In Bulgaria we used to have similar obicai - German or Kaloian in the past, but now I think nobody practises it. We also had a tsar - Kaloian, is this name popular in Romania?
Caloian and his valach (romanian) brothers raissed against the Byzantine rullers and formed a Vlacho-Bulgarian state at the North and South of the Danube. The Asan dinasty became in time more and more bulgarian
@@amatiesei88 yes, romanians called him Ionitza Caloian. Son of Ion. But slavs call it Ivan. Romanians dont see Ionita(a romanian diminutive for Ion) as a bulgarian, but as a vlah. Maybe Bulgars were fresh out of Asia but powerfull enough to rule over balkans and asimilate vlah ethos. Maybe Kaloyan name comes from the vlah caloian tradition instead of greek kallos and ioanis. John the handsome. Heheh.
