Virgil in my humble opinion is one of the greatest musicians of his generation.
The drum groove at the beginning is killer alone. So many incredible things going on from everyone on this tune. You have to listen to different parts each time to catch it all.

Real dynamics in a rock song... not crescendo all the way to the end, not just loud and soft sections. Also beautiful control of timbre in the vocals. Echoing Holdsworth in the keyboard--extraordinary.

While everyone is a mindboggling genius I feel the real MVP here is the vocalist. How the fuck can one even sing on such complex, constant key signature shifts?!?! Holy shit this song was insane!
Irwin Thomas aka Jack Jones is an amazing singer and also killer guitarist. He was also in a band with Virgil in the 90s in Australia called Southern Sons. He was also John Farnham's backup vocalist when was only like 19-20.

Virg still putting out the most interesting and forward thinking prog, this is so sick.
i don't like ANY modern prog (well, maybe SHINING [they do "black jazz"!!] from Finland? and FOUR STROKE BARON)...(I like some of Sons Of Appollo too) ... but THIS IS REALLY GOOD. They got it all... EXCEPT any visual style, which matters, b/c we like a band that LOOKS LIKE A TEAM.

Virgil is a fuck$#%ng monster legend. I´m not into extremely technical music, but can listen to any project that Virgil is in for milleniums and could still enjoying his music.
THIS IS “PROGUSION!” The new genre for 2020!
my favorite new genre for this next decade is "Stoner Prog" (!) (it means SLOPPY, MESSY, wild prog!) -- you get all the artsiness and innovations of art-rock... without ANY of the over-rehearsed-ness of most prog. (Plus, almost all stoner prog bands are improvised! All high-wire stuff.) (Even the metal bands in that genre are improv!!) In fact, I might argue stoner prog is the best genre ever, quantifiably, b/c it has very high (ba dump bump) standards. ex: you can't be in the genre unless your band has a GREAT band name (b/c originality, smarts, balls, wit, etc, are PREREQUISITES of the genre!). You can't dress ordinary. Can't have an ordinary stage name. Most use fretless basses, to MELT the music more!
And so on. Too many great ones to list, from the surf-prog (!) of Dick Flaccid & The Viagra-nauts (!!) to the uke-shredder-led power trio JERUSALEM WITCH (get it?) to the scuz-pop sounds of THE SILVER ASSHOLES -- another rule of the genre is you can not copycat. THE PROBLEM is another rule of the genre is to hate social media. They just throw house party shows and fun stuff like that, and have no ambitions to get rich. FUCK!

YES, this is actually REALLY good (I hate almost all modern prog bands)...but if they got a great band name (ask me for a long list!) and an INTERESTING VISUAL LOOK, they could be HUGE.

I think VIrgil has improved his skills in both composition and drumming technique 10x since he auditioned for DT... can't imagine a world without this stuff now.
@@newvultraz "VIrgil has improved his skills"... he was already a beast on drums and a great composer at this time. Fortunately Virgil didn't join DT. They make the same thing again and again since the last 10 years, creativity is gone.
Virgil was the most advanced drummer out of all the people who auditioned, hands down. But for some reason they chose Mangini (who is also awesome and was chosen because he did the best performance for that)

I disagree. think about it. He's not the right fit for the band. Age and personality. Virgil needs to lead the direction of a band. The only thing he could ever do was start his own band. If he joined DT, It would have come to a head at some point. And they would not get any of the drummers to come back and take his spot. They chose the right drummer for the band. Virgil had his own direction to go.

Great score with Chris Clark ...saw him w/Brand X. As controversial as this may sound -- with Alex Machacek on guitar, and Kenny Grohowski on drums -- it was the best sounding BX lineup, ever. (... and I mean no disrespect to Robin Lumley or John Goodsall.)
Chris Clark was fabulous ... unreal series of shows. What a great keyboardist.
Finally, we got ourselves a promised work of art! Can't wait to listen the whole album!
Edit: after listening the whole album... how can the entire album sound so awesome? With complex yet very melodic soulful playing and gorgeous Jack Jones vocals, this masterpiece of an album was worth of these long days of waiting!
