The thing that people tend to forget is that MVP is not the “best” player in the league, it’s the most _VALUABLE_ to _YOUR_ team. The leaf’s are kind of ass this year (for their standard) and without matthews who knows where the hell they’d be… I don’t think any one single player has positively affected their team as much as Matthews has. I think the leaf’s will go on a tear to end the season but we’ll see what happens
This is all the proof you need that he was playing injured last season, and he still managed to put up 40, but as a Leaf fan, this is awesome and definitely history in the making, now some people are talking about him passing gretzky (or ovi when he hits it) scoring record, he might not get it, but I feel he'll be close, what do you think (btw I love your content man, keep up the great work!)
Me too. Would rather see him score 20 in the playoffs than 70 in the regular season. Leafs are very likely going to face Florida or Boston and those teams are physical. And sadly leaf stars tend to disappear when it gets physical
I think it’s only been very recently that his one timer has been working. Previously, he always shot wide or not well placed. If he can consistently get his one timer on, it’s scary how many goals he can add to his tally
By the end of his playing career, I'm pretty confident that Matthews name will be mentioned along with Dave Keon, Borje Salming, Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour and Mats Sundin as among the greatest players to wear blue-and-white. His reputation for that alone is pretty much secure already. He wins a cup in a leaf uniform? No way he's not considered the single greatest Leaf in history.
I think that Knies, Marner, and Matthews line should stay together because they just click. Knies is the digger, Marner is the set-up man, and Matthews is the finisher. Marner is always looking for Matthews, and he makes the call if he likes the set-up. And passing,.....oh my goodness, Mitch delivers perfect passes. Those are 3 guys who know their roles and strive to execute those roles to the best of their ability. Reminds me of the Gaudereau, Tkachuk, and Lindstrom line in Calgary a couple of years ago.

I have to agree, it's been a number of years since I've watched any sort of hockey, growing up its always been my number 1 sport, but watching Matthews play on the ice and bury that puck in the net is really next-level hockey. Hope he can keep up the great momentum and continue bringing the tears of joy to his mom's face and fascinate all hockey fans with the sheer excitement and exhilaration that is NHL hockey.
After last year's down year battling the wrist injury his bounce-back to being the best goal scorer in a league that has so many snipers is incredible. The one-timer from the right side has been near unstoppable (today he misfired from that position). He seems destined to be a part of that group that includes Bossy, Hull, and Ovechkin. Perhaps Lemieux should be included, but perhaps not to the extent of Gretzky, I tend to see him as a playmaker who could score (and score a lot) rather than a pure goal scorer. It's a fun time to be a fan of the game with so much talent in the game.
if matthews gets 72 goals this season he would be tied with ovechkin for the same goals throughout 8 seasons, even though he has more goals per game the ovechkin ovechkin had played more games throughout less seasons, but if matthews can catch his pace by season wide then it's even crazier because oh how much less games he played, ovechkin played almost every game throughout thoes 8 season but matthew has so many injuries and still matching him is alien level talent
@@DropBear_42 matthews has missed 95 games if he plays the rest of the season without missing a game, while through the 8 season ovechkin missed 55 games, this is all thinking that every season should be up to 82 games and both matthews and ovechkin has couple of seasons where it was shortened but that still important in this topic
Maple Leafs has so much amazing talent in their team... It's an absolute mystery to me how they were not able to achieve something great in playoffs yet...and I am not sure if they will achieve something this year either
You can’t look at where they lost without acknowledging who won. capitals in year one, the season before their Cup run. Boston and Tampa twice each who everyone admits have been juggernaut teams, but no one wants to recognize that when putting the Leafs down. And yet all of those series went to 6-7 games. So it’s not like they bowed out meekly. The Columbus loss was embarrassing, and whatever you think of Montreal and Florida, they both ended up going to the Finals the year they beat the Leafs, so if we weren’t supposed to lose to them, it’s fair to say the same about the 4 other teams that lost to them too. 4 of the last 8 teams they teams they faced in the playoffs went to Cup Finals the year they beat them. Reminds me of the Capitals. Ovi likely has more rings if he didn’t consistently run into Crosby and the Penguins in the 2nd round every year.
Leafs always get the hardest teams right off the bat because of the way the playoffs are seeded. I think their current team is really starting to come together finally, but obviously a lot will have to go right.
@@sir_john_hammond they need to go back to 1-8, but they won’t because every change they’ve made created the illusion of parity. It really seems like the NHL is hitting another level of offensive production from elite players. Matthews 60 goals in 2021-22, McDavid 60+ goals and 150+ points in 2022-23, Pastrnak 60+ goals in 2022-23, Matthews on pace for 70+ goals, Hughes and Makar on pace for 96 points, etc. Also the players who are stars but not among the best such as Nugent-Hopkins (104 points in 2022-23), Hyman (83 points in 2022-23, on pace for 52 goals in 2023-24) and Reinhart (98 point pace), and many other players having great offensive seasons. Right now is undoubtedly the best hockey I've seen from the NHL since I started watching.
When you look at the list of players with the most hat-tricks in a season, it's crazy to see him on there with pretty much all legends and there are no other players on that list since the mid 90's, almost 30 years ago.
Watching the All Star Special and in interviews with his teammates one can see Matthews is a really nice guy and team first kind of guy. And watching him play I think part of his success is that he is a strong skater and almost impossible to knock off his feet.
Love what he’s and doing and I’m not even a laughs fan really hope he can keep up this production in his 30s like ovi. I genuinely hope he can because ovi only maintained his goal scoring for so long due to “ovi’s office”

Ovechkin had a lot more advantages and took WAY more shots too… Matthews is better and in today’s game while being in Toronto 70+ is a phenomenal feat and I hope he gets it
I love ALMOST everything about Matts. I just wish he used his size a little more. The guy is a monster and could truck-stick dudes if he wanted to. A little more snarl to his game would make him very close to the perfect player.
As a lifelong Leafs fan and a bit of a historian on them, I’m not sure the fans are comprehending that not only is Matthews the best scorer in Leafs history, but he’s the best by an embarrassing amount. He’ll most likely catch Mats Sundin’s for the Leafs scoring record by next year, in 2/3 of the games. For a team as old as the leafs, they’ve never had an incredibly prolific scorer to much of any degree in the century they’ve been around, and Matthews is one hell of an explosive scorer to expose that.
His shooting percentage is at his highest so far at a sick 21.3% but that's after the 2nd hatty. Hopefully he can keep it over 19-20% by the end of the season and in the play offs. Last season he had his second highest amount of shots in a year but his s% was at his lowest most likely because he wasn't healthy and wrist not a 100%.
old timer here. on average and in my opinion, players today are bigger, faster, and more talented than back in my day. even more dramatic is the improvement in the skill of goalies. today they can skate well. add their size, coaching, and equipment, and it is tough to score. i bet some of these skaters today could score at will in the way back. but, there is a big deficiency today in hockey basics, positional play is terrible and no one knows how to either throw a check or tie a guy up effectively. half of today's goals are scored by guys standing untouched in front of the net. i was a small center and i was really afraid of getting knocked on my can just as the shot was coming in from the point. i was always going to get thumped in front of the net. geesh, we even checked more in front of the net in summer hockey. today's players are soooo talented, but the game is almost no check pond hockey. beer leagues are more ferocious than an NHL game. i have noticed over the past few years that the teams that play solid positional hockey and check well seem to be in the later rounds of the playoffs.
Best player in the world. He also had 2 assists last night for the goofs that say he doesn't pass. Sure assists are important but what's the absolute best way to Help your team win hockey games? Score fucking goals......Smd haters, you all wish he was on your team.
I'm a die hard Leafs fan and I love Matthews... but all the goals and all the hat tricks in the world mean nothing if we can't get a Stanley Cup. We need a closer.
How likely do you think it is that he threatens Gretzky's goal record? He's gotta be in the top 5 for sure by the end of his career (barring injury issues and lockouts)
If he stays healthy and stays at this pace he easily beats it. Hard part is staying healthy and competitive into his late career. That's what's made Ovi ao amazing
assuming he scores 70 this season he would need to average about 53 goals per season over the next 10 seasons (which would put him at 37 years old). I think it is highly unlikely.
The GLOAT a lot of Leaf fans don't realise what we are witnessing. I said it at the beginning of the season we might be seeing a pissed-off healthy 34.
Incredible performance, and it's been great to see. He probably would have hit 50 last night if Keefe kept putting him out there, he's that kind of hot right now and the Ducks looked awful. The thing that people tend to forget is that MVP is not the “best” player in the league, it’s the most _VALUABLE_ to _YOUR_ team.
The leaf’s are kind of ass this year (for their standard) and without matthews who knows where the hell they’d be…
I don’t think any one single player has positively affected their team as much as Matthews has. I think the leaf’s will go on a tear to end the season but we’ll see what happens
AM34 IS ON 🔥🔥🔥 and let it be known he tied Mario for 6 hattys in a season
He will be the best goal scorer of his generation
maybe even all time, his goals per game so far in his career is a full .11 higher than gretzky and ovie
Bro your commenting is one of the best to listen to! Keep it up!
Hopefully he can actually do this in the playoffs
He’s a different player this year, you never know man
Me too. Would rather see him score 20 in the playoffs than 70 in the regular season. Leafs are very likely going to face Florida or Boston and those teams are physical. And sadly leaf stars tend to disappear when it gets physical
Round 1 he was fat and away our best most clutch forward but yeah he dropped off in round 2
@@WalkableBulb90520 would be an all time nhl record
@@wnsbug exactly. Lol. 20 is unlikely in the playoffs, but if he only scores 2 or 3 with the year he's having. That would be unacceptable. Lol
Two years ago he said he was working on his one tees , boom after inserting it to his play he became a 40 goal guy to a 60 goal guy , crazy
Give him the rocket richard trophy now!
Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact Johnny is so consistent with his posting.
I can’t remember the last time I’ve gone several day’s without good content being released from Johnny here, s/o to you man, keep it up, the content is appreciated!
I like how he isn’t a hot dog… game tying goal, or first goal? A goal that gives a lead or OT? Sick celly. Oh we’re up 3? Lemme jus glide back to the bench respectfully. He’s a beast
And the half lockout season!
@@danielbaldwin2390 Quite a surprise seeing someone in the comment section who knows what they're talking about.
The number of top seeded teams that get knocked out early since the change is atrocious. But it lets more lower seed teams go forward and Bettman can say “look how competitive the league is.”
@@danielbaldwin2390typical leafs fans always finding excuses lol. Matthew’s will leave in 2 years and y’all will be in the basement especially with that dogshit gm treliving
bro 10 hattys in a season, TWO SEASONS IN A ROW WTF
Special player
Matthews setting up in the left-handed Ovie office has been an awesome addition to his game.
That wrist fully healed now
Not a Leafs fan but Matthews is without the best pure goal scorer in the league right now
A Mexican heritage kid from Arizona doing this is bananas. Born in Cali I know but doesn't matter. This guy is bonkers
Ovi will be the first to 900 . AM34 if he stays healthy will be the first to 1000 . Heard it here first and crazy thing is it's not that bold of a prediction .
Ovechkin had a lot more advantages and took WAY more shots too… Matthews is better and in today’s game while being in Toronto 70+ is a phenomenal feat and I hope he gets it
48 goals in 52 games and he’s on pace for 74 goals after 53 team games
Been a leafs fan My whole life
It’s nice to have a legitimate superstar
I love ALMOST everything about Matts.
I just wish he used his size a little more.
The guy is a monster and could truck-stick dudes if he wanted to.
A little more snarl to his game would make him very close to the perfect player.
Well said! Great video
According to most non leaf fans Matthews would be nothing without Mitch marner 🤣🤣🤣
not to mention he leads the league in posts hit with like 15+
I don't care if the Leafs win or lose, its just so much fun watching Mathews!!
Matthews is the SUPERSTAR WE HAVE NEVER HAD HERE IN TORONTO...
LEGEND!!!!
For a team as old as the leafs, they’ve never had an incredibly prolific scorer to much of any degree in the century they’ve been around, and Matthews is one hell of an explosive scorer to expose that.
..one Gordon Howe hat trick or scoring in the playoffs would be nice..
It's been such a blast to watch.
Lightning fan but can't disagree with any of this... 🤷🏻♂He has been lights out this season...
old timer here. on average and in my opinion, players today are bigger, faster, and more talented than back in my day. even more dramatic is the improvement in the skill of goalies. today they can skate well. add their size, coaching, and equipment, and it is tough to score. i bet some of these skaters today could score at will in the way back. but, there is a big deficiency today in hockey basics, positional play is terrible and no one knows how to either throw a check or tie a guy up effectively. half of today's goals are scored by guys standing untouched in front of the net. i was a small center and i was really afraid of getting knocked on my can just as the shot was coming in from the point. i was always going to get thumped in front of the net. geesh, we even checked more in front of the net in summer hockey. today's players are soooo talented, but the game is almost no check pond hockey. beer leagues are more ferocious than an NHL game. i have noticed over the past few years that the teams that play solid positional hockey and check well seem to be in the later rounds of the playoffs.
He saw Pasta and McDavid break 60 last year and thought “yeah I can top that”
He's already hit 60 before
Best player in the world.
Maybe we’ll get past the second round for once
Matthews is in elite company, like Mario & Wayne
What's the record for goals to assists ratio? He's gotta be high up on that one..
1
He's on pace to be the next Mike Modano... Perhaps even the American GOAT.
Please keep making leaf content
I mean since day 1 his goal tallies have been very comparable to Alex Ovechkin’s early career years
How likely do you think it is that he threatens Gretzky's goal record? He's gotta be in the top 5 for sure by the end of his career (barring injury issues and lockouts)
Unless he has the longevity of Ovi it’s not happening
I think Ovi beats it first.
I think it is highly unlikely.
too bad he can’t score all the way to The Stanley’s Cup in playoffs
Imagine what this kids legacy could be if he would show up during the playoffs
Great video. I’m trying to make videos like this
dude is 26 and he has the 4th most goals on this original six hockey club
Best American goal scorer ever
PAPI IS GETTING 70+ THIS YEAR!
Now all he needs to do is replicate this scoring in the playoffs
Won’t happen. First round exit.
100 goals this year including post season
Auston 3:16 says, I JUST GOT ANOTHER HAT TRICK 💙🤍
I'm a Wings but I have to say that Matthews is so successful because of that badass mustache.😂
The GLOAT a lot of Leaf fans don't realise what we are witnessing. I said it at the beginning of the season we might be seeing a pissed-off healthy 34.
He is among the best, but might very well get passed everyone
Makes scoring look so easy
Incredible performance, and it's been great to see. He probably would have hit 50 last night if Keefe kept putting him out there, he's that kind of hot right now and the Ducks looked awful. Don't think Matthews saw the ice much if at all in the 3rd; think he was under 15 minutes of ice for the night?
He's the BOMB! 🏒💛
but how many shots and how many shot attempts
Fuck does that matter for? Hes got 6 goals in 2 games.
🤷♂️but his shooting percentage is somewhere around 21.3% and with his known goal count(48), it should be easy to do the math to find out... or just Google it 😂
Glad the leafs have matthews, i believe he will win a cup with the leafs, just need better defense and goalie
Let's just hope he saves some for the playoffs this year.
For once,
25 goals in post season, just watch
He's pretty good
0:49
TOE DRAG RELEASE
Marner do not forget about the passin assassin' marner
one word....GOAT
and they're still a borderline playoff team.
For Leafs haters I get hating AM34 by extension but I urge you not to fall into that trap. Back in the day my friends and I “hated” Gretzky and the Oilers and we wasted lots of energy on hating and trashing, calling him a ‘goal suck’, overrated, blah blah. It’s ridiculous to think about now of course - we should have just appreciated every moment watching a living legend in his prime.
As an Oilers fan, I sometimes wonder what it'd look like to have McDavid feeding pucks to Matthews. Be a devastating combo I think
@@SirMaski oh I know. We had a great taste of that with the Team North America in 2016. But yeah for the same reason I just sit back and appreciate every amazing McDavid play. Even that time he single-handedly undressed the entire Maple Leafs defence corps 🐐
100 regular season goals next season
He will be close to the top at the end... depends if he slows down at 35-37, or if he can put a few 60+ seasons together to make up for an eventual downfall. He will break 900... Guys gonna be in top 100 before end of next year and hes what.... 26 or 27?
People don't talk about the work Matthews puts in back in his own end as well. He's bought into becoming a complete player instead of just banging his stick for the one timer all the time.
he is just restructuring his out look of the ice, having to adjust to the new age of players, maybe one season to study the new styles of game play, and then when the time is right, no holds bard on the scoring. if he doesnt pass gretzky it will be by choice to respect the title, yet im sure he will settle in nice and close, giving the wink saying it can be done, yet do we want to shift the names or should we just leave them as they are for the sake of it?
Hahah starts off with…Look… I know I’ve been talking to much about the Leafs but
Best player in the world for years too come
Connor mcdavid😂
As a Leafs fan, all we need now is defense
Need goals in the playoffs
