It’s great to have Coral back again. Prisoner is one of a couple of show I can go back & watch again & again & I enjoy it the same as the first time I watched it. The other show I can rewatch over & over is Only Fools & Horses. I’m from Ireland but I’m a big fan of Aussie shows from Prisoner to Home & Away, Neighbours, A Country Practice, The Flying Doctors, Round The Twist & Wentworth. It’s fascinating to hear stories of how these iconic shows were made. Amazing episode & screw the haters.
I love listening to Coral. She's such a breath of fresh air. Honest, frank, and totally entertaining, her contributions to Talking Prisoner are full of fabulous anecdotes and behind the scenes drama! I liked Nora Flyn and Coral really underpinned what I thought at the time, that the character never reached its full purpose or potential in the series.
I would've liked to have seen Nora turn back into a tough, hard, Prisoner matriarch after the seige - but a much more calculated Top Dog, strategic, less passive and more intelligent than Bea and Myra. I think Pamela Rabe from Wentworth would have played a good Nora, and would've delivered the uneasy nuances that the character desperately needed on-screen with style. Nora reminded me a little bit of a reviled British female killer called Myra Hindley. The backstory and coldness of character are similar.
These eps just get better and better! Welcome back Coral, absolutely love your ‘no nonsense, I’m going to say it how it is’ attitude! Don’t ever change 😀 Could listen to you all day! Fascinating, can’t wait for the next one. Very sorry to hear your sad news… Wrap yourself up in all your happy memories 🤗 Keep strong 🥰
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this, thank you. Prisoner is my favourite show ever and to listen to Coral tell us all about her stories and character creations is an absolute joy. I can think of loads of questions I'd like to ask about certain storylines and characters. Hope we get another opportunity to ask more.
Welcome back Coral good to see you again. I've always enjoyed watching these soapbox episodes Coral remembers so much it's good to hear, she also has a great sense of humour.
Gosh I love these podcasts. Thank you Coral and Matt for taking the time to chat again! I remember on the original (UK) run, my brother and I sat watching the flashbacks episode. We enjoyed it immensely, especially as we hadn't watched the early episodes at that point. I can remember my brother saying 'OMG Bea's coming back, they're refreshing our memories for it'. With regards to the Barnhurst 5, I think it was a shock to the system for most people because it was such a big influx of new characters all at once, which rarely works. Mal Young has done it on every soap he's worked on and never learned his lesson. Personally I enjoy the Barnhurst 5 more with each re-watch. All 5 characters are very good but I think when there is a massive change to a show people are just inclined to not like it. Re-watching and already having knowledge of the characters has made me more welcoming of them and I appreciate each individual character more than I did on the original run. So interesting to hear your original plan for those characters. So I've converted from someone not keen on the Barnhurst 5 (never hated them) to someone who loves them! Thanks again Coral, not just for the podcasts but for the work you did on a show that I have enjoyed for the past 4 decades.
You are right about the big influx of new characters, Normally it was one or two, but then the Blackmoor period was the same with an introduction of many characters.
Thanks for another great Soapbox, so happy when I saw an update on facebook that there were another 2 to watch with Coral! I actually liked the Barnhurst 5, I thought it worked well in that they came as a little ready made community, it just seemed to fall apart later on, perhaps after Coral left and the people got involves with the direction of them. Nora had the presence of a top dog, I always thought she was quite mysterious and there was more of her to come but she was suddenly written out. The flashbacks worked well leading up to the announcement of Bea's death, the episode may have been a bit flat otherwise, though I do remember shouting "Nooooo!" at the screen when I first viewed it!
Great interview.thoroughly enjoyed it.see you next time and take care and look after yourself coral.your a special lady with such a great memory of my beloved show.many condolences on your husband.xxx
The concept of May and Willie being lovers makes perfect sense. That would have brought a whole new dimension into the characters relationship. May would have clearly only tolerated Willie if they were long term partners, I cant believe the suits missed this perfect idea.
Lovely interview, thank you! I had always assumed Willy and May were a couple, just that it was never implicitly stated. They were very tactile with each other and fearsomely defensive of each other if anyone threatened them. Willy's reaction to May's fate was really well played, and for the first time I felt we saw the 'real' Willy, that all the flouncing and shrieking were just extravagant theatrics to mask her real intelligence and guile; with that in mind, her return cameo later on made absolute sense, more than it would if it was Chrissie. Although Nora didn't really work out, I do think the Barnhurst 5 'era' is often highly underrated. I loved it! Cheers.
I wonder whether May's arm in a sling was a response to her ill health... Corol's way to invent a reason, to demote her position away from the tough action.
I love the barnhurt 5. They were the first episodes I ever saw airing in the uk and they had me hooked. To me they feel like classic prisoner. I was about 14 and would stay up secretly until midnight and watch prisoner on a cassette player that also had a 6 inch tv screen on it. Willie is my favourite, i find her hilarious.
On the subject of Within These Walls, what made Prisoner better in my opinion, among many other reasons, is the fact that it was serialised rather than episodic.
Thank you so much Matt for passing on my message to the brilliant Coral. Another truly enjoyable and insightful episode - I had no idea May and Willie were intended to be a lesbian couple, but it would've been a terrific dynamic to see on screen. Looking forward to future Soap Box episodes and TP interviews. I was very sorry hear about Coral's husband - sending warm wishes and condolences to a very talented lady. It'll be interesting to hear her thoughts on Baby Reindeer. Many thanks again
That's actually really interesting to know about that contract situation there for that episode. Oh and that final question.. I reckon it's Home and Away and Ailsa's death, it stuck with me for ages and because it felt like it came out of nowhere, even though reading a few weeks back that Judy wasn't happy with how the exit happened, it truly was the end of an era.
This is just absolutely fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. I'd love to know if Coral had any plans for Colleen Powell at all that didn't make the series and if any approaches were made to bring back Sandy Edwards or Sonia Stevens. Thank you Matt from Glasgow, UK.
@@TalkingPrisoner I have to admit I was a little in love with Sandy, perhaps I still am! I loved watching Louise Le Nay at your last event. She has aged beautifully. My dream dinner would be with her, Ian Smith and Coral, i would just sit and take everything they would say in. Oh I had plans for Collen to be Governor after Gerda. And we would have loved to bring back Sandy and/or Sonia...but the scheduling just didn't work out.
So great to see Coral back and a really interesting discussion about who else could have played May. Funnily enough, that came up in conversation the other day and a suggestion that Bunney Brooke would have been good alternative choice. I’d have loved to see Lorraine Bayley in Prisoner in a tough inmate role - that would have been great for her to flex her acting muscles away from Grace Sullivan and she proved she could play tough as Jennifer Carson. I always hate that “anybody who is anybody was in Prisoner” expression often used, when so many brilliant performers didn’t - Lorraine Bayly, Pat McDonald, Bunney Brooke, Sheila Kennelly, Lorrae Desmond - the list is endless ❤
Fantastic episode! Can't wait for the next. I wasn't a huge fan of the Barnhurst 5 except Julie. Though it did get a little better towards the end with their leaving stories.
14:10 - hahaha, a great Coral moment there! 😄👍 (Have to admit, I wasn’t a fan of the Barnhurst intake, but hats off to Coral and the writers for trying to keep the show fresh. )
Don't know if you read this Coral? Thank you to yourself & Matt for doing this podcast. Really enjoyed the 'Barnhurst 5'. Also Willie Beecham got a "Full Pardon"! Would this not give her a clean slate to set up a Security firm? The main reason I liked this era was because the woonderful Lou Kelly came into her own. There were no decent new prisoner characters after Rita Connors. IMHO. The last 60-80 episodes I watched but barely remember. It got too repetitive & Maxwell & 'The Freak' getting away with everything just got boring & annoying. After hundreds of wonderful episodes, the latter part of Season 8 just make me sad. Thank goodness for the ending. Thank you for your work on the show.
Thanks for this, another great episode! One topic that I would love to hear something about is Meg Jackson/Morris - I find it interesting that the one central character present throughout the run is rarely mentioned, and I wondered if this was because she was a difficult character to write for. Did any plans for her not make it to the screen? Was Dennis Cruickshank's engagement always intended to be short-lived? Did writers ever have any desires to axe her from the show? I would love to hear Coral's thoughts.
Not me she’s boring as hell. It’s Meg who most people want to see. I guess Med is afraid to attend reunions because Bea might show up and they hate each other’s guts.
Coral is brilliant, sharp as a tack. My first time of seeing the Barnhurst 5 was when I bought the On The Inside single in 1989 when PCBH blew up in the U.K. They wouldn’t appear on screen here for another 6-12 months but the back of the sleeve for that single was a group photo in the laundry with Nora on the steam press. The one thing I hated about the flashback episode was Lou and Lurch doing all the talking. They weren’t on the show yet. They should have gave Lorna and Tina the chance to speak about past characters since they were there from the beginning. Instead of the boring Barnhurst 5 they should have made Lorna,Tina,Ronnie, and Jacko main characters like they did wit Hazel, Mouse, and Phyllis all whom started out as background characters themselves.
Throw in Jenny Hartley (a lousy actress and her dragging storyline) and Lexie(nepotism hire) along with The Barnhurst 5 made season 7 the worst season in the history of Prisoner.
Matt going off topic as usual. That may explain why many actors don’t want to do interviews with him. Tons of Prisoner actors have done interviews with Officers and Inmates magazine.
What a nasty character you are. He has interviewed the best! What have you ever achieved? How have you ever served the Prisoner fandom? You are a nobody and a very sad, nasty person.

I also find it terribly funny that both Matt and the person who run the magazine share each others posts on the pages they run clearly they are friends and it's NOT a competition. A lot of cast members moved on from the show and probably moved countries and stopped acting. Grow up bro you're petty as hell.
