Forging a Wrapped-Eye Tomahawk Pt. 1

- I made this tomahawk from mild steel, and folded it to create the eye of the tool. I forgewelded a piece of high carbon steel between the two ends of the mild steel so that I can have more steel to work with and so that the tool can have a hard edge that will hold up to use. When drifting the eye, I accidentally made the eye too big at the bottom so that a regular tomahawk handle will not fit. This sucks but it will be fine. It just means that I will make a permanent handle instead of a removable one. In Part 2 I will make a handle, and maybe even sheath. Will see....

I wanted to show where the core steel met the mild outside.
I havnt been a smith for an insane about of time only about 6 years but Iv never really ever attempted to forge weld other than some steel cable I made some oyster knifes with iv tried today actually to forge a wrapped eye axe using some I belive mild steel I found laying in my junk pile with some 5160 for bit but no matter how I tried I could not get the mild steel to weld (many attempts with many different pieces) was wondering if any one could help me I'm sure I got it hot enough I used Flux cleaned it off but no stick
Make sure your welding surfaces are clean and flat. The less gaps, the better it’ll go. Also try to soak it at welding heat for a bit between welds.
