I was born and raised in northern New Jersey and lived on the east coast until moving to North Beach over 20 years ago. I guess I've never lost my Jersey/Rhode Island accents.
Dang, you are GOOD! Grew up in an Italian restaurant family with a father who cooked for the Rat Pack. You hit everything right on and your knowledge of the many regional Italian variations is more than impressive. And your sass tops it all off. So approachable. Intelligent. Fresh. Easy to understand. Perfecto.
This guy is a character and a half. A great throwback to more thoughtful people. He does a real good job showing you how it's done and what it means to Italians. That plate looks amazing.
beautiful! that is a long lost art. even in italy, no one cooks like this anymore. this makes me remember my youth when all the italians in my city hung out together and did stuff like this. there was not much to like there was today , so my parents and their friends cooked and made meals like this. it was always festive and there was always food to eat. we seem to have lost so much so I try making nice sugos like this and give it friends and family and make them remember the good days that our parents taught us.
Hey Gianni, We live in Sausalito...When the wind is blowing in the right direction, I swear I can smell the gravy cooking in your flat. You are legend :,,,🙏👌😎
Absolutely fantastic! You remind me of my father, God rest his soul. Cooking was his gift. Watching you in this video was like watching him, all those years ago in the kitchen. He learned all his recipes from his Grandmother, and I used to watch him cook. It was an art form you seldom see these days. Thank you!!! At last, I've found it again! Ciao!
I live in Idaho and we don’t have anything like this. So grateful for UA-cam...I’ve made homemade sauce with my own homegrown basil and Roma tomatoes, making delicious dishes like yours, I’ve made enchilada sauce, chile verde...seriously, the world is at my fingertips! These Italian dishes really make my family happy! I’ve subscribed and hit the 🔔 🥰🍝
Im Asian and have always loved the flavours and spices you get off from Italian cuisine, it's an overwhelming wholesome, home like feeling. I wish I knew more about Italian food so I can create authentic Italian flavours myself.
OMG, Gianni, this was the best Italian gravy I've ever made. I am of German decent but I love Italian cuisine. It is very apparent that you are a retired professional chef and you explain everything so well in your videos. Danke!!!
I've just found you !! So excited. My mom was born & raised in Chicago. Her best friend was & is Italian and they would come to visit us in Kentucky . They would bring Italian sausages in an ice chest bc it was 60 yrs ago. Kids galore so the gravy pot was huge !! So...mom is 91 now & I needed some more tips so I can make the gravy. I learned a lot today , so THANK YOU !!
Gianni thank you for sharing. You brought back memories of my ma. As I watched you work right away I realized Gianni can really cook. We are 5 brothers (just 4 of us left). We visit whenever we can between the bay area and Chicago. I'm the one who cooks. Ma used to say, one of you has to learn... So I was paying close attention and cheese'n it from ear to ear because of all the fond memories all the way through the recording and when you got emotional at the end... I may have started a half second before you... Again Thank You, Jesse
Bravo Gianni!!! The best video of an Italian American classic. The aromas coming through the screen!!! Forget about it. Your killing me!!! Trading all your tomorrows for a single yesterday. The memories, oh the memories carried by those aromas. Thanks for the memories paisano. Just don't watch this when you're on a diet like me. My doctor needs to see this. The Jedi mind trick, "you don't need to be on a diet, let's go get some Italian food."
i'm an electrician . how that figures in to your wonderful braciole recipe is as follows. i was helping out my italian friend and barber of 40 years at his new house , finishing his basement. in true italian fashion , his wife had gravy going all day (though she had a full kitchen upstairs , she made the gravy in the basement.) they were such gracious hosts and provided a virtual feast when i was done for the day. among other things , she made braciole.it was amazing. i do a fair amount of cooking myself and have made it many times since . it helps to see other peoples take on this standard recipe i love your passion and enthusiasm . a favored recipe can really bring us back . thank you for the wonderful recipe.
If you don't get heartburn after eating this dish there's something missing from the recipe. Simply Delicious boy do I miss the Italian restaurants in New Jersey the finest in the country.
Gianni...I love it. I have not one ounce of Italian in me, but I grew up in the real deal, where my best friends dad was scrapped in the front yard and half the guys are doing time. This is exactly how it's done, old school style...how I remember Sunday gravy. Thank you. I am making this tonight. Home made garlic bread, salad, badda bing, you got dinnah! Salut!
Hey Gianni, My Father's family was from North Beach. They lived on Greenwich St just one block below Coit Tower! My Uncle's played ball at North Beach Playground and Funston Park with the DiMaggio brothers!! Watching you make that gravy brought back so many memories of my Grandmother making this gravy EVERY SUNDAY for her family gathering dinner. She would go to the early morning Mass, come home and prepare the dinner. AND THE FOOD!! EVERYTHING HOME MADE FROM SCRATCH! We had two kinds of pasta, meatballs, sausage, beef and pork rollitini (sp), and on special occasions (Christmas and Easter) beef raviolis or stuffed manicotti! The raviolis she would roll out the pasta on a bed sheet on her dining room table! Put the filling over the pasta, then roll out the top layer of pasta over the filling. Using just a pizza cutting wheel she would cut the pasta into 2 inch squares!! THE GREATEST TASTING RAVIOLIS IN THE WORLD!!! She'd be at her little stove and put her kitchen chairs at the stove so her little grandchildren could stand on them and watch her cook. She spoke about half English and half Italian and try to explain to us what she was doing, but at times she would mixed the words up if she couldn't remember the words in English. My mom, aunts and uncles, close neighbors, everybody brought the supplemental food: veggies, bread, wine, and dessert. The women would be in the kitchen helping "Nona" prepare the meal and gossiping about family and friends. The men would be in the living room having drinks and (supposedly) watching the kids. Then we'd all sitdown at 4pm for Sunday Dinner and "Manga" for a couple of hours. Everyone eating, laughing at the adults stories, and filling our stomachs with the most wonderful food IN THE WORLD!!
Ciao. I'm pleased my recipes work for you. Italian dishes are uncomplicated. Use the best ingredients and simple, quick preparations and you'll eat a fantastic dish. Most of my recipes have 6 or fewer ingredients. Their flavors shine through.
My mother's father came from Naples and when he arrived in the North End of Boston, the woman he married didn't know how to cook like he was used to, coming from Jewish background. My grandfather had 7 sisters and he had a few of them train my nana how to cook Italian style. It all got passed on to my mother and now...me. I use MUCH of the same techniques as you do in this video. Right from-a-the old country! Salute! Thank you for posting. It sure brings back a lot of memories...and my mother called "Gravy" too...always on a Sunday!
Well done Chef. I remember growing up in our semi-poor neighborhood and the Italian families would feed all us kids Sunday gravy. They kept the meat for family so we got pasta, gravy, bread and a glass of Kool-Aid. It was wonderful!
I'm originally not far from San Francisco and used to take the bus (too young to drive yet) and then walk to Fisherman's Wharf for sourdough bread, fight off the sea gulls and enjoy the view of the bridge. When I was old enough to drive, I had a job at a small restaurant on the Embarcadero called "The Captain's Table", later married and moved to TN. I was told to always keep my memories, because it has changed so much. I've looked at the pictures you've shown with your video several times and got a bit home sick. Thank you for your video.
I live in WA State, and we have very few Italian places here. However, I lived in Denver for awhile, and my eyes were completely opened to Italian food. The sausage is what I remember. Buon Apetito!
Gianni you made the Sunday gravy JUST like my grandmother and my mother. I makes it the same. Yes they were the days. I thank you for this. Unless one lived this the flavor smell the joy. You miss out. Love you. Joanne
Glad I found your channel. When my great grandfather came to this country, he settled in North Beach. He raised my grandfather and great uncle around the corner from Saint Peter and Paul on Stockton St. This neighborhood was the start of it all for our family. Thank for sharing your videos Gianni.
Ciao. Where are your family roots in Italy? Do you still live in North Beach? Great spot for raising a family, right near the Church and Liguria Bakery.
Gianni North Beach Great grandfather was born in Augusta, Sicily. Great grandmother was from Palermo. I'm not fortunate enough to be able to afford to live there sadly. My wife, son and I live in the east bay but we visit the neighborhood often. Were just their yesterday as a matter of fact.
Ahhhhh! Sunday Gravy! Just like momma used to make, only she removed the all the meats except the sausages and sent them in my Papa's lunchbox on monday, it must have really brightened his Monday having them for lunch!
thank you for calling it Sunday gravy!!!😁 you even used pinole and raisins!!only my mom said family did that... finally see someone make it like I was taught. as a young girl ..you even pronounce like what I grew up hearing..lol. thank you. you made my day!!
Gianni, just wanted to say thanks. Came back to your channel after a few years and forgot just how much you taught me about cooking great italian food. Your inspiration is used every night on my dinner table! Thanks for the hard work of keeping at the videos.
Gianni, if you still read you're comments, please make more videos! I know you're busy, but you're one of the best cooking personalities in all of TV. I love your recipes. This Sunday gravy has taught me so much. Smashed potatoes, never peeled em like that, never loaded em up with olive oil or roasted garlic before. Your method for eggplant, using a seasoned egg wash, forgoing the bread crumbs since they get all soggy is brilliant. Your recipes are for the mind, body and soul. Please make more videos
You make want to cook Gianni. I love it, made with such love. After I move in my new place I’m making this. Thank you for such love and inspiration! God Bless!
Thanks Gianni! It brings a tear to my eye remembering my fathers stories of his life growing up in Newark. He made a great Spaghetti sause. He had a routine, and it was the same all the time. He always made a lot because there were seven kids.
Thank you, Gianni, for sharing your family recipes and memories. I admire your respect & love you have for your mother. I'm in NJ. Just hope someday soon I'll feel well enough to make your gravy & meatballs. The sandwiches next day sound delicious! 😊please do more videos soon. Joanie from NJ
Great video and Gianni you’re the real deal. That’s what cooking is all about. Fresh ingredients, knowing how to cook them and with pure love from all your memories growing up in the kitchen- you nailed it. Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed this one.
Whoever's doing the video and production stuff deserves some props. Unsung heroes behind the cameras. Love your channel as someone who spent lots of time in North Beach in the 60's when some Little Italy was still around.
Awesome Gianni, I know thenflavor, parents from Naples and I grew with up in Paterson and my wife grew up in Newark border of Bloomfield. Many memories
Nicely done sir. Particularly like the ease, pace and attitude of your competence. Very joyful and on a side note, a very powerful connection to your old country.
I frickin’ LOVE you!!! Boy, do I miss my mother-in-law’s cooking! Thank you so much for the inspiration I needed to make a nice Sunday Gravy for my husband! ❤️👍🏻🙏🏻❤️👍🏻💕
Man this guy did not skip a single step or detail! Also the video was accurate and concise. No BS, no fluff. A guy taking no shortcuts using the best always results in a primo meal. Awesome video! I have to make sauce like that
My man you should have a show on the Food Network...and I'm not kidding. Watching you cook and listening to you narrate calms me and inspires me to cook.
I just made this for my non italian family. I followed this recipe to the letter and the spoken word. They said it was the best Sunday dinner they have ever had. I also rubbed some baguettes with fresh garlic cloves and threw them on the grill with some olive oil and finished it with some parm reg. From start to finish it took me 6 hours. No wonder its called SUNDAY gravy because it's the only day I can make it. I think we're doing this for thanksgiving this year.
I haven't made the gravy yet. My mom had a heart attack, went to rehab & now we're going to bring her home next week. So LOTS been going on ! So between my brother , 3 daughters and my oldest grandson , and God's help, we'll do it.... 24/7. (My sister lives in Dallas) So...pray for us plz. Love listening to your videos. Reminds me of yesteryear. And I love fennel !! GOD BLESS
Gianni, Truly enjoyed watching you cook. I make mine the same as yourself. I chop all the veggies so that I don't remove except for the bay leaf. After 3 hrs of cooking you can't find anything but the bay leaf! I'm fond of garlic so I use a bit more than you do.Love seeing you cook. Both my parents were born in Italy and cooking was a very important part of daily life. Thanks and God Bless you.
Ciao Josie. Thanks for sharing your technique. Sometimes I chop vegetables or turn them into a paste in a food processor then saute them in olive oil before adding the tomatoes. Any of these methods impart the flavor of the vegetables into the sauce or even a soup base. Yes, remember to remove the bay leaf! Keep on cooking. --Gianni
being a complete novice in the kitchen (my brother and dad are both excellent chefs) I can say, your teaching method is second to none. I used your recipe for chicken cutlet tonight and everyone loved it. Your channel is awesome. Thank you
Gianni, this video brought tears to my eyes, for a couple of reasons. When I was growing up my Mom worked for a Family owned Italian Restaurant, I would go there after school to eat & see her. I remember having Braciole there once, I have been looking for the Recipe, I think yours is very similar to what I remember, I couldn't ask my Mom how to make things, she wasn't much of a cook. I cooked for her when I grew up, she's been gone since 2007 & I'm getting the desire to cook again, finally!
My mother was from Austria, near the border with Hungary. Boy, could she cook! Great vid. It's high summer, but I'm going to get busy on some Szegedina Goulash. I miss my mom, too.
Nicely done, Gianni. I'm a pretty accomplished Italian cook. Puglia region recipes, from the family, and then beyond. I love to see how other folks prepare Italian dishes. Started cooking at 8 yrs old in the family restaurant. It was nice listening to you talk and say the same things that were said to me when I was learning. Like Salty as the bay of Naples (my family said Sea) but, still basically the same. Ciao!
Love it all! Especially the Sunday Gravy with braciole! Brings back memories of my Grandma and Aunt’s house in the Bronx when I was a kid. Welcome back, Gianni! Please do more cooking episodes as well as some more live streaming. I’ll be watching for you. BTW, you can’t tell from my UA-cam handle, but I’m Italiano!
Have this simmering on the stove right now. The best feelings of contentment come from knowing the comfort that awaits! Thanks for the great videos and keeping the Italian tradition alive in our beautiful city!
Love ya Gianni. I just watched this Video for the 15th Time . LOVE IT ! Love your Passion and style of cooking Italian. You're Awesome !!! HAPPY NEW YEAR and All The Best. Daniel
Thank you Gianni, Just made this recipe yesterday, it was Fantastic. I brought a plate to a friend who is Italian and is a great traditional Italian cook, he was speachless until he was done
Gianni, where are you? I look for you from time to time. I miss your videos!
This is one of the best videos on UA-cam.

Please, please, grate your own parmigiano or pecorino. You'll really see the difference the real stuff makes in your dish.
beautiful! that is a long lost art. even in italy, no one cooks like this anymore. this makes me remember my youth when all the italians in my city hung out together and did stuff like this. there was not much to like there was today , so my parents and their friends cooked and made meals like this. it was always festive and there was always food to eat. we seem to have lost so much so I try making nice sugos like this and give it friends and family and make them remember the good days that our parents taught us.

That looks fabulous. The history of your family went into those pots, I think Mama would be proud of her Gianni. Grazie
OMG, Gianni, this was the best Italian gravy I've ever made. I am of German decent but I love Italian cuisine. It is very apparent that you are a retired professional chef and you explain everything so well in your videos. Danke!!!
Ciao Dale. No I'm just a passionate home cook. Keep on cooking. Buon appetito!
Do you have a cook book. I love your recipes and of course but would love a book. Thanks fr Pennsylvania

My doctor needs to see this. i'm an electrician .
how that figures in to your wonderful braciole recipe is as follows.
i was helping out my italian friend and barber of 40 years at his new house , finishing his basement.
in true italian fashion , his wife had gravy going all day (though she had a full kitchen upstairs , she made the gravy in the basement.)
they were such gracious hosts and provided a virtual feast when i was done for the day.
among other things , she made braciole.it was amazing.
i do a fair amount of cooking myself and have made it many times since .
it helps to see other peoples take on this standard recipe
i love your passion and enthusiasm . a favored recipe can really bring us back .
thank you for the wonderful recipe.

Nice recipe! With that accent, I feel like i'm in Bloomfield over here! Statt' buon!
Hey Gianni,
My Father's family was from North Beach.

Hands down the best Sunday gravy I've ever made thanks john
Please come back to make more fantastic dishes like this!
Wonderful!! Thank you so much for your recipe. BTW I lived on Filbert St. across from the elementary school. Love North Beach.
Passion + history+love , = perfection You have it all.
Omg, ur from my grandfather's old neighborhood! My family is very tired to North Beach. I really love to see another chef's take on old recipes!
GOD BLESS
Ciao Rosetta. My best wishes to your Mom. I hope your family finds your way through difficult times. There is always light in the darkness.

I like your style, Gianni. And your cooking.
Many thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom
Started watching the Sunday Gravy UA-cam videos. Had to make some. This is old school !

Awesome video! Brings back memories in New York! Not Italian can appreciate the culture. Have grew up around many Italian families.
Great job you did a great job I'm hungry can you make me a.. plate..☺️☺️
being a complete novice in the kitchen (my brother and dad are both excellent chefs) I can say, your teaching method is second to none. I used your recipe for chicken cutlet tonight and everyone loved it. Your channel is awesome. Thank you
Those chicken cutlets are one of my absolute favorites. I'm pleased the recipe worked for you. Keep on cooking.
Buon appetito!

Omg every step looks soo good im try this awsome dish..thank you god bless..
Ciao!
😉 I could listen to you East Coast folks all day! Salute

Ciao Joel. I hope the gravy turned out well. Keep on cooking!
Buon appetito!
