Requiem for a dream is one of 2 movies where when it was done i just sat motionless/silent as the credits rolled and eventually ended. The buddy that I watched it with just sat in silence with me until she said "so do you want to watch a disney movie or something"
Grave of the Fireflies was one of the first Ghibli movies I ever saw, and while I don't regret seeing it I certainly have only ever been able to watch it twice.
0:27 Midsommar 1:30 Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance 2:41 Relic 3:58 Brazil 5:11 Grave of the Fireflies 6:35 Do the Right Thing 8:00 The Machinist 9:08 Kes 10:24 Uncut Gems 11:50 Requiem for a Dream
To be fair I haven't seen the film, but that brief plot synopsis was just 1984 with some added dream sequences. A film doesn't need to have a fully original plot to be good.
Absolutely agreed...who in their right mind came up with that sentence? Jesus, what a classic film. Yes, the plot owes a lot to dystopian literature and 1984 in particular, but the film is very much its own thing. Its like calling Star Wars a thinly veiled ripoff of Dune. Yes it owes its existence in part to the latter. There is a marked difference though between an inspiration and a ripoff. Such a dumb, vapid and wholly unjustified jab at a masterpiece of a film.
I'm a bit surprised that the movie Kids (1995) is not on this list. I will not give any detail as per why, just that I'm really surprised. I will say that I would rather watch Requiem For A Dream 100 times before watching Kids for a 2nd time in my life.
The ending quote is so haunting and will stick with me forever. “Earnest Hemingway once wrote: The world is a wonderful place and worth fighting for.” “I agree with the second part…”- Morgan Freeman.
Grave of the fireflies is both beautiful and tragic; and a hard watch, i own it and only manage to watch it twice meanwhile my wife watched and didn’t feel anything which still disturbs me
The Machinist is definitely a very hard movie to watch. Especially knowing how he got so emaciated, and then went on to immediately put all of his weight back on for Batman. But it's also just a deeply unsettling story.
Four movies that I think would’ve been perfect for this list or that could be included on another version or continuation of this list are 2013’s Open Grave, 2016’s Edge of Wintee, 2019’s The Lodge, and 2022’s Blood
Although everyone is saved a the end of Contagion...seeing what led to the horrible epidemic with the bat and pig and then the cook shaking Gwyneth's character's hand all while the eerie music plays is hard to watch.
Of course, even though Howard from Uncut Gems is dead, at least Julia will be safe and so will Dinah (despite her in the process of finalizing the divorce before Howard is killed) and the rest of Howard's family. You might have been able to hear faintly the approaching of the police (after Dinah called them) so it looks like Phil and Nico won't get away with killing Howard and Arno. So it's a bittersweet ending with more emphasis on the bitter part.
I remember being utterly heartbroken by The Science of Sleep. Basically that the protagonist had become so obsessed over his fantasies about his love interest he had blown any chance of actually getting together in real life. Or what about Million Dollar Baby? That third act is not supposed to be how sports films end.
How about ”Looking For Mr. Goodbar” and ”Dancer In The Dark”? ”Lilya 4-ever”, but that whole thing was so depressing, so maybe the ending wasn’t that bad.
Watch Requiem for a Dream again. His mom forgets to put a stamp on the letter. I noticed it the first time i watched the movie. Her life goes to hell over forgetting a stamp and chowing down amphetamines.
Angel Heart (though the endings plot twist has been used so many times in movies at this point, you can see it coming a mile away these days.) Bad Lieutenant. (The original with Harvey Keitel not Port of Call, NO.) Irreversible. (Though that entire movie is soul-destroying.)
Brazil is a brilliant film. Sam is mentally ill. Requiem For a Dream does indeed have one of the most depressing ends, but its a movie about Four ADDICTS. What did you expect?

You made it all the way through a SECOND time? Way tougher than I am, that ending still chills my soul after seeing it one time 25 years ago.
It's an undeniably brutal movie.
Another film worth mentioning is Dancer in the Dark.
That film is the definition of a masterpiece that you will watch once and then never again.
Requiem is one of those movie you don't wanna watch again
This may not be an 'amazing' film but, it is one I have enjoyed over the years and has probably THE most soul crushing ending. The Mist.

Calling Brazil "a thinly veiled ripoff of George Orwell's '1984' is possibly the dumbest sentence that I have ever heard.
To be fair I haven't seen the film, but that brief plot synopsis was just 1984 with some added dream sequences. A film doesn't need to have a fully original plot to be good.

The basic story is the same. Except for the dreams as has been said.
It shares a lot of themes and tropes, so it's not so stupid. I agree that it's definitely a distinct story, but it's not so hard to see their point.
Grave of the fireflies broke me as a teen.
Requiem for a dream was wild
This list is not complete without The Mist being on it. Its ending is the very definition of tragedy.
Mac at the end of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

I was hoping to see Se7en on this list. Never been more pissed and sad from a movie as I did with se7en

The last American virgin has the most soul destroying ending ever.
The crew of the Event Horizon were attempting to recreate and film the events of the movie X, with disastrous results...
Event Horizon is not that grim. The captain sacrifices himself but part of the crew survives.
The Departed deserves an honourable mention. The way Leo was taken out was so gutting!
The last minutes of Tom Hanks's Philadelphia are just devastating
Does he suffocate because he put on too many scarfs?
Want to be traumatized for life? Then go watch requiem for a dream. Very strong memorable.

Heartbreaking. When I went to the loo afterwards it was packed with tween girls crying.
The football match in Kez is excellent 😂

What’s even more eerie is that a few years later this movie basically happened in real life.
Imitation Game had a horrific ending and based on true events
Grave of the fireflies is shown by the teachers at my sons high-school in history classes after the coving of WW2
Requiem of a dream is the only film Marlon Wayne's could be considered a serious actor.
Working in comedy is just as hard as drama. It's silly to be surprised when an actor or actress known for comedy shines in a dramatic role.

I'm surprised the neither The Descent nor The Mist made it to this list. Especially The Mist.
Good list. Might add in "Lilya 4 ever." God, was that ever bleak.
Jacobs ladder should be on this list. You rout for the protagonist until it comes out it is only his final dream before death.

I don't agree with the idea Midsommar is a sad ending. I think it can be also seen as her finding her own power at the end.
