I really struggled when I went to Sheffield recently. Just so many dick heads about and our gear isn't cheap. Safety in numbers for sure. I think the bigger and more popular the city the more accepting people are. When I went to Manchester nobody even second glanced me. Do that in Sheffield and everyone seemed to notice. Manchester northan Q, seeing somebody with a camera is nothing new in that area or Manchester China Town. A lot of the worry is in our heads and I'll be honest I really struggle. Not sure if it's embarrassment, like I like daft or I'm worrying people think I'm a wierdo and may approach me. I wish I could shake that feeling. I feel like everyday folks just don't understand what it is we find interesting.
Just found I never replied to this. It’s coincidental as I went to Manchester over the weekend but with a couple of other photographers. I shot mainly people and yes, felt slightly uneasy but soon just zoned out. It probably helped as I wasn’t alone and it was very busy. I also got a feel what was right and choose by subjects wisely. It was the best fun I’ve had in a long time 👍👍
Finding this very interesting thanks James , although I am a Landscape shooter most of my favourite photos and photographers are street photographers from the film days , Fan Ho , Elliot Erwitt etc . I’ve done a bit of Urban recently in Brighton and they are some of my favourite photos , look forward to more from you in this genre. If you don’t know him already check out AOWS on UA-cam , brilliant b&w images and inspiring thought processes on compositions and contrast
It’s funny isn’t it as some of my favs are Joel Meyerowitz, Viv Maier recently. I’m just attracted to the character of these types of images. Executing it is the challenge. AOWS is excellent, being a BW photographer. Cheers Andy 👍👍
This urban venture is really interesting and I really look forward to your vlogs about Bradford as I have known it since I got married there in 1978. I bought my first decent camera (Rank Rangefinder 35) as a student in 1970 to document the disappearing Salford slums and sad to say I no longer have those pictures. But that process of going out into poor areas of a city to take pictures was really challenging. I salute you James.
Thanks Keith. Where in Bradford were you married? It’s so important to document why we see now, especially of a city that is close to me, full of history.
@@JamesRBurnsVLOG I have done a bit of searching and I think it was on Manor Row but may no longer exist. I do recall the old Forster Square and I think we bought our ring at Fattorinis. Geraldine's (Mrs R) family lived in Silverhills Rd at Moor End and we got married from there. I remember Geraldine buying the material for her wedding dress from a fantastic haberdashers in town and a sewing machine that weighed a ton (we still have it). We bought our dinner service from John St market. She went to St Joseph's college in Cunliffe where her father was caretaker. Her brother was a police officer and an early attendee at the Valley Parade fire in 1985 which was very traumatic for him. I really liked visiting family in the city and have fond memories from Bradford and my sister in law still lives there.
I've been really enjoying your videos! I'm in Canada- and am coming to Yorkshire for vacation and I'm getting lots of ideas from you. Here in Canada I've been a hi-vis type field worker in a major city- and would have tourists taking my pic all the time with my orange against old buildings and views. Most people don't find it a problem- like you said- just say they are interesting with their colours- for us the big thing is to be assured that you aren't taking pictures for a complaint- or to submit it to management... otherwise- everyone likes to have the feeling they are interesting😆. one time someone took my picture of me in orange coveralls standing over a lifting grate/hatchway into the underground (that goes under the sidewalk) holding a broom.. I thought at the time the guy was crazy- but later thought it would have been cool to see it- it might have been interesting shot.
Hi James, just started photographing the heritage buildings of Dewsbury for an architectural record, using a shift/tilt lens. The local council, Kirklees is planning a major town centre upgrade/change, I'm going to record all the streets before the work begins. I've found there are 57 historical buildings in the town and 128 grade 1 & 2 in and immediately around the town. It's going to take some time to research and document the history.
Just catching up on comments. That sounds a great idea Paul before it’s all gone. Dewsbury is very near by but I’m actually planning on heading to Saltaire shortly, plenty of history there! Cheers
@@JamesRBurnsVLOG hi, Saltaire is an amazing area. I have taken some "good" night shots, even better after rain with cobbles by the railway station. The canal/mills are great at dusk with light from the street lamps and windows.
I bet if you engaged with those high vis guys and explained you were more interested in the colours they would have been completely fine with it. It would help to have an Instagram, FB page or website that you can point them towards for an idea of your photography work to show that most of the time people are not the main focus especially if you enjoy making them anonymous. Keep up the great work. Subbed for more 👍
Not a bad idea and probably next time, if a similar occasion arises, I may just do that. One of my collections is going to be focused on those candid moments and no doubt, I may not have time to or the need to explain my purpose. A good idea to carry a business card perhaps. Glad you are enjoying this new venture and appreciate the support. Cheers Doog 👍👍😬
Looks like an interesting project you got on the go there mate, you seemed to have grown in confidence over a very short period with photographing scenes including people, its not easy and then trying to record a vlog as well in public is not as easy as people think. Look forward to seeing how you develop this project as you go and your take on the city. Take care mate 🙂
It certainly isn’t easy but I’m slowly getting the hang of it. Looking forward to how these collections and projects develop. All good fun. Cheers Lee 👍👍
James, you stand out like a sore thumb, trainers jeans, Tee shirt and a jacket, one camera one lens. You could have asked them, did they mind being included in the shot and offered to send them a copy! For sure it pays to be streetwise, imagine what is like for a lone female going through a subway. Another good morning out for you in the end.
Certainly a much different approach on the streets and hoping to return shortly. I prefer the move on approach, didn’t want the photograph to be staged as it were. Don’t feel the need for permission but for courtesy maybe.
Belter, some chuckles, some superb urban vision and mostly all still James. Susan Perb good pal!
Great project, looking forward to seeing this unfold. Another successful outing I'd say, you still have all your gear, and no stab wounds. 👍
Good luck with the project James. 💯
Thanks for taking us along with you!

Fun to see you out in an urban setting. I’m enjoying this series you’re working on.
Im pleased you’re enjoying it. Looking forward to continuing to add to it 👍
Looking forward to more, James
Cheers Dave, hopefully out again tomorrow 👍
Great video and pictures James

That’s interesting to know Susan. Seems like you make quite an interesting model. Enjoy Yorkshire. Thank you 👍
You said keep smiling, then you told the fountain to make an effort. That did it for me.

I live in Bradford, I keep meaning to do some urban/street but I feel very awkward doing it. I might have to give it a go after watching your video 👍
It’s a very interesting place to be honest Carl. Go for it. Cheers 👍👍

@@JamesRBurnsVLOG It sometimes helps with diffusing a situation should it arise and you can claim another project, street portraits lol.
