John Stanier, the man who plays the drums in Battles regarding Game of Thrones: "its too complicated" ._.
The drumming in Battles is not complicated, his drum lines are interesting and go well with all the songs, but he doesnt play crazy stuff at all. I always thought his consistency is the thing that sets him above the other "average" drummers.
Fortunate enough to say I got to see him perform with Helmet. One of the most awesome and fun shows

As a huge Helmet fan and drummer, I've always enjoyed John's drumming. His chops are powerful and technical, to me , he has always stood out.

Absolute beast drummer. Syncopations, off time drumming on the up beats, destroys a high hat, everything. I still can't figure out how some of his transitions go.
FEEL. One guy that drops the groove right in the pocket! I had a rad one on one with him after a Mark of Caine gig...I rarely geek out but I did with him and he and I sat for at leat 30 minutes, just him and I and we talked all tings his drumming, ...SUCH A HUMBLE GUY. He plays down his influence, but his feel and the way he drops a groove and reads a groove is at the top of the game. Noting but love.
Dude is like New York personified, love it.
Stanier's style has influenced so many musicians... it's hard to measure.
Seems like a really cool guy. Made me laugh with the Game of Thrones stuff. I remember in high school being mesmerized by his intro in "I Know". That (and his style in general) has completely shaped and influenced my drumming since I started playing 20 years ago. Something about his style and drumming language really communicates to me. I'm really only familiar with his work on Betty and Meantime, but these albums, every note he hits is 100% on point. He knows exactly what the song calls for and plays it, a very difficult thing to do. Don't deny it John, you are one of the best.

Anyone who's ever put their music out to be critiqued by the public can relate. This guy is a monster drummer, he took the best of prog and the best of hardcore, one of the guys to truly pioneer a fusion of styles on his instrument. His dry sense of humour and low-key grumpiness makes me like him all the more.

Comes across as a more interesting drummer/musician than a person. I saw Helmet in Dec '94 and glad I made the effort on a rainy work night, b/c the show was great.
Not interested in Stanier as “a person”.. he’s a musician that’s all that matters . It’s about the work brother..everything else is social media nonsense. Why does every one want to know their favourite artists “personalities” these days? That’s why music’s gone down hill..too many “fans” into the cult of personality not music

Battles got their own thing going on but Helmet is legendary.
dude you can't be serious, Battles is one of the best and most interesting bands to come around in quite a while, meanwhile Helmet was never good or worth listening to.
