Hey! I was a foreigner in Japan during this situation!
How I handled it: I already understood a bit about radiation so I simply brushed up on it a little more, and then monitored some radiation measuring devices in my area.
In the face of all of my extended family calling to tell me to come home, I had to dispel a lot of nuclear myths, but basically even at the elevated levels after the Fukushima incident, I would've gotten more radiation in the sky on my flight back to Australia vs. staying in Japan for another 4 months. I made the obvious choice and stayed.
In fact, even if I were only 50km out from the reactor, I probably would have stayed, but would've stopped eating bananas to counteract the slightly elevated radiation levels (bananas are quite radioactive).

How is this even a question? 12 years into my life here, this is as much home as any other place. "Staying behind" is about the worst terminology possible. Id call it simply staying home.

Good on them. I had to deal with such insanity in Kyushu which is exactly about as far away from the disaster as you could be, being a tourist in their land gave them the money they needed to stay afloat in the short term, and the residents who were not "Japanese" who showed their merit as people along side with the many Japanese who did help out, shows the world that Japan is a a country that accepted them, and that people really do have hearts of gold sometimes.

This is ridiculous. When the earthquake and tsunami hit, plan prices went up alot. They nearly doubled. It wasn't about a passive attitude. There were people who literally could not afford to fly out.

i am going to study abroad in japan next month. honestly, people make it sound like the end of the world all the time(Y2K anyone???) it's like the boy who cried wolf. people need to get on with their lives and stop worrying about what might happen. focus on what already happened and help each other out, not run away or freak out every second:P life is what u make it. it is one thing to be cautious and another to run around like a chicken with ur head cut off.

Foreigners in Japan generally are there for the love of culture and the country. As in love and friendship - one has to show support during the bad times as well as the good. so it doesn't surprise me one bit that most decided to stay.

It is natural that many foreigners envy Japan.
But if you live in Japan, please learn and speak Japanese.
    Japan's language is Japanese.

I didn't experience any earthquakes while I was there so I cant give an opinion on that but over all its not that bad of a place it no different than New York City just a lot safer.

From chile, I would leave in there, we have valdivia historical earthquaque with magnitud 9.5 richter and february 29 2010 magnitud 8.6 in santiago, japan 9.0. We have a phrase for this "el hombre es un animal de costumbre" = "the man is an animal from customs", in time, you can go native, sorry my english, we say the same things to E.E.U.U. How they can leave with huracans and dont leave the area?. well you can tell me the same answer to me.

Living in Japan clearly causes a certain adoption, not only of Japanese manners (constant self deprecating smiles and pretending casualness) but attitudes as well. False optimism is the price required of you; in evidence in the denial of danger. Shortly after this video was recorded, high levels of radioactive contamination were found in tea the southwest of Tokyo.

Japanese citizens have chosen to stay? They have no choice. They want to keep working. Where are they going to go? Be homeless in another country? Foreigners not leaving Japan because they work in Japan. All has to do with work, and people are putting Work first, and health safety second.

  • @MeowersTheCat

The radiation level of Tokyo is lower than most of the cities in the world now.
go check "Japan Travel Updates after the 3.11 Earthquake"
Actually, the radiation level was higher when China did nuclear weapon testings several decades years ago.
People die from many causes. Japan has very low murder, traffic-accident related death, and cancer death rates. Also good national health insurance, no terrorist bombings, no riots....... I cannot find any country safer than Japan.

I guess simply there are not enough jobs in some countries including Europe unfortunately since I had lived in both Europe and North America.
on the other hand, Japan might have for them. In yet, it is hard for young people to seek out well-paid job.
Honestly, Japan needs to stop treating foreigners like something special...they are just humans like you all.
Nothing special if someone can speak English because English is an internationally spoken language. Don't spend substantial amount of money on English education that native just teaches you whatever...that's fucked up to me...
