This song is part of my being. I’m a child of the 70s and 80s so I’ve loved it for a long time. As much as I love Judas Priest this song just makes me feel whole. So special to see you listen to it for the first time. ✌️🇨🇦
I always loved this song. It had such a unique sound and feel. Not sure how to describe it. I was a kid when it came out and just loved it. Always have. That’s how it is with music and art. Sometimes you just don’t know why you like it. You just do.
George's "All Things Must Pass" triple album was a masteriece. It was like he had all these songs pent up that couldn't make it on to Beatles' albums (largely due to John and Paul, but that's another subject) suddenly sprayed out as if from a firehose. And you're right, George was the best Beatle.
Among my favorite songs by George. I get a deep sense of peace and renewal by listening to his work, a comfort all the more essential in troubling times like these. His was a unique, rich, and deeply spiritual life, but, like his bandmate, John, one cut too short!
Great reaction to a great song. "Keep me free from birth" refers to the Hindu/Buddhist doctrine of reincarnation, where you keep returning to earth to be born until you break the cycle and achieve liberation. So you want to escape the cycle of birth and death.
At the Concert for George, a marvelous tribute concert for George after his passing, there’s a wonderful version of this song by Clapton, Dhani, and company thats well worth the listen, y’all
Doug. great reaction. I"m a Liverpool lad and like you Harrison has always been my favourite from the four, though it's a close call for me. I bought Living in the Material World when it came out (still got it). I was in the City centre on the night of the day I heard George had died. I felt compelled to walk the few hundred yards to Matthew st where there was a book of condolence in the Cavern (over the road from the original) that I felt compelled to sign. Respect your work and wish you and yours Love and Peace at this time of year.
As a guitarist I have always had a profound respect for George’s ability and his musicality. His contribution to many Beatles songs is under-appreciated, bringing just enough sophistication and nuance to make the songs more memorable and interesting. He mastered alternate chord voicings very early on. He frequently uses arpeggiated chords (see “And I Love Her”) and short riffs while giving the vocalist room. For example, in “Help!” the 3 note phrases in the chorus are very simple, but the song wouldn’t be the same without them. And then just to make sure you’re paying attention he throws in the fast burst of notes before the verse begins. And of course, his slide guitar technique is untouchable by mere mortals.
@@RobCorin-z7c Klaus also produced one of Badfinger's albums. Two members of Badfinger wrote "Without You", so maybe that explains how Nilsson came to record it.
Eric Clapton was once asked if there is anything he can't do on guitar that he wishes he could. Eric answered, he wished he could play slide guitar like George Harrison. Free from birth is a god spiritual thing.
Thanks for this one Doug. You've now got to do more of his solo work because you are missing out on some wonderful music (IMHO better than the Beatles era).
What a great song. I've heard the song before, but I haven't heard it in....not year, but decades. Thanks for reminding me of this one. I'll be listening to it more often now.
There's some other great tracks on the 'Living in the Material World' LP. Thanks for reviewing George. Dying for someone to review/ reaction to George's 'It's All Too Much' track from the Yellow Submarine soundtrack.
Are you still looking for peace songs? What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello. The song was written by Nick Lowe for his band Brinsley Schwarz, which also deserves a listen. It's also been covered by a bunch of interesting artists. Also, there are tons of great songs by Nick Lowe and his collaborations with Dave Edmunds and their band Rockpile, which I bet you'd love. And you really should take a listen to Elvis, if you don't know him. This part of late 70's/early 80's New Wave was awesome.
Don’t feel bad Doug I basically Ignored George’s solo stuff until my mother who has since passed away in 2022 gave me “The Concert for George “ for my birthday one year and then I heard George’s stuff that I just didn’t hear and it’s FANTASTIC, just as good and unique as anything John or Paul wrote, I love the way he plays slide, it’s not “blues influenced “ slide playing… You have to check out “Beware of Darkness” and “Isn’t it a Pity”… just fantastic stuff check it out… especially “Beware of Darkness “… fantastic chord changes…
I was a young lad when this came out, like 13. So long ago. They played it a lot on the radio at the time. I do tend to prefer the Beatles songs where George writes/ sings. Norwegian Wood is also great and so many others.
A sweet song from a sweet guy (some of the time... he was HUMAN, after all). This was a HUGE hit in the early 70s, when then, as now, society seems to be unraveling before our very eyes. I see a Bad Moon Rising... I see... trouble on the way!

"Keep me free from birth" - relates to the Hindu philosophy that we reincarnate until we have learned the lessons we need to, before achieving Nirvana where rebirth is no longer necessary as we have become part of the greater consciousness.
Harrison's "Bangladesh" single is one of the very few charity singles worth listening to, as it concentrates on the victims rather than the utterly atrocious "Do They Know It's Christmas" and the even worse "We Are the World".
This is my first time hearing this one, thanks for sharing. There is something familiar about it though, it's a bit Simon and Garfunkel-y. That and My Sweet Lord, but I suppose that's not surprising lol
Are you thinking of Cecilia? I don't quite know why but it's the first song that came to mind when I read "Simon and Garfunkel". It's not as chill as this one but has the same happy vibe to it.
Brazilian artist Marisa Monte does a great live cover of this song. Very different instrumentation and performed with a Brazilian flair. Check it out! ua-cam.com/video/hbx8b-y8bHM/v-deo.html
Wow! Doug never heard this before?? You couldn't NOT hear this song back in the day! You should check out Badfinger's 'Day After Day' which George played slide on and helped produce I believe.
Rest in peace, George. My fav Beatle as well❤❤

My favorite George song. Such an amazing talent, and such an amazing message.

I once read that “Give me free from birth” is related to the wheel of reincarnation
Spot on!
That was my first thought.
@deciccohernan by reaching Samadhi (Illumination) one gets free from the eternal cycle of birth, death and rebirth

Gary Wright (keyboards), Spooky Tooth and solo artist. Klaus Voorman, bass, famous for the cover art of The Beatles' Revolver.
Klaus played in Manfred Mann & was a Beatles friend from their Germany days.
He also played bass for Manfred Mann (five albums) and produced Trio's hit "Da Da Da".
I first encountered Klaus through his work on several of Harry Nilsson's albums. He also did a good bit of work with John Lennon.

Isn't it a Pity live from a concert for Graorge is a worthy listen! great reaction, there are many songs with shakers in them on Concert or George
More Harrison please. There is plenty to go around.
beautiful song, one of my faves from george and he has a lot of great ones!
"I don't know the words"
collective scream: LOOK AT THE TITLE
Also, What Is Life, another big hit!
If I remember correctly, Klaus Voormann and Jim Keltner worked early seventies with John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson

"Give me peace on Earth"

Check out the concert for George it has lots of great versions of his songs my favourite is Billy Preston's rendition of isn't it a pity
"So Sad" a sleeper Harrison Track. And "Ring out the Old ring in the New"..."Ding Dong "for a Festive song.

nice tune
good choice
I have to laugh at "performed it live at every concert for the rest of his life..."
So he played it live, like, three times 😅
