Why did they show Lucille Ball as the opening shots here? She was a brilliant woman, her Desilu studios creating some of the greatest t.v. shows ever, Andy Griffith and Star Trek among them.
I don't think you can be "dumb" and be a quality actor. If anything, you need some degree of emotional intelligence in order to act. Acting is a talent that requires a solid-level of intellect. Off the top of my head, I question why Joan Crawford is on this list.

It seems to be that most of these people aren't perceived to be intelligent in the traditional, stereotype definition of what many people believe "intelligence" is supposed to be. Just because you're content to just entertain people, not get involved in politics, and embrace the simpler things in life dosen't make you unintelligent (often the opposite). Some of these Hollywood stars seemed intelligent enough to work the system, understand their fans, and purposely choose to embrace their stereotype personas rather than stick out their necks and fight them. Even if they weren't "formal intelligent"; they sure were intelligent in other ways.
Most of these people had above average intelligence. Jayne Mansfield had an extremely high IQ, and Marilyn Monroe, by those who knew her, was very intelligent. The one Hollywood star that I always considered dumb was Gene Tierney. I never understood her appeal. She looked dazed or hypnotized.
How well documented is that? Did Jayne Mansfield or Marilyn Monroe ever undergo psychometric testing? I don't think either woman was actually stupid, but Monroe's utter lack of professionalism (habitually showing up hours late, not knowing her lines, taking direction from her drama coach rather than the film's director) and Mansfield's attention grabbing antics made it difficult for either to be taken seriously. And their unprofessional behavior is something that cannot be blamed on misogyny. Both needed to put on their big girl pants if they wanted to be taken seriously.
Maybe John Wayne and Charton Heston were very conservative but they didn't insult those who disagreed with them the way so many entertainers do now.I read Wayne's interview. His racial statements were taken out of context,he never said he thought nonwhites should be second class citizens. He meant the no white citizens were just getting the proverbial foot in the door and it would take time to have a similar share of wealth and power
Well said. They were brilliant driven, genuine people. No wonder Hollywood today is so bankrupt of honesty and morals are warped, twisted, and 50 shades of grey now.
I wasn't a fan of Ronald Reagan at the time...but I do understand now why there were so many Reagan Democrats...the man spoke in simple terms and made people regardless of party feel good about themselves and the country...yes..there were some missteps during his presidency...but he did treat everyone with courtesy and respect...there was no name calling or insults...i do miss the Reagan years...and I'm a registered Democrat...
I believe most actors are not the brightest people. It's a weird profession to begin with. Yes, the ones who make it will make a lot of money but that's because what else were they gonna do?
What a joke, Charlton Heston was dumb? He was direct and genuine. If being sneaky, two faced and hypocritical is considered being smart, that is the Democratic party M.O.
Heston lacked vision so severely that he starred in one of the most gay-centric films of the 20th Century without realizing the subtext. I might not go so far as to call him dumb, but he sure as hell was naive.
Who in the heck wants to be a movie star after all they have to do selling their souls for a few moments of fame, is it really worth it. For me no no no😮
Bings big problem was a big drinker. Remember his Christmas specials with his new family. His son from first marriage said he wished was a father like that with him
A college education then and a college education today are 2 radically different things. During the golden era, we were 4th in the world in education, today we are 36th thanks to Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. College graduates post Obama election wouldn't know how to pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel. I was talking to a graduate that was going on to become a teacher the next day that couldn't find the Atlantic Ocean on a map, she thought Milan Italy was in Paris. These "sub-par" in education actors and actresses of the golden era would be Mensa grade geniuses compared to college graduates of today.
Anyone who was capable enough to make it in Hollywood and remain popular with charm and decent acting is not someone I would call stupid
So Victor Mature refused to just be one more actor off the Hollywood treadmill and did his own thing? Good for him.
He retired a millionaire at a young age and told Hollywood goodbye.

That photo with Sofia and Mansfield was classic
Sophia had class. Mansfield was an opportunist and an exhibitionist.
