The Oilers announced that Kane is stable and being taken to the hospital for a procedure later this evening.

@@uriah9645 if it cuts you in the arteries, that is extremely close to your nerves. This could be season ending. If it's bad enough, career ending.
@@TheEDFLegacy no. The absolute worst case is he has tendon, ligament, and/or nerve damage or some combination of the 3. He won't be out for long.

It is pretty incredible that this doesn't happen more. I think it may be a testament to the hyper-awareness that hockey players seem to have. Your body is a constant weapon; equipped with knives for feet, long and light blunt swords, and extra speed.
Firing a projectile weapon toward people.
Pretty simple... Skates are on the ice, hands are typically not...
The equipment really does cover more than you'd think. I've played hockey since I was 5 (now 25 and sadly no rink near me 😭) and you really are well protected except for the neck. Youth hockey requires neck guards and some states require them for HS hockey which helps a lot in that respect. But the gloves do go further down the arm than just the hand. It does cover the wrist but the way he had his hand turned it exposed the wrist enough for the cut. This is the first time I've heard of someone getting their wrist cut during a game.
You don't see neck cuts happening though because you're taught right away that if someone is down you don't skate near their head. Especially the goalie the only time you go in close is when the puck is loose in the crease. If a player is down and the puck is near them you skate to get it but avoid the head.

I played goal for a long time. The amount of times we are on the ice, head near the ice trying to cover a puck, and players stomping all over ...when I stopped playing I thought oh man, I could have been stepped on and seriously hurt, not sure how this never happened
Man I know Kane's one of the most controversial players in the league but you don't want to see that happen to anyone, glad he's doing better now

Only like a year ago a kid in Connecticut passed away after getting a cut in the neck. It’s so rare that I couldn’t believe it but it’s also terrifying to think about how easily it can happen out there
Don Cherry (love or hate him) was critical of short gloves since players started using them. Many more injuries with these, while full cuffs cover to the elbow pad.
I agree with your comment. The older long style gloves offered much more protection. Kane may have avoided the injury or it may have been less severe, if he had the longer cuff gloves on. Also there are special wristband protectors and ankle protection socks, but few players wear them, l feel due to the hockey culture, of not wanting to appear scared or weak. Cheers.
You don't even need to change the gloves. Players can just wear kevlar compression sleeves and keep wearing whatever glove they want.
@@triketacular8093 I HATE that culture in sports. I always say if you really thought that way then why are you playing in any equipment? What are you scared? Take off that helmet and pads.

Hockey Content!!! While unfortunate this happened and we all wish Kane well, it's good to see hockey get some coverage, especially as the injuries can add variety and expand our knowledge. (i.e. you're not getting a cut like this in the NFL) On the "bleeds, it leads" side of things, hockey injuries can just be spectacular (alternate definition) to watch.

I’m shocked this doesn’t happen more often . hockey is a fast sport and the blades are sharp. i know some equipment prevents injuries but still stuff happens

Yeah but they are pros after all. It's not to often players end up in these vulnerable positions, but when they do they often have good enough awareness to prevent serious injury.
Good video. Usually it’s knee and ankle injuries. This cut on the wrist was a good opportunity to go over stuff we don’t usually see.
And I hope Kane is going to be alright. You never want to see a guy get injured like this.

Kane has his controversies, but ever since he became an oiler he has stayed out the drama and played some really good hockey. Hurts so much to watch. Hopping there is no long lasting injuries from this!

There was a lot of blood for the 1+ second it took for Kane to apply pressure with his gloved right hand, so it seemed pretty deep. Hope he regains full function.

Very scary to watch that amount of blood come out in such a short time. Immediately Kane knew there was a huge problem, and amazing response by all of the staff for the Oilers and Lighting. Hope for a speedy recovery. I did hear from a source close to the team that he may be out for 3-4 months.
That's one thing I love about the hockey community. We put aside our petty rivalries and our distaste of a person when they are injured. We see them for what they are a human being whose trying to provide us with entertainment and they don't deserve the injuries they get. Fingers crossed kane is able to play again. Fingers crossed he's in good health. I know I'd be freaking out squirting blood everywhere or I'd just pass out. I often have done that with the countless brutal injuries I've had. Felt pain woke up in the hospital😂
I’m sure he will play again but will probably be out a good month or 2 at least could be longer could be the rest of the season. Wishing this guy a speedy recovery!
Except we all wished this happened to Matthew Tkachuk after he intentionally tried to blind Jonathan Quick by turning his stick blade and poking it in Quick’s mask. So while we all don’t wish it on most players, Tkachuk would be the rare instance where we would have liked this to happen to given he tried to gouge a players eye out

I would love to see you do a video on what medical services are immediately available at arenas. I know Mullet arena in Tempe has to add on an auxiliary building to account got the portable X-ray machine required by the NHL. But I wonder what other services they have on site for players.

When I first saw the video before seeing the injury and the caption said “graphic” I thought it was a broken leg, then I see the play happen and then a giant spot of blood and I got scared for him. So glad to hear he’s stable and getting surgery
I'll never forget the Roy goalie cut jugular blood was everywhere. & I was at game in Philly we're brad marsh had his head crushed on a check.. was also same game Ronny hextal scored a goal..
Always threat of cuts when you have a sharp blade, freak accidents can happen, the jugular or wrist can bleed you out fast, speedy recovery to Mr Kane

What’s crazy is that this exact same thing happened to my teammate a few years ago so it’s cool to learn about the medical side of what happened to him. The only long term effects of cut was some immobility in the thumb which is pretty funny because he can’t snap anymore but that’s about it
By far one of the unluckiest injuries
Not _the_ unluckiest injury, though. There's been two injuries involving cutting the jugular veins. Both of them could have been fatal, and one of them was life altering.

@@peterf.229 yah goalies wear cut resistant neck guards now as standard equipment and there gloves are longer so if the hit the ice there wrist doesn't get exposed like the players that wear short gloves

That angle you’ve got really let’s you know how brutal that cut probably is. The slice is long and diagonal across his forearm and looked like it started about halfway up and got near the wrist. In the other replays it looks like a quick step over part of his wrist but this shows that it kinda just caught him the entire length as maroon stepped back.
I saw a similar injury to this happen to Alexi Yashin some years back. He missed about 30 games.
Donald Audette also had one similar to Kane's where he had his arm skated over while diving for a puck. It was against the Rangers I think...scary stuff

You can tell maroon went to lift his skate over the arm but with his motion of doing that kanes motion of moving his arm in closer to him caused this to happen one of those scary moments in hockey when it's no fault and it's extremely bad injury

I was a goalie for many years from age 6-32 let me say that hurts . I tore my lower abductor and groin at the same time . I feel for Kain and hope a fast recovery.
Playing in goal, I had a player crash my crease and his skate sliced across my thigh just above the knee. It was deep and gaping, but I wasn't that concerned about the seriousness of it, other than being unimpressed by the blood and the pain. But the other players and the ref took it dead serious. They immediately cancelled the game, tied off a pseudo tourniquet, and hauled me to the hospital. At the hospital, they jumped right into action too -- no waiting to be seen, they brought me directly in to be examined. I was lucky. I needed a lot of stitches, but other than that, no real damage, no lasting effects.
I manage a hockey pro shop and work with professional teams sharpening skates and fixing equipment. Hockey skates are cut into a U shape, and therefore are not as sharp as one may think. Although cuts can happen, the reason it's rare is because the blade is not as refined as a knife. Lots of professional hockey players also get shallower cuts (what we call sharpenings) because they get their skates done everyday. That also helps prevent injuries. They are also very aware of where their skates and bodies are. Cut injuries are more common among younger players, but their lack of weight and power is what prevents serious injury. Although some players have died from cuts. Many players wear cut resistant throat guards, socks, wrist guards, and some wear full cut resistant base layers.
Edit: It looks like Maroon may also use regular stainless steel blades versus carbon or titanium coated blades. Stainless steel blades don't get as sharp or strong as carbon or titanium coated blades so they also are less likely to cause deep cuts.
Can you do a breakdown of Zach Werenski's shoulder injury history? He just got his labrum operated on for the 2nd time, and as someone who's also got his labrum fixed before I think it would be a good breakdown.

His ligaments and tendons were cut to the bone he had to have some veins taken out from other parts of arm taken out to put in to replace blood vessels damage. 3 to 4 months off . But recovering post surgery

His estimated return is 3-4 months unfortunately but he’s apparently all good and no real damage has been said yet
Do amine harit, a Moroccan footballer for marseille had his knee mangled, just 8 days shy of his World Cup debut. cant even put into words what he must be feeling, he was just announced to the squad a few days ago😢
Dr. Sutterer, may I ask: In a similar situation, would it be appropriate to apply a bag of ice above the laceration in an effort to cause some vasoconstriction? Obviously, one would also apply pressure to the lacerated area and above, along with all of the other emergency measures being employed. Your video was very clear and informative. That’s a really good thought! I don’t think it would affect the large artery, though. When we use cold to help with swelling it’s targeting the capillaries rather than big vessels, but you’re definitely thinking along the right track of trying to cause some vasoconstriction
I’ve had a skate slice my wrist open and it’s definitely a scary injury, luckily it was not as bad as Kane’s but a few inches deeper and tendons would have been impacted from it, hope he recovers quick

I wear those wristband slash guards that is essentially a terrycloth wristband with a hard plastic sewn inside but even this may not help if the skate blade hits the wrong spot.

Is there a good medical kit that could be carrier in a hockey bag pretty easily for games, that could also be used by novices and experienced healthcare people alike? I know, likely due to the nature of the cost of the sport, that a lot of medical professionals play hockey, but it would be nice to have something on the bench in beer league that even a relative novice could learn to use to help stop some bleeding until actual medical staff could get on the ice to help.

ilya mikheyev when he was on the Leafs had a similar injury and took a long time to recover from it. I'm hoping players cover that area more going forward, maybe with another form of kevlar or something.

So Evander Kane confirmed himself that an artery and veins were severed, and said the cut was so deep it was down to the bone. Scary stuff. I hope he recovers quickly
Almost had something similar happen to me years ago, missed me by centimeters.
I almost had my toes cut off after a kid slammed his skate on the ground to get the snow off in the locker room once was lucky enough to just react in time
I'd love a follow up on this one, since he's out until at least February
NFL is the most brutal sport on paper but the NHL can also be very rough

I was watching a game and I saw he got checked but I didn't realize that one of the other guys had just ran over his wrist with his skate
As a hockey player myself, the video is scary enough to the point I’m keeping my wrists against my body right now.
For your point of saying you’re surprised it doesn’t happen more often: the only area that’s really exposed is your neck. You have thicker socks covering the unpadded part of your legs and the jersey is light but can take a skate blade. The wrists are only showing in certain directions based on where you’re pointing your hands. This is bc the gloves do cover farther down than just the hand. In youth hockey you wear neck guards and I honestly don’t get why pros don’t use them.
Instead of that, perhaps something to protect your wrists?

the neck guards are worn by some goalies , but you are right they should have them for all players . I never played hockey but I’ve watched NHL games in Philly , I was surprised how fast the players are. I’d want protection if I played . thanks for explaining the equipment in better detail.

Players wear shorter and shorter gloves. Full sized cuffs *may have* prevented this injury, but players don’t like the reduced wrist mobility (whether real or imagined).
What worried me at the moment it happened was Kane’s worried face, he knew something was severely wrong

I’ve always thought about how this doesn’t happen more often in hockey. That slice to malarchuk’s neck will always be one of the scariest things you’ll see.
Ever since I saw the Malarchuck and Zednik injuries I knew hockey wasn’t for me

Goalie gear does a very good job keeping the goalie safe. Lots of underarmer has cevlar in commonly exposed areas
Am a Sharks fan. Have loved Kane ever since he came to the team. Really feel the Sharks did him dirty. Really worried about this injury for him. The nerves & tendons can cause this to be a career ender. Would hate that for him. Hopefully he has a speedy & full recovery
Hey doctor! Idk if you’ll see this comment, but I’ve recently dislocated my knee cap for the second time this year. 4 times in my right, 2 times in my left. My knees just cannot seem to stay healthy and I do do exercises, but now I’m scared to play basketball because even something as simple as taking a step causes my knee to snap. It also usually happens very quickly, the knee cap snaps out and my knee bends out and then before I hit the ground, my knee cap snaps back into place. That has happened every single time but once, my left knee cap stayed out for 10 minutes at basketball practice! It’s getting so frustrating, every time I go out to play it seems to happen. Please any advice?

Yup!....Skate laceration's are particularly nasty. It doesn't help when you see all that white ice turn red as the blood start's gushing. A lot of guys panic. Kane did exactly what you should do. Another nasty hockey injury is collapsed wind pipe or throat. I was actually at a minor hockey league game and luckily there was a doctor that knew how to do a "tracheotomy"....Basically this 15 year old took a slap shot to the throat and they had to cut him and put a tube down his throat so he could breathe......And yes, people were really panicking.
I don't know how you doctor's, nurses and medic's stay so calm when the blood start's squirting.

Modern gloves just don't have high enough cuffs. Compare Kane's gloves to Wayne Gretzky's gloves from the 1980's. The old gloves provided much more wrist protection.
