In order for sick and disabled people to get back to work there needs to be employers willing and able to hire and pay them. For some reason they never discuss that side of the equation.

I was out basically for a year with a medical illness that kept me in the hospital for months followed by months of physical rehab. Fortunately for me my employer kept my position for me. I would recommend this young man think about something while looking for work when possible: volunteer. Get out of your home, volunteer at a rescue shelter for animals, volunteer to work at a food bank, if you're religious as I am, volunteer at a church. There are so many great organizations looking for help! Not only that, by circulating and introducing yourself, networking as it were, you can also interact with possibly your future employer. When I first got out of college nearly a half century ago, I had trouble finding work because the US was in the late seventies in a recession. Volunteering kept me sane and busy while I looked. Best of luck!

@@d.r.tweedstweeddale9038 No. You are. You've been deceived by our sick culture combined with 'social' media bling. Some of the greatest of individuals, throughout history, have been poor or at least not rich. This is the thinking of the Trump supporters in the US along with Kardashian fans. It was the great Eleanor Roosevelt who stated nearly a century ago that no one can take your dignity or self worth without your permission.

      Of course it’s not.
However, long term unemployment is detrimental to mental health. Adults (generally) do much better when they have purpose and routine, there are a lot of people who never get dressed/don’t shower regularly because they have no reason to leave the house for weeks, months or even years!

How about me I've been out of work 20 years. I am on the autism spectrum, with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. My sleep schedule is all over the place due to pain and other things. I struggle to read and follow text, my sensory issues make it difficult to listen to sound on a headset or a phone, and this is just a small part of the issues I have to deal with everyday...Who is going to employ someone like me.

I was once asked by one of the very helpful " work coach" managers why I hadn't applied to be a delivery driver (for a well known supermarket).
So, after mentioning that due to the current insomnia alone, after about 2 hours sleep in 3 days. "Do you think it's a good idea?"
Glad to say, I was not forced into applying.

I suffer with really quite bad depression and anxiety. I very luckily work for the NHS, have done for around 25 years. I was signed off by my doctor during COVID for 5 months. Previously to that the most I'd been off work for was around a week or so with a bad back. This was completely new to me. The NHS gave me the support I needed, the time off to deal with it and then free counselling. I know that's not available for everyone and it costs a lot of money, but the point is we really need to start thinking about this sort of thing. We need people in work and to be healthy in their work. Support is definitely needed.

For decades those that have disabilities that are clearly visible struggle with how the DWP treat such, so those with invisible, or not so obvious presenting disabilities have an even worse time of it. The whole system is predicated on the fear of re assessment and sanction. Its the State being cruel becuase. they know they can get away with treating the vulnerable this way.

Lost count of the amount of times I've seen this playbook by the mainstream media when it comes to sickness benefits. Just vox pops of people who are now going back to work, or self loathing people who were on sickness benefits and now agree the government need to be even tougher on sickness benefits. It's grotesque.

@@detritiv0re144I'm one of those people. I've had ME for 28 years, I can't work. It's deliberate they never talk about that, why? Because it's not about that, and they don't care - it's all about saving money. The economy is all politicians care about when it comes to sickness benefits. The lives of the people who need them to exist are a very distant second.

Work isn't enough. People need jobs that allow them to use their skills and abilities, and also pay them sufficiently to exist in modern British society - £40k or more at a minimum.
I've worked so many jobs in my life that didn't pay more than £26k, and it's hardly worth it. Got my first real job at 30 - actually pays me a living...and the difference is night and day. As the man says, it's like having value in this world.

That's the beauty of EU freedom of movement, if the town/country you live in doesn't have any opportunities you move somewhere better. If the negatibe atmosphere grinds you down, a change of scenery will clear your mind. I've lived, worked, and studied all over Europe and it never takes me more than a month or two to find work. I'll never understand people who voted to leave the EU.

Who is this foolish and this insignificant? True, true. I am saying this. It diminishes my value and my respect. But, brother. I swear to God that I did not say this, kiss your boots. I was so hungry that my conscience no longer allowed me to let her go and ask us for food. I kiss your boots, brother, and I ask you by God Almighty and in the Book of God, brother, I kiss your boots, brother. Don't worry about us, brother, even a thousand Yemeni riyals. We can buy us a kilogram of minutes, brother. Have mercy on him. He who is in the show will have mercy on you. He who is in heaven will have mercy on you. Brother. This is my WhatsApp number 00967.713348473. Whoever can help us, message me on WhatsApp. We will send him the full name. He will refer us as much as he can. May God reward you well. God knows that the owner of the house takes us out in the street between... We have no mattresses or blankets to keep us warm from the cold. Everything has been drowned by the rain, and we have no one but God. Then you, my brothers, kiss your boots. Do not let me feel disappointed. Help us with whatever you can. Is it satisfactory to you that we We live in this place. We are girls and we have no one. Our father died in a car accident.
