Flashpoint/Godox 600W Special Edition Its a Lemon
The Flashpoint/Godox Special Edition 600 W strobe looked good on paper but its the biggest lemon of 2024. Good package and nice LCD color screen but falls flat on delivery. Facts checked not simple words for hype. Check out the video and you will see why!

Magmod XL Review and Photoshoot with Godox Ad 200
Dear Tony, i am very curious about your measurement results. Could you publish them here - AD-S2 vs. Magmod... 🙏🙏
what size was that Angler softbox?
Its a 24” softbox and holds your flash pretty secured when attached.
so this is a bit of atangent as I was experimenting with things I was again really impressed at the AD200pro and the light you can get out of that AD-S2 little cheap reflector you can get that mates with the bare bulb. I was confinced there was no way to get more power out of that light than that modifier. I was wrong, the Glow EZ-lock 28" parabolic soft box pulled 1/3 stop more light from that little light. Very impressive. Anyone have the next sizes up (they have a 38" and 48") to see if that pulls anymore power out of the AD200pro? I used the reflector plate but no diffusion. More on topic, again I will say that the AD600pro power is lost until you get to larger modifiers, then it performs at least 1.5 stops over the AD200pro in every modifier I put it in, just not with standard smaller reflectors and especially the stock AD600pro reflector, that thing is more of a protective cap than a reflector. Bare bulb it also outperforms the AD200pro by 1.5 stops as you'd expect. That is where our results differ and I wonder why..
Nicely said , 600 SE it s not showing on Godox site and its the first flash they didnt launched simultaneously. Also i see its 1lb heavier thand the older 600w which are consistent with you findings in power output or hard to believe I got 2 bad new ones . I like Godox/Flashpoint flashes and I am long time user but something doesnt add up with this model
@@tonyroscaphotography Yeah I have not tried the special yet and I do wonder what is different than the older AD600 models and since it looks nearly idendical to the AD600pro I'm wondering how it differs from that model too. Your testing does not bode well on the special so I'm gonna steer clear for now. I think perhaps that Adorama made a deal with Godox to get exclusive access to this model for a while or permanently or something like that. On a different note I have found that some reflectors and modifiers perform very differently from a pure power level perspective. I stuck an AD100pro into a S2 bracket and put on a RFT-19 reflector and got huge power out of it. Insanely it was more power than the AD200pro with bare bulb put out in the same reflector, and more than the AD600pro with the RFT-19 reflector. It must be bulb shape, depth or something. I tried a speedlight with a rectangle fresnel head and again huge power 70w light put out more than the AD600pro in that refletor it was hard to believe. The AD200pro with the fresnel head in that RFT-19 reflector was also hugely powerful. That RFT-19 loves fresnel heads... What did I learn? Well, test your lights with different modifiers if you are wanting the most power out of your lights you can get. Who knew I could take an AD100pro to a shoot I'm using only simple reflectors on and get more out of it than the AD600pro. Note 1: I have not tested what the light patter n looks like at all out of these configurations. Note 2: When you stick any of these in a large modifier the power level of the light used really matters a lot and it tracks with the stated power on each strobe at that point. In large modifiers bare bulb lights perform way better than the fresnel head lights or speedlights.
Very interesting findings! I tend to use more reflectors and small modifiers and your info it is very good . Flashpoint was an Adorama brand different from Godox, i still have some 500w and 1000w strobes somewhere in storage . Maybe 15-20 years ago was when i bought them . Back then 1000w was the norm for me but now a speed light its more interesting . I will play with different reflectors for sure now after your info. I am using book lighting and diffusion panels a lot lately and being able to use small flashes will be great to get rid of the weight. I really like and respect people like you who try to understand lighting and modifiers . You meed to share more of your testing ! Best regards!
@@tonyroscaphotography Okay this is gonna be hard to believe but I did a side by side with 2 AD200pro strobes. setup 1 was bare bulb with the AD-S2 reflector which we know is pretty awesome. The 2nd setup was using the AD200pro with Fresnel head in the RFT-19 reflector and at 6ft it was 1 1/3 stops more powerful than the AD-S2 reflector with bare bulb. At 6ft I read 1/200th ISO 64 F/28.... The AD100 in the same RFT-19 reflector read F/20 so slightly more power than the bare bulb AD200pro with the AD-S2 reflector... just nuts what that RFT-19 reflector can do with a fresnel head, thats the key... Still need to have a look at the light pattern and take some sample shots to see how they turn out.
Wow, you have no ideea how much you help me with this info. I need to order asap a fresnel head because that kind of output will be perfect for a project I am doing and I want ti use book lighting and want to bounce the light off unbleached muslin for a warm look and need a really light set up. Man you make my day! I got distracted by the weird patterns you get with the fresnel head and didnt think when you bounce the light you get rid of patterns . I can use a video fresnel but adds weight to my set up which is already heavy because of all the c stands i have to take with me . Awesome !
Profoto is the LIGHT, godox, only knows how to copy🤣😂
Lol ! Metz is the first company to start manufacturing flashes , everybody else copy from them !😂
@@tonyroscaphotography of course🤣😂🤣😂
Something is not setup correctly, I have 2 of the pro 600s, 2 of the original 600s, 2 of the 400s, 300s & 200s and the 600s have the most output. I also measure with a flash meter, the Minolta flash meter VI.
The original 600s have the most output indeed . I did not kept the 600 pros because had more than a stop less power than the 600s . Dont forget between 200w and true 600w is only 1.5 stop difference . If you watch the video you saw i used 2 different Sekonic meters to double check the readings , both meters in the same time .
AD600 pro is one stop brighter than my AD300 pro when using the standard 7 inches reflector, deep umbrella 85cm, both measured by sekonic and from 200 cm away, same hight, same spot and myself standing behind the flash while taking the measurement
That should be the right power difference . Do you have ad200s?
Please, create a tutorial video how to get Hard,Soft,Spectacular ,and Diffuse Light . thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you ! I will! I started working on one a while ago , need to get back to it and finish it ! You the man!
Clearly you must have done something wrong!! I have 5 AD200, 5 AD600Pro, one AD1200. The AD600 is significantly more powerful than the 200 and recycles twice as fast. Differences in reflectors can greatly skew the results but I would not be surprised that you made some other fatal error such as set it to 1/4 power. Or perhaps you have a one in ten thousand faulty unit?
The difference between 200 W and 600 W is just 1.5 stops . The older 600W models hold true that difference . The newer 600 models have 1 stop less power at least few flashes I tested . The reflector each flash came with has to be the best fit and at least should be 1 stop difference . The 600 will recycle faster for sure but there is not too much difference in power output compare with a 200 .its just the perception because are bigger, heavier and more expensive . For me are useful when i have to shoot extended periods of time .
Agree with the previous comment. you should compare with the same reflector or mondifier. The stock reflector / protective cap on the AD600pro and that special are notoriously bad. My only gripe about the newer line. Also, the reflector you have on the ad200 bare bulb is well known to be it's most powerful configuration, matching even the stock fresnel head in power, impressive little strobe.
It should be clear 1.5 stops more powerful. I tried barebulb first and was same ratio. I will try with a 7” reflector on both and let you know later today. The ad200 its really badass !😂
@@tonyroscaphotography I just ran the same bare bulb test with my AD200pro -vs- my AD600pro and at 1/200th and ISO100 I at about 6ft I got 6.3 on the AD200pro and 12.7 on the AD600pro this is more than 1.5stops. Perhaps you got a faulty sample or the special model is not comparable to the AD600pro... I ran the same test through a shoot through umbrella and the AD600pro was a full 2 stops more powerful than my AD200pro... As somone else mentioned as well the AD600pro recycle time at 1/1 was far faster than the AD200pro too... I will admint with small reflectors I don't see a big difference in power output but when you feed the larger light larger modifiers it far outperforms the 200watt superlights... It also proves to me that the optimized little reflector on the bare bulb ad200pro is amazing and so is the fresnel head albiet a bit blue.
@maarekstele2815 i think at 6’ with ad200 bare bulb my readings are 8.9 to 11.2 across all my units . You are right the little reflector its badass and the recycling time of the 600 is faster if need it.
@maarekstele2815 i always had a problem with the light pattern of the fresnel head , i throw away all the heads i had because every single one had a significant spotty pattern . How is your experience with the fresnel ?
@@tonyroscaphotography light pattern isn’t too much fun but thing is in most work that isn’t really seen much. If I’m running tests on patters on the wall or ding real estate work it would bug me.
Try both 600’s and the 200 with the same modifier and measure again 🙌
I measured with the bare bulbs first and was same ratio. I put the reflectors to not blind the video camera while recording. Regardless the new 600 has a stop less power than the old one. The power output should be 1,5 stops stronger than the 200w one .
Iv been a Photographer for over 50 years . and im im still using 4 #Einstein 640. / Nikon Sb800 for over. 20 / 2 of them . years and still have them . . Old School im not depending $1200 for 1 Light . none Sense
I still have Einsteins too!✌️love them and still going strong ! I agree with you ! If its working don’t change it! Respect!
Super useful and love the examples. Have you made a video yet which shows (in detail) how to use a Sekonik to balance the flash component of the overall exposure to the target 20% - 40% range? Thanks and keep teaching.
Thank you! I have not done a video about metering yet, i plan it few times but didnt had the chance to work on it . It will happen soon. ✌️
Good balanced review, thanks for the examples for comparison
Thank you!
which is better? Magsphere or Magbounce
Depends on what flash/ strobe you use . Being made by same manufacturer these are meant to compliment each other. With smaller flashes Magbounce its a better choice if you use only one flash . If you have multiple flashes/strobes the Magshere its better option because you have the option to control and restrict the light spread .
I think that what really change for a pro is the reliability. I use godox, but when you use for events, some times the light is too strong, some time too low, some times don't shot. I used the flash in a room with the trigger and I was so nervous for so much shot bad (I have the v860 ii) If you use it for some shot in studio, they are good, but if you need it for important event, I think we need more reliability., and profoto is much much better
Profoto is not much better. I use both systems and i never seen a difference . I have more problems with the Profoto Connect Pro triggers than with any other brand . You have to check clear channels on your triggers because some location can interfere with the connections between your flash and trigger. And that its happening with any flash brands
Good stuff 💪
Thank you!
Super helpful! I love the portability of this modifier... I wonder if a second magsphere or a reflector would help alleviate some of the issues when darkening the background.
For me a second light will better because you can move it further away from the subject if you want to include environment in the pic . With reflectors you have to stay pretty close .
Which modifiers would you recommend with the Zhiyun X60 RGB?
The ZHIYUN Mini Dome Softbox Diffuser, Video Light Dome Diffuser for G60 /X100 /X60 /CX100 Light with ZY Mount on Amazon is the one who fit the lights , its small but works pretty good fir different situation and shoot through umbrellas . I tried the Zhyiun to Bowers mount but it didn’t fit with the battery on , if you use the plug in and remove the battery will work and you can fit any Bowens modifier. The light can be plugged in via usb-c with or without battery and i use it wired if u have the chance
@@tonyroscaphotography Ok, I got the mini softbox. For umbrellas, what about a black/silver umbrella where you can adjust the distance to the umbrella to create different beams of light? Can you explain a bit about the Bowens mount not fitting with the battery? The battery is on the side, while the bowens mount is on the front, so it should work?
@@kennethcheong4498 the bowens mount is not for the 60 w and because the opening of the Bowens mount is wider than the light i think is the problem . Also the connector has the mount reset inside and you have to push the light flash with the disc to engage . I just tried again and i could not make it engaged to stay on . And the adaptor is made out of flimsy plastic . The bounce umbrella will work too if you want diffused light , i think you loose some power but pushing in or out will give you a mini para. I like to experiment with different lighting set ups because you can have nice surprises .
Ughhhhh , ughhhhhh , ughhhhh 😂
Its good or its bad? 🤣
Any ideas on how to get someone not wanting to be photographed as a model? ( Like you, I have a beautiful wife (in my eyes) but she is so shy in front of the camera)
You will need to start photographing her few times a week for a couple of months and the shyness will wear off. Dont make it serious so she doesnt get nervous . I started needing somebody to set up my lights , than experimenting with new set up for clients and checking equipment , i was not even downloading the pics from the cards most of the time because was testing only. Lidia was shy too and it took a while . Make it fun , compliment her and give her some time to get used being photographed , and do it over and over again . Start photographing her without posing so she can be relaxed . Have patience ! You can do it !
Did you test the recycle timing between the A2 vs Godox and how many flashes can happen before a thermal warning?
The recycle time its almost identical, i did not tested but i think I can get more flashes with Godox. Inam in a super hot climat in Florida and both flashes never gave me the thermal warning yet. I usually have low power settings on small flashes to recycle fast but even when i do rapid fire it never triggered the warning. I have these flashes for long time and i still cannot pick a really favorit. I just take the one close to me 🤣. I always have Godox , profoto and Elinchrom remote triggers in my bag because it all depends on what modifiers i have to use . My advise is to find modifiers you like and make the flash system around them. All the flashes are good these days and you can choose what you need or what you want , follow your heart and buy the one will make you happy because it will be good ! Cheers
Hey, what is the point of this? Isn't the Zoom for recording by itself?
The quality of the preamps from zoom combined with wireless mic from DJI. It gives you freedom of movement and good audio.
Thanks for the info. This is the fist video I've seen from someone who's not affiliated with Magmod or works directly at Magmod. Was looking for an unbiased opinion - thanks again.
Thank you!
👍
What zoom setting did you use for the bare AD100 shot? I get about + .7 stops going from 28mm (widest) to 85mm (max). So does the magnum give + 1.5 stops vs the AD100 at 85mm or vs the AD100 at 28mm?
It works on both ends of the zoom.
@@tonyroscaphotography So you’re saying it gives +1.5 stops regardless of what zoom setting you’re at? In the video you said it looses a few tenths of a stop if you zoom in all the way. Basically I want to know if you use the magnum reflector at whatever zoom gives you the max output, how much do you gain vs using the bare Ad100 at 85mm.
Sorry, you are right but the few tenths of a stop can be negligible , i have not use the magnum for few months because i use a fresnel from small rig , its bigger , heavier but it increases the power 10x , better focusing capabilities and better light output quality. Also the fresnel from Magmod will give you 3x power increase and also its heavier . But if you only need 1.5x more output the profoto will work great and few tenths of a stop will not make a difference unless you do critical exposure work and it comes with a grid which will help constrain the spread even better . Its a very convenient option because has magnetic attachment and its better option than the fresnel lens from profoto. How you are planing to use the reflector?
Nice work!
Thank you Markus, I really appreciate your comment. I am following you for few years and I am a big fan of yours! You just make my day!
Brilliant idea with the Fresnel ... I have to try it :D.
It works better than you might expect from a fresnel lens .
Thank you for sharing
Thank you!
👍
very nice video and Thank you ..please send me details and what accessories did you use it ? Thanks sharing your thoughts ..
I used the magmod XL, the magmod flash diffuser and 2 Godox AD200. I also had 2 S2 type brackets to mount the flashes on stands and to fit the Magmod XL on one of the flashes. For the flash with XL i used the exposed bulb head and for the other flash i use the round head to fit the magmod magnetic rubber grip to attach the diffuser. Its a compact set up and easy to carry with you. Let me know if you have more questions ! Happy shooting !
Thank you alot for this video, I'm planning to use fresnel lens with ttl speedlite and ad 200 for wedding hope to get focused and concentrated light which is softer than normal reflector... Your video is the first I found where no led is used with small ring fresnel🎉..
You will love the output of the combo! Also the spill around the focused beam its minimal and it looks very theatrical ! I like to experiment with different modifiers all the time , trying to make things more interesting . Happy shooting !
Why did you use the AD300 for the separation light instead of as the main light?
There is no difference between the output of AD200 and 300
Where do you monitor the levels and the sound? Do you have earphones plugged into the H6, Dji monitor, or camera headphone input?
👍
Great advice, thanks Tony!!

Hi Tony, what's your opinion of the Magmod XL compared to a 24" softbox? In what situations would your prefer the XL to a softbox?
Hi , the Magmod i will use it as a fill llight outdoors to open up the shadows , any time i just need a pop of light because it can blend with ambient pretty good and looks natural a , a soft box it will always be more versatile .
@@tonyroscaphotography For the purpose of a fill, how would you determine the power setting of your flash? If the lighting condition changing OR the model is moving about in a fluid motion OR in the case of a wedding when lighting conditions change, would TTL(+/-) be advisable?
@kennethcheong4498 yes i will dial the exposure compensation -07, -1 stop . I am a heavy user of light meters and i will keep the output of the flash low to contribute only 20-40% procent of the whole exposure to look natural. In changing lighting situation depending on your camera and TTL system i think less is better . I will stil bounce the light even modified if I am in small spaces .
@@tonyroscaphotography Wow! Thank you for the detailed reply. I'm guessing that the 20-40% of the light depends on whether it is a high-key or low-key situation? Could you do a video on how you determine this 20-40% in practice? Thank you so much! Kenneth
@kennethcheong4498 the light meters like Sekonic will measure the ambient and the flash contribution for exposure and will show the percentage on the device . You can adjust the output on your flash to reach the percentage you want. The 20-40% its standard when you try to blend your flash with ambient. I will do a tutorial when I get the chance for sure.
Did you come to any conclusions on corners IQ? I'm finding it hard to find anything concrete on the XF14, Viltrox I already know what it looks like in the corners. If the Fuji has the Viltrox beat on the corners then Fuji has won imo. Just don't know what corner IQ is like on the XF14 and whether it is mushy rubbish or quite good. Thanks!
Its funny because i was thinking about the same thing and i will do a test between today or tomorrow to see the corners sharpness. I am going to shoot in a rainforest and need to pack light. I will let you know . Planning to test from wide open to F11 to see how they compare.
@@tonyroscaphotography Dustin Abbot did a fairly comprehensive review of the Viltrox 13, diffraction kicks in after f5.6. I got a good idea of corner IQ from that video too. What is difficult to ascertain is just more info about the 14/2.8. I am not at all surprised to hear you comment on the warmer tones from the Fuji, and of course we can tell the difference in DoF between 1.4 and 2.8, and I can even see what you mean about the micro contrast on the 14/2.8, the colour graduation does seems smoother. I'm really now just wondering how good its corners are for 14mm. The distortion looks ok too. I'm wondering if it is a hidden gem, because a lot of wide angle lenses do crumble in the corner department. The new XF8/3.5 is of course a very different focal length, but the corners are just not quite there, and part of me feels all these wide angle lenses need to be decent in the corners, otherwise what's the point? I don't care so much about corners with my tele's optics because their primary use mainly falls into stuff like portraiture where I'm shooting shallow DoF and corners are oof anyway etc. But on a wider lens I kinda want a 'do-it-all', nice for some environmental portraiture, nice for some city/architecture/landscape, etc. Keep me posted! Thanks!
I took some pics this morning with both lenses and from 2.8 to 5.6 Fuji def had better corners. It holds more details and contrast . Viltrox kicks in by F5.6 . But if you want center sharpness and blurred background viltrox pics are more pleasant but the foreground and background elements need to be away from your center subject to render a soft blur . I like Viltrox lens but you either use it at F1.4 or F5.6-8. . I might end up taking both on my photo trip because i will take portraits too and 1.4 will be great in low light but for landscape Fuji is better.
@@tonyroscaphotography Thank you, it definitely feels like a close call between the two lenses!
Great video thanks. Eric looks like he needs a nap!
Lol, thanks , he is a night owl!
That was too funny!!! I know the feeling however only sometimes ;)
I only sleep 4-5 hours and I am either awake or out in 2 min top! 🤣
Ai uitat limba mamei.
Lol! Niciodata!
Can i ask what braket is, your using to hold AD200?
Its an S2 speed light bracket , Godox and Neewer and few ither companies make them . You can find it on Amazon for 25$ . It will work with speed lights like Godox V1, Ad200 and even with AD 300 if need it
@tonyroscaphotography thank you so much. I use the Ad200 and V1. I purchased the godox XL, which arrived today. Little did I know I would need a new bracket. Thank you again for your help.
Ambele lentile sunt ok dar un extra wide si 4stopuri de diagramă la Viltrox își spun cuvântul.Prefer Viltrox in acest caz.
I use both, and both are good lenses . Fuji are farmecul ei care il prefer in citeva situatii si Viltrox e mai buna in low light. M-ai am citeva lentile de la ei pt Fuji si sunt foarte bune si pretul e incredible low. Plus absolut pot fi folosite pt profesional work
@@tonyroscaphotography eu 99% folosesc 18_55mm fuji... este excelent obiectivul.
De acord, e o lentila excelenta , ce camera folosești?
Is that a 70-200mm?
Yes , the EF verion not RF. I like the internal zoom
@@tonyroscaphotography beautiful. Thank you!
Thank you!
total bs how much fuji pay you for your post editing i have both these lens there is no way the fuji is so better when processing the same the viltox is better
How much Viltrox pay you to make this comment ? I still have both lenses , still didnt changed my mind .
try to measure 50cm from the center spot. godox has something like a 200mm zoom. that means that light quality is worse in godox because we have too much hot spot in the center and much more falloff (if you shoot 2 person, you have to compensate in post pro for the light loss of the person farest from the center of the frame)
Its hard to illuminate 2 people just with the bare flash. Did you zoom out at the widest settings? The inverse square law still applies . I will aim the flash more towards the farther person from the flash . But its something to look into it. Thank you
@@tonyroscaphotography yes for two or more people I use even pattern (not center weighted or standard) and zoom head position in bounce flash wide (not zoom). more the pattern is center weighted more hot spot you will have not for the inverse square law relative to the differnent distance but because the pattern itself is much more concentrated in a little spot and the light fall off is much less diffused (it’s like the difference between a 5 degree grid or a 20 degree grid, the dimension of the bulb remain the saim but the size and dept of the grids - or the light focusing of the inner parabolic is different so the curvature of the parable will change the transition between in focus and not in focus area)
I never use it this way but its something i have to look at and try because i am using small flashes lot more now than bigger strobes. I usually use a 3/4 stop 4’x4’ diffusion panel in front of the flash but need an extra heavy stand and kinda want to go just with the flash to minimize my equipment weight. Definitely i will look into it when I get the chance and thanks again for bringing this up because it’s a very important issue and i see you did your homework on it and I respect that
👏👏👏
This page seems like a Godox fan page or wanna be ambassador
Lol, I use Elinchrom and Profoto more than Godox . Small jobs almost 100% Godox. I spent enough money on lights to know they loose value fast. Too fast
The user interface on the V1 is infuriatingly-bad. Changing flash intensity during a high-energy portrait session is unnecessarily frustrating. The thumb wheel is junk, and susceptible to dust, dirt and water intrusion. If the flash doesn't "hear" you touch left on the thumb wheel first, trying to change intensity will change modes, forcing you to dick with the controls for several more seconds just to get back to where you were. Displaying intensity as a fraction of a fraction is stupid.
I agree with you, the new V1 Pro has the same interface without any improvements. I am shooting 95% off camera and the adjustments via remote are easy . Also i try to use manual mode most of the time because its predictibile . Hopefully they will come out with a new version to match the new Nano trigger interface and than will be a great . I am using Profoto system too and believe me I have the same problems . Cheers!
@@tonyroscaphotography I shoot only manual, on-camera, while running around barefoot on a Caribbean beach. TTL is a gimmick. If I could have a custom flash built, it would have an on/off switch, and an intensity knob sticking out of the middle of the back of it. I don't even need a display. One or two test shots, and I'd be rolling. I'd welcome a small cooling fan, even if it added some bulk.
It’s too small lol I’ve been trying to use it but the spinner wheel was gold
I am using the side button most of the time now too . I like that is small, easy to carry .
@@tonyroscaphotography I mean. How much more room does the XPro take up lol I’ll keep trying to get used to the new one don’t get me wrong but when you’re in a shoot trying to find the right light power quick especially in the sun, the small controls get intense haha
@@JerryC25 i hear you, i just did today a shoot on the beach, blazing sun out there and for God sake i had to pull the shirt over my camera to see the controls . I always carry 2-3 remotes with me because I start getting paranoic after i had 2 Profoto Connect Pro fail on me last year during a very important client shoot.
@@tonyroscaphotography just got you on Instagram
What can a soft box is that. You should be telling people in your description that's why you only have 900 views
Its a Parapop II 28" , It has a removable outer and inner diffuser and also it has magnetic attachement for flash and safety device to hold your flash securely to the modifier, Sorry for the late response , I thought was visible in the video but I will make sure to add the gear in description for now on. Have a great day .
