  • A short video of Ip Chun performing chi sau with sifu Shaun Rawcliffe and a few others (who I don't know the names of, sorry) at the first ving tsun conference. I hope the people in the video don't mind me posting this, I'll take it down if it's a problem with any of you guys. This is uploaded without permission but with epic respect for their skill and contribution to the art. Sifuchen.

    2:05 - when you try so hard to dominate an old man with aggression then get smacked on the nose for it. Adding tension clearly made it more possible for Ip Chun to sense the strikes and openings, amazing exhibition of composure by the old master.

    Great video! I learned much from that. It is amazing that Master Ip Chun retained this much sensitivity, reflex, footwork etc at age of 70+. This is a great example of how Wing Chun helps you to understand your body through very simple exercises.

      I'm not a "hater" but, with all due respect, nobody's "fighting" in this video, I don't think anyone in history has ever "fought" like this. As my Wing Chun teacher told me to begin with, chi sao is not fighting, it's an exercise to develop attributes that can be helpful in fighting.

    • @solus161

      the caveman the exercise is to develop the sense through one’s arms in CQB, to control the situation, not for offense. Think that this system is limited to this exercise is total ignorance. A open minded disciple could adapt Wingchun to various styles, if he get the very core, the basic concepts.

      @@solus161 so funny why would you put yourself in the situation like this with this old man playing arm tricks if you could just jab him, leg kick elbows and knees.

    • @solus161
      @solus161 4 роки тому +2

      @@rosenamajunas1159 this is just an exercise, a contest where people compete in defined skills. But it requires fine motor nerves and good footwork to not getting overwhelmed, meaning it's easier to avoid/negate/block jab, kick, elbow etc. What looks like to you (two men swinging their arms) is one stress testing other opening for strike. But if your opponent is way bigger than you, that's another story. In my country, wingchun, and all other varieties are taught to police forces and their wingchun could be different. Masters like Ipchun are like textbook, and instructors learning from them could develop their own varieties.

People, like he said, it's a drill called Chi Sau. It is NOT sparring. It's ultimately not even competition. It's all about helping each other learn sensitivity. It is Wing Chun philosophy to train in the most realistic manner possible without anyone getting harmed. The fact that some of these guys are really going for it only further underlines Yip Chun's skill.

    Chi Sau is a training game. The game part is trying to get your opponent to make a mistake and thus create an opening. The training part is in developing the sensitivity in (not just) the arms and wrists. As this develops with practice, the opponents intentions can be felt early as well as reactions speed up now that the arm no longer has to wait for the eye to relay signals to the brain. No hits are counted and no score is kept as the practitioners are really trying to help each other.

  • @krisMedicine
    @krisMedicine 12 років тому +1

    What this training adds to the Kung Fu is an increased ability to counter and deflect and a much more instinctive way of applying techniques. The actual striking is left out for obvious reasons. It does seem counter intuitive in the very beginning, but it very quickly animates the "static" techniques learnt in the forms.

    Having spent a lot of time for video of Ip chun, he is only a man with his famous father'name and , in fact, does not know how to perform " principle of wing chun". Furthermore, he only can practise his wing chun form to be similar as wing chun execrise. If you go through another style of wing chun in China, I guess that they are much better than his style . At least , they know how to use power from their waist and horse strand is more stable than him.

    I have been lucky enough to witness lots of great chi sau, but the opening of this film where Ip Chun chi saus with Sifu Martin Brierley shows more usage of Wing Chun's energies and minute angles in such a short space of time, it is a mind blowing example of high level Kung Fu. It's apparent these two have practiced together for many years. What do you guys think??

  • @thehopoman
    @thehopoman 11 років тому

    you are right in a couple of things...but bruce realized that some styles are more dominant than others..he learned ho to wrestle ho to box kickboxing proabably would have learned muay thai and bjj if he had the chance..thing is you think of mma fighters as grapplers when we actually prepare for all aspects of combat, i mean only dumbasses would go for a takedown in a bar..you get kicked in the head, but you can use boxing kicking knees elbows maybe even clinchfigting..thats what people forget

    unless you know wing chun and its philosophy and the basics and if your a master in any arts it doesnt matter, wing chun is a great art just like any other so unless your a master and I'm referring this comment to Reefa Rollin you are in NO position to talk down on wing chun or any arts. you would get your ass handed to you quick and I would be more then willing to be that person so hopefully you dont like in Iowa.

  • @thehopoman
    @thehopoman 12 років тому

    thats the thing, these guys try to adapt to the threats other martial arts give from wing chun perpective, while you have hybrid styles that actually go and seek a wrestler to learn how to fight a wrestler, they learn boxing from a boxer, submission from luta livre and bjj, throws from judo, close quarters combat from muay thai...you seek to be formless and have as many useful tools you can get, when you see that chain punchers get caught with a jab, you learn to jab! not to chain punch savvy?

  • @thehopoman
    @thehopoman 12 років тому

    They tend to think that their opponent will stand there and let them do those things! i mean, they trap the hand and pull it back and then strike like 100 times with their chain punches, my question is..what makes you think they guy is still going to be there or that he isnt going to go for the shoot or for the clinch..or if he knows how to box he knows how to fight in close, or if he knows muay thai he can fight in close as the training in MT teaches them, elbows knees advances clinch grappling

  • @krisMedicine
    @krisMedicine 12 років тому

    All styles have borrowed from, and improved upon what had come before. Some styles are "complete" because to add to more techniques would ruin the concept. Some styles are "open" because they are quite literally, open to anything. When one strives to reach perfection in anything, it becomes an art form automatically. It doesn't matter what style. MMA on tv is definately a sport. But in the gym, it's all about your attitude.

  • @ASWashington
    @ASWashington 12 років тому

    @SkemeKOS MMA is a sport, not a martial art. It is comprised of various martial arts. Something Bruce Lee did with his journey into the study of martial arts, outside of his base art of Wing Chun. MMA is more a system of what works best for the ring against sport competitors. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that these guys aren't fabulous fighters/martial artist, but MMA itself is not a martial art.

    @TheTweak0r I trained and taught for years. I've nothing personal against Ip Chun, of course, but know that some masters and even grandmasters are by no means as good as their students say. If you must know, every time I post a negative comment about Ip Chun, I hope someone will convince me I'm wrong, even a little... By the way, I know people who have trained with him and confirm my impression. They also say his brother, Ip Chin, is more skilled and has a deeper knowledge of Wing Chun.

    Why argue? just see love, see truth, and embrace all things as beautiful. Its not about who's or what's the greatest, we are all equal its not about violence, its a spiritual path, discipline self control. Spirituality and the mind will always over weigh the physical being the physical being ends the mind however does not. Bruce lee had a great mind, ip chun also.

  • @krisMedicine
    @krisMedicine 12 років тому

    Wing Chun theory states that all kicking has an inherent weakness in that one leg must be removed from the ground which considerably diminishes the effectiveness of the stance (this is a fact). However, the longer range and increased power of the legs when compared with the arms (hands) means that no complete martial art can ignore kicking.

  • @Weic6383
    @Weic6383 12 років тому

    @erbake In Wing Chun, there is only low kicking.... thigh, knee, and the point between knee and feet... Wing Chun doesnt involve of throwing but it has many ways to prevent from getting thrown... Wing Chun is a kung fu that involves attacking and defending at the same time.... Everything is about timing, speed and accuracy... and of course reaction time...

  • @krisMedicine
    @krisMedicine 12 років тому

    The theory is that it's much better to disable an attacker before they touch you so practice time would be wasted learning complicated throws. I think WIng Chun theory is nigh on perfect but to be the ultimate fighter, you'd probably need to know a few throws. :)

    WC, as any other Kung Fu style, greatly improves ur physical and mental condition. It might only seem that we are not improving ourselves in physical way, when practicing, but actually every WC technique affects ur body and spirit in a nice way. U can call this vital points and energy flows, and all this stuff, or you can operate more modern terminology. In any way, I would tell u that it works well) And btw, WC attacks improve and utilize muscles which are not simple to see on human body :)

    Internal arts don't guarantee longevity, but they do require the practitioner to be relaxed. That's probably more to do with their longevity more than the specifics of the style, stress is well known to affect health after all. Any exercise is good exercise, though, and if you're eating healthily as well as being positive and unstressed, you're likely to live a long time :)

    Got the whol show, ip chun isn't in much of it, but Shaun does a fun and cool demonstration of wing chun vs some thugs. I may upload it but will need his permission first so I don't get my ass handed to me at the next assessment :p

    ไม่ได้ดูถูกมวยจีนนะ..ถ้าการต่อสู้ในชีวิตจริงมวยจีนมีแค่นี้...ผมคิดว่าถ้าเจอ มวยไทย..ไม่รอดแน่..มวยไทยใช้ในชีวิตจริงได้แน่นอนเห็นผล..มวยจีนท่าทางสวยงาม .แต่ในขีวิตจริงมันใช้ไม่ได้

    @erbake He looks intimidated coz he's a foot shorter than everyone else lol. There are no kicks or throws because throws aren't the focus of this style (which is a weakness), and kicks at that range aren't the ideal attack. Better to keep balance and rely on structure and hand techniques.
