- Rental scooters have FINALLY hit the streets of London - albeit in a limited capacity and with much controversy - so we thought it was time to put the three e-rides to the test and see if they're really worth the hype.

I'm disabled with a chronic illness that's left me housebound with badly damaged lungs, I can't get to my local shops 5 minutes up the road.
My little kugoo g2 pro scooter has litteraly changed my life, I can go out to the shops, go for a ride to the park, and more importantly get to hospital check ups without the massive risk of having to get in a cab, the idea that I might get stopped and prosecuted for doing this just beggers belief tbh.
Seems to me the tories are more than happy dragging their heels while they try to figure out the best way to profit from this new age of transport rather than do anything that might actually help the public get back to their lives..
I have reduced the power down to 50% on my Kugoo M4 with its onboard menu so that the speed in gear1 is 4mph and in 2 it is 8mph and I have registered it as a class III mobility scooter. I have a registration plate and road TAX.
@@shawng5799 thanks for the advice, I have looked into that route and have added turn signals, reflectors, and the other bits listed as needed, I still had no idea if it they would let me register it though so genuinely thank you for the tip and letting me know of your success 👍I will get my forms filled and sent asap 🙂

@@rud3y249 It is over a year since I did mine but I used the wrong form. I used the one for a secondhand scooter when it should have been for a new one and I ended up with a"Q" plate. This is now a plate were the TAX auto-renews and I can stick it on anything😁 It comes up on a PNC check as"INVALID". Which really is deeply offensive I think.
@@shawng5799 don't worry thinking you use the wrong one as to get not a q plate you with need a certificate of newness from the manufacturer

I would... but the voi ones in the south west are very big and bulky and have license plates on them... much harder job.
no the rental ones are made of huge metal bars and extremely heavy not like the flimsy private ones

they are remarkably like the larger pure scooters (exactly same layout but handle bars changed) So i reckon stickers on that would work (from a distance) but then thats advertising without permission

I wouldn't be surprised if the bus companies have a say in the reason why private e scooters are illegal. As if you think about it it would lose them a big portion of customers as alot of people would probably ditch public transport and use a escooter instead.
It`s also greedy councils making it difficult for us, and MORE money for them.

"No where to put a rear light" : helmet and bag/clothing mounted lights have been available for years.
I think it's safe to say....that money was exchanged between the "legislators" and the companies that are renting out the scooters, which is why privately owned ones are still illegal.

I’ve been seeing dozens of people riding escooters on roads and cycle paths recently, and the majority of them are either too young to be riding in the first place or are riding in a dangerous manner (or both), so making escooters illegal clearly isn’t stopping the sort of people who are giving escooters a bad name from riding them, all it’s doing is stopping law abiding folk, most of whom would probably ride perfectly safely if they were allowed to, from taking advantage of an efficient, relatively eco friendly mode of transport.

Yes it unfortunately could be delaying them be legal, just as a celeb died from one and there is a small group of bad user's, who are affected how the government treats other people who use or wish to use them safety.

In Other towns rentals e scooters stays unoccupied most of the time and people are still using their own ones, which obviously make more sense.
Thank god I've packed my scooter and moved to France for the summer. Here they are classified as e-bikes if they have a max speed of 25km/h (15.5m/h).
Its france that own voi. There taking over the rental scoots over here horrible company.
Many countries had created low speed vehicles laws, where PEVs ,ebikes ,other low speed vehicles can fit into. It just simplifies and standardizes any rules and policies. UK seems to be going down the patch work model of laws.

@@jasecee8992 15mph is not fast per say but for commuting in city its reasonable speed, if you allow especially rental vehicles go faster than that you can be sure people will hurt themselves. In finland the rental boards are already little bit of an issue, drunk people keep crashing with them.
What I don’t really get is the limitation of renting.. you have to find a parking bay at your destination.
I think I’ll stick to my Brompton, of which I can fold and take with me anywhere.
I have long term rental and take it home, but still I have too many issues of random power cuts, I'll be glad to get back on my ebike when it's fixed

It really depends on the area for example in the United States in Washington DC the bikes and scooters won’t work when you are around the capital and the monuments where people will be taking pictures etc. but they work pretty much to get you right up to those points and going around all the roads everything in the thing that’s nicer about DC is for most part you can just leave the scooters wherever you go which is kind of convenient because you can go around the corner and see a few bikes randomly in against the side of a wall and be like actually I wanna get a scooter and you just take it and then let’s say you get to a restaurant you can literally just set it aside so it’s not in the way in check out and leave it there there are some exclusions but overall I feel like it’s a better way for them to do it that way because that is available everywhere versus trying to hunt down a zone
I really hope our government legalize all PLEV's next year, I'll be pissed if they only stick with the rental e scooter's.

It’s only escooters that we are hearing about and I don’t think the other devices will be considered. If they put rules on physical breaks in place you can wave goodbye to EUC’s 🤦🏽

Signalling with your legs instead of arms works, you can still maintain stability as long as your other foot is on the middle of the platform.
Tfl don't give af about safety and the amount of potholes in the city is evidence of that
Need to mention, lime scooters are limited to 12.5 mph, too slow for the road, cyclists can over take you with ease, restricted zones, powers down the scooters etc
I agree 12.5mph is too slow. 15.5mph minimum is vital.
Also reason in ,if you plan on going longer distances going like 100km multiple times a week , it can gett pretty pricey compared to having your own escooter

This is a big solution in the states for last male transport from example in Boston you might walk around the city to your work and everything and then take the train back to your town and then instead of walking those wanted to miles were having a car to get those 2 miles you can have a scooter DC is the same thing
@@davidsworld5837 Depends on the city in DC you literally can just leave them anywhere as long as they were out of the way they are certain exclusions but in general if you’re walking around Washington DC you can see electric scooters all over the place there’s always usually one with an I shot

I had a problem in Paris with lime not letting you pause or stop when parked at a lime parking area or lack of info to where to park! but great fun and a leg saver!
This makes me sad for the UK, but happy Vancouver, BC went with a privately owned scooter trial first. 15mph/24kph supposed limit, with rentals considered later. There is somewhat of an amnesty on e-skate and EUC as long as you are not being an arse. They will also be considered later.

They have other costs as well such as insurance, repairs, retrieval of wrongly parked scooters, the cost of paying someone to drive to each one switching the user batteries for charged ones plus the cost of the scooter in the first place. It is a bit steep in price but cheaper than a taxi and similar price to a bus if you don’t use a bus regularly . They are priced ok for the odd trip but expensive if you want to use them everyday. A bit like getting a taxi.

I'm from NZ and we have rental e-scooters such as Lime, as well as Uber, Beam, and Flamingo and they are very successful. Many people like to use it for fun or commute instead of taking the bus, even school children. There aren't many accidents either and you don't need a license. There are designated parking spots and you park there you get bonus credits but otherwise you can park anywhere.

I worked out if one rid a rental e scooter costing £1 daily then 15p each minute for 15 min each day for 5 days a week in one year it is about £790 one time each day and £1580 two times a day so over a year it would of paid for the scooter, not only a e scooter but one of the best faster type you can get, so I would say e scooter rental is only useful in the short term.
And that is not even the lowest amount you will have to pay, also will need to pay to do a test to get a licence, insurance, buy a registration plate.
So unfortunately a e/bicycle will be more useful, sure if you need to go on trains and buses, then a e scooter will be a better option.
The only way it will be more useful is to increase the speed of them, but unfortunately the law would label them as a moped or motorbike, then you might have to pay more for insurance etc.
It doesn’t take long to realise that tbh, it’s a money making scheme for UK gov

I mean at £10 per hour that ain’t cheap but then again train tickets in UK are amongst the most expensive in the world….
@@grandcalifornia8410 yes I think that is as the government sold the railway, I have noticed stagecoach bus company constantly trying to get people to use their buses, I think they could be scared, because if e scooters become legal i think it will reduce; taxi, bus, maybe train usage.

£1 to unlock and £0.50 per minute... No wonder "they" don't want to legalise personally owned scooters. I used rental sccoters in Brisbane Aus in March 2020, and it was $0.49 (AUD) to unlock and $0.28 per minute

What they should do is just basically have a law or and signs that say minimum speed 5mph on paths etc.
As I don't think people should need to think of if they are breaking the law riding one on the path, sure at a certain speed on the path could be a safety issue that is why there needs to be a system to cap the speed on paths.
But tbh yes it would probably be pointless using a e scooter on the path if you only can go walking speed.
I actually think the Government's trial being a year (two years, if you include the trials in other cities last year) is too long. Six months for this sort of thing is long enough, and they should have invited private e-scooter owners to participate in the consultation so the Govt have a wider view of e-scooter usage.
Another thing is, if you are rushing for work, do you really have time to use a slow e scooter and do the sign in sogn out thing, rental makes sense but I don't think it should be the norm, people should be allowed to use there own e scooter if the safety standards are ticked.
And then you get to work and find either, no space to park, or a parking area that isn’t recognised by the app?

My borough is not even on the list. I still ride my private one. Not sure that I will even ride a rental one when I bought my own. Idk how this trials is going to represent the journeys we do to work or to social events.
It's not about the scooter spec or look as such private / public one.... it's about the rider , the traceability as unfortunately scooters self propelled usually with a seat fitted often upto 15mph is actually very similar or the same criteria as 1970s to current day DVLA license motor vehicle category . Pedal E bikes do not have these similar criteria issues . The exact answer to Electro heads problem although long is explained in full courtesy of

I don't understand why they don't legalize private e scooters like electric bikes like everywhere in the world. the scooter needs the initial thrust and the bike the first pedal stroke after half pedaling the bike goes by itself pedaling empty.

they are expensive in Nottingham. it costs around £1 per 10 minutes of use whether riding or waiting. they don't have indicators either so are pretty dangerous on the road and you can't use them on pavements.
We are yet to get rental e scooters in Northern Ireland. But when they do eventually come i'll be wearing a motorbike helmet
I've always said that bicycles should have registration marks, like cars, so people are accountable for their actions and everybody is safer. I see that the rental scooters have registration marks and I think that would be the key for privately own personal transport of all kinds. Registration could be via an app and therefore the government could still get data for analysis. Register your vehicle, display a registration mark/number and then confiscate any scooter or bike not displaying a registration. How is that any harder to regulate than the rental scooters? The only difference I see is that the government and private rental company can't make money.
So how many times have bicycles caused deaths, damage and injuries compared to cars even though bicycles have been a round a lot longer than cars? Bicycles are not the culprit here, it's the 1.5 ton+ motorized vehicle that is - all over the world.
@@MrVaultTec It's not the bike that is the culprit, but the riders often go up on the pavement when the lights go red. I don't recall the last time I saw a car do that.

@@MrVaultTec Since you are asking, actually it has caused injuries and deaths. I don't have up to date figures, but in 2017 over 500 pedestrians were hit by cyclists and deaths were in single figures, but it did still happen. I don't know how many of those actually happened on pavements as opposed to roads. Granted the figures pale into insignificance next to those caused by cars. By the way, before you dismiss me as a fat lazy car driver, I own a private e-scooter and only use the car for the weekly shop and taking my toddler to see her grandmother.
@@leftyamazed I'm not calling you a lazy car driver per se but a lot car drivers love to criticize cyclists while sitting in their motorized cages cluttering up the roads causing grid lock eveywhere when a lot of times they don't actually need to (e.g. school runs). I have a huge issue with this. We should be encouraging healther and less space invading forms of transport especially in the cities where cars do not work during rush hour. Putting all these constraints on bicycles (which have been around a LOT longer than cars) is just discouraging people to use them. Are there idiots on bicycles? Of course, but the idiot motorist has the potential to cause a ton more damage than any cyclist - much more easily as well.
At 3.04 you entered a one way street against the traffic flow and rode down it for its entire length.
At 3.17 you approached a roundabout in the wrong part of the road and were travelling in the wrong direction to turn right. You looked from behind as though you were going to continue left and were not signalling. The driver of the 15ton bus approaching the roundabout had to stop on the roundabout to give way to you.
You are supposed to be promoting safety and responsibility of e-scooters and you question why the government is not legalising them.
Assuming a small person weighs 100kg, an e-scooter weighs 16kg and a standard moped weighs 100kg.
if you run into me at 12mph on your e-scooter, it would be the same as someone running into YOU on your e-scooter with a standard moped at 9.3,mph. I'm sure if you were injured as a result of the latter scenario, you'd demand that the moped rider should have basic road skills (i.e. none are reqd for a provisional licence to ride a moped) and insurance. Just as the law says the moped rider doesn't need road knowledge, the law says e-scooter riders don't need it either. unfortunately insurance for e-scooters is not compulsory? Fancy being hit by a moped at 9mph = e-scooter at 12mph?
I'm not paying that much for renting a legal scooter ! I own an escooter, i bought it 300 quid from pure ! They are fun and amazing, money saving and eco friendly, it's 2021 and goverment should bother and create a legislation for them ! WE NEED E-SCOOTERS.

They only want to keep the speed limited to 12mph because they can't trust all members of the public to ride a safer lower speed on a pavment

Voi have a beginners mode u can activate in the app limiting to 10mph. They should make that the default for a certain length of ride time before you can then go 15.5mph. That solves them worrying about newbies going full speed 🤷♀️

I think that's crazy. You just jump on a scooter and off you go. Just like a bike. Except you're standing up and can go a bit faster. You replied to another mesage, bht I can't find where it is here, but - I'm living in Norway, and everyone's got a scooter or uses a scooter. Best thing I've ever done. I got the zero 10x. Gets me up all the hills easy. More freedom than a car or bike. This thing does off road too! 😂

To me it is like saying oh you don't need any of them things if you drive a few car but you do if you drive a standard car, I seriously think if they allowed e scooters to go faster when they become legal in the uk, then eventually that would mean no one will use cars, buses, trains etc. So it will speed up a better environment for the uk, as obviously oil fuels will be reduced, space will be increased.
But aslong as they cap it at 15.5mph, it just seems like a expensive and time consuming transportation, I think the idea was with a e scooter, was to make it easier on buses and trains as obviously bicycles use to much space on buses and trains, so the insurance etc what people will have to pay if they use a e scooter vs bicycle, they probably end up paying more cash just for only the convenience of having more space on a train or bus.

I think I heard Norway etc had more cycle paths over there vs the uk, although an mp is saying he will be making a infrastructure to be more biased to cyclists and e scooter user's, what will obviously mean it will eventually abolish cars etc.
@@oddity4650 Hi mate. I bought my scooter two weeks ago. No problems. My scooter is unrestricted. It's fast. It's huge also. It's for all terrain. So it's powerful. I have to be respectful when in public with it.
However, you get the same idiots over driving the hired ones drunk, and crashing into others or having an accident themselves. The limit here is 15mph also.

The rental scooters companies pay verywell to stop us using our e scooters as a bikes on streets.The rent the scooters for 0.15 p per minute.So 60min x0. 15 p is 9£ per hour.The best bussiness.
Lol, such a scam, in romania I used bolt scooters before buying my own mi pro 2 and the bolt scooters were free to unlock and costed like 0.5 euro (no joke, 0.25 ron) per minute and they could go with 25 kph and there aren't any stupid regulations here like you can ride in parks and sidewalks and there is no legal speed limit and you don't even have to be 18 you have to be 14 but I've seen 10yo kids ride e scooters.

also spending 300 to to over 6k on a escooter may be a lot of money at the start but its a hell of a lot cheaper then spending 6 to 20£ each day on a rental scooter
Love my Currus NF+ it will do 40mph but I rarely go top speed, just when I need to blend with traffic to be safe. There is something really wrong in your country the way they are handling this. Follow the money.
Uk law against harmless e scooter are pathetic actually ebikes are allowed if throttle fitted inside the padels and they can able to do 15.5mph funny thing is China start making e scooter 🛴 with padels fitted to make it legal in uk. Simply uk have no interest in safety they only trying to make money out of rental scooters , we should immediately launch campaign against rental fraud .
At 12.5mph the cheapest mile is 80p and you would have to go max speed. Realistically it's a quid a mile.

I live in midlands {Bedworth}and cant walk far 100 yards maybe,about £4 for a 2 mile journey on a bus,I have a illness ,but id wouldnt buy e-bike if needed a licence or insurance,yes i have licence,but why should i ?normal bikes go double that speed and more.This a e-bike tax to stop public ownership and is wrong.If they tax e-bikes, more will switch to normal bikes.
Buy your own. You would save more by saving up little at a time and buying it yourself. Because your not limited on where your personal scooter can go and not limited to their specific features. If you say you can't save then why are you renting something that makes you pay more just to use temporarily in the long run. Because a basic e-scooter is around $200. And a good one for basic commuting is $400-500. And reliable and fun is $600-over $1000. Plain and pure awesomeness is over $2000. In America, basic e-scootersin the $200 range can go up to 15mph. This speaks volume about England.
So we only allow rental trails, which means chats with councils on where the parking bays can be, or, and this is crazy talk, we allow private scooters, they are leaves at home or at the office, not on the pavement and getting everyone riled up. Gee, i wonder what we do…oh, yeah go with the money.
They're really expensive for one, and it's so stupid that you have to have a driving licence and be 18, I think 14 is reasonable and you shouldn't need a licence, and there shouldn't be as many banned zones. Another thing is that it's annoying that you have to download an app and make an account, that's a pain, they should also have a contactless reader on the scooter so you can pay with your bank card (the beryl scooters/bikes have a contactless reader, but you can only use it to use to unlock the scooter, not to pay with contactless)
About that amnesty thing, I personally don't think I'd like to be tracked wherever I go or what speeds I do throughout a ride, I keep to the road rules anyway when riding my wheel (100 volt MSX), to I'm a responsible 50 year old male with arthiritis, not an adolescent with no care for there own health & safety, the quicker they legalize PLEV's the the better for everyone that owns there own for it's proper intended perpose as a device for getting about quicker while freeing up space on roads, making the atmosphere cleaner, reducing Covid spread & getting to work on time, every time to keep there job to pay taxes that the government so love taking from us, & they still at wanna take our freedom to travel just because these devices have an electric motor.

The UK GOV. never going to make private e-scooters legal and if so this will be a slap in the face, the rules will be ridiculous. Now with all the trials all around the UK, we clearly can see how much money local authorities making and they won't give up this so easy. Well, my ZERO 10X is still impounded by Police, I'm scared to death ride my EUC, and no way in the world I will use public transport to go and back from work, my only solution, for now, is walking to work what takes me an hour each way. That how the UK GOV treats a working man paying taxes and trying to save an enviriment.

Still riding my wheel when needed, screw the cops, they can only charge me IF they can get the chance to ask to stop me, now, I'll evade, detour & not give them the chance, I need my wheel as a part mobility scooter because I have arthritis & think I got it in my ankles now because even a short walk hurts em, so on that note, I'll take my chances, the risk of riding outweighs the risk of getting cought for me & that's a fact.

Means any type of machine on wheels, skis or on self-laid tracks made or intended to be propelled other than by manual or animal power. They need to be treated the same , great means of transport ! I have a moped , had to 1) Take lessons 2) Written Test 3) Road test 4) Provisional Licence 5) bike has no plate (ID) 5) road tax 6) INSURANCE 7) Must wear a approved helmet . ETC . That statement about UK been only country where E scooters are illegal is grossly inaccurate

Well said, good video and great presenting. Every scooter replaces a car and instead of embracing the electric revolution and the climate crisis our government is aggressively using a loophole in ancient laws to stop it. Especially during Covid, when people are afraid of public transport, the scooter revolution is a wonderful thing. This kind of backward behaviour makes me ashamed to be British. A scooter is an innocent child’s toy, half the size of a bicycle, with a tiny electric motor smaller than my hand. Giving innocent users of scooters 6 points on their car driving licenses, £400 fines and confiscating their scooters is SHAMEFUL behaviour in the 21st century. When cyclists behave badly, we say “look at that idiot cyclist” but when scooter-riders behave badly we blame the scooter!!! There is a disproportional number of idiots on scooters at this time BECAUSE of the police: only law-breaking people are using them! Legalise ownership and treat them as bicycles and all that will change.
