- The first-degree murder trial for a Brampton, Ont., man accused of setting a fire that killed his mother-in-law is ending. The incident almost ended the lives, too, of his wife, three children, and father-in-law
As Global News reporter Catherine McDonald explains, Helder Verdentes-Arruda’s lawyer told the jury his client is not guilty of murder.
The reasoning? Because he was suffering a “substance abuse psychotic disorder” at the time and didn’t know the consequences of his actions.
