That's a good point actually, I've never heard men's night or women's night. The idea is to just have fun, so maybe guess it's just to bring in the youthful spirit.

8 1/2 is a 9 1/2 in Britain so it's not that small
I wear an 8 1/2, and yeah, it is small.
Plus, your height has some influence on your shoe size, so Leonard will wear a smaller shoe than Sheldon.
“Small” is relative. Probably an appropriate descriptor for Sheldon. I wear 13, so 8 1/2 is certainly small in comparison.
Other way around, 8.5 American is 7.5 UK
