    I re-watched this video for inspiration! I recently bought a Duke 209 and put De Atrementis Document Black ink in it...but the sailor de mannen blows it out of the water. The Duke has a finer sweet spot for perfect ink flow. Plus with the Duke you cannot reverse the nib to draw thin lines like you can the Sailor. And the Duke tends to skip alot, especially when you draw a bit faster. The sailor's ink flow keeps up but the Duke does not. I might try putting Platinum Carbon ink in it to see if that makes a difference. And I have tried different papers from smooth to a slight tooth and it does not make a difference. But I got to say I am not impressed with the 209. Plus, since the Duke is so slippery it is hard to control the pen while drawing. I like the Sailor but sometimes I feel I am drawing with a razor blade. I wish it was a little less harsh on the paper with a thicker nib tip. I would like to try a Hero fude pen but you have a 50/50 chance of it working:( Oh well. Thanks again for this video.

    Great description of fude pens and their alternatives. I'm surprised you had a problem with your Duke 209. I have three of them and love them. BTW, the difference between the 40 and 55 degree Sailor pens is simply that you don't have to lay the 40 degree pen as flat to get the widest line. Do you know that you can buy the Mannen nib in a more conventional pen? It's called the Sailor Profit and looks like a standard black pen.

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 років тому

      Thanks Larry! Glad the Duke work well for you. 😊 I will have to try the blue Sailor to really feel the difference. 😉 See you!!

    • @hovawart16
      @hovawart16 3 роки тому +1

      Did you mean to say the other way around? I am trying to decide between the two and I thought the 40 degree Sailor pen would require laying the 40 degree down flatter (more horizontal). If you see this, I'd love an explanation.

    There is a 3rd Sailor Fude pen that is also Blue, ( with a pocket clip on the cap) it is called the Profit and it is the same nib as the green one, but somehow there is better ink flow. Ever since I got it, the green one sits in it's box.

    • @pbasswil
      @pbasswil Рік тому +3

      I've never had the green one, I chose the blue one because although I want the _option_ to get some thicker lines, I mostly like to draw thin lines. The blue's nib is bent at a different angle than the green's, such that you have to draw with a slightly more exaggerated, uh, _flatness_ to the page, to get your fat lines. That works for me - I don't have to hold the pen so vertical to get my usual thin lines.

    You can try this to improve your pen ink flow. Put some water in a cup a, put it in the microwave oven, until it get warm (not boiling) then dip your hero fountain pen nib in the hot water, to warm up the feed, then firmly press the nib against the feed with your fingers. It usually helps the nib conform better to the feed shape.

    I've been using this pen for a good while too. I have two - one usually filled with De Artemis Brown Document Ink and the other with the grey version of the same brand. I find them excellent for life drawing. I go straight in with pen without any underdrawing. The sketchiness of line means mistakes are easy to 'remodel'. My much posher TWSBI Eco gets nowhere near as much use!

    I know extremely good artists who love fude nibs, but I'm not a fan. It's a personal thing, but I get better line variation with flex nibs, and even with soft nibs. As often as not, I use dip pens, and I find these give far more line variation than fude nibs. I think there's good reason why so many manga artists use dip pens, rather than fude nibs, and the immense amount of line variation is one of those reasons. I admit, there is a learning curve for dips pens, but there's a curve with fude nibs, as well. Learning curve or not, I still think dip pens offer more than any other type of pen. But, again, it is a personal thing.

      It seems a great plan, Stacey! 👍 With watersoluble ink, in my opinion and experience, it's usually better to use only water rather than watercolors than can get muddy. • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 років тому +1

      Taco, Thank you for the compliments! 😃 In my experience, flex nib fountain pen (are you thinking about the Noodlers one?! 😬) are such a struggle. I mean, I think vintage expensive old ones can be nice but if you buy a Noodlers, for examples... hummm well, I wouldn't recommend it but, once again, that's just my opinion. 😅 Is it for drawing only or also for calligraphy?! I discovered recently an amazing kind of marker than works a bit like a flex nib (the tip bend) : the Pentel Touch Pen (It's also in my kit : kit.com/FollowingWhiteRabbit/my-favorite-sketching-drawing-calligraphy-tools). It's not extremely juicy so maybe better for rather slow calligraphy than fast sketching (plus the ink is not waterproof) but it's great. So, you got it, for sketching, I would definitely recommend a Sailor Fude rather than a flex : you will have less trouble and it even may be better for your sketching practice because you don't have to press the nib on the paper to get thicker lines and you can use the pen are more free angles. 😃 😉

    • @tacotrivia6465
      @tacotrivia6465 6 років тому

      Following the White Rabbit wow! You've read my mind! I was thinking of trying the noodler's flex nib for sketching. But from some videos I've seen, the ink flow doesn't seem to be as juicy as a fude nib? What made me wary of a fude nib is just knowing when to draw at the right angle! I guess it's all about practice and muscle memory. Thanks for your reply 😄😄

  • @andrewabney2129
    @andrewabney2129 4 роки тому

    I have not tried the De Mannen, or any Sailor fountain pen yet. I only have one Fude nib pen, and that is a Duke 551 Confucius that I adore. My only two complaints are that I wish it could hold more ink and that it isn't as easy to clean (even fountain pen ink can dry up in the nib), as my Pilot and Noodlers pens. As much as I love the Fude nib, I have found I can sketch faster with line variation using a flexible fountain pen nib. My current favourite is the Ahab from Noodlers. It can be used with a cartridge, a converter, and as an eyedropper pen. It is the smoothest sketching pen I have used to date.

      I really don't know what it doesn't seem to work on certain computers... Here is the direct link for the pen amzn.to/2KM9A4R but it really bothers me that you can't access to the whole list on my paints and favorite tools ! Did you try on another browser or on a device? 🤔

    I prefer a normal calligraphy nib holder. Don't have to worry about ink clogging inside a pen. But then again I almost never sketch with a pen and I never travel with it :)

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 років тому +2

      Hi Meda! Thanks for sharing! But I guess you use a flex nib which works with the pressure, rather than this kind of nib which works with angle between nib and the paper ? ☺️
      For Urban Sketching and travelling, dip pens are a bit discouraging. I sometimes tried but you are always to worry to make a mess with your ink!!!! 😅

      Following the White Rabbit exactly! Didn't know that's how they are called. I use them for calligraphy.

      Yeah, flex nibs are really nice for calligraphy. If you search for a more handy way to do it, I just discovered the genius Pentel Touch Pen. It's a kind of marker but you can bent its point, not the same way as a brush pen and it's wonderful with this type of calligraphy! I hope to be able to offer videos about calligraphy soon too. 😁

    Thank you for your wonderful videos! I just received a Duke fountain pen with a fude nib. The ink doesn't flow well and I was wondering it the problem is the paper I'm using-Strathmore Drawing paper and Canson watercolor paper. Can you please provide us with some paper recommendations? Thanks again!

    I like fountain pens too; but I try to stay calm about it!
    To my ear you sound French (?) so I'm surprised you prefer the Japanese pens.

    I have a rotring artpen and am not finding it to be very interesting or always reliable, despite only filling it with washable ink. After this video I ordered a Sailor fude ink pen and love it!! I'm drawing with it, sketching, doodling and even just writing. the ink flows so nicely and it hasn't faltered yet, even whilst writing with the nib flipped over. I may get my self a second one so I can have washable ink in one and permanent in the second. Thanks for the review it really inspired me!

    Good demo! What type of nib comes with it (fine, medium etc)? Which ink are you using with this pen? Where you bye the pen from?

    Your transitions from topic to topic can be a bit abrasive. And the reuse of B-roll when transitioning kinda hurts your video. If you had more B-roll rather than recycling it 5 times at the start of your video then using it again and again and again as a transition... it just doesn't work.

    I've been looking at fude pens for awhile, but have heard some didn't have a smooth ink flow, so never ordered. Thank you for sharing which one you have, I've received it and have played with it and I think we'll become close friends. Nice to add such a versatile fountain pen to my collection.

    Bonjour Anne, I have a Lamy Safari but I don't use it because I don't have a waterproof ink but thanks to your ink video, now I know which one to choose. I really like the Sailor pen and I like the line variations that it makes. I will for sure give a look at your link. Merciiiii :)

      You can buy a converter for the Sailor Fude which enables you to use water resistant inks of your choice. I bought two of these when purchasing my pen from Amazon. Living in Australia, I know your pain with shipping costs.

    I'm not very familiar with fountain pens, but I bought the green sailor fude a few months ago given all of the wonderful reviews. My problem is that I can't get a variation in thickness because the pen seems to skip. Sometimes I have to go to a scrap peice of paper and make a bunch of lines to get the ink flowing again. Any tips?

    • @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit
      @FollowingtheWhiteRabbit  6 років тому +1

      Hi Annevai, so, do you mean that the ink doesn't always flow really well in your fountain pen? Did you did to push a bit the ink in the pen with the converter? I do that sometimes (just be careful in the case a drop would feel from the pen!). It could be also a problem with the ink, if it sat a bit too long with your pen. Maybe, try to wash your pen, make it set in soapy water for a while, change the water... After it dries, put ink in it again and try to see if it's better? Hope that helps, see you! 😊 Are you sketching on smooth paper? The pen would skip more on watercolor paper...
