David Copperfield Breaks Down Magic Scenes from Movies | GQ
I thought this guy was dead, his name is whispered in legends, borderline mythical, glad he's doing well.
He is performing at the MGM in Vegas now, saw him a few months ago, pretty good show, very entertaining
I thought so too. I thought he died in the 90s or something.
Same thought 🤣 His name everywhere but rarely making appearances or news in any media.
@@Sorkastic also saw him a few months back! Got lucky enough to pick the seats where he emerges. Scared the crap outta me! But was soo cool!
That's mf magic right lol
The dude who vanished an airplane is impressed by a napkin origami dog bone.
bro hahahahaha 😂😂😂
it's great to see a legendary magician discover something new.
And that’s on being humble
because he used black magic like cgi and staged things that was unbelievable only for people behind the tv but not in first person
@@Zeph_ Not true, tricks have been explained and it was not cgi or other camera tricks. Audience was also tricked.
I like how he casually says "I vanished a plane once" as if it was something completely normal.
You might remember it as MH370
I vanished a bowel movement once.
The guy vanished the actual statue of liberty!!! So yeah, plane is sort of Ok.... :-)
IKR!?!?
You do know he didn't vanish anything right? He just had a good special effects crew.
I love the way he's watching the origami bone and genuinely praising it like he wants to use it in a show
Just waiting on his comeback, like most of the stars in retirement end up doing
I love his reaction too. It is a shame though that they used a real bone and not a rawhide bone, which also looked knotted like the napkin.
@@dannyfdana Yes I was thinking the same thing. A rawhide would feel more of a real transition as you said it looks like that napkin.
@@torbennielsen4708 I think they'd have to double down and still end with a real bone, to make the transformation crystal clear on screen. Some people would wonder if it was just the material turning over to reveal another surface, or something. Either way, that particular trick didn't seem authentic. The hand wipe was so quick that it looked like it was probably cut/edited. Doing that trick as shown with an audience in the round also seems dubious.
I love him admitting that Arrested Development was slightly parodying him, and he still has a good laugh about! That's a down to earth guy.
Its an illusion Emerson!
i liked that he’s not so….idk the word but maybe narcissistic that NOTHING could look real to him. he appreciates almost all the magic in this breakdown which is cool
A little more than 'slightly' I would say 😅
And he's humble about it, too.
I love his response. "I think I'm to blame for this." 🤣
Never has someone explained something so much and yet not at all
Lol, right. And it's still satisfying. Almost strange.
Thats magic
Yep.😆
Right?! I was here to learn the secret to the tricks, yet left oddly satisfied that I knew they were mostly legit tricks that I would never know the secret to. Well, except sinking the boat.
Alright then keep your secrets
Is all i feel after watching it lol
I love how humble and respectful DC is in regard to the screen illusions that were clearly CGI and he never belittled them once. Dude is a legend 🤙
For sure!
Because he respects that as the part of the illusion.
He is not a legend. He is a huge douche. At his shows, if children want his autograph, he has them buy a photo, then has his security guards hand him the photo, which he signs (without acknowledging them), then he hands it to a different security guard, who hands it back to the child (who now has less money than before). I only know this, because I was one of those children with less money. I’ll never forget the first huge douche I ever met:) I bet he can’t make a generation of swindled kids bad memories disappear 🤣
@@NeilHamburger "which he signs (without acknowledging them).." without acknowledging whom?, about what?
@@giorgiomx without acknowledging the person he’s signing the autograph for.
David Copperfield, the legend. If you listen closely to him speak he has a rhythm and a tone in his speech that is very practiced. This entire video he stays in perfect tone and never breaks the nature of the character he is presenting. A true magician can hypnotise you and lull you into a slight trance just with speech and that is before a single performance begins. In fact, all of this video is a performance.
I noticed that too lol, great patter
i actually feel calmer listening to dc... 😁
Love this theory man
😏👏🏾
The sorcerer supreme
I’ll never forget how excited I was when my dad took me to David Copperfield’s show when I was a little girl, maybe 4 years old (so around 1994) in Dallas, TX, and he told me to run down the isle and hug David, who was standing in the theatre with some people after the show. I obliged, and ran down the isle to give him a huge hug. Afterwards, my dad bought me a David Copperfield t-shirt that I still wear to this day. My dad passed away a few years ago, but we always shared a love of David Copperfield’s magic. I wonder if David remembers that.
Edit: I know he probably doesn’t remember. I just wanted to tell him, on the off chance he reads the comments on this video, that his shows had a positive impact on my childhood and my relationship with my dad. So David, if you happen to see this, thank you.
@YeshuaTheSon Gonzo bruh
@YeshuaTheSon Gonzo The omniscient YT brain knows. Facts.
@YeshuaTheSon Gonzo you ain’t gotta do em like that
A little girl running up to him, I dont think we forget things like that.
No one cares,little girl
"It's pretty risky, pointing a gun at some... mustached dude." Best quote
Actually I changed my mind. "It's a method. Probably could have worked" is somehow better
Someone should have told Arec Bardwin that.
@@whiskeyrebellion4390 ouch
The real magic trick is that he is 65 years old and looking like that.
BTW, it’s also awesome that he remains so up to date.
That seals it, he's a warlock
I had to double check. He looks amazing.
Imo, he would look even more awesome, and more like a warlock, with his natural hair. :) Seriously, though, he'd wear that look so well.
It's not magic.............. it' s Maybelline!
He wears a muscle suit. Not joking. It's tough to see under theatrical lighting while he's moving around and you have other things to look at like his assistant or the illusion. First thing you notice if it's just him.
Worked so many of his shows backstage that it's ridiculous.
What a legend. The humility and kindness, instead of roasting the scenes, speaks volumes about this man.
I could listen to his voice all they long, no matter what topic, what a soothing voice he has, calm and chill
I was thinking the same. Hes a great storyteller too. Maybe one day he invites me to sleepover and tells me a bedtime story.
Agreed. He needs to do a "calm"story
He should do audio books...
First, he did not laugh at any of those clips or saying they were not realistic so fake whatsoever, showing his respect to the movie industry and understanding their limitation; second, he always said "we did that" or "we created something", attributing the achievements to that of his team, or the magic industry as a whole. He is more than an illusionist, he is truly leading the industry to achieve wonders.
Yeah, I appreciate how much he namechecked other people.
I mean he's a magician, he made a living out of faking things, he's honest about not laughing at things that are fake even if are made with CGI
You legitimately got the world's greatest magician to breakdown magic tricks in films?!? HOW?!?!
Money. Lots of it.
@beep boop Money is magical.
@@XanderEwald
He makes over $60 mil a year. I wonder if money is even motivating to him at this point.
@@shaun374 Unlikely. At least sums of money that motivate normal people. He is probably most motivated by trying to do something that has never been done before. The challenge is the motivation.
They asked nicely?
The way he just casually says he inspired the Now You See Me series as if he was talking about a barber appointment he has 😂
David Copperfield's greatest illusion, at 65 years old, is that head full of luxurious dark brown hair.
Lmaaaoopp
good wig 😆😆🤣🤣
Good surgeon
I'm sure he called on the local wizard for that trick.
It's an illusion.
I love how he laughs at Gob's magic show and admits that he's probably who they're making fun of.
Yeah
It was his fault
😂
Not probably
I remember him and Doug Henning ~ quite flamboyant. Doug was more so
When he said he made a plane disappear and didn't make it come back, my mind went straight to this
You see it as him showing some humility, but I just see Copperfield once again making it all about him.
@@SlyMaelstrom ~ yeah. Could be. But it prolly was mocking him
He was a bit… flamboyant? Doug Henning was wise but if memory serves, Copperfield was overly dramatic
He was good, sure! Ground breaking but not overly modest
Still, when you’re so good you actually change your profession, that’s gotta have some effect on you
@@SlyMaelstrom It was literally and unmistakably about him
Loved him in the 80s - DC still looks good after all this time. Didn’t realise he’s such a laid back and humble guy. The years have been good to him. He also looks genuinely happy and content with his life.
Saw him in Vegas in 2007... makeup and video editing are the real magic here
80,90,2000
@@Austinn026 Ummm, he has had a residency (almost daily shows) in Las Vegas since 1996, taking just a few months off a year.
@@Austinn026 He does two or three shows a day 42 weeks out of the year in Vegas. He's worth a billion dollars - the richest illusionist alive, right now. And he just published a book. I'd say he's doing plenty.
@@Austinn026 oh dear god get off UA-cam
One thing I really admire about him is after you see his shows, he spends time shaking every hand as you exit his show, and signs autographs as well.
Considering who he is and how much time he’s had in the business, that’s actually remarkable.
Asking a person for an autograph is cuckery
Most of all, this tells us a lot about David Copperfield‘s way of thinking. And why he is the great magician he is.
Saw this dude live once, maybe 18 or 19 years ago? Man he's talented. His dialogue with the audience, how he creates a story, is fantastic. It's all about stories. Magic without a personal connection is almost meaningless. He did a fantastic job, connecting with the audience.
Imagine trying to rob David Copperfield and actually believe that his pockets are empty
Hahahaha 😂
Most humans don't recognize him fortunately
@@vb8428 I don't think you realize how famous he used to be in the 80s, everyone new him, he was a household name and face.
@@wingerding Never said he wasn't
@@wingerding for what it's worth, I (born in 1990) would probably recognize his 80s/90s face on the street if I saw it today, but not him now, lol
His thick hoodie made him look like a friar, which kinda adds more to his mystical aura. Jokes aside, David Copperfield is such a legend.
sounds like DC is the consultant on EVERY feature film about magic. sweet gig!
He was even a consultant for Michael Jackson's concerts.
Went to a show of his about 20 years ago... it's pretty wild. He's obviously a very genuine and humble person who truly loves what he does. He is unbelievably good at it. I also love that he didn't milk his celebrity. He just walked off stage. Manages his magic stuff, museum, teaches, consults, etc.
I honestly didn’t know that David Copperfield was an actual person.
Fr, I thought he was some legend that died like 200years ago lmao
ME TOO
Wha wha whaaaat? I've seen him live over 40 times. Magic's GOAT.
David Copperfield is the eponymous character in a Charles Dickens novel published in 1849.
What if I said that he’s not an actual person
*ominous piano sounds
I saw him at the MGM in Vegas a few months back and we did a meet and greet with him backstage, and he performed a card trick for us. That was easily the highlight of my Vegas trip. You have to put it into perspective. Here is a guy who was THE magician in the 80's and 90's, I grew up watching his specials, the dude made the statue of liberty disappear on TV in front of millions world wide and he took the time out to perform a simple slight of hand backstage for a few people. What a class act.
Thanks for the story. Do you remember what kind of card trick he showed you?
I just booked this experince an hour ago!!! Super excited
David Copperfield is the real deal . No camera tricks .
I was on stage in the illusion "13" in Denmark 🇩🇰 and i preformed Magic shows since i was 12yo. 42 today 😃 His autograph still shines on my wall . ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
That Hawaii trick he mentions in the beginning? I was on stage when he performed that in my hometown. I was sixteen and haven't the slightest idea how he did it.
@@Daniel-xg3ul were You teleported to the beach in "Hawaii " ?

He has a twin brother. Sorry to ruin the illusion.
Not gonna lie I thought this was one of those legends that died a long time ago and people spoke highly of him. Didn’t know he was still alive and kickin!
Didn't even realize he was simply wearing a black hoodie. Made him look like a Jesuit priest in training or something.
LMAO
David Copperfield chillingly saying every mind-blowing tricks in movies are doable. And he looks very serious about it. Mad respect for legend...
He is an extremely hard worker. He does shows non stop: 3 shows a day, 7 days a week for around 42 weeks a year for 13 years. Love this guy.
Where is he right now?
@@wingerding With your mom
David copperfield is a legend, who should be in movies, or a biopic about himself. He's my idol.
I love that they had Arrested Development. And even more that he saw the obvious parody and even says "I'm probably to blame for this" 🤣🤣🤣
As they say, parody is the most sincere form of flattery
Absolutely loved the bit when David Copperfield didnt talk about David Copperfield
Saw him when I was a kid. Must have been late 70’s. Dude flew OVER OUR HEADS just feet away. There wasn’t anything that could be seen in the ceiling of the theater. Then, because you know that wasn’t enough, he swooped down and picked up a audience member and flew them around the room. Dude IS Magic period
@Nick West hey people come here! The clown has come!🎉🎉
David Copperfield debuted his Flying illusion in 1992. I’ve also seen it in person.
@LIGHTWORSHIP will we ever know how he did that???
Wires
@Nick West 🤯
This is a man that discovered EXACTLY what he was meant to do, an immaculate amalgamation of chance, synchronicity, and fate, hence feeling as if he’s never worked a day in his life. He’s confident, yet self-deprecating, serious, but perceives the underlying humor in situations. A very entertaining piece, certainly exceeding my expectations. Thanks for posting.
I love how he says that everything is possible.
"If this could be done, could it be done? Yes it could.“ Thanks for your insight DC!
his imagination knows no bounds
As a child I grew up watching David Copperfield’s magic on TV. I remember wanting to be a magician and have cool hair. 4 decades later, I don’t know any magic tricks and don’t have cool hair like him. That’s quite alright. 😂 Watching this video brought back so many beautiful childhood memories. Thank you for bringing joy and wonder to so many of us.
Next up : "Billionaire eilte breaks down squid game"
always a bufoon in the comments
That’d be interesting. Maybe people would learn why squid game, while a good show, has a very nonsensical political message lol.
@@zeroomens9438 you're comment seems to be sufficient evidence of your statement
@@SomberSF The working class being drawn to increasingly desperate measures largely as a result of steadily increasing wealth gaps is not really a nonsensical political message. Especially in South Korea which is one of the most overworked countries in the world.

And yeah...we really do, do that
So, its a real professional touch"
Went to a live David Copperfield show a couple years ago, it was genuinely one of the best things I've ever experienced.
David Copperfield's Metamorphosis is still one of the best illusions I've ever seen. Simply, the best.
Oh, I wasn't sure that David could go older. Since my childhood, He looks like ghostly, immortal, eternal, a magic smile in the shape of a man...
Thanks, David. To all the happiness and enchantment you give to everyone, along all these years
I love David Copperfield, he is so humble and regal. when I was a little girl in the 80-90´s He was IT!!!!
All of his tv specials and magic series make us feel conected, like it was real.
it was a time of innocence and pure magic and heart. really lovely times
Wasn't he though?!
In those time yes
@david ludwig what a tresure you have♡ and like you said, he makes you believe it's real
David was the person that left me wonder as a kid if magic is true or not , i kinda miss person of his magnitute , someone representing magic and doing all the huge shows with new tricks
Watching him as a kid it was always mesmerising. What a great guy
Love seeing Copperfield give Andrei Jikh his credit for the card sequence!!
What I'm most amazed at even to this day is David's act when he literally flew on stage like Superman. I wonder if anyone has ever solved how he did that.
yes they have, but he claims they developed 3 or 4 different methods for it, so if one method would get busted, he would've just switched to another one. So that's what he claims, but for some reason he really has stopped doing that act a long time ago.
Cross Angel did it better
@@MattPryze

@@MattPryze nope
@@MattPryze Angel is all TV edits. You can barely call him a real illusionist/magician.
The Illusionist! Underrated film. I saw David Copperfield live back in the late 80s and he was fantastic
I saw him in Vegas and celebrated the new year with him a few years back. I was in the front row and he did the trick where he vanishes over the audience. It was surreal. Shouldn’t have been possible. To this day, after learning how so many tricks are done, I still have no idea how he pulled it off.
Sweet
Imagine being so big in your field, that every movie referencing it you say "I/someone that works with me inspired that". The only two movies he doesn't say this, are the Chinese one, which I would assume for obvious reasons, and Houdini, for even more obvious reasons.
This guy is a rockstar. He did as much for making magic mainstream as Houdini. 👏🏻
DC's greatest illusion to date was clearly tricking time into passing slower for him than for all of us. He's 65!
Copperfield is the first magician on this kind of video that positivelly reviews the Now You See Me franchise
Seems like everything is either "yes, and here's how it's done" or "it's possible". The mind of a magician: nothing is impossible, ever, you just have to figure out how to do it 😁
*How to fool the audience into believing it
That should basically be the mindset of just about everyone on the planet.
He was my first introduction to magic when I was little. Saw him in TV when magic was big.
one of the best illusions is david copperfield actually not disclosing any trick throughout the entire video
he did though
His voice is so incredibly soothing.
Any movie ever..
David copperfield: “now this scene is based on a trick of mine”
I'm sure David won't see this BUT - "sit down, relax, and shut that kid up!" I was there, 9 years old, in Costa Mesa.
I remember watching him when I was just a little kid back in the early 80's I was all of 5 years old when he disappeared the plane. 40 years later and he's still working. Sure, he stopped doing TV specials, but he didn't stop captivating and entertaining. Fortunately I got to finally see him in person thanks to a friend of mine convincing me to see him at the MGM back in 2014. It was still classic Copperfield, and all in all, it was an enjoyable show.
I've seen David's Vegas show several times and it's incredible! I've also seen Lance Burton's and Criss Angel's, but there's something about David's show that stands above the rest. He's a legend!
I really love that after all these years the man still looks like a kid in a candy store when it comes to the artistry behind magic.
I never realized until now that David Copperfield looks, sounds, has the mannerisms that make him seem like he's Al Pacino's son. If I ran into them at a bar mitzvah and they were hanging out, talking, I would assume they're father and son.

Most famous magician in history: im gonna wear a baggy hoodie for this interview.
Watching David and Blaine in East Africa convinced me to become a magician, real legends 🙏
Never knew copperfield was such a cool guy. Could watch him break down magic for days..
Amateur magicians have made this same review like - "it's not possible"
DC... literally the best magician in the world and the leading authority - "It's possible"
I was thinking the exact same thing.
He's the best illusionist in the world. I would give best overall magician in the world to David Blaine though.
@@DeathBringer769 that is true... although I have to consider DC a wizard myself... he manages to have like 550 live performances a year and still has time to do other things...
But yeah, illusionist is what he truly is. And he is the best
@@DeathBringer769 I don’t think I’d call David Blaine the best magician. He’s certainly the best at what he does, but what he does now is more pushing the bounds of humanity. There’s very few “tricks”, just things he actually does that shouldn’t be possible
@@DeathBringer769 Copperfield was named "Magician of the Century" and "King of Magic" by The Society of American Magicians, holds 11 Guinness World Records, won 21 out of 38 Emmy Award nominations, officially recognized as a living legend by the Library of Congress, first living magician to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, awarded by the French government w/ the Chevalier of Arts and Letters, etc... He's the go-to guy for other high profile artists such as Michael Jackson and Christopher Nolan when it comes to dealing w/ magic.
The light box/heavy box trick is quite interesting. It used electromagnetism, which makes perfect sense, but what's interesting is that electromagnetism, in and of itself, is one of the closest things to "true magic" we know of. We understand it at a quantum level. We can generate it, manipulate it, and do all sorts of incredible things with it (like this trick,) but we have no idea why it exists. All we know is that a moving electric field creates a magnetic field, and a moving magnetic field creates an electric field. We are very good at using that knowledge but the phenomenon remains a mystery. Perhaps that's not exactly "true magic," more like our lack of understanding, but it sure is amazing when you think about it.
To my knowledge true magic is the lack of understanding on behalf of the audience. If everything was understood, would it be magic? Defeats your point.
@@Sertifi Semantics, but okay.
It's a fundamental force of the universe, just like Gravity. So yeah, we don't have a "why" for it. Every game of "why" that you can play with kids always comes down to "there are particles, and there are forces, and that's all we can tell you at this point."
OMG! DAVID COPPERFIELD!!!!! I grew up watching a dvd my grandparents that was a compilation of his illusions. HE'S MY CHILDHOOD
I was fortunate to see his vanish and reappear in Hawaii illusion in person. This was at a time when I had been studying magic for about 5 years. I was, and still am, mind-blown to this day! Any time magic comes up in conversation, I mention it. Very cool!!!
David Copperfield aged like a fine wine.
My dad, my brother and I saw him for the first time in Las Vegas last week. A truly fantastic man and his show.
Wow! He really seems like the most likable mythical person there was/is. I would love to sit down and chat and have beer with him. An absolute legend. Love it

"Pretty risky pointing a gun at a mustache Dude" 😂😂
this mans story, starting as an orphaned child in the early 1800s England to become a great magician in the current era, is a truly inspiring life story.
This is the first time I ever seen this man talk, I live in Vegas and I see his sign as long as I can remember lol
I remember watching David Copperfield's specials on TV back in the day. Even had a few recorded on VHS...the Orient Express, the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, there were probably others. The Orient Express was my absolute favorite.
David Copperfield is a real life wizard. The man is truly a legend.
I saw him live in Brisbane ages ago - one where he vanished off stage and appeared around 10m to my right, the other where he flew around the stage both blew my mind.
Man I saw david copperfield do that first illusion he explained live when I was a kid. It blew everyone's mind.
I love that he credited not only Christopher Nolan for The Prestige, but also his brother Jonathan, who co-wrote the adaptation (of a novel). I haven't checked but I would suspect he may have been a consultant for the movie, otherwise I would be even more impressed that he was so aware that both Nolans worked on it. I love David, he was THE magician of the late 90s when I was a kid.
The Prestige and The Illusionist are one of those pair/sibling movies.
I had to look it up and they officially refer to them as "Twin Films"
What I like about this video is watching David Copperfield being not only an expert but also a people really interested in the magic shown in the movies.
I mean, It is evident that he knows the movies and he has seen them previously.
He made that very interesting. A great storyteller.
David Copperfield is one of, if not, the greatest magicians. I love that he was in this video!
0:53 Around 10 years ago when I saw him do a live show in my hometown I actually saw him do this illusion at the show. It was very impressive!
bruh, I could listen to him talk all day, such a chill voice
65 years old and you would never know it must be magic lol
Hair dye is pretty amazing
I love that he doesn’t Dismiss them as like “this is totally fiction and impossible” but explains how it can be done and does point out because it’s a movie they do buff it up abit and make it better for the movie goer…like I saw the real orange tree illusion in a video and it’s close to the illusionist movie so it’s grounded in reality but takes it to the next step making it awe inspiring
I always wanted to be a magician when I was young. When other kids were buying video games and action figures I wanted Magic Sets. I had a bunch, was never any good at it, lost interest in practicing. Now I am far more interested in art and illustration. Then again... here I am watching David Copperfield break down magic scenes on GQ so maybe a little interested in it still. 😉 Thank you GQ and David, for reconnecting me with that long-forgotten aspect of my childhood.
