You're about to see Meta release a new VR headset with Fresnel lenses in 2024.
People tend to overrate how much better pancake lenses are. I see a lot of statements like "never going back to Fresnel!". All Fresnel lenses are not equal though. And I think there's a lot of misattribution of aspects that are actually due to older panels rather than lenses.
At the end of the day, the lenses are only part of the optical stack. There are many factors that go into the overall display quality of a headset. It would be a mistake to automatically count out a headset just because it has Fresnel lenses.

With a small sweet spot from the fresnel lenses, what good is eye tracking ? When you look around it's gonna be blurry. dumb

There is NO WAY the trade off of the Fresnel Lenses is even close to worth it for a Display Port! I really want HTC to do well, but they just can't seem to get it right. HTC if you are reading this... go back to OLED and non-fresnel lenses please. Quest 3 is a MUCH better option at half the price IMO.
Psvr2 kinda looks preferable too, unless you were going to use pass through software to look at your flight controls, or the hand tracking.

Have you ever used a VR headset with OLEDs? I own a Quest 3 & a PSvR2 and I prefer the PSVR2 for PCVR. You sound like a salty gamer who only owns one VR headset.
For this price there should be pancake lenses.

Yeah, there is and they're called Pimax. And they are just as likely to send you a glorified door stop.
The G2 is still such a good headset, at least in terms of visuals. I got a PSVR2 to test on PC and I can tell you, the G2 is clearly ahead of it. The PSVR2 has mura and the sharpness is just one tier below. Colors and brightness are not that much better, only the blacks obviously. Sweetspot the same. The G2 has such good displays!

Sounds like what Pimax wanted the 12K QLED to be featurewise minus display resolution. Finally more standalone headsets! ....just hope we don't end up with too much 'exclusive' games/apps ecosystems...

I see your point, but, this also has eye and hand tracking, decent mixed reality pass through, standalone capability, active cooling and a sleeker form factor. If only it had pancake lenses though...

Like, the quest 3s is coming out with fresnel lenses but with less features than the quest 3. Why the hell can noone make an HMD, that just does it right in all areas. Every VR HMD has some strong points, and then fail at 2-3 points.

Yup. Completely agree. This is so annoying. You’d think there would be a company that would want to make a lot of money. Making a good overall headset would make insane amounts of money. Instead we keep getting these half assed headsets. I’m willing to pay a premium price for a light weight, high resolution, OLED, DisplayPort VR headset with eye tracking.

@@mikeserds2333 but Is it though? Q3 has incredible lenses. Just the resolution isn’t there. Surely they can create a highly resolution pancake lens. It will be more expensive, but I’m willing to bet people will buy it. Pimax makes good local dimming on the Crystal, but the quality of their headsets is a concern. Eye tracking has been figured out. Audio solutions have been figured out. We have headsets like Bigscreen Beyond to proof lightweight can happen. We just need a dedicated company willing to drop the funding needed to create an all around good headset. It will be expensive, but if it’s done right, people will buy it.
I’m debating on this headset or the Pimax crystal light. Which one would you suggest for Sims? My goal is better clarity to be able to see gauges.

Seems like an interim HMD step for HTC, to see if there’s a demand for it, then will bring out an upgraded version once they get the feedback from buyers. As you said, it’s a bit of a back step with fesnel lenses & an older screen set etc.
seems they got ythe feedback all the way back to vive pro, the lenses were basically the only complaint

I wish more companies would release index style controllers. That's the reason why I can't switch to anything else at this point in time.

I will never understand HTC. Fresnel lenses, XR2 Gen 1, regular LCD, but a Display Port for quality, compression-less PCVR.
Every headset they make, they seem to focus on a single high end feature to tout, be that resolution per eye with Vive Pro 2, form factor with the Elite, Display Port connectivity for this Focus Vision, and build the rest of the HMD with parts from 2018.
Unrelated, but could you please update your Meta Quest 3 videos? You currently have around 5 Quest 3 videos, but they seem a bit outdated. There are so many factors to consider when optimizing the experience: SteamVR, Meta Quest Link, Oculus Debug Tool, OpenXR Toolkit, Link Cable, Virtual Desktop, OpenXR, VDXR-each with tons of settings. Some even require restarting MSFS2020, which takes 5 minutes, just to test adjustments.
The more I learn and watch tutorials, the more overwhelmed I feel. An updated tutorial that breaks down the best current solution, comparing Link Cable vs. Virtual Desktop with pros and cons, would be incredibly helpful.

So I went from the HP Reverb G2 to Pimax Crystal and I have to be honest, this headset looks very appealing to me. Would I be a fool to replace my Crystal with this headset?
I'm all for more options on the VR market, so I'm very positive hearing this. Specs wise, the Pimax Crystal (esp. Light) seems to be a better offer, especially given the price point, but we have to wait for the hand on reviews.
The inside out tracking on the Crystal light is TRASH sent mine back.
Got my crystal light yesterday. Set it up and tried using it for just 2 hours. I’m returning it, same issues as many on Reddit have mentioned with geometric distortion, sweet spot tiny, not sure what they did with the FOV but I can see more in my G2??? No idea why. Also fitment not great, tilts side to side even when clamped down. Disappointed since the Reverb is gonna get bricked by MS at some point

What Meta should have, a direct cable to the GPU. Not sure I can go back to Fresnel lenses though. Price will be 2x more than it should, since it is HTC. I was actually surprised it was only $995.
Hopefully they test this headset to see if it stays on when plugged into the DisplayPort. Kinda wish Vive just stayed on the pcvr side. We need windows mixed reality alternatives.
Thinking of the PSVR2 and wondering that this doesn't have too much extra? Ok eye tracking, wireless mode but no OLED? And who the hell puts a fresnel lens in a headset nowadays? Can't see this going well.
Is that really confirmed, that you dont have to charge it whilst its used as pcvr, hooked up to your pc? Because that was my only thing i hated, having had only wired, none battery powered headsets?
PCVR never went anywhere. Very smart of them to come out with a stand alone with a display port. Not sure about the lenses but will wait for your hand on review :)
Well, it did go places but you have to be prepared to spend £3000 odd. Consumer VR has just stagnated, except maybe for the Quest 3 which (for the price) is excellent. Meta are the king of consumer VR at the moment.
@@richardnoall3758 I have been buying PCVR headsets every couple of years. I own a Quest 3 but rarely use it. It's my wife's now. I am 99% VR and use PCVR headsets. It never went anywhere. Yes it may have costs but anything high end does cost

While Pancake Lenses offer a better Sweet Spot they are terrible at passing light from the screen to the eyes including colour as colours are made from light. I've been back and forth between Quest 3 and PSVR2 on MSFS and while Q3 is sharper, the image is dull and lifeless.The PSVR2 is definitely softer but Way more lifelike, Especially during a sunset flight.Absoultely Stunning!But I agree an LCD Screen Must have Pancake Lenses in 2024.For the Sweet Spot and Clarity.

I am the opposite. I own the quest 3 and psvr2, the psvr2 bad persistence mean I have to drop the brighness to 25% to not get motion sick. at that point its dimmer than quest 3, with bad mura, and bad lenses. I prefer the image off the quest 3
You get persistence when using a PSVR2 on PC? I’ve never heard of that. Maybe on PS5 but not on PC. Weird.
Fresnel lenses, low-ish resolution, LCD panels without any local dimming,... last gen specs overall, sadly.
Other than cost savings, I don't know why they didn't go for aspheric or pancake lenses with the 2880x2880 QLED panels used in Crystal and VR1.

I have a Reverb G2. I do not want a pimax. I need eye tracking and automatic IPD adjustment, but I don't want to spend $1600 to have a super heavy headset with these. The Focus is much lighter. I also want really good camera passthrough, a complete package so to speak. I will be waiting your review.
LCD and Fresnel lenses at that price ! They're having a laugh !! As are most VR makers. Time for Meta to step up to the plate with a straightup no frills PCVR version of the Q3.

Great video, Steve! Long time fan, and an OG VR fan (DK1 -> DK2 -> Quest 1, 2 -> G2 -> Pico4 -> Quest 3 -> next?), and you have been a huge influence on my VR purchases. But it always strikes me - what is the advantage of DisplayPort? I'm a big nerd about this, and have a beast PC, but I just have a hard time understanding why DisplayPort is so high up on your priority list? Lenses, screens, comfort, FOV, and all the usual suspects I understand. But I just haven't seen or realized why DisplayPort is a factor when VirtualDesktop is so great (caveat: with the right router and pc setup).
Is there a way to create a video that helps us understand and value/appreciate why a direct DisplayPort is something we should be considering in a headset?
The advantage with DP is absolutely no compression in the picture. That means clearer visuals, better colors and no lag.

But honestly - show me high-ppd OLED screens + pancake/aspherical lenses + low-latency router + virtual desktop + high end pc and then tell me you quibble about a displayport connection 😉I'm being funny - I'm not a troll but I do care about VR but just - G2 had displayport and I'd take the Quest 3 or Pico 4 with Virtual Desktop over the G2 displayport any day - for the large sweet spot size and lenses and the screen density 💪

I'm finally going to give flight simming another go after upgrading my 1080ti to a 4070ti Super OC. I did briefly try X-Plane 11 a few years ago on my Valve Index but the performance was bad and I soon gave up on it. I now fancy trying Microsoft Flight Sim which is currently on sale for £30 on Steam but I know the new version is due for release in a couple of months and is supposed to have better performance so I'm not sure whether I should sit it out until then. I could maybe give X-Plane another try with the new graphics card and my Quest 3 while I wait but I remember it took a lot of tweaking to get it running and I'm not sure I want to go through that again.
Man, I have a Reverb G2, and with Windows 11 24H2 rumored to be releasing October 8 I feel I'm in a hurry for a new headset. But there's nothing immediately appealing right now, the Vive Focus Vision included. I would like to get Crystal Light (well, it wouldn't ship in time anyway), but it seems like there's so many QC issues from Pimax lately. I kinda feel stuck..
HTC does not understand that lenses are the most important part of a VR headset, even more important than the display.

Very nice headset.... But those Fresnel lenses are a deal breaker. I currently own the 1st HTC Vive and it is a decent headset, but the Fresnel lens blur is definitely frustrating. If I'm gonna spend £1k on a new one it unfortunately wouldn't be one with the same potential issues as the one I have now.

I am happy with my Reverb G2 right now, however I also know that I have to replace it later on. I am running MSFS on a RTX3080ti. (40fps) Do I have to upgrade to a new video board when switching to a new HTC or Pimax headset?

IMHO Pancake lenses despite compressed video gives an overall better end result than Fresnel lenses with direct video.

Absolutely true. I hope this thing sells like a homeless man’s shit in a bakery. These companies need to stop pussy footing around and deliver a high end oled (at least) headset. They got 90 percent correct with this one but the lack of oled or even fucking local dimming + fresnel is a deal breaker. And the worst is they’ll take it as there’s no demand for vr, when in fact there’s a huge demand for it, it’s just these headsets suck.

What headset are you using in the meantime? I had to return my PSVR2 on pc due to the annoying mura, despite the perfect blacks and colours.

There still isn't a G2 replacement for people in the southern hemisphere! Somnium don't ship and the Pimax range isn't available unless you wait two months. There needs to be a Quest 3 Pro for us down here to replace the G2.

Okay i get it old school lenses but should i really not buy it just for that when it has eyes tracking automatic ipd full body tracking face tracking with a hot swappable battery because i just play vrchat and it has it on standlone ive got the quest 2 when it was for pre order and same with quest 3 like i dont think just the lenses should be a reason not to get it for vrchat but what yall think also yes i think there will be the few people that say what if you play a new game and i will just once and not again most likey only gave ive ever played is vrchat and i dont really care for other games and i dont really care at all for pcvr

Fresnell lenses are bad, but the ones I've seen in the Vive headsets have been the absolute worst.
I still think the crystal light offers a better value proposition for me tbh

I've only used PSVR1, 2 and Pico 4 so far.
And what sacrifices would you make for increased FOV?
For me my issue is pixel density. I would rather have higher density than wider FOV. Because VR is so hard to drive, I'm not in a position where I can drive 2 x3k screens at 150% render resolution to get wider FOV 🤣
@@DanPyjamas I had only regular Crystals and 8KX so not many to compare. But I'm very happy with the quality. I'm using them for Combat Flight Sims so FOV is important to me.
I would keep the pixel density and make 8KX FOV in Pimax Super. That would be cool to me.

I got it. It’s as bad as fresnel sounds. Returning ASAP (great for people who have heavy glasses prescriptions) but if you have good vision it’s a waste of rendered pixels. Go for Quest 3
I'm just pissed theres no form of compatibilty with basestations. I understand the move away to standalone/inside-out tracking, but come on why is it treated like a sin to even consider some form of native lighthouse support.

The VR1 feels far more appealing but of course in another price range.
This headset would actually be extremely compelling if it didn't have those lenses. I actually would be somewhat okay with fresnel lenses on the level of Pico 3 Neo or Quest 2, but the Vive Focus 3/Vive pr 2 lenses are the worst on the market. Absolutely kills what is otherwise an extremely compelling headset at an actually decent price for the first time in HTC's history.
I understand that pancake lenses would have been too much to ask for and involve a massive reworking, but they absolutely could have pulled off aspheric lenses.
I have the Pico Neo 3 Link, and it has some of the best Fresnel lenses I have seen. It outperforms the Quest 3 in terms of clarity due to the DisplayPort connection.
would pancake be too much to ask for?? HTC has had pancake lens headsets since late 2021 (htc vive flow). why they couldn't just beef up the comfort a bit and slap a display port on it is beyond me

Quest 3 is pretty crazy for the price 110 fov and pancake lens i love it

@@arcrides6841 people where saying the pico 4 looked better and that uses an even lower bitrate than ques3. so the quest 3 should look bette, just have to push up the bitrate and switch to av1 encoding in software

HTC just can't seem to resist the urge to include at least one fatal design flaw in every headset they put out. This one looks like the closest they've come, but it's still a swing and a miss due to the Fresnel lenses. Like you said, if it had a more modern optical stack at this price point it would have been a contender, but as it is I really can't see any reason to pick this over the Crystal Light for around the same price point (even a little cheaper actually), and over a Quest 3 if you want stand alone capabilities. I honestly wish HTC would give me a reason to buy their products, but so far they haven't.
A step forw.... Backwards I mean :) This is maybe a slow design/production issue. They start to build something in 2022 and in 2 years the tech is already old. We criticize Pimax for being a mess making products on the go but maybe that's the way.. lol.

We're near 2025 already, so this headset definitely needs micro OLED displays as nothing else comes close, as the Bigscreen Beyond has proven with its best class image quality with its MicroOLED. And there should be an option to pay extra and have it come with VR hand gloves that support precise finger tracking (visual hand tracking will never be precise) and have 8 button emulation by touching finger tips to thumbs and some forcefeedback ideally; clunky game controllers put people off VR, and as good as it sounds, even though I have an RTX4090 PC, I won't invest in any VR system without micro OLED and VR gloves.

They were close this time, but they failed with fresnel and 21 PPD with no local dimming. This is dead on arrival, Pimax Crystal Light is better for simmers and Quest 3 is much better for standalone and mixed reality.

No Pancake, wtf. Why. I have a VP2 the Fresnel lenses suck otherwise it is a great headset (returned a quest 3, even though better lenses, the VP2 fits my msfs use better)
Who is this for? If they want to have Fresnel lenses they need to drop the price to $300ish and compete with the Quest 3s.
