The ESEE 4 is my hiking EDC; small and light enough to have in my backpack but big and strong enough to do any bushcrafting/survival tasks I might need it for.
The thing about the Buck 119 is, even in my tiny, bony hands that look like facehuggers from Alien, it works fine because it's a pretty neutral handle and the finger grooves are super shallow. That way, it fits larger and smaller hands with no problems. I really dig the 119, I think it's perfect for what it is
The thing cuts like a lightsaber too. That deep hollow grind is so thin behind the edge...
It may not be a tank. But within reason it will do what you need.. but as far as cutting , it's a scalpel

I think you have some well thought out choices of fixed blade knives. What is interesting about peoples choices in knives really relates to their environment. Mostly it depends on climate and geographic land conditions. In the distant past it depended on what materials were available to make knives. If you are a collector of knives this is more of interest. Most times you buy knives for their appearance first and their purpose second. Then by using them you find out the good and not so good things about their design. If a knife has a dominate hilt that indicates a connection to knives use for combat. Like your KA-Bar and Buck. The others have less prominent ones toned down and less noticeable but, just as useful. Like the Geber and the others. Clip points look like stabbing blades but so are drop points just less noticeable. Missing in your choices is a spear point. This point shape is more versatile just not as good at stabbing as the others. The point is heavier and less prone to breaking if used to pry on things.🍻🦉

As a deer hunter my Buck 119 is a valuable tool that is always capable , it's ability to split the rib cage of a whitetail and remain sharp for skinning .

I own the Buck 119, the ESEE 4, and the BK9. All 3 are excellent knives but I grab my ESEE 6 more than any of them.
My Esee 6 was my go to for years...now it’s been replaced by the Tops Longhorn Bowie with custom kydex sheath...

Heard about bk9's breaking in half too many times for me to want one. I have a junglas too and I really like it, handle could be better though

You're probably aware that Buck is now offering their popular classic fixed blades, including the Special 119 in S-35VN with green canvas micarta. That takes their classic line of fixed blades to a wholly different level of performance over their 420HC blades. Prices in the States are very competitive too. ... Very much looking forward to your review of a new Buck 119 in S-35VN.
The problem is the price. In Italy the 119 420hc is 60€, the s35vn is 250€. It’s truly not worth 200€ more.
250€ is a custom price piece here in Italy, made in Magnacut/4V/Vanadis that outperform s35vn and it’s not even remotely close.
They should half the price of the pro series in my opinion, otherwise it’s truly not worth

I got the entire Buck cocobolo collection from 101-124 including a 117 Brahma over the years. I pull mountain bike inner tube over my kabars. I stopped buying knives awhile back. Between buck and kabar, got all options covered at reasonable prices. Then I got into collecting a few fiskars axes. Nothing expensive, reliable

I have to be fairly price compromised in my selection of outdoor knives, which I actually do use outdoors and living on acreage these are the ones that I bought for that purpose: Condor Terrasaur, Condor bushman’s parang and for processing meat an old hickory butchers knife. Oh and one more is a Mora Fillet knife. The Parang gets the most use, mainly in processing pine and hardwood for kindling. The most recent use was yesterday when I was hacking out an axe handle (just for some downtime) from an old walnut bed head that was being thrown out.
I like that value plays a key role in your thought process. Do you think the Strongarm could have won your heart the same way if it had been in the same price range as the Lionsteel T5 back in the day?

A man of culture. At least in Europe the Bradfords are priced very close to Esee, a bit of a head scratcher when one offers Elmax and Magnacut, while the other comes in 1095 and S35VN. Bradford is the obvious better choice. Another one hard for me to get are the TOPS knives, also in 1095 and priced like super steels.
I have the Buck 119 and it's really cool. I also recently purchased the Buck Selkirk fixed blade and it is wonderful. Next I want a few Kabars....7" USMC, Mark 1, TDI.

My 1095 essee 4 is My edc. Love it! If I spend the money again it will be the s35vn. Debated between the two the first time wish I had bought it.

G'day Pete, yeah all fantastic choices mate. Buck 119, Strongarm and BK-9 in particular, gotta say not necessarily premium, but bloody effective, comfortable and easy enough to sharpen in the field and look good do'in it IMO. So perhaps they are premium, ....especially for the dough in comparison to what others offer for a hell of a lot more moolah, for negligible capability. Cheers Duke.
Great selection mate...a dear selection but nice to see what you got on the list. I got......the Mora 2000/Kansbol (EDC belt knife), the Hultafors OK4/Mora Bushcraft Black (small,, light robust utility knives), the Mora 731 (my butchering knife of choice), the Mora 120 (crafting knife) and the Terava Skarma 200 and/or Skarma 240 (heavy duty bashing/camp knives)....that's five knives.
Any combination of the above could be picked up for less than 175 dollars. In my opinion (humble) the knife is a tool first and foremost and to be enjoyed as an item of beauty second.
Good choices. I have one of them, the BK9. I would add one more, the Ontario RD9 with that 1/4" 5160.
Love the COS steel much better than the 3g steel they have used in other knives in my opinion mine are still in VG-10 easy to sharpen holds a decent edge stainless just a great all around stainless steel. I have some 2 buck 110’s one in s35vn and one in 5160 and a 112 with micarta handles and s30v. I have never liked the buck 119 fixed blade but many so like it just not for me.
The only fixedblade i own is the one in my Victorinox Swiss Card lite ( if you would see it you would laugh), so it might be time for me to get a proper one.
Nothing wrong with that wee blade. I've kept a Swiss Card in my wallet for about 15 years, now, and use it regularly. You're not gonna baton with it ;) but it will do 90% of the task we use knives for. Check out the Leatherman KB, if you're looking for a well-made, hair-splitting sharp folder. The blade is only 60mm and I keep mine scalpel sharp just with stropping.
That Buck 119 is very similar to the knife from the mooovie Scream, it looks beautiful. Great selection of blades there, and well justified reasons too. Excellent video, best 8min 39sec of my weekend 👍🏻 Thank you

That's because the knife used in the movie Scream (the first one), was a Buck 120, the 119's big brother (same knife, just longer).

I love my buck 119 but my buck 124 frontiersman is far and away my favorite buck. Micarta handles make all the difference

While it might not make this list for you, I'm surprised you've never reviewed the Benchmade Bushcrafter. It has a fairly thick handle, much like the 119 (or Becker). And a blade style more like the Strongarm or F1. And the name is similarly ripe for parody as the apocalypse or space force.
Probably because of cost. Its American made and he lives in Australia. 200 in the US is probably 3-400 there.

Nice selection...I have the most fun with those “over built” blades. Still looking for a good stainless “Survival” knife similar to the Apocalypse in size...I finally broke down and place orders for a Chris Reeves Pacific and a Survive Knives new Tac 5.1. The waiting part sucks...feels like I’m on a Randle Mades knives waiting list...

Fully agree about the looks of the 119! It was my first nice knife - was love at first sight. I have better knives now, but it's still a really good looker!
I sold my Buck 119 and regret it. I won't buy another because I have several similar blades but Bucks sourcing and heat treatment are amazing. One could go into the woods with a Swiss Army knife a Sven saw, 15 or 21 inch and a Buck 119 and do fine. A machete for brush clearing wouldn't hurt.
I used the buck knife alot hunting. I ended up hand checkering the handle so it wasn't slick when your hands got wet.
If a person spends a lot of time hiking/camping/hunting & fishing I don't think spending 350-450 on an excellent fixed blade is unreasonable. Generally speaking, I think high end fixed blades are better values than high end folders because of the expected use. I was a little hesitant when I first dropped more than 150 on a fixed blade but in retrospect they've all had more than enough usage to justify the price. The whole thing really comes down to a person being honest with themselves about how they're actually going to use the knife.
Mine would be. ZT 0180, Chris reeves green Barrett 5.5, microtech mini alpha, cold steel srk 3v, cold steel srk c.
Used to get strongarm for $45 in USA, now they're around $80 I think.

You should check bout the OKC hunt plus camp knife. It is very low cost but high quality it really is a do everything knife

I just bought a LionSteel M7 that will do everything the TRC Apocalypse will do for 1/2 the cost! There is nothing the TRC offers to justify the cost over the LionSteel M7 for me personally!
Yes, the TRC is top notch and extreme quality, but man, that price point is nuts!
And yet people are fine with CRK, Busse, Spartan, Bark River or Hinderer fixed blades that cost even more than TRC because they are westeren made. Silly.
Cold Steel 80 TJDZ Jack Dagger thrower in 1055. Got one a month ago. $14. 99. No sheath, Wrapped the handle in bankline # 36 tarred. I have 14 Bark River, 8 Esse, 5 customs, Ka- bars, Beckers, Schrades, Cold Steels, Moras...etc. This Jack Dagger thrower will work 98% for any survival situation. I will be getting the Fallkniven A1X. in CO S next for $300. I still recommend the CS 80TJDZ !

Solid list and all are proven . I’ve killed a truckload of hogs with a buck 119 but these days my go to is the Esee 6 . I do need to pick up another 119 just to have but I think I’m going with S35vn version this go round .

Hey Pete, have you checked out the cold steel drop forged survivalist? It’s good because it’s strong, 52100, and pretty cheap for what it is.
Fällkniven R2 Scout is a perfect small EDC fixed blade.

Can't say I have a top 5. Mine are the MBK Fieldtrekker in 3V, the Cold Steel SRK in 3V, and the Hinderer Emmett in 20CV. I know 20CV is not ideal for fixed blades, but for me she is a EDC blade, unlike the SRK and Fieldtrekker.

ok so the outdoors gut hook knife if you can find it in the fix blade verryant is a cheep knife but it's also of h1steel witch is high rust resistant and as a sorta of every day style fix blade i feel you can still do worae then this though so not to shabby but not to great either run of the mill middle of the road knife

I have like 50 fixed blades running from moras from $12-$80 southern grind,Ontario,kabar,Enzo,Tops,LT Wright,battlehorse knives,Falkniven Benchmade,cold steel,Manly knives which I was very impressed with sharp spine sharp slicey Cpm154 steel iron wood handles for $100 can’t beat that CRKT,cold steel and a couple BRK blade The Bravo 1.5 in A2 great sheath green polished micarta handles but my favorite blade I have is the shorter BRK Kephart in 3v sharp spine fantastic edge guessing it’s a 4 inch blade very thin and slicey at .11 spine thickness but the 3 v helps make up for how thin it is with a very tough steel great leather sheath with a fire steel loop gorgeous curly maple handles with red liners pinned together and a lanyard hole if that’s your thing hard to choose because out of my 50 fixed blades their are 10 that are almost in a 10 way tie but the BRK and those beautiful handles pushed it over the edge by a hair but the LT Wrights and Battlehorse knives along with that manly patriot all pimped out it was close though if u want a beast is go with my Falkniven A-1 my bravo1.5 or my toughest monster knife my Blindhorse Lumberjack toothpick I O1 tool steel big belly sharp blade easy to share grippy micarta handles saber ground could baton almost anything 6 inches round and under sharp spine and could break down game like nothing almost a butcher knife but better because it has a tip and can carve but definitely not for intricate carving more like cabin building stools etc the bad part is they don’t make it anymore but is still out there on the internet for $300 or so which is what I paid before blindhorse broke apart and made LT Wright and Battlehorse knives and $300 is a fair price

@@greekveteran2715 I dont have the LT genisis the only flat ground LT I have is the North American hunter in Aeb-L a great knife isn’t as slicey as the patriots grind with that 15 degree edge I believe but probably a little more robust in the edge both are great game hunting food prep blades I’d guess it would fairly similar with the genisis flat grind it would be hard to choose I’d probably pick my manly patriot in cpm154 and something like my BHK Bushlore scandi in 01 tool steel as my two blades id pick bugout etc bushlore for bushcraft light batoning etc and the patriot for food prep game fishing though the patriot would do fine on it own.
@@barrybueler3356 I own the Manly Patriot in D2 for around 4-5 years! It's the most used fixed blade I own! My hands always go to grab that knife, even though I own almost all famous fixed blades and at least 10 custom fixed blades near that size! The Manly Patriot,is the reason I want to get the LT Wright Genesis in full flat grind! I want it, for that simple yet thicker handle it comes with. Thanks for the response!

Another excellent video dude! In your opinion, what is the toughest 4 to 5 inch stainless steel knife you have in your collection? Do you think the Gerber strong arm is tougher than the esse 4 in 1095 or s35vn or the Fallkniven f1x or s1x??? We all know cpm 3v is the toughest non stainless. But what is the toughest stainless. So much mix info on the net. Thanks
3v is not the toughest non-stainless steel, I mean 1v is in the same family and is considerably tougher. But 3v is definitely tough enough which is important haha. Something like 420j is probably tougher than elmax but who cares when it can’t hold an edge right?

Doubt you’ll be disappointed in that choice…. any trc around that size will serve you well! There are plenty of people that think the MC is their best design… I prefer the apocalypse but MC is s sweet knife!

Thanks for this video, I live in the US, and our soil is full of Granite. I’ve made a few stupid mistakes and run my 1095 into the ground; lots of chips. Wondered about the esee 4 s35vn. How hard is it to sharpen?
Its not too bad! These entry to mid level stainless powder steels do pretty well and are somewhat forgiving

That's how I literally just got interested in knives a few weeks ago.. looking at fixed blades. Was looking at the CRKT minimalist Bowie but didn't buy anything yet. Don't buy most things from CRKT. They use junk steel. All of us who start into knives begin with something like Gerber, CRKT, etc., and we all regret it once we know more. Be the better man, choose something that's long-term viable for when the affliction really hits. A good knife you could look at for a small fixed blade would be a Cold Steel Mini Pendleton Hunter. Or a BK 14, Esse Candiru or Izula 2. Or you could go the full super steel route, but those will make learning how to sharpen more difficult, and gaining fundamentals when you're starting is a desirable thing.
The Esee Izula is a great little fix blade to use and it’s tough and easy to sharpen
@@Butch_Deezlsteak is it actually D2 or is it the Chinese D2 that never really performs like D2? I will say they have one knife I think is cool and that's the Siwi. But for the most part it's Chinese crap made out of crap steels.
The knife the OP was referencing is 5Cr for gods sake, it's our job as people more into this hobby to help guide newer people and at least let them know that there are serious downsides to choices like that.
@@patricktakada9551 thx for the info. I will check those makes and models. Haven't even started yet with the sharpening aspect of it as far as learning. I've been researching folding knives for the past 2 weeks or so, and aside from being new to it there seem to be a lot of good options for those staring out and/or on a budget like myself. Knife Center is a pretty good channel and their site seems to have the best prices. A lot of people seem to the like the Ka-bar Dozier and the Ontario Rat 1 and 2. I'm all about US made and not a fan of anything made in China, if for no other reason other than general principle. I have no issues with makes from other countries. I just have a thing about 'made in China'. I know decent stuff is made there but when I see that it just totally turns me off. If I get into more seriously down the road I'll possibly spend more, but for me for now under $40 or thereabouts is it. Incidentally I discovered the Condor Bushlore in a video yesterday. They make a mini as well.
@@jastew1971 I own the full sized bushlore, as a blank I've been waiting to assemble for far too long. The mini has a lot of bad reviews. But the full-size seems great. I have a bunch of Condor knives and enjoy the ones I have.
If you don't like made in china, which is understandable, stay the hell away from CRKT because they do a lot of business there.
I'm no folding expert but there are a lot of good places to learn about them, especially this channel. Knife Centre is also great.
The Essee 4 in S35VN seems like a value at $130-150 USD

Buck 119 in S30V or 420HC? preference?
I have both, and have used both many times. I prefer the s30v, it holds and edge longer and is almost as easy to sharpen. BUT, there is nothing wrong with Buck's 420, in fact it's the best 420 in the industry due to their excellent heat treat, and I would not feel underequipped in the field if I only had the 420 version.
I am looking for a survival/bushcraft/self defense knife all in one. Have yet to find the perfect solution.

There is no such steel called 1095 Cro Van. The steel Ka-Bar makes their knives is Carbon V. It's properties are xloser to O1 rather than 1095. It's just marketing, like everything around us nowdays..
Couldn't find a Carother's knife video in your library. Ever tried them? Owner says their knives are practically indestructible unless using hammers and other toold purposely meant to destroy the knives. Pretty bold claims to me.
