I’m a second degree in TKD and blue belt in BJJ. I took Wing Chung for 2 years and it, to me, is the most beautiful of anything I’ve done. I don’t care about what’s better in a fight etc. I was the most emotional and motivational of any art for me. I’m also retired LEO and I can can say that I used it a few times to my advantage.
Over the past 40 years that I have been in the martial arts I cannot tell you how many times I have seen the tricks of various masters. They are fun and impressive, but when I began learning jiu jitsu 16 years ago I realized that these demonstrations are rarely applicable in real time against an aggressor who knows how to fight. We see this over and over again when various martial artists challenge jiu jitsu practitioners. Having taken Wing Chun myself under a wonderful master instructor, I have a great appreciation for the art, but it's important never to get so full of yourself without testing whether your tricks and techniques will really hold up. When someone grabs you and wrestles you to the ground then all the punching and kicking expertise in the world goes out the window.
you seem to be quite narrow minded even after 40 years of doing MA. MA is not about "style vs style" challenge per se to start with. You seem to live in fantasies created by movie industry and video games. "real fighting" means that there are no rules at all. No need to win one-0n-one hand to hand combat to start with. There are weapons out there to deal with any skilled fighter, friends who may help etc.
For me, Wing Chun seems to only be useful against a person who’s not trained in ANY other fighting arts. It looks stiff and seems to be really upper body dependent. Punches also don’t look like they have enough power to knock someone out, as it seems there’s no lower body/hip movement used to generate power. I think 6 months of boxing lessons would be more useful in preparing someone for a street fight vs trying to use wing chun. In boxing, You will learn combos that work, defense, foot movement, develop stamina, learn how to take a punch the right way, and learn how to generate real power. Actual sparring and heavy bag use will also increase your strength and skills dramatically in a short period of time!!
Right, "for you" :-) Just to say, the movement of the lower body... the rotation, is essential in wing chun, as you told: to give power. Maybe you don't have seen it in this video, but trust me: very small but useful rotation
You have some valid points here. As a longer term practitioner of wing chun I do recognize the points you’re making. First of all I’m not very taken by this so called master/sifu. Anybody can open a school and call himself whatever master he wants to be and you tube is full of them. Wing chun is quite popular nowadays so you tend to get loads of folks presenting themselves as being teachers of the highest rank. In fact there’s ment to be a lot of wall bag training involved to generate short distance power and developing a punch which is supported by the stance i.e. the hips. Also, for a powerful, punch you need to train the heavy bag a lot by puching the bag to a 45 degree angle in front of you. This will force you to use your hips during punching and generate power. These facts are never shown in youtube clips, people are always busy with the fancypancy hand stuff (and being bad at it) and neglect the obvious. Also this master is completely unaware of his hips, a good stance and the right distancing and footwork that comes with it. Wing chun is a close combat system and making your opponent feeling uncomfortable by closing the distance is key. Wing chun is most vulnerable at kicking and jab range so footwork is essential.
Each martial arts has a weakness, but tbh the biggest weakness isnt the art itself. It's the way its taught, have you realised every wingchun video you see, its always an old man or some scrawny dude getting his ass kicked, its because its always about art and technique and they don't fight or hard contact spar. Also I guarantee you, a well built athletic guy using wing chun will do very well and there is video evidence of it. 2ndly most of these schools is about technique but they dont fight or spar, if you watched videos wing chun users who actually do hard contact, they know how to take a hit and actually fight with the techniques. There was a video where a hard contact wing chun user did really well in MMA fight and i read a comment that sums it perfectly. Most WC users have been playing against those easy, med, hard bots in computer games their whole life and when they fight a real person they just get mopped, another analogy was I can swing the tennis racquet with most perfect technique in the air 10,000 times but If I never swing at a real ball coming at me, I'm still going to suck at tennis.
MMA is superior of course (when it comes to real life combat), but honestly, you guys are getting on my nerves. You are everywhere now. It became a trend to shit on things like this. Stop comparing fucking everything with MMA.

The Martial Arts is not just about kicking someone's ass in a real fight. It's an art form. It's technique. It's beauty and harmony for the body, mind, and soul. You people who like to mock the origins of Martial Arts by trying to compare it to modern day MMA are just immature in the mind. It's like, no duh a machine gun would take out a martial artist. Does that mean nobody should bother learning martial arts and just learn how to use a gun? No. MMA is a combination of the great fighting forms. It's origins in large part come from the grappling arts like Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Akido, Hapkido, and other striking forms like TKD, Karate, Kung Fu, Kick Boxing, and of course greco roman wrestling. You shouldn't be shitting on the forefathers of MMA. You should be honoring them because they are what brought forth MMA. The sad thing is that western capitalism has largely turned the beauty of martial arts into a combative entertainment industry which it wasn't originally intended for. It's primarily the art of combat, not just beating someone up. With no skill, I could take a frying pan and knock you out but I'd still be the clueless idiot undeveloped jock who has learned and gained nothing in life. Martial Arts is about confidence, harmony, balance, peace, and having both skill of the body but skill of the mind and character, too. Most modern MMA fighters are just idiots who have been given the training and the skills of the Martial Arts but have no character or wisdom to wield it. That's why so many of them have messed up lives, criminal records, anger issues, mental issues, physical and health problems, and basically, fucked up lives. It's basically like imagine giving a jerk off kid the infinity gauntlet and he puts on and now he can kick everyone's ass. Does that mean he's the greatest? No. He's just a fool who has been given the powers of the infinity gauntlet. Take it away from him and he's nothing. But a true martial artist is one who has the wisdom and character to wield it properly. Take it away from him, and he's still a master, master of himself, his own fears, his own will. Being a victor in life is not who is able to KO someone else or make them tap. It's mastering your ownself. Case in point, look at Jon Jones and Conor McGregor. These fools have been given the power of Martial Arts, but they have no control over themselves and their own immature wreckless character is destroying them......classic example. Mike Tyson was a wreck, too as a young man. It wasn't until he became older in his years that he has now finally gained wisdom and the power and control over himself...but in his prime, he was just a frightened kid who had the ungodly power to knock people out, but his life was in ruins and shambles. This is not respectable and not what you would want to teach others to be like. Tyson himself today hates who he was as a boxer. He dislikes that part of his life and knows that while the world feared him and worshipped him, he was just a frightened, messed up and angry powerless man.
