Interesting fact: One of the main writers, Takeyuki Suzuki was the one that brought the main plot Idea, based on the Japan orphans left in China/ separated from their parents and raised by chinese families at the end of world war II. At the 80's there was political moviment about repatriate them on Japan, but they sufered on adapting to Japan after so many years and were not very welcomed, were target of discrimination. So he and Soda translated all these feelings/conflicts Into a kids show. Só , since the very beginning they already had on mind the anti-flash phenomenon and the fact that they would have a bittersweet ending. Also another fact: Galdan actor also player Buba and got some enjury, thats why he enters late on the series as Kauler main partner.
I just want to say that you guys have made me get back into watching Toku. I’ve been a fan for quite a while but I began to pay less attention to Toku in the last couple years or so, but watching your videos has encouraged me to get back into it and I’m currently rewatching Garo season 1 since I never seem to finish it even though I’ve tried watching it about 3 times and just stopping for no reason. I decided to watch this season based on my own personal choice. I’m genuinely happy I did and I did watch Changeman soon after and I have to say this is a step up compared to Changeman. The story was more engaging and the characters were the best part. I feel as though Flashman has no bad episodes really and I want that Prism Sword. The ending yeah was really heartbreaking and sad as yes they won but at what cost. They can never be Earthlings again all because some Doctor wanted to experiment on stuff. It’s just so sad.
The best Sentai imo Funny enough, I have the opposite opinion when it comes to the comparison with Changeman. I like Changeman, I think it has a strong start but really begins to drag in the middle between Giluke being written out and coming back, and then ends strong in it’s last 10 episodes while Flashman starts strong and continues building up throughout. As for Bun’s character, while it's tragic that Jin being the oldest has gone longest without regular human contact he at least does have memories of his family and of Earth, whereas someone like Bun doesn't. There’s this air of innocence that surrounds Bun so it makes sense when he’s susceptible to simple childish pleasures like in the episode with the balloon or falling for a villain’s scheme like in the episode with the biker gang but it’s thanks to his childlike innocence that he has a big heart which makes a lot of the more emotional moments of the show hit hard. It thanks to him being the youngest that his yearn for finding his family hits the hardest out of everyone in the team. He’s like a scarred lost child looking for a place of belonging, trying to make that connection to someone on Earth. Bun gets so much growth throughout the show as you can really see him mature and grow up over the course of the show especially since in the beginning he was the youngest and most immature of the team. And the show accomplishes this through his many interactions with other characters wether it be the Tokimura family, that biker girl, the widowed mother, or even one of the Alien Hunters on the verge of death. And even despite him becoming more mature over the coarse of the show he still retains that big heart of his when it comes to doing the right thing, as shown when he put aside his hatred to help the aforementioned Alien Hunter which ended up being worth it since he ended up giving his life for Bun. As for Kauler, it wasn’t that he wanted to betray everyone. He was loyal to Mess from the beginning, it wasn’t until Keflen betrayed him which was a conflict building up over a few episodes of them beefing, that Kauler betrayed them.
My points aswell. Since they were our first and main sentai contact on Brazil, even in my 5-6 years old, Flashman story really caught me more from the get go. Only Lou really suffered here, the others had their development/presence strong. One more thing: The Buba x Red Dragon comparison/equal on Flashman is actually the Red Flashman X Kauler final fight. Not only for the similar shooting but for Kauler really be Jin mains rival. Wanda had his thing with Jin because of their earlie fight when he had his wing broken and because of his big ego, but from Jins part, once Kauler showed, Wanda wasnt a main concern at all. That episode where Jin and Kauler are tied together and fought on the rain/at night? That says It all. IMO, Flashman weakest moment is between 21-26 ish, but overall, is very strong and the final arc between 43-50 is one of the best.
The aesthetics of Flashman are the best in the 80's. First off, the suits are my personal favorites as they literally makes them a Sentai Air Force in the BEST way, the machines are foldable when going into their robot forms making me wish other sentai machines had that function, and they have SUPERBIKES, and I've loved looking at those since the first time I checked them out. A wonderful way to celebrate 10 years of Super Sentai with their first outer space motif making me think of a team of colorful Star Wars X-Wing pilots. I don’t know when you’re getting to it, but I’m gonna say this now because it’s next in terms of Sentai: good luck with Turboranger. I’ll defend Fiveman (and probably will defend it in the comments section of your review of it) but I couldn’t get through two episodes of Turboranger because it was just that DUMB!
Yep, Fiveman is ok but Turbo is a challenge.. But now they just covered the best of Showa era: Bioman, Changeman, Flashman and Liveman so (IMO Flashman and Liveman competing for the best with Bioman and Changeman close)....
I would think Flashman imo is PEAK super Sentai for me. The show alone is phenomenal. Like Dynaman to Jetman to me are probably the main Showa Super Sentai era I enjoyed. Turboranger, Maskman, Goggle Five, and Fiveman are my least favorite Sentai installments written by Hirohisa Soda. Fiveman was last Sentai that was written by Hirohisa Soda and it shows.
