      Bought a salvaged 65 reg Ka a few months back to run around in. Cost me 3k in total to buy & fully repair & had less than 3k miles on it when I bought it (now has 3.3k).
      Have an 09 reg R3 RX8 for sh!ts & giggles that I bought over 10 years ago with 15k miles (now has 28k)
      I don't have/need a smart phone as I've had the same Nokia C3 for as long as I can remember - about 8 or 9 years possibly, maybe longer.
      My Qosmio laptop is nearly 8 years old & still perfectly usable as I spent well on that as I use it for my work too - when I actually do any lol.
      My TV is a small (nowadays) 42" that I bought back in Feb 2008 (had to check) that I only bought as my then 18 yr old TV blew it's tube, yes, an old type TV lol. I only use my almost 14 year old "new" TV for videos or as a larger monitor for my Laptop when needed as I don't watch TV anymore.
      So, I buy stuff when I need it or on a very rare occasion as a treat (the RX8 being the last treat), not to show of as Rory says. Never seen the point in wasting hard earned just to show your family, firends & neighbours how much "debt" you can get/have lol ;p

      I agree, but the second hand EV market is much different than ICE vehicles, and makes entry into the EV market affordable for most. My used 2014 Leaf is as powerful and runs as smooth as it did when new (an inherent benefit of electric propulsion). In the 4 years that I have owned it, and driven it daily, it has required zero maintenance or repair. It would have been difficult to find a clean 2014 ICE vehicle with the same tech as mine for the same price, and I'm sure I would have spent much more on maintenance and repair, as is the norm for second hand ICE vehicles.

Battery modules are usually cooled with some oily concoction ,and that has an expiry date, so that needs to be changed also after its lifetime end (at latest). The charging speed is great on them sure, but one of the better advantages with 800v is the temperature control because you don't need as thick wiring to hold the charge. A side effect of this is weight, since you can use thinner wiring, weight is kept to a minimum (since move of the weight will be the battery itself).

    Brilliant review, Rory, you are the number one car reviewer for me. Great evaluation of the market. Perhaps if people want to save the planet by choosing electric cars, perhaps we should get away from the 200mph idea. Nearly all of all the worlds non urban roads are limited to something around 80-90mph max. So let's just limit ALL vehicles to that, say 100mph. As, travelling any faster in whatever vehicle will just use more electricity, which needs to be generated one way or another. People should just stop wasting electricity, or any other power source, make smaller, more efficient cars, and endeavour to get people out of heavy/big cars. Most of us aren't much bigger than people were 50 years ago most everyday cars weighed about a tonne. So why are cars so huge now? Just need to stop it...

I hate myself for saying so but I wish the "oil companies" would realize that they have to be "energy companies" now in order to have a future, to begin to take electric car charging seriously and put high speed chargers, under cover at every forecourt at a price that will drive muppets like Osprey, Instavolt and the like out of the market. The only ones I have any time at all for are Pod Point and Chargeplace Scotland.
      Covers over charging stations. Is that too much to ask for, really? "You nice and dry filling your diesel car up there mate? Yeah, well I'm handling 400 Volts in the pouring rain here and I'm about to shit myself"
      And here's a migration tip for all EV drivers. Move to Scotland where you can charge your cars for half the cost of charging in England, or for free even, and they're everywhere. And if you live in North Wales, don't even bother. Most chargers are broken and will never be repaired anyway.

Thing is, I know a refreshed e-tron, along with a Q6 is coming, but that didn't stop me. I think it's smart to not buy an electric vehicle now, but rather lease it, as battery tech is changing fast. @@TheThink5op That could be just due to the weird used car market now. Our values increased when new car shortages shocked the auto industry. That's still present.
      For example, I got a lot more for my 2018 S4 than what it should be worth right now. At least here in the U.S. Audi dealerships are getting anywhere from 150-220 cars on their lots by February.
      Putting two and two together, just five months prior, my S4 was worth $5-6k less when dealers still had cars. End of last month when I got rid of it, with more miles on it than it had five months ago, it was worth a lot more as the dealership only had 7 cars on their lot. Got rid of it earlier than I wanted due to the profits and once in a life-time circumstances.
      Those profits will dwindle back down to normal when new cars are back on the lots. So...I see what you're saying, but the inflated values of our pre-owns will eventually adjust back to normal.
      2018 S4 Prestige CPO w/ 20,143 miles purchase late February for $40,199.
      Sold last week of October...so 8 months later for $43,260.
      I checked my cars value in June and July of this year. June I was offered $36,800 and July, I was offered $37,300.
      So if you have a pre-owned Audi, sell it asap...and if you're looking to go electric with an e-tron from Audi, my advise is to lease it only.

      @@AutoTraderTV Hi Rory, another excellent video, BUT I have to disagree with your point about Lithium-Ion batteries. Unfortunately this IS soon going to be outdated and will make way for Lithium-Metal batteries. The reason Li-Met batteries aren't currently used is they are unstable (they have tendency to spontaneously combust), so obviously can't be used in EV's. However, recently, a team of researchers from the Material Sciences department at Harvard have found a way to stabilise Li-Met batteries so they're far less dangerous and the tech is now more applicable to EV's. Li-Met is considered 'the holy grail' of battery technology because of its extremely high energy density, meaning a lot more energy can be stored within the same volume, and the charging times are MUCH faster. 10-20 minutes to achieve a full charge, and the battery can go through at least 10,000 charge and discharge cycles, long outlasting the current lifespan of Li-Ion batteries, and even gas powered engines, not too mention a MUCH MUCH larger range and better performance figures

    If a long winter blackout occurs in a land of electric cars most of the population will
    perish in the freezing cold. The gas powered car that would provide cabin heat for
    many days will not be there. The electric car could only supply heat for a short time
    and would quickly discharge its battery making a trip to a shelter impossible.

    • @engineeringtheweirdguy2103
      @engineeringtheweirdguy2103 2 роки тому

      firstly, on a combustion car, you could expect it to idle on a full tank (assuming you just happened to fill up before the blackout, unlikley, whilst you charge your EV every night). for around 80-120 hours, depending on your fuel tank and engine size. Meanwhile a modern BEV with a full charge can run its cabin heater for around 75-135 hours depending on your battery size (50-100kWh).
      Next we can talk about things like refueling or recharging. Now we both know that without electricity, you cant buy fuel. The fuel pumps dont work and they cant process your payment anyway. So you have what ever fuel you have in jerry cans or if you have generator. Now if you have jerry cans. good for you, point to combustion. However if you have a generator, and most likely jerry cans to run the generator. (whats the point of owning a genny if you dont have fuel for it). Then its actually *more fuel efficient* to charge your EV with a cheap portable generator than it is to use that same fuel in a modern combustion engine.
      So if you're justing sitting in the cabin to stay warm, then its pretty neck and neck between EV and ICE assuming you just filled your fuel tank. (unlikely but we'll roll with it). but if you have a generator, EV's clearly take the cake. Giving longer hours and ranges with that fuel than you would putting it in ICE.

However, it's getting to the point of acceptable charge times and ranges. IMO, the Model Y makes the Model X obsolete already. Nearly just as practical, for like half the price. And don't tell me a model X is much more luxurious. It isn't luxurious at all.

    Yes the depreciation is a big problem for buying new EV's, especially right now because we are only at the beginning of this new tech. However for second hand market it is great news, because of the hard depreciation we can get cheap EV's sooner rather than later.

    • @matpat2636
      @matpat2636 3 роки тому +1

      Most EV's have low depreciation, usually the lowest of a manufacturer's mainstream cars. Even before the second-hand car price craziness. Audi, Porsche, Kia, Hyundai have all said their EV's have lower depreciation than the equivalent combustion cars in their ranges.

      @@bolt5564 Not exactly. The biggest issue in EE’s video is that he assumes that if you get rid of your car, then the car will no longer be driven. That is not true, because often you will sell your car to another owner who will then drive the car. Currently, from the standpoint of emissions, it will always be better to keep driving a fully electric car until it is deemed no longer fit for the road.

      This will change in the future if full EVs becomes the primary transport vehicle on the road, but until that’s the case, it will be better to keep running an EV to the ground, even if it means replacing the battery in between

    "Will Today's Electric Cars Soon Be OBSOLETE?" A: No. Not if they still do what you need. We're keeping our 2016 e-Golf SE with 84-mile range until it craps out. So far, almost zero battery degradation, even without battery thermal management. We replaced tires, wipers, and washer fluid. We charge it almost exclusively on 110-120 v with GFCI. That's it. Does 99.735% of our driving needs; rentals for the rest. Don't _need_ a big ass touchscreen, FSD, sub 4 second 0 - 60, etc. etc. It's transportation, not a fashion accessory.
