      viewing tip; it's hard to keep track of the puck, so watch the players, they 'll move like a school of fish to follow the motion of the puck.
      novice mistake; "why are standing in front of the net when their team is trying to score, won't they be in the way?" … yes, the attacking team usually WANTs people in front of the goalie, to block HIS view of the puck and maybe redirect it; while the defenders try to clear the path - straight shots, even fast ones, are easiest for the goalie to stop.
      when you hear a loud >PING< but see nothing, the puck hit the red goalpost, groan loudly at this "almost" goal.

    Just a quick note of correction: the faceoff after an offside doesn't go back to the attacking team's zone; it occurs in the neutral zone at the dot closest to the place of the infraction.

    • @Taeban42
      @Taeban42 6 років тому +31

      Unless the officials deem it to be an intentional offside, or an offside pass. On an intentional offside the face off goes all the way back to your defensive zone. On an offside pass it goes to where the pass came from.

    • @GREENneonDRIVER
      @GREENneonDRIVER 5 років тому +3

      @@Taeban42 nine dot faceoffs have been adopted by pretty much every league at every level. All faceoffs go to nearest faceoff dot of team that caused stoppage without giving territorial advantage. For offsides this means if the puck is skated offside, it goes to nearest neutral zone faceoff dot to where the puck was skated over the blue line. If it is passed or shot (youth hockey in U.S. doesn't allow a player to dump or shoot puck on goal), faceoff goes to nearest faceoff dot where puck was shot without giving territorial advantage.

    A note that isnt clear in the video:
    Misconducts do not result in your team being down a man. The player sits for 10 but the team isnt short (though misconducts usually are accompanied by other penalties that do result in being short handed).

    NHL fans, please welcome a new fan of yours.
    I'll be switching the NBA for the NHL for a while. Reason is, that we already know who will win the NBA title. I don't want sports to be predictable, and since your sport is most unpredictable, as far as I know, then I'll be joining aboard.
    I won't be choosing a favorite team yet, that would be disrespectful. So, I'll wait for the season to start, I'll watch as many games as possible, and maybe from there I'll chose a team to cheer on.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  7 років тому +32

      Welcome to the wonderful world of NHLism - a place whereby prima-donna players DON'T form super teams to the point where only one of two teams can win the championship every goddamn year. Bask at the glory that is unpredictable hockey, where any team can win on any given night. Choose your team wisely, as hockey teams are both traditional and superstitious and adds to the folklore of the game. I think you'll love it.

      i’m 15 and, although i’ve been intrigued by the NHL since 5th grade. i never really thought of learning anything about it at first. i went ice skating for the first time in 6th grade and it kind of gave me peace of mind. Just skating around on the ice calmed my mind and it instantly grounded me. i’ve held onto hockey since 8th grade sort of, i’ve watched multiple games, took notes and tried my hardest to understand it, but i can’t really wrap my head around it. i live in oklahoma, so there’s not really any chances for me to go ice skating a lot, and it’s kind of a foreign opinion on hockey. most of the time it’s football this, basketball that. however, hockey has really made itself my happy place, even if i don’t play the sport (yet.)

    Hockey referee here, great video, I understand that you withheld a lot of info for simplicity sake, but there were a few things you got wrong:
    •While the 2 ice sizes you mentioned are most common, many rinks in Europe are starting to downsize to 60m by 28m, with the KHL making that the maximum size for their league in a few years.
    •Any minor penalty can be called as a double minor or major penalty, at the discretion of the referee. Double minors are 4 minutes and they act like back to back minors. If a goal is scored in the first half, it's bumped down to 2 mins.
    •If you are offside, the faceoff takes place just outside the attacking zone, or at the next dot back from where the offside pass originated.
    •Your icing clip was actually a legal play because he crossed the center line before dumping it.
    •The OT and shootout rules are decided by the league, not the country, so saying "North America has overtime and international doesn't" is false. International tournaments do have overtime, and many North American leagues don't.
    •While the shootout has 3 rounds in most leagues, some leagues (including international hockey) have 5 round shootouts.

    • @sweiland75
      @sweiland75 Рік тому +1

      When a team is down by a goal and the time is near the end of the third period, that team can add an additional forward to create more offensive chances but they must have only six players on the ice so the team must pull their goalie. Also, a penalty is only called when the offending team gains possession of the puck. Until then, the other team can pull their goalie and substitute them with a forward until the offending team gains possession of the puck.

    You forgot that in North America one OT period then a shootout only during the regular season. During the playoffs OT periods keep going till there is a clear winner. Also during a shootout after the 3rd set of shooters and it is still tied. The team shooting first scores the team shooting last still have one chance to tie it back up, but if the team shooting last scores then it is over right away.

    Game misconduct was already mentioned in the movie "Sudden Death". It is any serious infraction worthy of being an ejectable offense, and the hockey player charged with it is expelled from the game. Examples of game misconduct infractions include punching a referee or goalie, throwing a player into the boards to injure that player, or using the stick as a weapon to attack a ref, or doing a very serious slash on a player.
    In addition, a game misconduct can also mean a league fine against the one doing it, depending on the severity of the misconduct.

This is distinctly different from sports like lacrosse and soccer where if a goalie gets a penalty or a red card (in the case of hockey), they have to come off.
