  • For this tutorial I am using 3 lights set up to balance ambient and flash on a beach shoot. I use Magmod modifiers to cut the specular reflections on the skin .
    Gear I used:
    AD 200, expose lamp head with Magmod XL reflector and diffuser
    AD 200 round head with small Magmod diffuser
    AD 300 bare flash
    Canon R5
    Canon 24-105 mm F4

    Great video! Love your model - she's so gracious. One thing I'd be interested in knowing what ratios were your lights or what power settings for each. Looking forward to more of your vids.

      Thank you! I have all the lights at 1/2 power, also the lights are different distances from my model and you get slight difference on intensity and make the image come together without double shadows. I would have used different ratios if the edge lights were more far back or when use the lights with bigger modifiers.
      I am not using pro young models because after years of shooting catalogs for models agencies in Miami they were never money makers for me and a pretty young girl will look great in pictures even with bad lighting. When i start doing corporate portraits which pay significantly more i realized the importance of understanding lighting and learning to photograph regular people was more rewarding . Stay tuned because i have more good stuff coming up. Feel free to ask me any questions !

      Thank you! You will love your R5C for sure . You can put the AD200 on slave mode so the optical trigger is active and trigger it with the canon flash. Have a great day !

    Awesome images…just curious what was the power and ratio on the 3 lights assuming you went manual or were you on TTL or some combo of both?

    • @tonyroscaphotography
      @tonyroscaphotography  10 місяців тому

      Thank you! I kept all the flashes at 1/2 power on manual. Because of the diferent distance from the subject i had slight different illumination the subject . TTL doesnt work that good on backlight situation but i use ttl to test exposure and adjust in manual after that. You have to dial in each light individually to see how much light they project on your subject and how much of your subject is getting hit by the light and how much it overlaps with the other lights. I will turn on and off each one of them and leave the other 2 on to see how much each light contributes to the 2 light set up. But when you are dialed in i keep the lights on manual and outdoors i will play with the shutter speed ti get the best ambient exposure. My strobes are locked with the aperture settings . Let me know if you have any questions ! Have a great day!

      Thanks for the detailed clarification. Always helps to get in to the mind of a pro and how you go about your settings etc. Just a final follow on question - do you meter your lights using a light meter to ensure aperture match or do you just go with the look on the monitor, And what camera metering mode are u on - matrix? Also what about white balance and auto focus? Are you using face tracking to lock on to the eyes as you or your subject moves around a bit

    • @tonyroscaphotography
      @tonyroscaphotography  10 місяців тому +1

      I am using a light meter most of the time but watching the histogram on your camera works too, for this pictures I used the camera screen and the histogram. White balance I do with a reference gray card from WhiBal which also I used to take a reading for the ambient exposure. I am dialing the flashes on manual on small increments with the flash meter I aim for flashes to be around 30% of the total exposure which translates to 1/2 stop added by flash to ambient exposure to make the shot look more natural. you need to aim to open up the shadows on the face with the flash to match the brighter parts. I use face priority but matrix will be ok for metering , I like eye tracking but I don't always use continuous focusing or AI servo . I like the one shot because you lock focus whit your focus point selected at the moment you press the shutter. The more manual adjustments you do the more you are in control of your equipment. It will take some time and practice to learn but after that will be easier to how to make adjustments on the fly without even thinking, and when something goes wrong will be easier to pinpoint what needs to be adjusted . What you like to photograph? Let me know and if I can help with some advice I will gladly do it.

      Thanks tony…..your point by point response is invaluable for beginners like myself. There is so much behind the shot and details in the set up which may be difficult to cover completely in a video. And I really appreciate the fact that you have actually taken time to respond…..my personal experience on posting comments on hundreds of UA-cam video tutorials is that rarely does one get such a timely and detailed response that actually addresses the query. Would be great if at some point you can do an in-depth start to finish video walkthrough on using flash in a studio set up where one can eliminate ambient and an outdoor one involving balancing ambient with flash, including overpowering the sun during mid day kind of situations with High speed sync or may be ND filters if one wants to stay within sync speed ( curious if you have a preference for either). I am really keen to improve my skills on artificial lighting as I feel it just gives more control and options to manoeuver especially when the ambient or natural light isn’t great or favourable. And even if the natural light is good I feel it still helps add that bit of extra pop to a portrait. But I keep getting bogged down by the technicalities during any shoot and it takes me ages to dial in the lights. It distracts me from focussing on things like composition or engaging with the subject as I am not very confident about getting the right exposure in time. I don’t have a proper workflow or system and still get a bit intimidated by flash especially in tricky outdoor situations involving balancing.

      Thank you ! I will always answer sooner or later depending when i can catch a break .
      I will try to incorporate something about using flash for interior shots in my next vid because i am working on something which can benefit ti have interior set up explanation.
      I started this channel to try to help fellow photographers and make friends , this is not a business oriented channel . I made my money and carrier already , this is my pet project
      What camera and flash you use ? I will point out few steps yo follow and will get you through.
      Best regards
