The Vari Electric Standing Desk Review: Functional but Flawed

  • Overall, the Vari Electric Standing Desk is a comfortably-sized unit with a standard feature set. Its key selling points are the ease of assembly and the absolutely gorgeous finish. But high costs and questionable materials prevent the desk from being the top choice when it comes to incorporating a standing desk into your home or office setup.
While we really wanted to like the Vari Electric Standing Desk, the manufacturer is going to have to make some upgrades to both the materials and the feature set if it wants to justify Vari’s unreasonably high price.

UPDATE: I asked Vari's customer support about this, and they got back to me the next day. They said that no surface that you can touch (like the paint or the desktop) has any lead in it. Some of the electronics inside the control box contains lead (which is fairly standard for the electronics industry - lead free solder has a lot of undesirable characteristics). And all of this is protected/isolated by rubber and plastic.
I don't know how this affects anyone else's decision, but I feel a lot better about this and will be buying the 48" version.
    Original post:
Wow - thanks so much for pointing out the prop 65 issue. I was just about to buy one of these - and I still might. But first I'm messaging with Vari's customer support to ask them about the nature of the warning. If it's an issue with the electronic solder, I think I'm ok with that. If it's the paint on the legs or something in the motor or bearings that could become airborne, I'll probably pass. I'll let you know here what they say.

Seems pretty extreme to dock points off of a desk because of an omnipresent warning found on nearly everything in California (even Disneyland!) without them simply checking with Vari about which elements have lead/lead compounds in it.
Thanks for doing the legwork and verifying many of our hunches Ted- leaded solder is definitely still extremely common in so many modern electronics, and not worth ignoring/docking points from the product itself. I'd be more concerned about those lower price point desks they're referencing if they don't have a prop 65 warning (as they most likely still have leaded solder in the electronics but have opted to not mention it).
Also, as some others have noted, there is an anti-collision functionality built in but it has to actually collide with something without give (ie hitting a chair/leg/shelf vs extra weight added to the desktop by hand).
Overall a good quality video and detailed review, but some questionable things suggested that could have been confirmed/verified with Vari before making a detailed video about it.
      6/10 video ;)

I bought the desk recently and there is anti-collision. When the table hits my chair it immediately stops going down and goes up a few inches. I don't know how you are testing this. The table holds 50-100 pounds on average and placing a hand on it while it is rising obviously it not enough to trigger the anti-collision. You should update your review.

The California lead warning is on almost every tool that I buy, a steel hammer with a wood handle might come with a label. I think that it is just in case something "could possibly" contain lead, they are covered. If your kids are digging around inside where they might contact some solder, the possibility that it might contain lead is the least of your worries. I would not want to pay anything for "anti-collision" protection for such a table. Some way to lock the controls would be much cheaper and more effective than adding anti-collision electronics to reduce the risk of damage or injury. What happened to common sense?

I have vitamins with a Prop 65 warning on the label. I live in CA and just about every item on my desk - from electrical components to coffee mugs - came with Prop 65 warnings. Nanny state nonsense.

Where are you able to find a stable/reliable 30x60 standing desk for around $300-450? You state in the video that there are other products for half to two thirds the price with more features. I've spent the last week looking into a standing desk and for a size of 60x30 with a decent reputation I can't find much to be honest. It seems once you jump to 60x30 and above the price shoots anywhere from $750 into the thousands plus tax. Right now the Vari 60x30 is priced at $600.

Maybe the lead was used to soldering the word in the circuits, which is pretty normal, I don't know if they use it for the painting, but if it's so, not good, but for the electric soldering, event medical equipment is still using lead.

Hey, I'm aslo considering this desk for my new computer build. At first, I was really concerning about this warning sign, but than I found out my new RTX 3090 graphic card has same warning sign sticker on it. So that mean my graphic card is also causing for cancer? Specially there are so many fans blowing on my computer case. Now I'm really confused.🤔

Sorry but your 'this desk can poison me' complaint doesn't make any sense. They sent you a review unit....reach out to them and ask for explanation? That sorta shoulda been your first action. This could be a completely benign and normal thing on all standing desks and you are smearing them for it. California has ridiculous disclaimers on certain things but not others.
nvm you are actually right. And its not that the lead parts are self-contained there is exposure on every part of the desk including any desks with no lead components. The levels have certification so they are fine for company usage, but unless you know alot about lead exposure and what is fine and isnt I wouldn't feel good about having this in the home.
