Great video. I have been researching scanners and watching videos. This had the most straight forward explanations of the process for armatures. I am going to pull the trigger on the 8200i AI to get the dust removal and color calibration.
Discovered you today. I've been putting my toes back in the film waters after 30+ years, the last 15 shooting digital professionally. Finding a scanner that allows my digital post-processing workflow would be huge so that the film output could still be used in my publication. Thanks for opening my eyes to some new ideas.
Great video comparison. I've been using NLP with a Plustek 7400 scanner for the past couple of years and am mostly happy with the results. It's definitely not top-end lab quality but it's good enough for posting online. However, I've often wondered if NLP results would better with a higher-end scanner.
I can tell you, for 35mm, my epson v600 struggles, but is amazing for medium format-enough so that I’ve had some 11x15 inch prints accepted for art exhibits. I’m looking at the Plustek 8300i for possibly my 35mm solution
Honestly this scanner looks far better than what I get from the Fujifilm lab in our area. My scans from the lab looks like the photo was printed on canvas cloth.
Partly why your image isn't appearing sharp is you're scanning above the scanner's effective resolution. You're making a bigger file but capturing no extra detail. When you zoom in 1:1 you're actually zooming further which will give the illusion of a softer image.
You didn't change colors at all in post, right? And still the colors of her jacket are wildly different between the images. Which is showing the correct color? That thing about the dust removal.. Yeah I didn't even think of that. Might hold off on buying a scanner until a 8200i turns up used somewhere.
I would be interested to see a comparison between an analogue developed film from back in the day, and a re-scan of the same negative now in digital. Because if modern scanning is inferior, whats the point? And doesnt tuning the scans in the digital realm negate the point of shooting on film in the first place?
For my taste, on the side-by-side demonstration the Silverfast gave a much better colour representation and sharpness compared to NLP. Obviously, you could start tweeking NLP to match that, but, as you stated, it was a test of the 'default/basic' output of both. Why would I want to do the extra processing in NLP just to equal the same 'basic' output of SF? I'd much rather just be getting on with the next scan.
I have an older Canon scanner it's a flatbed, I believe the number is 9050F or something like that. I believe it's a 2004 model. It only work with systems up to Windows XP. Mine is no longer usable because my XP kicked the bucket. Windows 10 will not work with it. I'm wondering how this scanner compares with my old one.
@@Bluewave42 I don't know what that is. From the internet I've found there is no workaround for the issue. It didn't work with Vista, but it worked with '98, XP and XP Pro. Works with anything but Vista or W/10 or later changes to it.
@@randywl8925 Access Compatibility Mode by Right-clicking on the Canon scanner software, click Properties. Go to Compatibility tab, try running the Troubleshooter first. If no joy, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select a Service Pack version of XP to try. However, it could be some USB/Twain driver communication problem. Have you ever tried uninstalling the scanner software and reinstalling? The Canon Europe website does list Win 10 drivers/software for the 9000f model and I wonder if that might work with the 9950F. VueScan may be worth trying if none of the above works.
Good video but not sure I followed all the steps. Moved pretty quickly. But maybe I am a slow learner. :) Is this scanner one that you believe will provide "professional results" for possible future large prints?

So, did you get it and what are your thoughts on it? I'm also debating getting one. Complete Amateur here!

Under the color tab in NLP you can choose between manufacturers (Kodak, Fuji, Cinestill, etc). It’s a massively powerful tool that many miss
I have the 8300i and it is fantastic. The software is very good.

I was also curious about what the jacket color is in real life and if any of the scans were actually close in that regard.

Great video, I find that the Silverfast is actually really good, it seems like with either one you can tweak to get the best 'setting' for yourself!
Hello, do you know if the Silverfast software works with the latest versions of Mac OSX (Ventura)?
Impossibile to install Plustek drivers.
On Windows 10. Sent it back.

Great review - Thanks!

What/how do you store your files on? Do you stick with physical storage drives or do you use a cloud service?
The plustek is outstanding for mono but poses significant challenges with colour.
Do you recommend epson 850 pro or plustek 8200i ai ?

Really useful - Cheers!
Plustek 8100 won’t restore the dots and scratches for you, that’s the most frustrating thing for me.
Just FYI, there's a negafix section in silverfast where you can which kind of film you are scanning :-)
*Naked Exposure* I wanted to see the scanning speed...
"dust removal"...LOL, in the dark room we call it "blow compressed air on the negative".
Trop de blablabla...
