Is photography all about gear??? Or is it about the photographer?

- Whenever I hear the question "Is photography all about gear", professional photographers tend to get mad and like to reply "photography is about the photographer".
How important is the photographer really? Wolf Amri will deal with that question and give you examples to confirm his theory in this photography equipment talk.

You're always so encouraging, Wolf, that you're top of the line as a coach or a teacher. Your videos have brought my photography a great distance, and I just bet many others would say the same thing. The world needs more, Wolf's.
Wow, wa do, Jo 🤗🤗🤗
This might be the best answer ever got. Am a beginner and always I was wondering why don’t i get what others shoot. Doubted my skill rather then gear. Now I know.. thanks for honest answer.
Great to hear that, Akash! Gear matters and it would be unfair to people with not so great gear to say the opposite 😉.
Thank you for this video and breaking the taboo.
I stopped photographing for 5 years because I was frustrated that I had outgrown my 600d that I bought at that time. For a while it killed my desire to take photos because I simply wanted more than what I had and I didn't enjoy the results I was getting.
Now that after many years I have the finances, I bought an R5 and I am so happy that I can finally photograph what I want and get the results I wanted.
(ofc. I didn't needed high end gear but once I tried it I could't go back and wanted to wait for big guns rather than settle with something in between)
I'm not a professional photographer, but I have a good knowledge of it because of the work I'm currently doing, and I'm getting more and more eager to turn things around to professional photography.
I think it is important for many people especially enthusiast to hear this and not lose their morale that they are the problem, but that at some point it is what it is with cheap equipment.
What I appreciate about my first camera is that I learned what my habits are and what type of photography appeals to me. When you understand what you want, the only thing that is left is - get that money for something better, it's not you 😁
Thank you! I wished most professional photographers wouldn’t have such a big ego 😂.
Beside that using entry level gear every now and then would open their eyes too 😁.
Another excellent video! Finally, someone who says honestly and without fear what no one says to the beginners. Thx, Wolf Amri!
Thanks, Ionut 🙏
What an unbiased explanation ❤️. Photography requires investment, patience and practice. There’s no shortcut to things in life including learning a skill.
What you pay is what you get and there’s some truth to it when it comes to photography. Better gears also help u to learn efficiently & practice is key to better photos! We have to see these as a whole not independently.
Thank you Wolf! More content please 💪🏻😬
Thank youuu 🙏🙏🙏.
@@wolfamri would you ever consider doing a shoot that covers different categories (food, product, portrait, landscape, action shots eg.) that features your recommended setup for each scene someday? Equipment and willingness to learn is one thing, but having a good teacher is hard to come by!!🤣🤣😬😬
I got a Canon 1100D recently and borrowed a broadcast lens from friends at a TV studio. It is about the gear because the kit lens doesn’t allow me to zoom in as much but it’s also about photographer because it was a fully manual setup (except AE and AWB). I still managed to get a few good shots with it.
Exactly my thoughts. Too many people say it’s just about the photographer, which is just arrogant 😁.
WOLF - this was brilliant!!! Thank you so much for posting this - real wisdom for beginners / prosumers and those trying to learn. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful, George! It is what it is 😉
Brilliant video. Perfectly presented, exactly right in its analysis of the equipment/photographer combo. Wolf, I think you're the best photography guy on here.
🤗🤗🤗 Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Sage advice. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.
Thank you 🙏🤗🙏
Clear, concise, accurate and informative. Another quality video Wolf!
Much appreciated feedback, Adam 🤗!
Love this!!!! Your down to earth approach to the photography topics is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for auch a great feedback, Pedro 🙏
Thank you I love the videos, as a amateur photographer who only shots with vintage manual lens on fuji. I've learned a lot from you starting with a x-t100 to a x-t2. Gear is a good part of the capacity, bit fundamentals and creativity is the other half.
Thanks so much, Liam! I totally agree 😉.
Great info! Thanks!
Thanks. Miley 🙏
Hey Wolf, great video as usual. I teach sports photography and I regularly have to give aspiring sports photographers the bad news that if they want to obtain the same professional results as the images they see in sports media, they're going to have to buy better gear (even if it's older and used!) Their budget camera and kit lens will only take them so far. My primary advice is to obtain better gear in stages. Get good with what you have. Then, when you've outgrown it, move on to the next level.
Thanks, Jack! So true, particularly with sport. Of course there is much more to a great sports shot than just the gear, but without the latter, you are almost lost for many scenarios. Keep up your goid work 👍😉
Great video mate!
Thank you, Jens 🙏🤗🙏
Wolf-like always you hit it on the nail. thank you
Thanks fot your continued support 🙏🤗🙏
I would say both... Got the skills need tools to match up with. Got the skill? Then you can try out the past tools or the moment tools...
Awesome!!
Thank you, Monica 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Awesome!!!!
Thank you, Yanni!
A few months back I got a brand new Sony a7ii gifted. I was excited but I was missing the eye AF-C, and some other fancy tools that newer cameras like the a7iii has. Also I was complaining about the kit lens.
Now I understand the gear was not the problem. The problem was me being a noob looking for the newest and best equipment while I had no clue on how to properly expose my images or how to get the maximum out of my equipment.
The equipment matters, but you must have the level to make it worth
Thanks, Mark. Focus speed and accuracy is one of the most important things in photography IMO. About 5-6 years ago, we changed cameras and that dramatically changed the amount of images that are in focus. Back then we were shooting professionally for 10 years already. Knowing your gear in and out definitely helps, but a cam with a few AI algorithms helps just as much 😉. But I also like to get the best out of not so great gear.
Thank you for the great and informative video Wolf. I approach life knowing that what we do is situational and with this in mind when I first heard someone say photography is about the photographer it made no sense to me.
Thanks, Ab! I couldn't agree more 👍
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for your support!
Wow!! Five thumbs up!!
Thanks so much 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thank you! Very useful
Thank YOU 🤗🙏🤗
Another amazing video.!!!!!
Thanks, Michalis 🙏🙏
Great video, thanks for Sharing
Thanks for watching 😉
love your course so much, ❤❤❤ really helpful teacher
Thank you so much, Katie 🤗🤗
Great vídeo, as always.
Thanks a lot!!!! 🤗
I really like your funny approach to the great videos you have made.
I also appreciate that you speak the truth about anything actually...
You give a simple and clear explanation that a newbie ( and foreigner) like myself finds really easy to understand.
Any chance to have one of yours video about sunrise set up and tips?
Thanks a lot for all your work.
Really appreciate it!
Thank you so much, Diego 🙏 Great idea for a video 👌👌
Excellent video to watch for any aspiring photographer
Thanks for such a great feedback 🙏
@@wolfamri The following question might seem foolish. But it would be great if it's clarified!! "why is it not possible to use a single large photodiode instead of millions of pixels?" Is it possible to post a video on that if it's not a bad question ?
No foolish questions ;). Did you watch my video about RAW vs JPG? I explained a bit how digital images are captured. So that might answer your question better than I can explain in words. One diode can only measure the brightness and not even the color. But maybe the future holds something much better. I wish I had an idea how to do that - might make me rich one day 😁.
Great 👍
🙏🤗🙏
Loved this
Great to hear that, Valerio. Thanks for your feedback!
Great video again Sir,i totally get the point and agree with you 💯
Thank you 🙏🤗🙏
You need specific gear for specific things but beginners tend to focus too much on equipment instead of learning photography. That's why I still say: gear does(n't) matter.
The right gear really makes things much easier. I have done that 9 camera entry level camera test and trust me, we advanced photographers really have no idea how limiting beginner gear can be in many ways. Plus, lighting without lighting gear is very limiting too. The list goes on and on 😉
@@wolfamri I know and as I said: There are many good reasons for good equipment for someone who knows how to use it and has a need for it. But not for a beginner who thinks he gets better photos with better gear automatically (which often is the case)
But you usually do get better photos with better gear automatically. What you don’t get automatically is good images with better gear. But we are probably thinking the same with different words 😉
THANK YOU.
Thank YOU 🙏🙏
Love your vids, thanks
Glad you like them, Steve. Thank you!!! 🙏🙏
Hell yeah!!
Do you have a video about astonishing images made out with entrance equipment?
It depends on what you feel is astonishing. But my Covid boredom fighting videos were done with entry level equipment. For the apple video, I even used an iPhone 8 😉
It's about the light. Always the light.
I couldn't agree more. But that does neither rule out gear, nor the photographer ;)
Thank you 🤩🤩😊
Thank YOU 😉
Well said 👍
Thanks, Sami 🙏🙏
You are too damn underrated! Whatta great explanation!
Thanks so much, Mohammad. I really appreciate that!
sehr nett! danke!
Danke auch 😀😉
This video makes me feel good about myself basically I am an amateur because I have amateur gear! lol or maybe not... idk... btw thanks for liking my posts on insta.
That was my goal with this video. Too many people blame themselves, that is not correct. 😉
Yes, photographer & the equipment. But you know, the reason many state it is about the photographer is because there is a myth that if you buy expensive pro kit it will make you instantly a world class photographer. This is not the case, if it were, no one would watch your tutorials, they'd just buy more kit 😉
Thanks, Michael, that would be really bad 😂. But I think that really is a myth. In my 75.000 member facebook group, the vast majority says it’s only about the photographer. Even for so easy things like moon shots, where it’s 90% about gear. So personally I feel that myth is the exact opposite.l 😉
The truth is always in the middle 😊
absolutely! 😉
It matters not if you are a amateur, what matters is having fun. Professionals on the other hand need the latest and greatest, a pro is well paid for their work and should provide the best quality possible.
But gear makes photography more fun too. Just think about lighting gear for portraits vs no lighting gear. I don’t want to talk people into buying more gear. I only want them to not necessarily get frustrated, if they don’t always get the results they have in mind.
@@wolfamri I agree about the lighting, photography is light painting after all. As a side note budget lighting option that is often overlooked are LED grow lights, they come in various wavelengths and are extremely bright for the money. As a amateur photographer you have taught me a great deal and saved me lots of money, thanks.
Funny you say that. I use LED growth lamps for most of my videos. I bought them for timelapse work, but when I experimented with lighting, I found that they did a great job at separating me on the green screen from the background. I'm looking for other options though, because I look right into them and I'm not sure how much UV light they send out.
Thanks for your feedback ;)
Schurli I am not arrogant. I need a startracker 🤩
You surely do - but it has to be Burli 🤣
@@wolfamri 😂
The Pareto Principle comforts me .😄
😂 that’s what it should, Edward. Know the limits of your gear and use its strengths 😉
@@wolfamri Done🤝
Realy enjoyed this video! But at 3:25 : the kit lens image in my opinon looks way better because the blur does not add value to the photograph and the kit lens image tells more story. Als you can't compare car driving to photography because at the formule 1 the goal is to be best racer and photography is an artform. And what the best photographer in the world is, is less measurable because it is a matter of an opinion and you look less at who can shoot the fastest shutter speed.
Thanks, Daniel. Well yes and no. I‘m not so much a fan of calling photography an art form. In my country photography is considered a craft, and I have to say I feel that is more correct. But craft or not, everything is a question os taste. Regarding 3:25: I also had to shoot that at ISO 1000 on a crop vs ISO100 on the full frame. But yes, tastes are different. Thanks for your comment 🙏🤗
Hey Wolf ,
Thanks for sharing this. I have been following you since ages. After taking your photography course, my photography have improved a lot. I have a Sony A5100 which I have bought 2 years back, shall I buy a lens or replace the camera first? Also, please suggest one too. Just to let you know, I am just a hobby photographer.
Thanks for your support, Poulav. That's a difficult question. The a5100 is a great little camera, but alone that it is missing the viewfinder would make it difficult to use in my opionion. I used that cam in my 9 camera entry level camera test. Did you see that?
What do you mainly photograph and what would be your budget?
@@wolfamri Yes, I have seen that video too. I click casual portraits, landscapes mostly and little wildlife too. View finder is important which I came to know after going through your course and trying to implement the learnings. My budget would be upto USD600.
@@wolfamri Can you please respond to my questiosn, if possible? Thanks
Poulav, sorry, I missed your answer. It’s not an easy question. But in this case i‘d probably get a lens first. Depending on how much you would be able to save in the future, either a lens that would fit a full frame camera or a crop sensor lens. If you like portraits most, have a look at prime lenses between 50mm and 85mm. They are not that great for landscape or wildly fe though. Maybe check Sigmas lens lineup, they have some awesome stuff.
@@wolfamri Thanks so much for your response.
Hi there I currently own a Canon t7 but have the chance to swap it for the Canon 5d mk1 ! Is this a good idea or is the newer tech of the t7 enough to make up for the old full frame ?
Thanks
Hey Scott. I’d have to check on dpreview.com they have a fabulous ISO comparison tool. Not sure if the 5DI is covered though. What would you have to pay, and what about lenses?
@@wolfamri I currently only have the kit lens for my T7 and the 5d mk1 will have the 50mm f1.8 mk 2 included. Straight swap no cash.
Sorry, I totally forgot. Here is the link to the comparison:
I totally forgot that the original 5D was only 12mpix. That's not much really. I only ever owned the Mk II which had 21mpix, which is quite a difference.
So I guess, I wouldn't trade it.

@@wolfamri Many thanks for the reply and the link. I’m really torn and unsure what to do. The age of the 5d worries me for sure but how do you rate the Canon t7?
To be very honest, not really high. Did you check my camera comparison video? It really didn’t perform that well. 😬
Hey wolf as a photographer starting out I’ve had my heart set on buying the Sony a7iii but I’ve been swayed by people advising me to purchase a cheaper camera (Sony a6400) to begin with so that i can buy more lenses. What would you recommend even though I have the money to buy the a7iii.
Hey Rohan! That would depend on how quickly you can get lenses after your camera purchase. And also on what you photograph. Both are excellent cameras.
@@wolfamri I might have to wait a few months to buy another lense for the a7iii depending on the price to have enough money left over but I could get the kit lense initially . But I could probably buy another lense for the a6400 straight away along with the kit lense. And for now I’d like to the use a camera to promote my coffee shop, get into film making and record music videos for my cousin and to take pictures of anything I like.
Then I’d probably go with the a7III. Particularly the in body stabilization is worth a lot for video.
@@wolfamri thank you for the advice, much appreciated!
@@wolfamri which lenses would you recommend for video on a budget?
This channel is promoting new ideas (not new products) - hard to find this kind of philosophy these days.
Thanks, Lerssi! I try to give my best to stay objective. You commenting helps me stay independent. I really appreciate that!
For nature, and expected animals to be around, I would say 90% gear.
Yes, and yes 😂
@Wolf Amri You made an impressive video, can't really say it better myself! It baffled me once with a guy owning gear costing more than $33K USD gave an advice to one guy saying (iPhone is enough, no need to waste your money).😒
How can I make your channel bigger?
Thanks a lot for your support. If you can spread the word, that would be awesome! And I'm working on a website too - everything will stay free, but I give people the option to become a member so that I can send them Emails about new videos. So if you want to stay tuned, that would be really helpful ;)
@@wolfamri Always :)
It's BOTH the photographer AND the gear. There, I de-escalated the civil war.
😂👍👍
I will never be able to shoot an Ansel Adams photo with my Iphone 4, will I?
Yes and no. Ansel had very very basic equipment in todays standards.
More important is to learn Photoshop..
Well, not really. With the examples I showed, you wouldn't be able to do much in Photoshop 😉
@@wolfamri. I am speaking as a rule. I have expensive gear. Learning Photoshop much more valuable...
I would say it is equally valuable 😉 and it really depends on what type of photography you are doing.
@@wolfamri. Gear is limited by technology. Photoshop only limited by imagination.
what's important is the Indian not the arrow.
Did you watch the video, Nathan? An archer with a crooked arrow or a broken bow won’t hit the target either 😉
Well then, no weapons of mass destruction in Irak.
🤔🤷♂️
0/80 photoshop
Not sure I understand 😉
