RARE Bypass Railroad Crossing Explained & Shown Up Close With 3 Norfolk Southern Trains In Ohio

- Rare, Unusual Railroad Bypass Up Close! 3 Norfolk Southern Trains & CSX Loaded Coal Train With DPU At Track Speed! These trains are in Carlisle, Ohio. This railroad crossing has a bypass on the north end of the crossing that is used by both lanes of travel. We see 3 trains passing the crossing while some of the automobile traffic uses the bypass. This time I walked under the tracks and filmed both sides of the crossing. While I was waiting for the local switching freight train to pass I heard a train approaching on the nearby CSX line. I walked toward the CSX railroad crossing in Carlisle and zoomed in 6X to film that train. Yes, I filmed it without film. It is an action. The CSX train was a loaded coal train with a mid train DPU. That was a nice catch since there isn't much coal through the Cincinnati and Dayton areas.
I was in Carlisle most of the day filming trains on the CSX line. I was there about 5 or 6 hours before the first NS train came through. I will have a video out showing those trains soon. The CSX line is a lot busier than the NS line. The CSX line is the Toledo Sub that runs from Cincinnati toward Toledo and the best frequency is 160.230. The NS line is the Dayton District that runs from Cincinnati to Dayton and the best frequency is 160.980. Trains on the CSX line are considered north and south while the Dayton District is considered east and west.
Filmed Tuesday, March 28, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Excellent train video!!
Another great video JT. Thanks again for another great video
Hello JT, what I like of your videos are some details like the bypass, the concrete poles with rusty wire on it. And of course your written explanations. Thanks.
They should have an underpass on the other side for traffic going the other way. Looks like a recipe for a head-on accident.

So that would eliminate the RR crossing😂
Great catches JT the underpass pretty cool. 😇👌👍
Thanks!
@@FabianDiazTrainsTrucksNCars True. It's too narrow. They shouldn't let cars come in the direction toward me.
Nice vid! That by pass going under the tracks was there 1st, I'd say! The crossing was probably installed as traffic grew thru time!
Just my thoughts!
Wow CSX with N/S. I only ever saw that two times here in central Pa. Cool video. I see you are in Carlisle Ohio. There is a Carlisle Pa. with a track that goes thru the town.

Great trains. Nice capture. Thanks a ton for sharing.
Those trains were moving on today.
Barely got my coffee finished.
Had to go find another video for the second cup!
Thanks again Jawtooth!
🚂
Glad you enjoyed it
Cool train video today.
Awesome trains and loved the coal train JT!!!
Super realizzazione video complimenti 🌺🥀
Thanks for being so fast! You were the first person to comment!

Man, that coal train was "bookin" son! Good videos JT.
🐈
All angles are good as long as there's a train in there somewhere! Enjoyed it much!
Another enjoyable JT video... JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME this morning!

Always a great show Thank You 😊 Jaw Tooth!!!
Great good made video, mr Jaw Tooth.
Make a bypass on the other side for road traffic. And then a complete new double underpass under the railroadcrossing.
No traffic accidents and the cars can go on and the trains also, a win-win situation.
Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands 🇾🇪🇺🇸.
You're really getting all the angles in this one! Even the coal train from a distance was was good..a different perspective from time to time never hurts. Fantastic video JT!

Nice video Brian. A few days ago when we had all that rain that by pass was under water and closed for couple days. Anyway good seeing you yesterday.

Hi JT good afternoon that’s a nice bridge you stop to watch trains or go on your mary o way ❤❤❤
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo ! 🌟🌟👍🙏

You also caught a very unusual car in the first train’s video. It was a pink-colored covered hopper owned by the Klemm Coop in Kleenex, Iowa. Several coops in Central Iowa purchased covered hoppers many years ago that were all painted pink. Most today are very faded but this car was still fairly pink. These cars are rarely seen east of the Mississippi. Good catch!
125 cars on the coal-train, roughly? Still, a lot of coal there right enough. A couple of the other trains seemed to 'empty the yard'...and then fill it back up again! No trains for hours then there's three in a row! Keep safe out there, JT. Cheers!
BUEN DIA JAW,GRANDES TRENES COMO SIEMPRE,GRACIAS SALUDOS DESDE URUGUAY.

Brian we can count on you producing a great product! THANKS
Those tracks in Carlisle are very punctual on time. Between 4:30PM and 5:00PM and even on Saturday and Sunday! I have to leave for church on Sunday evening early to beat the trains!
You've shown this unique way to not have to wait for a train. This looks very popular. Maybe more crossings will be like this.
Very good video, have a nice day my friend!
Thank you! You too!
I'm surprised they don't have more bypass lanes like that in other places, that's the only one I've ever seen.
Coal clinker huh?... That's interesting, I just learned something, never heard of a "clinker" !! 👍
Awesome informative video !! 👍👍👍
I think this line is former PRR. As this crossing fits PRR’s general practice which I have noted on former PRR lines.
Years ago that line was New York Central. I live about six miles from there.
This is really cool! Reminds me of the one time I was in North Carolina, on I-40 I think, and I saw a railroad crossing on the exit ramp and entrance ramp. The tracks and road also shared the same bridge. It sucks I couldn’t go up there and check it out. But imagine how chaotic it is when the crossing is on. There are some traffic lights before it but I’d imagine people stop on the tracks constantly, but I hope I’m wrong about that.
This is a good idea for a model railroad! Thanks!!!
Great video as usual. JAWTOOTH WHERE IS THE RADAR GUN . ONE THING I DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IS LACK OF TRAINS HERE IN CLEVELAND . COLLINWOOD YARD ALMOST ALWAYS HAS ALOT OF ACTION AND I CAN SEE THE NORFOLK SOUTHERN MAIN LINE from my house
Good morning. Nice video

That by-pass can be traffic nightmare with heavy traffic all trying to use it at the same time anyway great video thanks Jaw tooth
The DL&W placed concrete posts along sections of mainline. On the Boonton-Montclair Line through Mountain Lakes, NJ some of these posts still exist. You can see them from the train during autumn and winter when the brush is sparse, they are on the south side of the right of way.
I remember that time you got blasted by coal dust. Glad you kept your distance JawTooth!
I wonder if there's an emergency responders' depot nearby (police/fire/ambulance/hospital). Maybe that's why the underpass was created, knowing they can have real long trains go by, blocking the road for long periods of time.
Kitty was busy today. 😺
Nice video Jaw Tooth!
I thought the 11foot 8 bridge was something! I'm surprised we didn't see a semi try to take it!
That last train wasn't wasting any time.
This video was supposed to come up at 8am. I remember scheduling it but somehow it didn't come up so I had to post it manually. That keeps happening for some reason. Oh well, thanks for watching !
Awesome video and catches! At 12:08 isn’t that an SD40-2? 👍994
Awesome back at the bypass location.
Brian that was an amazing video 😊
You were here a year or 2 ago. I remember this sight. 😎
That's a good place to film and NS highballs through there, good long range shot of coal train!🚂🛤😄
Another great video Brian!
Thanks again!
At 18:38 there is a gondola with the NS logo and AOK(Arkansas-Oklahoma) reporting mark. Is there some advantage to leasing a reporting mark rather than posting their own on the car?
I noticed the flatbed cars. I watched the RR workers prepare the load (strapping) on flatbeds cars and wow it takes lots of time for every car.
Was at prince WV yesterday and barley made it in time to film train entire tunnel
I'd like to see a video at a major rail yard. Lots of action...
Dang!!! Where you are filming there seems be only 2 engines pulling a really long train while out here in the west, the engines are required to have a minimum of 3 engines unless the train is longer then 4 or more engines will be required to go on the trip.
Interesting I didn't know that they required 3 engines on a train. What if it is a short train? Seems kind of wasteful but that's the government for ya. Lol. Thanks for watching !
Very nice

Hey jaw tooth I frown on the people using the bypass. I'd always use the crossing. Have a great railroad day
Nice catches Brian!
Glad you enjoyed it

Me, my wife , and my daughter love watching your videos every night. It's a nightly tradition. Started following you about a month ago. My dad runs a railroad maintenance business Keith Benfield Contractor for over 40 years. If your ever in North Carolina you should hit us up and meet him. Also there's a train museum in Spencer if you have never been you should. Dads done a lot of work for them and could give you a VIP tour of it if you ever wanted to visit.
Fascinated underpass. The 38th Ave n underpass in St Pete, FL has a water pump next to the tracks. So I'm wondering what you do when you are waiting for hours for a train??
😊thanks for the video,was coool. greetz:🍐Peer.👍👍👍👍
Good Video Jawtooth

Awesome video!
Thanks!
I saw you do a video from the overpass a couple months ago or so. I;m beginning to think you live not too far from there especially if you go there as regular as you sound like you do.. lol
Norfolk southern leading a CSX train, never seen that before. Very interesting. Great video
That was a Norfolk Southern train with a CSX locomotive
Good morning, Brian. Hope Sophie is dong okay.

So good to hear. She is a sweety.
Thank you, Jaw Tooth, for another video at the Central Avenue bypass at the Norfolk Southern crossing in Carlisle, Ohio. I know we have been at this location in the past, but this is the first time that you have shown us how the traffic from both directions makes way for one another while using the single lane bypass. Usually, you concentrate on the train that is passing Central Avenue. This time you decided to show us some of the vehicular traffic using the bypass.
Good video jawtooth
It is not luck. It's good timing on part. Keep looking up.
Just to let you know that Csx is doing some construction work in chent ky by the power plant they have several sections of new track there an a switch sections section
Great 👍 👌 trains today I would not use that bypass I'd wait in line and watch them go by
Same here and I did lol
I'm not certain, but it looked like the first I beam of the overpass has been hit and bent. Check it out the next time you're there.
WOW i love this video did you know this song down in ohio swag like ohio
Thanks for the video, i like that bypass bridge, but i wouldn't use it
Hi Jaw Tooth, I have a question for ya if you don’t mind. Where did you find the frequencies for the defect detectors? I can pick up the crews but not the detectors, do you have any advice?
Never seen anything like that before😊
So on the road you got Norfolk Southern crossing with an bypass and CSX crossing up ahead No bypass is a Cool spot for railfans but I'm thinking about 10-6 level bridge is so small " No Trucks"
Unless it was urgent I’d stop and watch the train go by. 😊
🚂
I can't help but think that the bypass of the crossing was installed for emergency vehicles, even though there's no sign saying "Emergency Vehicles Only".
Awesome seeing that CSX coal train since I live along the line were it originated! Was very cool seeing the Georgia Road emblem, which is the DPU unit. As for the NS/CSX together, the only time I've ever seen that was in South Western Pa, believe it was sand for the gas wells. That train though had NS, CSX, and Bnsf. Great video though!
I'm sure emergency vehicles love those
J. T. you didn't see the Con Rail Auto rack with open doors at 4:36 of the video?
I like train videos on UA-cam jawtooth 👍
Shorter than the truck eating bridge seen on another UA-camr channel.
Lol, not any trucks taking this route thankfully
🐷
🤩
❤
so the motorists caught at the front have no choice but to wait, ha
They should have just made a regular underpass there?
🚂
I don't see any cut backs on coal production with all the ecologists screaming. I wonder how NS is going to handle the big fine against them. Whoa, nothing like beating the crossing gate by mere inches.
I counted 134 on the coal train
😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
18 wheelers can't use those by- passes can they? Not enough clearance?
Good Morning Jaw Tooth.
Indonesia hadir bro
Some of those drivers who take that bypass are aggressive drivers. That could be messy if they met someone going the opposite way.:)
I’d much rather wait a few minutes for the train than risk a collision while using the bypass. Besides I like trains.
Ummmm… why wasn’t that 1st crossing just a full-on underpass? Is it something to do with height that they can’t get it low enough, so that bypass is the best they can do? That is a very… very odd setup
Did you notice under the bridge that someone already hit it?
Distant cousin to the 11’8” bridge?
1643 is a ex NW trucks are a give way
Wow! Those Carlisle people are really on their options game. If only those Hamilton people would build a train bridge over their city, put centre Hamilton under a bubble for better weather for your video making, and maybe do something with some of those old paper warehouses, they'd get my vote for #1. Gracias por tu video, Señor Jaws. RT sends, Puebla, México.
R.T. West. A Ferromex was back in town here again with a N/S it was a tanker unit. Caught it in Hershey Pa. Westbound. Just caught it about 3 hours ago.
