Great topics. Almost 40 years, I can count on 1 hand on my decoy kills. I stopped using them for years because they spook birds. Two seasons ago we doubled up on a couple of major Tom’s. We put out a home made Jake tail strutter over a laying hen. These wer old decoys that I gave a lil paint job. Cut a tail off one, cut a groove in it to attach that uneven fan. It worked like a charm… that day it did anyway. I wouldn’t bet on it again. Field birds I may revisit that set up. The new decoys are definitely lifelike but I’m with BCO on this topic 100% they are not hurting the turkey pop.
Now.. them cute little tents. It’s time to take the training wheels off 🤪 Seriously if it’s legal go for it. If it raining and you want to go. Go for it,nobody wants a wet azz.
I did hear the TSS thing at the end. Uhhhhhhhhhg…
Do I like and use it yes. It’s amazing. However… I think it can create a lot more bad decision making at distances people are shooting at. How many times did a bird skirt us out of range in our turkey hunting career before TSS? That’s not going to happen to often any more I believe. JMO. Most will try and get one off. I’m not bashing we’re all on the same team.
Thank you guys for what you do for the turkey hunting community you guys rock 🤘 Keep it going Ty for the reviews. I love when you 3 are yucking it up on yer videos. It’s all about the fun!

Decoys have a time & place just like anything else in regards to hunting
People make the decision to shoot not tss
It all comes down to the individual they hold up at 40 I ain’t shooting even with tss

I am not a big fan of decoys. Seen more long beards turn and walk away with over 50 years of Turkey hunting and several hundred birds under my belt. With a youth, it seems the tables flip with the birds running into your decoys. Either way, there is no right or wrong on decoy use.
Keep up the great content. Used a 28 gauge this year - thanks to all your pattern testing. A Beretta A400 upland, Turlock .515 three step, and salt Creak 1 5/8oz 10s & 1 1/4 of 9s for NY-Was the ticket on KY, OH and NY turkeys this year. Am waiting on a box of 8x9s from kinetic gunwerks to pattern.

I totally agree hunters have to do our part because the states aren’t managing habitat correctly and the outdoor network and their celebrity hunters are for the most part avoiding the subject and just hunting private petting zoos and pushing garbage products instead of focusing on habitat restoration and reducing bag limits also I’m all for doing away with a fall season hens should never knowingly be hunted

Exactly they have a place and they aren’t for everyone
We use them when it fits our gameplan and don’t when it doesn’t
I just can’t stand the people who bash people that use them like they can’t kill birds without em that is a joke to me 🤣
Gonna film more of these videos to encourage conversation instead of just bashing as we are all on the same team and most that bash just don’t understand hunting well enough

All depends on the situation. And you are 100% right, might work, might not. I have been successful with a Funky Chicken and hen the last couple years early. Later in season, I would go to a single hen if any decoy.

Personally I don’t like decoys extra weight to carry and it causes a lot of birds to shy away or hang up. As for reaping I think it’s an exciting, but dangerous way to get super close to birds, however, it moves away from the tradition of calling birds in, and using woodsman ship to help you close the distance.

    • @BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA
      @BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA  Місяць тому

I really just think reaping/fanning should be its own “thing” it’s not really a decoy it’s more so a tactic
When people put them together I think people confuse it all up and just think that’s how decoys work and it’s simply not true
But my only focus on this was just to emphasize Everything has its place for use but that doesn’t mean one doesn’t know how to call or hunt turkeys if they use it nor does it simplify the process at all in most instances

I’ll use a hen decoy in specific situations. 95+% of the time there’s no decoy in my vest. No clue what reapin is. PS I’m wearing the EXACT same shirt. Rocky ridge!

I don't hunt with decoys, the tom is hunting the hen when he comes in. Normally the hen suppose to go to him. so I don't use them I let him keep coming since he's on the hunt. I know nothing is going to scare him but me

Decoy have a place. I grew up hunting Harwood ridges. And never used a decoy. Didn't know they existed back then. 95% of the birds I have killed have been without a decoy. I am now in my 50s.and the last few years I have gained access to hunt land that consist of several very large fields. The largest field being 70 acres. Without decoys its almost impossible to kill the field birds, this I have learned. Use them right and they can be deadly, especially if you add fishing line to the hen neck And Make her peck, lol. I use a real Jake tail on my struter. Pisses the gobblers off. But, the struter needs movement, makes alot of difference. Alot easier on my knees not running and gunning as well. One last Point. Running and gunning can push bird's across property lines and they may not be back for a day or two.

Nothing works all the time. If something is legal, I am not going to disparage someone for engaging in that activity. There are certain things I will and won’t do, but that is about me, not anyone else. I think the more important thing is that people adhere to the bag limits and do what they can to enhance the habitat where they can. I honestly think turkey hunting is an activity that has a very high per capita rate of people who are full of crap with uninformed opinions.
