Orange 20 RT Review - Affordable Practice Amp Under $200

- This is my review of the Orange 20RT. This is an awesome little 20 watt solid state combo amp which features classic warm orange tone at a price that is perfect for beginner guitar players to tap into.
The 20RT is a 2 channel combo with both a clean and a dirty channel as well a three band eq for bass, mids and treble as well as built in reverb. This is all pumped out through a 8” speaker which despite its small size actually has a quite defined and punchy sound.
Due to its small size it’s perfect for any bedroom studio or apartment setting where you’re concerned with volume levels.

Thanks for the review bro! This little guy looks perfect for a starter amp in my small space
Thanks for your comment! Glad the review was helpful! Hope you enjoy the the 20RT!
The headphone simulation is truly amazing on this amp. I used to dislike it because it was too dark of a tone, and I'm still not the biggest fan of it without the headphones on, but with tweaking you really can get a phenomenal sound out of this. It's also built like a tank too. I keep wanting to replace it, but... I cannot justify selling it or finding an adequate replacement. Also takes pedals super well
Agreed! There are obviously better options in higher price ranges but this is a great little amp. And you're right it takes pedals super nicely!
Just bought one today thanks for review liked and subbed
@@smiley50ish congrats man!
Excellent review! Thanks! Skål!
Thank you!
Amazing amp, I purchased it year ago, what eq do you recommend for classic rock ? Queen, Beatles, zepellin. Great video
Thanks for your comment man! I appreciate it! To some extent EQ is really gonna depend your guitar. The best answer is play around with it yourself. Here’s a starting point tho. Dirty gain up around 3:00, Bass at 12:00, Mids at 3:00, Treble at 2:00. That’ll get you somewhere close. But you will need to play with it! Best of luck man! Please be sure to Subscribe!

@@kastorpantalondescocido9272 thanks man!
Really great video man..👍😁, i've just ordered online the crush 20 (without reverb & tuner) because the price different between 20 & 20RT is "really big" in my country & also i m in tight budget🤪😁. Hopefully the crush 20 can take pedals nicely..(sorry my english is bad..)..btw, reallyyyy great video bro..!!👍👍😁
Thanks so much man!! It’ll take pedals great honestly man! The onboard reverb while is convenient isn’t like “great” reverb at all. It’s okay, but definitely not necessary. You’ll find a lot better reverb stompboxes. I appreciate your comment man and hope you enjoy your amp! 😀🤘🏻
@@JoshuaKrell ok bro,thanks..!! Appreciate that..✌🤘
No problem man! 😀
Hey! Nice review! I only have one question, how does it handle pedals? I really like indie/alternative, you think I can get a surf-rocky type tone out of it with pedals?
Hey there! This little amp takes pedals very well actually and depending on what pedals and guitar and how you play, you can totally get a surf rock sound!
Have my eye on the Katana 50 but will check this one out. The first manufacturer that adds an effects loop for a looper in their affordable low W amp is going to swim in money.
Agreed man! Another alternative at a slightly higher and tube route is the Bugera V22. This was actually my first tube amp way back when they came out and they have fixed all the issues with it and given it more bells and whistles. It has an fx loop and is under $500. I just had 3 of my students pick it up in the last month at my recommendation and they LOVE it!
@@JoshuaKrell I'm definitely considering it!
@@JoshuaKrell While we're both here, have you tried the Bugera V5? I'm buying my first amp and I can get it cheaper than the Katana actually. It just sounds a bit muddy over youtube, I'll have to try it in person. Main draw to Katana is all the praise and versatility since I'm not looking to invest in a pedalboard now that I'm just starting. I'm mostly into blues/classic rock. Also considering a Fender Champion 40. So that's Crush 20RT, Champion 40, Katana 50 and a Bugera V5 (maaybe V22 if I push the budget)
The V5 is great man! I have used it quite a bit. It takes pedals well! It doesn’t have a ton of options on board but it is a genuine tube amp and is easy to break up for nice overdrive! I do have a student tho that has the Katana and he is obsessed with it! My guess is if you are just starting out it will likely be the best option with the most versatility. This is why modeling amps are great and I recommend them to students as you can start to identify what kinds of sounds you like so you can later down the road invest in the real thing!
Your intro sounds like something inspired by The Cure's boys don't cry
I could kinda see that. Similar structure. I have a different intro in my videos now haha!
You said this amp can be used in a rehearsal space, does this mean it’s giggable? This is going to be my first amplifier in a few years and i really want it to be loud enough whenever I’m playing with drums.
It might pull off a small show. But it’s definitely solid state and not tune. It’s loud enough to play along with drums when cranked high. And if you have solid PA you could mic the cabinet and totally use it in a gig able situation!
Great review 👍.how you define equalizer for clean tone?the reverb is Spring?
I would define it as very gentle rather than a pretty surgical eq. The reverb is a digital spring.
@@JoshuaKrell I didn't understand your answer
The EQ is not super powerful it’s more smooth, and the reverb is a digital spring reverb.
Just bought this amp. I’m a beginner guitar player so all I do is practice. Once I get better do you think I’ll regret not getting the 35RT that has the effects loop?
That’s a great question! Honestly as a beginner i don’t think you’re at a loss cause once you get more to the intermediate stage you likely won’t be looking in these range of amps!
I have the ID Core 20 and 10watts ,and last week I bought this Orange 20W .. well, Im still in favor for the OD1 of blackstar . But for the classic rock type ,this Orange is my go ahead. Yes , multi effects will not work for the ID Core.
Yeah Blackstar has always been more focused around the heavier side of things. I have found they typically suffer as an amp platform for pedals and in their cleans. I used to own a HT 40 from Blackstar tho. Super fun amp for heavy tones!
Good video! Pedals for Orange 20 rt. What used?
Thanks! It takes pedals pretty well! Depending on what you’re going for!
Hey! Which one do u prefer for home practice, the orange 20 or katana mini??
Hey there! I have a couple students who love their Katana mini. I would say there is probably a whole lot more versatility in the Katana than the Orange.
I found that There was hum when in the dirty channel setting, when the volume was over half. I didn’t know if was grounding issues with guitar or the amp itself.
I would say that’s pretty normal with the dirty channel on most amps. Especially if you get into tube amps as well. Both my old Mesa Boogie Triple Rec and my Voc AC30 were had quite high hum and hiss. My solution was a noise gate stomp in front of my rig.
Thank you for the input and advice. I love the clean sound, once I solve the hum issue, it’s an awesome all around amp.
You bet man! I appreciate it!
1:57 what song is this it sounds awesome!
Thank you! It’s not any particular song. Kinda me just goofing around. But listening back it does sound a little inspired by “Free Falling” with a more arpeggiated groove.
Great playing and tone. What Gain and EQ settings would you recommend for a Hard Rock/Metal tone?
Thanks man! I appreciate it very much! I would recommend scooping out your kids. Boost your Bass round 4:00 and treble around 2:00 or 3:00 and then Mids pull back to around 8:00 or 9. It’s gonna depend on your guitar too. So play around with that a little. That’s just a starting point!
Brother, is there any size difference between 20 and 20RT ? or the same size?
Hey man! I believe the main difference is the regular orange 20 doesn’t have reverb. The 20RT does. If onboard reverb is important I’d get the 20RT but if you think you’ll be getting stompbox reverb pedal down the road the 20 would work! Dimensions wise they are the same.
Oh also the 20RT has a built in tuner but most people have tuners apps in the smart phone these days, so that’s not essential by any means either
@@JoshuaKrell thank you for your review bro!! i just bought it today.it sounds really good with my squire classic vibe 60s stratocaster!!
Awesome man! So glad you like it! 🤘🏻
Can I play songs from Guns and Roses or Motley Crue with that amp?
You can definitely get some great classic tones out of this amp. A lot of they will also be determined in your guitar and how you play as well tho!
I got mine recently and it hums and buzzes a lot straight out of the box and I don’t know if it’s just naturally from the amp or if my guitar or the amp was broken, did you ever encounter this problem?
Oh weird! No issues here. After 2 years the input jack on mine is a little wonky but I have a ton of students plugging in and out every day throughout the week so kinda expected I guess. You might have a defective unit. Is it still under warranty?
@@JoshuaKrell yea it is but I looked into it and everything I saw said it’s just natural sound from the amp or the environment that gets picked up so I didn’t mind it much but now that I hear yours I’m wondering what is about mine that makes the noise
Some internal noise is often common on amps in this price range especially at high gain levels. It’s hard to know if yours is truly defective or normal noise. Mines fairly quiet.
@@JoshuaKrell i have a video if it happening right after turning it on if you mind me sending it to you in insta and you tell me if it’s normal or not
Feel free to send it over. @Joshuakrellmusic
Holy shit this sounds good.
Quite the little terror huh?! Especially for less than $200!
One question, can i bring this amp with motorcyle (im not the driver)
I wouldn’t. Even at this small size. It’s much too large I’d say.
What is best for strat hss the orange crush20rt or vox gt15?
The gt15 is a modeling amp… if it’s one of your first I’d prob start with that as it will have more built in sounds then the orange.
At 3:37:what was the setting on the those parameters? For the metal sound
Basically scooping out your mids. So pull the mids way down and boost your treble and bass. Treble is prob round 4 or 5:00 and Bass about the same. Mids pulled way back. Gain adjusted to taste based on how much breakup you want.
I quite struggle in finding a nice and smooth high gain metal lead tone . Pls . Help me. Because the high gain sounds too metallic or harsh sounding ,why is that?
@@JoshuaKrell yes I already done this . Treble at 3 I o clock, mids at 9 o clock and bass at 2 o clock . And gain at 2 o clock.. I'm using Ibanez S420.. I think the high gain sound of orange is not for my taste. I would just use it's clean channel for clean sounds
It depends on the guitar too. My Telecaster in video is gonna make the amp react much differently then yours too, as it has TV Jones style pickups which are much hotter than any humbucker I’ve used. In this situation I would pull back your mids a little more than 9:00 as most people’s ear is a little more sensitive to higher mid frequencies. I typically am playing also in my neck or mid pickup when playing through this amp generally speaking but I typically do in most amps as I prefer that buttery neck sound.
@@JoshuaKrell the gain at about 3 o clock has too much noise and just very distorted metallic sound .. do you think if I use a multieffects like the Zoom it will producer a much different and near the blackstar high gain modern metal?
Rt not neccessary for me
Got the basic one.not bad
They are great either one
Nice guitar amp.
It’s a good little one! Are you looking into this one? Or do you own it?
@@JoshuaKrell i own it
Nice man! Do you like?
@@JoshuaKrell i like it.
What style of music do you like to play man?
Hi bro,
Orange crush 20 vs Blackstar ID Core 20 - which one amp you prefer?
My guitar is Squier Affinity Telecaster.
I'm entry level btw..
Hey man! Thanks for your comment. I honestly haven’t used the Core 20 personally from Blackstar, but I’ve used and owned plenty of other models from Blackstar. They are a great company as well so both are great options! However, I’d personally go with the Orange just because if you are ever wanting to get into pedals down the road, the Orange model responds excellently to a pedal chain. From the videos I’ve heard of the of the core 20 I don’t get the same impression. Also, you get fewer EQ controls on the Blackstar which is also a big drawback. That’s my take!
Thanks for weighing in! Love your thoughts!
Over 200 in Canada...gonna get one fosho...
Is there a way to plug the amp to a mixer?
Unfortunately not. A direct out is something that typically get included in higher end heads and combos. There is a foot switch jack on the back. But yeah if you wanted to feed it to a mixer or audio interface for recording or live you’d need to mic the cabinet. Hope this is helpful!
@@JoshuaKrell can we connect the headphone out to a mixer?
@@nandu1770 No, I wouldn't recommend it!
Can I play rammstein and slipknot with the orange crush 20 amp?
Potentially yes although you might be better off with a Blackstar for that style on a budget.
yes amp is good but dirty channel is not suitable ... sound is hazy and thick.
Some people really like that specific sound. My guess is you are more into American dirty channel style amps as opposed to British tone wise. American vibe amps have brighter mids whereas British amps like Orange scoop out the mids tonally.
I thought he was playing powerwolf at the beginning
Just goofing around ha!
Under 200$ 😂 in Brazil it is more than 1000$... Sad
Woah! Are you serious?
@@JoshuaKrell Yeah man, for our coin of course.. one dollar is over five "Reais" (Brazilian coin), so this amp is a bit expensive (at least for me) even it is small haha.. getting guitar gear from this famous brands is hard for begginers here, we have to buy the national ones
I had no idea! That is very eye opening. What brands do you use in Brazil?
@@JoshuaKrell I'm not very much into it, but some items I searched in internet for begginers/intermediate guitarists like me, and are good, with the price between 500-1500 Reais are:
Brands for amps: Meteoro, Borne
For Guitars: Tagima, Condor
(I don't know too much, sorry haha, but I think that those are the best in these price)
These are the national ones, but for guitars we use too some Squiers, Sx, Cort, etc... But amps for the famous brands like Orange, Marshall, Fender, Laney, Vox, here are very expensive. For example, this amp Orange 20Rt with 20w is near the same price as an Borne with 100w.
But it is ok 😂 we do our things and make the sound feel good. Its not always that the logo is important. We have very good gear from this less known Brands
That’s good to know! Thanks for sharing man!
And you called it cheap?. My god.
These amps are under $200. I think I got mine for $160 when I bought it. You could prob find it used for around $100 or less.
😂😂😂
@Dan D there are some new cheap amp costs $35 :)
@Dan D u lost ur mind dude?. 20$ really? Who do you think I am .
i would not buy this amp based on watching this video just because i dont like you. theres much more to be said there , however: my decision was already made prior to watching this.
It’s comments like these that make the internet worthwhile. You have a great day lol
I don’t like cheese because socks go on my feet. I did walk once without socks but I saw some cheese and put socks on. I’ve never tried cheese. Cool story bro😂
