  • I get asked so much lately from Murray cod fishing to my barramundi fishing. What clips are you using? Well i thought rather than just show you the clips i would do some testing on them to see what fails in a whole tackle set up.
    I was actually shocked with the results..

    Very in interesting as I have always tied a loop knot and have not lost a fish
    yet, but a pain when changing lures all the time, may have to try some of those clips
    thanks again for another great video.

      No worries mate, you can always run clips until you have that go to bait and then go back to loop knots 👊🏻

    Hiya Dean,
    Yep totally agree; the knot is the weakest point. I’ve tested many many different leaders both mono and Fluro. Different knots and lb class. If your looking for a new knot to try, have a go at the Toit knot. It’s my go to above all knots on fluro and mono. It takes a bit more time to tie but worth it.

    Love the Mustad Fastach's, so quick to use and leaves the lure swimming with best action compared to the various clip styles IMHO. My only real gripe with clips (inc. Fastach) is that they tend to collect more weed (esp. snot weed) than a good loop knot with little tag.

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  3 роки тому +1

      If you tie a loop knot and follow the line back through the way you came you can get the tag pointing inside the loop backwards so you never get any weed 👊🏻

    • @kellplater4888
      @kellplater4888 3 роки тому

      I thought the fastach ones were super strong but I came that close to loosing my first topwater king cuz of one. 6lb outfit on medium drag and the 56 king completely bent it out - clips just aren’t worth it imo. And not the first clip I’ve completely bent out on a fish (they are extremely extremely convenient tho)

    I use a lot of different clips, Decoy's are good but expensive, Mustad do the one with a loop at each end which I think gives a better swimming action and then the old cheap special from Big W which works well enough, you will get rubbed off on 40lb FC Rock before they break and they are $3 for 18 clips. They are also good when you are finding out what colour and size things are after. Mind you I fish the harbour in Darwin so different tactic, they are also rarely larger than 70cm. A clinch knot doubled through the clip also works for line up to 40lb.

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  3 роки тому

      nice one mate, heard good things about that harbour. Yes running a clip whilst you sort out lures is good idea and then i guess once you establish a lure for the day you can go back to a knot.

    Nice test,
    Unexpected results,
    I reluctantly changed to clips for Trout fishing and love it. The quality branded lighter clips I believe feel lighter than a loop knot. They break at 10lb, I figure if you break a clip when Trout fishing you’ve done something else very wrong.

    The main issues with clips opening though is from excessive lure changes. It would be interesting to conduct a test like the ones you did with clips that have been opened/shut say 5 or 6 times. Think you would see a difference. Have not fished with clips for a long time but I did like the Vanfook clips. Also the Halco lure clips were pretty well designed too but they didn’t exactly let the lure swim properly... not a big loop in the clip.
    Harro’s loop knot for the win. Has only let me down once and it wasn’t the knot. It was the greasy S factor attractant that undid the knot

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  3 роки тому

      Haha yep had hand sanitiser let me down with some knots i was tying at the Osaka trade show earlier this year. so i know the feeling. Haven't heard of Harro's loop knot. Guess i have some more research to do..

    I wonder how it would change the results if you use a TN knot or Palomar as the thin wire of the snap breaks the mono easily, im using Maria fighters snap for many years and im using TN or Palomar knot, no issues whatsoever

    • @DeanSilvester
      @DeanSilvester  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah nice, also helps with the lighter lines to double the loop through the clip before you tie the knot. Haven't heard of a TN knot before, will look it up

    • @freemansame8062
      @freemansame8062 4 місяці тому +1

      @@DeanSilvester TN is very simple knot and my favorite for any terminal tackle, from solid rings to tiny snaps. used in jigging mostly to connect solid rings to leaders because it acts as shock absorber, with thin lines under 10lb im tying it with three loops, works great when using tiny snaps and thin lines, it gives 100% of breaking strength of the line. if you gonna try it, let your loops overlap and give attention to your first half hitch direction 👍
