Bret Peterson- Hillclimbing the Alta Electric Dirt Bike

- Multi-National Championship racer Bret Peterson of Team Peterson Racing threw a leg over the Alta Motors Redshift MX dirt bike during the Northwest Nitro Nationals in Sunnyside, Washington. He caught the attention of the large crowd in attendance by cresting the 2000 ft. "Cash Climb" hill on the Redshift with ease. On the first day Alta was offering demos, some of the top riders in the sport's history were riding it and coming back with nothing but smiles. The amount of torque and response was incredible, and made it more enjoyable to ride around the tight stuff than a standard gas motor bike. We're excited for this technology and cannot wait to see an electric dirt bike in our garage one day!
Film: Matt Musgrove
i love 2 and 4 strokes, but you could have a track anywhere with no noise
But the dust will kill any motorcycle park.
The switch to 4 stroke was a big one. Who doesn't love their 450's? Electric bikes are in our future. They make sense.
vetten76 I miss the KX500's and CR500's
Amen brother, nothing like the rush of a big 2stroke single in the meat of the powerband!! I'm a bit older, for me it was the 440 Maico and the 500 Husqvarna silver streak in the 70's and 80's! : )'
yeah but its so sanitary though. No brappppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
vetten76 sound like RC truck lol
vetten76 2 strokes destroy them all
20 years from now it will be the northwest Lithium Nationals...cant wait for the impending gas vs electric showdown thats coming soon
phil tripe. they have already raced each other
Given sufficiently powerful batteries then gasoline has no chance whatsoever. Electric is all power from the instant the throttle is turned, fossil fuel can not compete here. We're just waiting for electric storage capacity advancements (of course, continuously muted by the fo$$il fuel industry).
phil tripe so true mate , like the scene in star wars when Luke wanted to go buy power converters, It will be the norm soon and our grandkids will look at us in awe, we were the fossil fuel generation that had mechanical machine's! :-) :-) :-)
Jezzimo Davis , fossil fuel still charges those batts. very impressive bike I will say.
See RedBull straight rhythm race, Alta electric vs. 250 four strokes....
The welds on the frame are 👌🏻
I hear FMF is going to make a tow behind trailer with a 50 KW diesel generator. Just to extend the riding time a tad bit.
1h riding and 9h recharging sooo coool!!
Does fmf make a pipe for these yet?
been neenerveen fmf gonna have to start making specialized cards to stick in the spokes 😂
Pro Circuit already has them in production.
Wow. It sounds great. Kinda like shaking a can of bolts with a running dremel inside.
I wish these things weren't so expensive.
A Real Black Person Ikr
They won't be for much longer, in part because the bicycle eBike (class I-III) segment has exploded, driving battery component prices down fast and getting faster with competition, and it's starting to bleed over to the Class IV world (Motorcycles), to say nothing of the Chinese EV car companies trying to take out Tesla as top dog. Prices are dropping at a steady rate all the time, because the market money is in the batteries, not the bike or motor
I rode those bikes they are amazing
Great coverage of this and all EV racing events. Hope to see you at the June 25 EV Refuel 2017 races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Imagin sitting in a supercross stadium with 22 riders rideing these bike and you cant here shit no engine sound no rev limiters but just the crowd noise
Derrick fish777 yea that sounds pretty lame. They could always get Rc car engine sounds though.
I wonder how much extension cord they have???
Damn, he ate that hill 👆 though. 👍
Rip all exhaust companies
Who still be riding them 2 strokes🤨
i think electric bikes aren 't that bad but im missing the sound :/
Those things are cool as fuck, its a nice invention..
But I realy think the best thing in motocross are the engine sounds. Without these it isnt that cool to watch.
Not too soon to me...there's allot of companies that will be out of buisness if electric bikes come out too quick..That's allot of people and companies across the world that will be lost..BRING IT ON
Definitely the future but I'll stick to my ATC 250R's and modding them
They really need to put that electric system in the Honda Fat Cat at 2:45
That's awsome!! sounds like a full size rc toy
3:48
Oh no! He fell off the flat earth edge!
Paddle tire.
Put the motor in the hub no chain.
Needed an m5b tire!
I'm glad Bret is recovering well.
nothing like hoping on a electronic bike and hitting that power band
I'm waiting on the On-Board sound generator add-on....any sound, anytime!
Amazing . . but electric vehicles have no soul . . . I like that old time rock and roll.
There shit they have no soul and there's no like start it up feeling
Needs more cowbell...
Okay I want one to add to the collection. 125 & 250 2 stroke, 450 4stroke, A quad and a electric bike oh and a pit bike and I'm good! 👍
Enduro races will have to have chargers for these things at gas stops.
I haven't made up my mind yet if we should jail 4 strokers also, or just the 2 strokers. Once the batteries on the electric can last 2 hours of course.
paddle tire ?!?
I want that fatcat
and these haven't even been out out long, can you imagine in 10 years? will electric nominate? i will miss the sound and smell of a 2 stroke, i hope they will still be around
Gentlemen, I'm sorry, I can't put down my 2004 KX-500! Nor could I ever let go of a 2001 CR-500!!!! I know some of you will think I'm crazy and that's Cool. However, I will surely take a 1981 twinshock Maico 490!!!! You have the electrics, the 4 strokes, and good on you, more power to all of them, I Love the 2 strokes!!!! til this day (on the professional side) our own AMA will not let an equivalent cc 2 stroke against a 4 stroke. Canada will! Australia will but FIM Europe and our AMA? No Way!!! a bummer. 2 Stokes Forever!!!
they run 250cc 2 stroke against 250cc 4 stroke in australia and the 4 strokes still win
James Woods I did say that Australia and Canada are the only countries that allow equivalent cc for 2 stroke and 4 stroke. that America (AMA) and European (FIM) do NOT! Also, enduro 2 strokes rule, if the FIM and the AMA would allow I bet the Manufactory will create a 450 2 stroke and some of these pro's will be jumping up on those 2 strokes and will be busting up 4 stroke wins!!! I mean seriously could you see ET on a KX-450 2 stroke with today's technology?? Holy Shit!!! That would be the Cats Ass!!!!
Cr500 all the way !!! Let the dorks ride the silent bikes
I wonder what engine" braking will be like with a electric motor, I mean the motor itself will act a lot like a brake, it will be difficult to transition from a clutch/gearbox/throttle set up and then what exactly can we expect range wise, durability and reliability and finally cost over time.
I like it. Instant torq.
miss paddle tire
Riding a Zero FX around the city is fun.
Are these the ones made in Talent, Oregon inside the old Wal-Mart?
Add a clutch to control the power?
the Sound likes carrera car
Run what ya brung it's all good.
Hmmmmm. I have videos on my channel of riding the Alta and its sick.
yeah not loving the sound. but cool for sure
Bet the bike loses alot of burst rate(power flattens out)in which rpms could be lost when on power constantly going up a hill. Either way its so neat to watch the advancements.
@2:45 The wild bouncing and sometimes unexpected off track handling Honda fat cat
I can't get over how lame it sounds
Master Shake stick a card in the spokes then
Gamingdaemon I'll just twist the wick on my combustion engine dirt scooter
Master Shake sorry I couldn't hear what you are talking about. lol
It sounds like an rc car
Don't worry, 2 stroke noise only competition will still be available in the future
my rc trucks went to electric, and so will my dirtbikes!
i converted my rc cars into custom gasoline cars. Much faster, no wait to charg, beautiful angry sound and i don't have to buy and carry extra batteries with me to play with it longer
I'd rather have the throttle be where the clutch should be and operated with one finger like the clutch... The more you let it out, the more power you get, just like a bike... Same for slow obstacles and such, when you wanna pop the front wheel up without moving forward it gaining speed, you just pop the clutch quickly when it's revved up a bit... If they added a clutch and upgraded the suspension (4cs forks are outdated and sucked compared to competitors when they were current), I'd also like either more run time or faster charging time...
Im very interested in getting an electric dirt bike, this is very very close but needs just a couple of upgrades and fixes before I'm ready to shell out over $10k for one...
If the 2019 model comes with Air forks and a clutch I will buy one.
Don't worry, 2 stroke noise only competition will still be available in the future
"HeY CaN YoU ShUt ThAt ThInG Up ItS ToO LoUd"
looks heavy. What does the bike weight? Around 240?
Georgeqaws it's about 265, but feels like a heavy mountain bike. Crazy how nimble and light it feels because of no rotating mass in the motor
Kx / Cr 500 sound good.
solar panel plastics would be cool
Those things are cool.
I got to ride the Alta electric bike about a week ago, was impressive for an electric bike but 15k is too much$$$
you can buy a gasoline bike with this money which is gonna be much better
@Nicol yes
Where can I buy one?
Man that sounds like a small RC dune buggy.
For everyone wondering it's a $15,000 bike
No.. RedShift MX 14,995 Street Legal Sumo 13,945 Around 40hp but 120 ft lbs torque @ 250lb weight.
Cameron k thats the cost of a new bike out the door anyway.
TheLoneWolfRider Someone is ripping you off
Michael MacDonald lmao I ride a 2000 RM250, im talkin bout my buddy who bought a 2014 ktm 250sx when they first hit stores and broke the petcock valve off turning the gas off the first time out😂 it was 15 out the door and i really dont doubt it, i personally dont deal with that store for a few reasons, also i get like an15% discount at my local suzuki dealer
...unless he bought that bike w/all of the Six Days trick parts on it or it was the Ryan Dungey limited edition, your friend got ripped off something awful!
This is a large rc bike
Kawi85 I have the same bike. Kawasaki 85
was it just me or were his tyres to bald? looks like it needed a tad bit more grip
Are you going to haul a gasoline generator with you to the track? Let's see how well it does in the upcoming 5 hour endurance race.
Bryan Hensley electric bikes get great mileage so charging wouldn't be a problem
Range is 2 hours at 50% throttle. Two hour recharge back to 100%.
hahahaha a spare battery for that bike would be thousands so...
You can hear your own farts when you ride that bike 😂
the suspension seems really loose..
150 lbs of torque
50hp more than enough
I feel like this would need some sort of clutch and flywheel to be practical in tight enduro riding, because you rely on dropping the clutch to lift the front wheel very quickly and other techniques like that without picking up any speed. I just dont think those techniques are applicable with this bike.
xheppelin electric motor makes max torque and hp at any rpm, so I think all you would need is to change the gearing for enduro, then just grab some quick throttle.
xheppelin Yeah you only drop the clutch to get instant torque. On an electric bike the torque is always instant, especially at low motor speeds.
It's very easy on rough terrain, especially on tough descents to accidentally grab some throttle, going down a tough hill without a clutch to counteract that would be bloody perilous.
Resto just make sure you have proper free play in the grip. Also i think it would be way more mellow rolling into it. You can turn the electric motor very slowly after all.
Resto personally i think an electric bike would be one of the best enduro bikes you could ride, but thats just my opinion...
Pretty cool. It sounds like a rc car though
RIP all gas motorcycles
Need to wire in a speaker and sound system that sounds like a two stroke… LOL
Part of the experience is the noise and smell. Imagine silent motocross/supercross. Wheres the rush? Rather watch the race on mute at home. That being said i'd ride one. I'd have fun on anything 2 wheels.
That has the 2012 crf250 fender and number plate!
What are those goggles he is wearing?
Was that Jesse james
All of these haters lmao I think it would be a blast to putt through the deep woods all by your lonesome sneaking up on animals and whatnot
I'd rather push my 2 stroke up the hill than ride one of these pieces of shit
Don't worry, 2 stroke noise only competition will still be available in the future
0:05 😂😂😂
it's pretty cool but what's the fun in not having a noisey engine
2 wheels is 2 wheels. What’s with the hate?
Still wouldn't trade my cr 250 for one
I'll never ride one
Smoked Out Gardens I will
pretty sure my 7 year old rode his huffy up that last hill. Electric has a ways to go, I was interested in one until I saw the weight on the new KTM free ride 0. Its a heavy pig.
People are so negative for new ideas. 2 strokes are gone. Now 4 strokes have a competitor. I cannot wait to see electric take over.
Sackmatters what makes you think 2 strokes are gone?
2 strokes are gone? You can still buy new ones and they are still the preference of woods riders.
Burned at the stake smothered in 927 castor oil !!!
I love electric bikes, and hope to buy a Zero SR for my commute. But as for 2 strokes being gone, you are fucking high! Fuel injected 2 strokes are here, and when I retire in a few years I am getting a fuel injected 300 two stroke. Hopefully the Beta X-Trainer is fuel injected by then.
Once the batteries can last 2 hours in full power mode, we need to strongly consider putting to jail anyone still on a 2-stroke.
That was the most anti climactic start I have ever seen
Sounds like an rc car, first they try to get rid of 2 strokes now their trying to replace the combustible engine with gay ass electric trash buckets
Gas Mixin Goons these things will be outperforming gas engines very soon
Charles Chmielewski no clutch and they weight alot more than a 450 , so not for 20 + years
Bob Dole think how far battery technology has come in the past ten years . if it continues I imagine an electric bike will win a pro motocross or supercross in 5
Yeah, try removing electric motor out of your household and place internal combustion engine on everything in your household. Gotta do man, or you're just gay using them on your household.
That bike weighs 267 pounds.
Was that bam margera?? LOL
So he never made it up the hill lol he claims he did earlier but no video. Gas it.
0:59. Oops, low battery...
I'll stick with my 2smoker
Once the batteries can last 2 hours on full power mode (or close to it) we need to strongly consider jailing anyone still riding a 2 stroke.
sounds like crap. lol.
Justin Flynn. lol indeed
Justin Flynn get a hearing device lol
gergely bunczom. ear plugs for the 4 stroke. lol. hearing device..
I have both 2 and 4.
One of these will not work in Dakar
wouldnt want short circuit in a river crossing... you gonna get tazered big time
they need to add a speaker with 2 strokes sounds....
Bike it pretty cool but did u see that mint fatcat lol
we need to fucking stop with all this electric dirt bike crap just listen to a 2 stoke nice and loud listen to a 4 stroke nice but listen to a electric pile of junk would you not want to here where your friends are going on a trail or just run out of electricity I'm just saying stay on a 2 stroke they a better the a big thing of plastic😐😐😶
I like the Honda fat cat better
This bike is boring whether you like it or not. If you are so concerned about a little smoke then u better drive a prius
Sad to see how unprogressive the moto community can be. Many people still aren't on board with four strokes even though there is a reason that that is what all the pros ride.
Everyone thought that four strokes were the gayest shit when they first came out. They couldn't hang with two strokes at all, now look at them, people give the excuse that they lost races was because they were on a two stroke rather than four.
Electric bikes are absolutely going to be the future, get on board or be stuck with all the people who thought four strokes would never be viable.
Gamerred you claim victory for 4 strokes using twice the ccs to match 2 strokes? What an idiot. A 450 fuel injected 2 stroke in a modern frame would murder a 4 stroke.
Yes but electric bikes are over the line.
I see the electric coming but not yet, 5-10 yrs maybe. They are heavy which I am sure will develop and improve. Whats is the battery life? What happens when you crash hard and break open a battery? What do you do with a spent battery? Recharge time?
I think if the options were given people would migrate back to the 2 T.
They wonder why sales dropped? Its called complexity and cost of ownership. Dad can't fix his or juniors bike in the garage in the morning and go ride in the afternoon anymore and risk your are exposed to buying a used 4T bike. If the engine is on the verge of blow up, that expense is usually worth equal to what the bike is worth and does not increase the bikes value once done.
Gamerred yeah man they still can't how come a 500 2 stroke can't compete with a 450 your just talking shit they still won't let equivelent cc 2 strokes compete
Gamerred 93 hey make equal DISPLACEMENT RULES. EQUAL CC TO EQUAL CC. AND EVERYONE WOULD BE BACK ON TWO STROKES IN THE PROS. aaahhhh
