    Thanks for the great video! When I first started fishing the older fellas on a group trip showed me how to fish wet flies. It is one technique that can get you out of a jam on a slow day.
    Using this technique is also extremely effective when there is an emerging hatch. A great example is when trout are feeding on emerging caddis. They look like they are feeding on adults, but they are actually feeding on emergers. You can tell because they are jumping out of the water with aggressive takes as they chase the fast-emerging caddis up through the water column.
    One big tip I always liked was to fish 2 flies, one of which is off of a triple surgeon's tag. The tag that is left is the tag that points up the leader. By using this tag, you allow the fly to hang out off the leader and prevents it from wrapping on the leader during the drift.
    Thanks again for the great video!

      I just had this happen this weekend. Trout were rising like crazy. My inexperience said put a dry caddis on. But I was wrong. Thanks for the advice.

    It seems like part of the video when you demonstrate for the first time how to properly mend was cut out, I don't see an actual mend demonstrated, the line is obviously correct as it doesn't have a belly like the initial how to not just do one intial mend, but how you got the line to become properly positioned might better be understood if the entire drift from the moment of the initial cast and mends that got the line to that point were shown. Just a suggestion and thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

    M’y favorite style of fishing; the takes can be heart-stopping with larger fish.

    One of the things I noticed was how some of them were point there rod directly downstream on a low angle. This is the number one reason you will lose fish. First the fish can sometimes smash your fly so you will get break offs. Second you don't get a good hook set as the fly is taken from their mouth before they turn. Try either keeping the tip higher so there is a slight belly in line or a loop of line free under your index finger and let it loose on the take.

    Great topic. Nice presentation of one way to fish wet flies. (Strongly recommend Davy Wotton's "Wet Fly Ways" video, fantastic resource. ) The two wet flies discussed in this UA-cam vid are wonderful when nothing else is working.

    The first demonstration when he was casting across; was greased line; not a wet fly swing. Wet fly swing is quartering downstream. That's not to say wet flies can't be fished greased line; they can and it's effective. Starting greased line and letting it get pulled into a wet fly swing is also very effective.

    With wet flies, do you use a slow sinking leader or split shot to get the flies down?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  Рік тому +1

      Sorry for delay in responding. Usually you don't use weight or a sinking line. Just a 9-10 foot leader going to your wet flies. As they swing, then come to the end, slowly lift your rod and the wet flies will come up in the water column. To trout they look like emergers and they should eat them. Hope this helps

    Why do face downstream , when i fish wet fly ie north country/ Clyde style i always face upstream to allow the flies to behave naturally .May I suggest a look at Oliver Edwards video on wet fly fishing well worth a watch reems of info. By the way always enjoy your programs great stuff.

      I am a fly fishing guide in Argentina and I wrote a book called Fishing With Nymphs and Wets Flies in Rivers of Northern Patagonia.
      Fishing wets flies it is right to cast across river, leaving the line drift downstream and tighten the line when it is 45 degrees downstream. At that time the fly rises to the surface, doing a swing, performing known as Leisenring Lift and is usually the moment of strike
      Anyway, the caster of this video is worse than a beginner, horrible

    Is it bad to fish wet flies in still water?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  5 років тому

      No, they work there too with a slow hand retrieve, usually on an intermediate line or long leader in the shallows. Good luck and great question!
