I just subscribed. you have a great channel and a nice place. Looks like your cattle are getting more used to you and are more friendly than they were in earlier videos. Any special treatment you did with them or just being with them more. They are really friendly now.
Thank you! They are even friendlier now! We give them cubes as treats every couple of days and they will come up to us for head scratches all the time now. Well, except for Fancy. I think she will just always be standoffish!
Hi. Great video! I'm west of Houston and have an 11ac property and am thinking 3 heifer/steer combo to start. Decent pasture, feeder and water trough with pump in place. I have 5 strand barbed wire fence - what do you have and do they challenge it much? Also, I am 30 minutes away and would not be able to be around them everyday. Do you feel that would be a problem, assuming of course water and feed are always available? thx for your thoughts!
We have 3 by 3 pipe fencing. They do not challenge it at all. One of the benefits of this breed is they are generally easy on fencing. I don’t personally see why it would be an issue. Ours are very low maintenance and only come up to us when they decide they need cubes!
What area of Texas are you from? I’m over in East Texas area. Hopefully I can get some more fence put up this winter and buy a few Dexter in the spring.
I meant to ask you before on an average how much milk per day do ou get. Do you milk these cows for 10 months nd then dry them off or do you dry them off sooner? Thanks again and Happy Holidays!
We have not been able to milk them yet as we have not yet added a bull to the herd, but with calf sharing, people can get 3/4 to 2 gallons of milk a day. I’ve heard of some people getting more. One of the reasons we chose them is because we don’t drink enough milk to be able to use more than that!
Hi! We found our first two on Craigslist and the next two through a Central Texas Dexter Facebook group. As for Dexters, we are actually in region 7 of the ACDA and an e-mail is sent out at the beginning of each month and they list registered and unregistered Dexters for sale. There are a few in the Bryan area I have seen! If you are on Facebook and want the info, let me know and I’ll get you the link!
I do not currently, but if you are in the Central Texas area and have Facebook, there is a central Texas Dexter Facebook group. Also, Texas is in District 7 for the American Dexter Cattle Association and they send out an email at the beginning of each month that has Dexters listed for sale, both registered and unregistered. It’s where we got most of ours! Look up the ADCA 7 website and join the newsletter!
We got our first girls on Craigslist. They are kind of hard to find there, though. When I joined some Facebook groups, I found many more options. If you are in Texas, there is an ADCA group and we are in region 7. Most there are registered, but some are not. There is also a central Texas dexter group. You will find quite a few few there!
Fortunately for us our new bull is homozygous polled and 4 out of our 5 girls are polled! I love how they look, but am going to be staying away from horned in the future!
Nice video; thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you!!!!! And I am glad it was helpful!😊

Honestly didn’t know or ever heard of such a cow. Good luck.🍀
Thank you! We hadn’t heard of them until we specifically researched dual purpose cows! But, we love them!
👍

Amazing video. New subscriber. I have been looking at this breed for a while.

We are about an hour southwest of Ft. Worth. They are awesome! They definitely do well in our climate!

I'm looking to buy a cow calf pair.
Do you have any for sale or know someone who does?
Thanks.

Just don’t like the horns. Aberdeen Angus are small and polled- no horns.
Fortunately for us our new bull is homozygous polled and 4 out of our 5 girls are polled! I love how they look, but am going to be staying away from horned in the future!
Thank for sharing! I didn’t know this.
PLEASE DONT EAT THEM!!!!!!!!!
We will not be eating these girls!
