- I was featured on an episode of True Life on MTV and it was one of the worst decisions I've ever made. I feel like an idiot for agreeing to it and thinking they would portray my life how it actually is. Thanks for always supporting me, even through crap like this!

As someone who KNOWS YOU and GETS YOU and has SPENT TIME WITH YOU, I'm sorry for how shitty this situation is, because you're so legit. You're one of the realest, down to Earth, nicest people. I haven't seen the episode, but I don't really need to. You are one of my favorites for a reason.

If its any consolation, I watched the episode and it did not sway my thoughts of you in any way. The struggles you go through along with Josh are very understandable. You guys are human. Its hard. I'm sorry it made you feel bad. We all know what MTV is about nowadays. They look for the drama. You're awesome though so, keep your head up. You're an inspiration to so many youtubers myself included!!

I almost cried during this vlog. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-camrs, I love you Colleen!
I wanted to post this so that you could see that you are not alone. I was also asked to be on MTV's true life. I spoke with the woman on the phone a lot about what the show would be like, and hounded her with questions about how it would make me appear. Her answers were so vague, and shady, that I got a really bad feeling from them. I also hated the fact that I was supposed to act natural in front of a camera, when that's the least natural feeling in the entire world. I turned them down, because I knew that this would happen. They assured me that it wouldn't, but I guess this video goes to show that they are just a bunch of liars. I am so sorry that you went through that, TV is bullshit. I hate that they can make you look like a crazy person, or an insane bitch, after just one small snippets of your life. I know I would have come out looking crazy, because I have those moments. Anyone who watches your channel or knows you in person will know that you are not a bitch, and that you are not always arguing and fighting with your boyfriend. MTV can suck my giant balls. They should be ashamed that this is what they do to people. Just makes me wonder how MTV so called "celebrities" are in real life. I bet they are normal people too , that have been made to look really bad. . Love you Colleen. You are amazing and we all know that.
don't be too hard on yourself! you didn't come across poorly at all. it was actually really refreshing to see you behind the scenes and how hard you work for your fans. the people who love you and your channel know the real you. don't sweat it Colleen.

How awful of them to twist things to make you look bad, some decisions are sometimes not the right decisions, but we have to make bad choices to learn from them, all of your subscribers love you and know what you're truly like, this will just be something for you to learn from Colleen and we all still love you!

She's human. We are all human. We have good days and bad days. If someone came and filmed us and only aired bad days, we would all seem like horrible people. Colleen trusted MTV and they let her down. I literally hate to see her cry because she is just an all around happy person. Shame on you MTV, shame on you!
I know it's old news at this point, but the other day I saw the episode for the first time, and was almost in tears watching how they portrayed you guys. MTV sucks, and neither one of you - or anyone at that matter - deserve to be treated like that. I'm so sorry that that happened.

Thank you for telling the truth about this. I had no idea MTV was doing an episode like this, I probably won't watch it, but I really admire that you have spoken out about the way they filmed and edited it.
So you string together and edit all the good parts of your life in a compact video. MTV strings together and edits all the bad parts of your life into a video. Sounds to me like you both do the exact same thing. Both are illusions.

My rant about this episode after just watching not even 10 minutes of it:
Firstly, I only jsut discovered Colleen a couple of days ago (as just Colleen, not as Miranda), and literally she's now one of my favorite UA-camrs, so I just feel like I have an opinion on it all.
I actually think Colleen fought the script pretty well because she's really doing her best to sound just agitated by all the things she has to say, and she's not being all bubbly and actually acting; everything is very monotone, and I hope that is what she was trying to do, because if it was, then she accomplished her goal of fighting the script; plus it sounds like they chopped things up, and it might be my internet connection, but things don't sound on point or flow very correctly, not to mention, all that she's saying just sounds like BS the way they wrote it for her, and it's obviously made for people who have never been on UA-cam and have seen her vlogs, because it's obviously not how she would act or sound. Plus, on the part of them fighting about Colleen's work, it's not like she's Enid Blyton or something who literally neglected her children just to write and answer fan mail and quite frankly believed that her fans were her best friends, and Enid was like in her 30s and 40s saying these things (I'm a writer myself, and while I think it's great that she was so dedicated, she was a terrible person who was stuck in the fantasy world of her fiction); Colleen obviously knows the difference between she and Miranda and she has a great balance on her life. What is more, they must've had to really cut it because there are a lot of instances where they bounce between dialogue and it dosen't flow correctly, so maybe some of their fights are horribly misrepresented because they cut it up so much. I'm only in the first part of the episode, but it still makes me hot to think how they've done Colleen like this, plus they didn't even touch down on the fact that Josh also has a UA-cam career, so it's a little too biased (as of right now). But like she said the episode takes from all the bad moments in their life and makes them out to be bigger than they actually are. I think that maybe MTV should turn the camera on themselves sometime and have their very own producers and directors animate their life the same they do to great people like Colleen and Josh, because then they'll understand how wrong what they're doing is, and understand that they should have stayed a music station and never have started doing reality television. Maybe they'll do a sequel where they pull Shane or PewdiePie (if they haven't pulled the latter already of course) and we can see just how much worse they can do; stopped watching MTV a while ago, but this reawakens a deep anger within me.

To add to an already long comment, I guess I should remark on the second act of the episode, where to _do_ comment on Josh's channel, the only problem that I have is that, I'm having a hard time believing that they're feeling very pressured to make drama because of the cameras, and it's hard for me to wish that they could do it on their own cameras on their own grounds, but we all know why that won't wok. As said before, they do make Josh out to be this jealous, baby and it's just agitating me because they ignore the whole reality aspect of _reality_ television. Also, to comment on Brady: very superficial, very ignorant. I'm not sure if he has a channel or something, but if Colleen got a script, then he also got a script, and therefore, we don't actually know his true feelings about the whole thing; what is more, I feel like people who rely that heavily on social media without any aspirations (Colleen has social media because it's part of her career and her job, and as she says genuinely, she wants to connect with her fans). I only use my Instagram to post actual pictures of objects and things because a) I'm too ugly for selfies, haha and b) it's just annoying to post pictures of yourself and things of the like, at least 100% of the time that is, and if you feel like you _have_to post because you're afraid of losing a few followers, and I don't think you should be on there in the first place, because it's much more like you're stroking your ego. I can say, though, that I have somewhat of a similar experience with my parents, because I spend a lot of time writing, even during the school year, and its a constant, 'Writing isn't your main focus right now, school is', even though for me it's kind of fifty/fifty because I plan on being that Bestseller or Pulitzer winner in the future, so that means just as much dedication to school as to writing. But, I don't really know because a) I'm not huge on the internet in anyway, b) I'm not that crazy about social media (I'm really only a devout member of UA-cam and I can't go a day without it) and c) I haven't had a reality TV show shoving a camera up my nose all the time.

On a positive note, you both have a wealth of video that completely places the MTV segment in a vacuum and counteracts any negativity. Don't worry, your subscribers are intelligent enough to KNOW that You Tubers show what they think their subscribers might like to watch i.e. it's not a reality show :) (even 'reality shows' aren't REAL). We're not looking for a 'day in the life of' either of you, but just an opportunity to laugh or be entertained for 10 minutes, by those we THINK we know :) Hindsight is 20/20 vision; just chalk it up to experience. I am a huge fan of both of you and just saw like a 10 minute clip of the episode, it was horrible. You two are great role models to me of what a good couple and a healthy relationship is. I can easily tell what things were scripted because they didn't sound at all like you. I know that it has all blown over by now (almost a year later) but you are both so funny and wonderful and any real fan wouldn't be able to take that episode seriously! You guys keep making videos forever please!!!
I watched the MTV bit after watching this video, and they didn't do you justice in the slightest. I met you on one of the VidCon days they actually showed bits of in the segment, and you were nothing but sweet and humble and genuinely interested in what I was saying; you were the one person I really wanted to meet and thank at the conference, and I am so glad I was able to do that.
What I hope all of us realize is that you are a person with good days and bad, and I think it's pretty obvious that MTV highlighted the bad in the episode (even to people who aren't previously familiar with you). And besides, any investigation into your videos at all will show that you are so kind and loving and appreciative. Fuck that show, and the people who think they know someone's entire character based on 20 minutes of poorly constructed video clips on the network that graced us with 16 and Pregnant. You inspire me every day, and that shitty TV show did absolutely nothing to change that.

You are one of the most sincere and mature people I know of. I look up to you and Josh both for your relationship and how you are as individuals and I've actually learned a lot from the both of you. It wasn't that bad really.. I can see why you would feel bad about being portrayed that way, some of it felt like it was fake, but the end of the show was actually very positive and very sweet, you actually came off as a really good person so I don't really know why anyone would call you a bitch

So I know that this video is older but I really want to say this. I've been watching you, Colleen, for a long time now and I can't get enough of your colleen's corner. I look forward to your videos each week because I enjoy watching your videos so much and you are such a happy person and you enjoy life to the fullest. I understand that not all situations in your life are easy or positive but you make the most of it. I just now watched this video and looked up the True Life episode and would like you to know that it was ridiculous. I could tell that they had changed a lot of it and made it look like you were a spoiled "coincidentally" famous youtuber. Just know that regardless of what media will do to edit the persona that you have or try to dictate how the image of you is portrayed, the people that honestly enjoy you and your videos will always love you and respect your life. I'm so sorry you guys. I always suspected that reality TV was that way, but I never knew any of the subjects of the show until now. I think I speak for a lot of the viewers when I say that those of us that have been following you for a long time have a basic understanding of your personality and the truth of your life (even though as you said you only show the more positive and uplifting moments). For a show to invite you on just to tear you down is complete lunacy. Don't think for a moment that people will be swayed by this portrayal of you and your relationship.

The first time I ever even heard of Miranda Sings was from that episode of True Life. I remember being very curious what happened to you and Josh after the episode aired and because of that, I began to follow you on UA-cam and was pleased to see that you hadn't split. I am sure it was hard to watch MTV just show the negative, but I am sure that there are others like me who are now some of your subscribers that know about you and Josh because of that episode and have watched your relationship grow and most recently watched you get married. I know this is an old post, but I hope you have been able to find the positive in that experience because all of the new subscribers that you gained from that hiccup have been able to gain so much positivity between both yours and Josh's channels.

Just FYI, the film crew and editors are completely different groups of people in the world of television. A cameraman usually has absolutely no control over how a show is edited. So, the person filming you may have had the best of intentions, and they could be disappointed in the final result too! You never know!

I'm watching the episode right now. You can literally hear in their voice when they're reciting a script or being pressured into saying something. I'd never heard of Brady before, but I feel like they're exploiting him, he's in 10th grade. I don't get how his parents agreed to that. Edit: I'm actually disgusted right now, but it gives a lot of insight into how fake reality television is.

Lenda Thompson Yeah, it's nothing but exploitative trash. Even the normal moments where they're just interacting the way they do feel fake. Since the 1930's filmmakers have used the Documentary form to capture moments of real life with authenticity. MTV and the whole Reality TV continuum have succeeded in making real life feel artificial and unreal. And that's when they're NOT making people seem worse than they are.
Dont worry your true fans know how tv can twist any situation to suit them. We can all say if a tv crew followed us around that they would no doubt get bad times too. We have to remember your human too and going to have arguments etc.

oh my god waaaaaait colleen if you ever can't make a colleen's corner or something like that one day, then don't, and hang out with josh! we understand more than you think! and yes i am saying this in response to the episode that i just watched and i know you said they made you look bad and stuff, but im just responding to the "real" (as real as it gets) part, not the voice over. so if that part in the episode is true and that happens a lot, then just dont make a video one day! at least on your psychosoprano channel because to be honest i feel like we as your fans are a little more real and understanding than miranda's fans, which can sometimes be random people that pop in and out, whereas we are your devoted fans here on this channel and i think we'd understand if you cant make a video once in a while :)

Unfortunately the media is an extremely screwed up industry. Companies are only interested in their own success, so they alter other peoples lives to make their work seem more interesting to viewers. Don't blame yourself cause you really didn't know it would turn out like this. Your true fans know who you really are, and through your vlogs (that we know for sure aren't scripted) we see that you are an amazing person. Don't let the handful of haters get you worked up, cause you have thousands of other fans that will always support you. In the words of Miranda, "haters back off!" :)

I applaud you for having the guts to make a video about a topic like this AND handling it with grace and dignity. Honestly it has made me love you so much more after this video! I watched the episode and It made me like you more. it shows me your not just a person who is fake and always happy you know. you are a real person and everyone goes through things. they might now always be good things but hey that's what makes us human!!!!! I LOVE YOU COLLEEN!!!!!!!!!

What's really horrifying is how the parts they film when y'all are arguing, or just being normal, feel fake. They have taken real life and made it fake. It's because of the editing, the camera movements, the rhythms, it just feels like Jersey Shore, the Real World, the Bachelor, and all of the other useless reality tv that's identical to what came before it. And yet, when y'all film your vlogs, it feels 100% real and authentic. What the MTV Reality Show Documentary Style has done is make real life seem unreal, and for that it needs to go, and fast. The world would be a much better place if the Real World had never existed.
So I watched that episode. The whole time it didn't feel right with all of the editing and sadness. I know all relationships aren't always full of chocolate chip cookies, but the editing completely focused on this unhappiness. I made this really really really long comment about it on someone else's page (it wasn't like a page dedicated to Grumpy Cat, but someone uploaded the episode). Long story short, it's been a year and you've come a long way. You met Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld, and Martin Short. Miranda has a million baes.
Regardless of what people say, you're going to keep doing well.

I just watched the episode online and you know what, screw them! You're allowed to feel bad about this because they took advantage of your trust. I watched a couple of minutes of the mtv footage until the first voice over came on and I knew it wasn't Coleen talking, I have been subscribed a few weeks and I know that she doesn't act like that. I couldn't watch the rest it was too annoying

I just watched it and I can 100 percent say that you seem like a good and nice person. They made Josh look very needy but that was mostly through voice overs and choppy bits of conversation and you could tell you weren't getting the full picture. I would be more upset about the episode being boring and obviously staged then how you looked in it, and that's clearly their fault and not yours. Any sort of hate you got is just because you'd have to be really vapid and ignorant to be part of that shows fan base, I mean what can you expect from True Life viewership.

I just saw it the video, and I just hear from the way you speak, that those moment were fake... I just love you more after watching it! Because you are just people, and people make mistakes. What we saw of you and Josh, those moments, that happens in relationships. MTV is just looking for drama and stuff people are gonna like. But most of the people who know you and Josh, are not liking it. We understand that you feel bad about it, but you don't have to, because the people who really love you and are real fans, just love you more and more. I'm just impressed about the way you handle life and stuff. Also for Josh. And for Josh, he has enough people who love him (including me!). I love Colleen and Josh and the whole Ballinger family :) I watched this and the MTV thing and was so sad to see how they edited things, I have been on bed rest for 8 weeks and have therefore binge watched all of them and I just want you to know that sometimes we make bad choices and sometimes we are forced to do things we don't want to, but you are one amazing person! I actually watched the episode of True Life that you were on and that is what brought me to your youtube channel. I actually found you very interesting on the show and I don't think it is as bad as you think. I think anyone watching would understand that couples have arguments. Since the episode of True Life I have been addicted to your youtube channel, so I think it probably brought you more fans than you realize. I am also subscribed to your Miranda Sings channel along with Rachel, Josh and a few of your friends. So I personally am glad that you were on the episode of True Life or I would have never found such entertaining videos! ♥
This is weird
Brady: gets moree famous because of mtv true life, and what is shown about him is mostly true. He als posted a video on his channel about how well mtv has affected him and made him happier, and many girls like him bc the show.
Miranda:negatively affected by true life, ends up looking like a jerk, although she is not. She posted this vid about how mtv ruined everything and her regrets. Some people even hate her bc what mtv did.
I like both Brady and colleen, but seriously this show needs to be called One True Life and One Fake Life.

I agree that they made you both look really bad- but honestly they made Josh look worse. He seemed like an overly sensitive beeotch that was either using you for subscribers or jealous of your fame- and obviously he is happy for you and supportive. I hate how gullible people can be, because your true fans like us will know you aren't a bitch and he isn't one either! So f*ck MTV and people who were rude toward you... they aren't your fans!
