL though.
@@jedijones Linda Richman was just a temporary-permanant sub for Paul Baldwin. Let's tawk.
party on!!!!
Wow I didn’t know Wayne was such an old character

Btw thanks for mentioning this because I’ve seen very little people bring this up nowadays!
Mike was born to play Wayne Campbell.
Woah this is crazy
I too am in the The PARTYers Almanac.
That angry Scot sketch was just preparation for the role of Shrek
So you've never been to Canada eh?
Or the role of "dad" in So I married an axe murderer!
Hard to imagine the guy with Mike Myers wrote the song Black Velvet which Alannah Myles insisted she be allowed to record ... and so she skyrocketed into existence with that song.
Did y'all see him in The King Of Kensington when he was like, 12 or something!? Adorable and vulgar🤘😆
Anyone here still hanging out at Fairview?
Do you mean the big shopping centre in the west island of Montreal?
Origans of Wayne's World 😊
Wayne's world lol party on excellent 👌
3:30 Mike being Shrek in the 1980s
Whelp Keanu Reeves did grow up in Yorkville Ont, & worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Company circa '84 so it's likely Reevres was familiar these City Limits skits. Reeves & Myers are roughly the same age.
he had to be a Strange Brew fan
Agreed, eh.
Much music!!!
'83-'86: city limits wayne
'87-power minute wayne
'89-present: SNL Wayne
Sounds like a very skinny version of Fat Bastard starting at 3:27
daniel morris and the Scottish dad in his movie So i Married An Axe Murderer.
@@quentin3330 Don't forget Stuart Rankin on SNL.
Was City Limits some kind of SNL/SCTV genre show? I can’t find anything on it
It was a music video show, with lots of comedy sketches as the host Christopher Ward trained at Second City
Looks like David Lee Roth with a hat.
Wow. Wayne’s World! Cool
And a young Fat Bastard 😂
He looks like Dave Mustaine with the red hair and Good Year hat on
Always wearing hats and wigs 🤔, I never realised he was bald.
Interesting..
The vj for alternative/metal was a soft pop singer songwriter (I don't get that leap but hey whatever works)

He reminds me of Jagger for some reason.
I'm Scottish, and I think thats a great Scottish accent. He really does it well.
So Wayne Campbell was originally a hoser.
I'd say so eh.
Exttreme closeup
Lol to 1:52
Kind of reminds me of Dave Mustaine
I'm beclemt.
Ha!
He was um....not great huh.
